Abstract:
“Still Blundering into Sense”. Maria Edgeworth, her context, her legacy. This collection of international contributions, as well as celebrating Maria Edgeworth’s 250th anniversary, proposes some further investigation on two fundamental aspects of her thought and legacy, still little examined in depth: her interest in the education of the young (and of the adults supposed to educate them) in an empirical perspective, explicitly scientific, open to different religious confessions and addressed to all social classes; and the urge for a wider and shared tolerance for alterity. The various essays in the collection offer some insight on the multi-layered relationships between the universe of education and its relationship with the development of knowledge, literature – particularly children’s literature – and pedagogy, as well as between women’s emancipation and the development of both individual and social identity. Their common ground is a dialogic perspective aiming to connect areas of scholarship, which the academia generally classifies into separate research fields.

Shaver, Phillip R., Mario Mikulincer, Baljinder Sahdra, and Jacquelyn Gross. Attachment Security as a Foundation for Kindness Toward Self and Others. Edited by Kirk Warren Brown and Mark R. Leary. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199328079.013.15.

Full text
Abstract:
Based on attachment theory and decades of research on attachment processes and relationships, this chapter shows that attachment security, experienced in relationships with sensitive and responsive parents and partners across the life span, fosters positive attitudes toward both self and others, and also provides a foundation for desirable psychological states discussed in the Buddhist literature: mindfulness, self-compassion, and nonattachment. We review research involving children, adolescents, and adults showing that the major forms of attachment insecurity—anxiety and avoidance—interfere with healthy self-approval and self-acceptance, and also with kindness and generosity toward others. Self-acceptance and self-compassion are not “egoistic” in the negative sense; far from being psychologically and social destructive, they are foundations of openness and kindness toward others. The usual origin of attachment-related security is supportive relationships in childhood, but security can also be increased by later relationships and by laboratory and clinical interventions.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 5 provides another analysis of common sense energy security practices that cause insecurity, this time in China. The chapter provides some historical context on energy in China and policy-making procedures, and then looks directly at how energy security (nengyuan anquan) has been practised in Chinese energy security policy since 2004. It examines how energy security was constructed in official discourse in the same time period, drawing out key themes. It notes the ways in which these practices interact to create an accepted ‘common sense’ notion of energy security, where self-sufficiency is key to national security and how this leads to a focus on increasing domestic production of coal, oil, and gas. The chapter concludes by showing how these practices produce an energy security paradox.

Peters, Sally, Keryn Davis, and Ruta McKenzie. Children’s ‘working theories’ as curriculum outcomes. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198747109.003.0016.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explores how children make sense of their world through the development and refinement of ‘working theories’. Working theories are a key item for young learners, and are emphasized in the New Zealand early childhood curriculum Te Whāriki. Children’s working theories develop in environments where they have opportunities to engage in complex thinking with others, observe, listen, participate, and discuss, within the context of topics and activities. It is through interactions and activities that children begin to own the ideas and beliefs of their culture and begin to make sense of their worlds. However, fostering this learning in early childhood settings is not always easy, and requires skilled adults who can respond appropriately. We explore and discuss the nature of children’s working theories and ways in which adult–child interactions can enhance or inhibit a sense of wonder and curiosity.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 examines ‘common sense’ energy security practices in the US. It discusses the role and history of energy and energy policy-making, before looking directly at how energy security has been practised in US policy since 2004. It then analyses how energy security was constructed in official discourse in the same time period, drawing out four key themes and the centrality of continued and increased domestic fossil fuel production to these themes. Together, it suggests, these practices create a ‘common sense’ understanding of energy security which has become accepted and difficult to challenge. The chapter concludes by showing some of the implications of this ‘common sense’, demonstrating that it produces an energy security paradox.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter perceives the aesthetic sensibilities and creativity of young children through the lens of aesthetic theory and childhood studies. Understanding the aesthetic as encompassing sensitivity, emotion, imagination, and thought, I discuss how children make sense of their world, become familiar with social norms and expressive media, and create their self (including self–other relationships) through imaginative play. Aesthetic agency combines receptive and productive activity, or awareness in action—particularly evident in childhood, but not its privilege. Remembering that many pleasures of childhood relate to make-believe, I include ‘deceit’ and ‘lying’—how playful practices enlarge, change, test, and form alternatives to children’s self-conceptions and life-worlds. A moral and political perspective on make-believe (including a defence of lying) acknowledges that children’s social position is ultimately one of subordinates. Examples from research, novels about or for children (especially the work of Astrid Lindgren), and first-hand experiences emphasize the need for contextual and situated understanding.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explores the potential for adopting a children’s rights-based approach when dealing with issues relating to children impacted by parental incarceration in Ireland. It argues that the adoption of such an approach allows for the development of policies and services that are rooted in respect for justice and dignity. The extent to which children’s rights are understood by staff within the Irish Prison Service (IPS) is also explored, as well as the possibility of a more instrumental approach to family visits. The purpose is therefore to highlight the need for criminal justice agencies and policy makers to directly acknowledge the rights of children with a parent in prison and, in turn, for them to develop policies that uphold those fundamental rights independent of the rights and interests of their parents. In this way, the chapter explores the role of rights in relation to prisoners’ families.
