Abstract:
The aim of this study is to determine the design needs and methods of children's furniture for growth from the perspective of children's physiology. Due to the current advocacy of sustainable design concepts, new structures and accessories can also meet the requirements of children's furniture design. At this stage, research on the design of growthable children's furniture is very important and timely. The study used the analysis of literature sources on the design of furniture, Comparative research method. Case analysis method, structural-functional analysis, synthesis of research results, etc. are used. Analyzing the design elements of growable furniture from the perspective of children's physiology, the types of furniture that can grow children are divided into three categories: children's desks and chairs, children's beds, and children's storage furniture. According to the requirements of children's human-machine ratio, it is determined that the height of children's desks and chairs can be adjusted, and the angle between the desktop and the back of the children's chair can also be adjusted. From an ergonomic point of view, these requirements are determined based on the child's height, weight and developmental characteristics. It is determined that through the standardized design, the children's bed can be disassembled or installed, the height of the bed can be changed, and the combination of the bed and other functions can also be satisfied. Determine the category of children's storage type furniture storage items, classify according to different items, and put forward requirements for the storage of different types of items. We explore the impact of children's physiological changes on children's furniture, meet the requirements of children of different ages for the use of furniture, at the same time, provide specific design ideas. The practical significance of the obtained results lies in the possibility of their application for designers and manufacturers in the design of children furniture.

Abstract:
Furniture industry is a large and complex global industry whose value growth is influence by multiple stakeholders (Epede & Wang, 2022). Rapid urbanisation, population growth, real estate and hotel industry expansion, and rising consumer spending power have all contributed to the furniture industry's expansion. (Market Watch, 2019; Polish Investment & Trade Office in Shanghai, 2017). From 2018 to 2025, the global furniture market, which was valued at USD 480.7 billion in 2017 and is anticipated to rise at a CAGR of 5.1 percent, will expand. (Grand View Research, 2018). To provide storage space and an aesthetically pleasing appearance in homes and offices, furniture is a crucial component of both the residential and commercial sectors. The expectations and desires of consumers have changed as a result of the furniture industry's rapid development. Children's furniture serves as a toy as much as a product. (Zeng Yuan & Shi Yi, 2021). Numerous manufacturers are interested in the market due to the continued growth of sales of children's furniture in particular. However, the segmentation of the Chinese furniture market is insufficient, and the market for children's furniture has not yet been established. (M. H. Bornstein, D. L. Putnick, and G. Esposito, 2020). Children need a better atmosphere to grow up in, with a focus on their furniture, both physically and mentally. Modern children's physical and psychological development traits are not taken into account by children's furniture, which can only be used temporarily. (Wenbo Zhang & Si Li, 2022). The question of this paper is what are important of the children's psychological needs in children's furniture design toward product satisfactory. Hence, the objective of study is to analyse the significant of psychological needs in design and development of children's furniture toward product satisfactory. Abstract:
Nowadays, the digitisation of products occupies a very significant space in the product market, as incorporating new functionalities means satisfying new needs for users. Likewise, there is a debate between the programmed obsolescence of products that use technology within their useful life. This work aims to connect the benefits provided by technology within products by projecting a proposal that has a longer useful life thanks to the adaptation of the product to the user. It deals with the design of children's furniture, an intelligent cot, which adjusts to the needs of the first stage of life by including sensors and components that improve the baby's rest, and which, in turn, incorporates modularity in its design to be able to adapt to the following stages of the child's life up to the age of 12. The proposed methodology incorporates a series of methods and techniques that provide a 5-phase structure that includes a group of experts who work transversally in the product design process to strengthen decision-making and prioritisation of the needs raised. Several alternatives are developed and, thanks to the evaluation based on the needs extracted at the beginning of the process together with the design requirements, the one that best satisfies both areas is chosen. Abstract:
People residing in urban environments, particularly children inhabiting apartments, often contend with limited space for movement. Children require sufficient space for physical activity to support their physical and psychological development. This study analyzes furniture design's influence on children's development. It employs a qualitative research approach with a phenomenological orientation and descriptive analysis. The data collection methods employed in this study encompass literature review, observation, and interviews. The study's participants consist of infants (newborn to 18 months) and toddlers (18 to 36 months) residing in apartments within Kalibata City, along with their caregivers. The study's findings indicate that furniture within confined spaces is not adequately tailored to children's activities and needs, consequently negatively impacting their physical and psychological well-being. Therefore, a furniture redesign to accommodate children's activities and support their development is imperative. This research recommends optimizing furniture design, encompassing construction systems, materials, safety measures, dimensions, and age-appropriate usage. The insights gleaned from this study hold significant value for the real estate industry, furniture design sector, interior design profession, and consumers.

Abstract:
Purpose From an interpretive semiology perspective this paper examines the meaning suggested by the absence of children in newspaper advertisements, commercial websites and catalogue images of children’s furniture manufacturers. The purpose of the paper is to highlight the multilayered process involved in conveying meaning to the “parent-child cluster” consumer through press and online advertisements designed by children’s furniture manufacturers. Design/methodology/approach A corpus of 200 press advertisements and catalogues produced by children's furniture manufacturers (particularly IKEA and Gautier) was analysed using a combination of Barthes’ (1964) visual analysis and Greimas’ (1987) narrative approach to visual discourses. Findings The scenes portrayed to shape the message addressed to the “parent-child cluster“ consumer, suggest that, in addition to fostering positive values such as self-fulfilment and stimulating background for an active child, they also promote discourses about contemporary childhood and parenthood. Originality/value This paper highlights how furniture retailers through the figurative choices they make to portray a child bedroom and to organize a series of child bedroom images within a catalogue, generate a brand discourse aiming to typify representations of childhood imbued with diverse cognitive, social and emotional dimensions within diverse cultural backgrounds.

Abstract:
The design evaluation method of furniture products was explored for modular children’s wooden storage cabinets. An evaluation model consisting of the Kano model, hierarchical analysis, and grey relational analysis is proposed. A 25-member panel of experts was involved in the development of the evaluation guidelines and the scoring of the program. The expert group used the KJ method to obtain evaluation guidelines for modular children’s wooden furniture that met the requirements of the hierarchical analysis method and screened the functional indicators through 103 validated questionnaires for the Kano model. The evaluation guidelines of modularized children’s wooden storage cabinets were thus obtained, which are both comprehensive and targeted. Then, hierarchical analysis and grey relational analysis were combined to select the solution with the highest grey weighted correlation result as the best solution. The feasibility of the grey comprehensive evaluation method, which combines subjective preference and objective empowerment, in the field of furniture was confirmed through the practice of selecting the best of the three modular children’s wooden storage cabinet design solutions, and the evaluation preference of the modular children’s wooden storage cabinet was uncovered. The design model provides an innovative evaluation tool for children’s furniture manufacturers to optimize their sales strategies.

Abstract:
Research shows the importance of a childhood home environment encouraging of creative and imaginative play. I designed a set of children's furniture that, in addition to being play toys, stimulates creativity, interactivity and understanding of design construction. When a child understands how furniture is assembled and is encouraged to be creative in play, he or she gains valuable learning experiences while having fun. Together, a child and adult can easily assemble all the pieces of furniture without any need for tools. Much like a puzzle, the child has fun assembling the furniture while, at the same time, learns valuable lessons of spatial relationships and structural stability. This also leads to an understanding of safety in play. The added element of a portable three-inch LED orb encourages interaction once all pieces are assembled. Abstract design elements were used to stimulate imagination during play. Using basic Gestalt design principles, the furniture series was constructed to not only be structural but to be beautiful in design. The curved abstract shapes encourage the child to take control and imagine the furniture as integral components of their play scene.

Abstract:
In recent years substantial investment has been made to replace or refurbish state schools in England and Wales and, although research has unsuccessfully sought to prove its contribution, the discipline of Design continues to be identified as a facilitator of educational transformation. Results to date, however, are mixed and there is an evident failing at the design briefing stage to understand how children interact with their educational settings and, notably, an avoidance of direct challenge to the primary school classroom and its practice. In response, this thesis asks how the social and cultural study of children’s relationships with their physical school can suggest a meaningful approach to primary school architecture and furniture design. A model of well-being is developed to clarify misused terminology and to present a realistic expectation of design in which the contradictory goals of inclusion and the development of the individual are appraised. Sitting within a diverse grounded methodology, the concept of belonging is then explored as a basis for evaluating the contribution of different aspects of the physical school to children’s well-being. The primary school environments studied were found to limit the possibilities of a child’s well-being. School architecture through to classroom wall displays were complicit in restricting physical and social expression in favour of school organisation and, furthermore, the central child-teacher relationship was found to be unnecessarily devalued by behavioural concerns derived from the setting. By ethically interpreting the rich variety of children’s voices, priorities for what is coined here as child-teacher centred design are established and a clear relationship between architecture and furniture is offered. The thesis recommends that architecture continues to perform a protective classroom role to support objectives of inclusion whilst school furniture supports more affective, individualistic goals through less prescriptive and more varied settings for learning.

The main scientific problem of the dissertation research is children's development environment formation, which is capable of transformation and promotes socio-communicative, cognitive, speech, artistic, aesthetic and physical children's development. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the complex consideration and analysis of the formation peculiarities of the environment, which is capable of transformation, for children's development. For the first time on the basis of existing samples of children's furniture the typology of transformation of furniture and the equipment of environment for children's development has been developed; the constructive-technological and artistic-figurative features of transformation of furniture and equipment of children's development environment have been expanded and improved; the functions performed by the transformation in the formation of the subject content of children's development environment and the functions performed by the furniture-transformers for playing have been substantiated; the definition of "children's furniture" and "shape-shifting furniture" has been proposed; the author's model of the environment with the function of transformation for children's development has been proposed. Specialized material related to the subject content formation of children's development environment has been improved. The necessity of using constructive-technological and artistic-figurative features of transformation in designing children's development environment has been emphasized. The typical model of creating children's development environment has been improved. Interdisciplinary and system approaches in solving the tasks have become the methodological basis of the work. General scientific (theoretical and empirical) and special research methods have been used in the work. It has been shown that the principle of transformation is fundamental in industrial design modern objects shaping, which is associated with the provision of many important functions of human life. The author offers his own interpretation of the term "children's furniture". It is a set of built-in or mobile elements of interior equipment designed for children corresponding to the age characteristics of the children's organism. The author also offers definitions of "children's development environment" and "shape-shifting furniture". Thus, children's development environment is a set of interconnected objects, people and processes that constantly surround the person, ensuring his or her development. Children's development environment is characterized by integrity, dynamism, multi-vector, socio-cultural mobility, emotional saturation, coordination, etc. Shape-shifting furniture is the transformer furniture in which not the piece of furniture itself is changed, but its consumer properties or the way the observer evaluates these properties. This furniture, when rotated by a certain angle (usually 180 °, rarely 90 °) is perceived as a new object, possibly with a function completely different from the previous one. Taking into consideration the interdisciplinary nature of the research problem and the complexity of the object of study, complex, environmental, historical, cultural and structural-functional approaches have been chosen as the methodological basis of the study. Factors influencing children's development environment formation have been identified: physical, spatial, ergonomic, ecological, aesthetic and age factors. It has been found that the following requirements are set for the formation of children's environment subject content: anthropometric compliance, psycho-emotional compliance and safety. It has been proved that children's environment plays a very important role in the development of child's personality, because it is a playroom, a place where studying of the world begins, and a bedroom. The correct formation of his or her personality, development of abilities and talents often depend on how convenient and comfortable the child is in his room. Children's furniture should be bright, light, mobile, stable, multifunctional, safe. Figurative principles of shaping furniture-transformers for children have been identified and characterized: the principle of nonlinearity, the principle of fractality, the principle of transferring the plastic properties of the material to the object, the principle of "transfer of the situation", tangram principle, bionics principle and origami principle. In the dissertation research the author makes a comparative description of a typical model of children's development environment with a new proposed model, which is endowed with the function of transformation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: This research project is focused in the child's wellbeing and in the surrounding material world. Its overall objectives are, to contribute to a better adaptation of furniture to the child, leading to an extension of the average lifespan of products and to sustainability; create a better material environment for children, making it more attractive, healthy and sustainable. Its specific goals are, the search for a more profound understanding about this issues, taking it into practice in a project of children's home furniture, more specifically, of a high chair for children aged 6 months up to 7 years, in order to find solutions physically and psychologically more confortable and stable, which can contribute to sustainable development; the provision of information to professionals in this sector, through an active dissemination. In this research it was used a mixed methodology mainly qualitative, although with some quantitative data. In its first phase, a theorical-historical contextualization was made through literary review and exploratory interviews to parents and children were conducted. A case study was developed, with 10 examples of high chair models, available in the current market. A study with pre-school children was also made, with the Tripp Trapp® chair, from Stokke® brand, Norway. In a second and empirical phase, interviews to experts in design, production, health and child's safety were conducted, as well as a research about materials and technologies, using contacts with the industry. Meanwhile, a third phase was being developed, also empirical, essentially consisting of project and prototyping of a children's high chair, which is intended to be feasible in a productive level, solving the identified problems and with low environmental impact. Throughout this investigation, an active dissemination was lead, resulting in several contributions for this research with significant essay writing and publication. The two high chair prototypes and one comfort cushion (made in partnership with the textile company TintexTextiles), were evaluated by a sample group of direct and indirect users (children of several age groups and parents) and by an experts' panel, in order to identify problems and/or gaps, leading to reformulations of the project, also returning to the hypothesis or argument. It was possible to conclude, through an optimized design product for children, that it is possible to achieve a greater adaptation to the child's development, with solutions, which can contribute to sustainability. This research also leaves recommendations for future research.

Abstract:
When designing a product, frequently the focus stands on function and utility issues, however searching what kind of features can promote a bigger emotional attachment to objects is an important step for a design project. With the creation of more suitable and sustainable children's furniture as an overall objective, namely a chair that can follow child's growth from 6 months up to 7 years old, we aim to produce an object for children to bond, because affection can be the most important number in this equation. This is a mix of interview-based study with quasi-experimental drawing sessions in order to illustrate children's feelings and expectations towards the Tripp Trapp® chair, which is more than 40 years in the market, designed by Peter Opsvik and produced by Stokke® - our main case study. It gives us clues to understand what the chair of their dreams would be like and what they feel sitting on an existing chair. We identified problems concerning comfort and communication with this chair, which has very large acceptance between parents worldwide but doesn't seem so appealing to children.

Abstract:
This paper reports a study in the context of a product design research about classroom furniture in Vietnam and is based on the review of literature. The objective of the research project is to help improve Vietnamese children's well-being, developing a proposal of classroom furniture more adapted to primary school children, using local materials and production processes, reducing carbon footprint and contributing to sustainability. In this Southeast Asian country, children spend a long time at school, daily, performing a lot of different activities and are still experiencing non-suitable classroom furniture, leading to wrong posture, posing safety risks and possibly harming their present and future health. Sustainability also seems to be overlooked, as the application of materials with less environmental impact is not a priority. The study helped on the contextualization and definition of the problem, providing information about the status quo in Vietnamese primary schools' furniture and pointed directions on this research project, towards more sustainable choices on materials, such as bamboo and its production processes. Adaptation to the Child is an aim in both health and environmental levels. Children's well-being at school depends on the interaction and comfort with their surroundings, including adapted and sustainable classroom furniture, which can support a healthier learning experience.

Abstract:
This paper contains the first stage of a research developed by Buen Comienzo Programme, Medellin Mayor’s Office and a group of Architects, to identify the minimum area required for a child aged between 3 and 5 years old, while occupying a kindergarten. According to the Colombian Technical Regulation (NTC4595) for architectural design in Colombia, the minimum area for Educational Buildings is 2 m2 per child. This measure includes: the work area (0,5 m x 0,7 m =0,35 m2) per student, the storage area (10% of the work area, 0,035 m2), and the area for general furniture. Pursuant to this standard, it can be deducted that occupancy of buildings is determined by the regular furniture dimensions. However, the movements of children are determined not only by furniture but also by their relationship with other children. Therefore, data of children’s dimensions in movement can improve the decision making process for the architectural design, pedagogy and the review of regulations. This research was developed considering that a child spends 70% of their time in a kindergarten, in constant interaction with other children, objects and furniture. The content will refer to the review of world and local regulation about children occupancy in educational buildings.
