Abstract:
Research shows the importance of a childhood home environment encouraging of creative and imaginative play. I designed a set of children's furniture that, in addition to being play toys, stimulates creativity, interactivity and understanding of design construction. When a child understands how furniture is assembled and is encouraged to be creative in play, he or she gains valuable learning experiences while having fun. Together, a child and adult can easily assemble all the pieces of furniture without any need for tools. Much like a puzzle, the child has fun assembling the furniture while, at the same time, learns valuable lessons of spatial relationships and structural stability. This also leads to an understanding of safety in play. The added element of a portable three-inch LED orb encourages interaction once all pieces are assembled. Abstract design elements were used to stimulate imagination during play. Using basic Gestalt design principles, the furniture series was constructed to not only be structural but to be beautiful in design. The curved abstract shapes encourage the child to take control and imagine the furniture as integral components of their play scene.

Abstract:
In recent years substantial investment has been made to replace or refurbish state schools in England and Wales and, although research has unsuccessfully sought to prove its contribution, the discipline of Design continues to be identified as a facilitator of educational transformation. Results to date, however, are mixed and there is an evident failing at the design briefing stage to understand how children interact with their educational settings and, notably, an avoidance of direct challenge to the primary school classroom and its practice. In response, this thesis asks how the social and cultural study of children’s relationships with their physical school can suggest a meaningful approach to primary school architecture and furniture design. A model of well-being is developed to clarify misused terminology and to present a realistic expectation of design in which the contradictory goals of inclusion and the development of the individual are appraised. Sitting within a diverse grounded methodology, the concept of belonging is then explored as a basis for evaluating the contribution of different aspects of the physical school to children’s well-being. The primary school environments studied were found to limit the possibilities of a child’s well-being. School architecture through to classroom wall displays were complicit in restricting physical and social expression in favour of school organisation and, furthermore, the central child-teacher relationship was found to be unnecessarily devalued by behavioural concerns derived from the setting. By ethically interpreting the rich variety of children’s voices, priorities for what is coined here as child-teacher centred design are established and a clear relationship between architecture and furniture is offered. The thesis recommends that architecture continues to perform a protective classroom role to support objectives of inclusion whilst school furniture supports more affective, individualistic goals through less prescriptive and more varied settings for learning.

The main scientific problem of the dissertation research is children's development environment formation, which is capable of transformation and promotes socio-communicative, cognitive, speech, artistic, aesthetic and physical children's development. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the complex consideration and analysis of the formation peculiarities of the environment, which is capable of transformation, for children's development. For the first time on the basis of existing samples of children's furniture the typology of transformation of furniture and the equipment of environment for children's development has been developed; the constructive-technological and artistic-figurative features of transformation of furniture and equipment of children's development environment have been expanded and improved; the functions performed by the transformation in the formation of the subject content of children's development environment and the functions performed by the furniture-transformers for playing have been substantiated; the definition of "children's furniture" and "shape-shifting furniture" has been proposed; the author's model of the environment with the function of transformation for children's development has been proposed. Specialized material related to the subject content formation of children's development environment has been improved. The necessity of using constructive-technological and artistic-figurative features of transformation in designing children's development environment has been emphasized. The typical model of creating children's development environment has been improved. Interdisciplinary and system approaches in solving the tasks have become the methodological basis of the work. General scientific (theoretical and empirical) and special research methods have been used in the work. It has been shown that the principle of transformation is fundamental in industrial design modern objects shaping, which is associated with the provision of many important functions of human life. The author offers his own interpretation of the term "children's furniture". It is a set of built-in or mobile elements of interior equipment designed for children corresponding to the age characteristics of the children's organism. The author also offers definitions of "children's development environment" and "shape-shifting furniture". Thus, children's development environment is a set of interconnected objects, people and processes that constantly surround the person, ensuring his or her development. Children's development environment is characterized by integrity, dynamism, multi-vector, socio-cultural mobility, emotional saturation, coordination, etc. Shape-shifting furniture is the transformer furniture in which not the piece of furniture itself is changed, but its consumer properties or the way the observer evaluates these properties. This furniture, when rotated by a certain angle (usually 180 °, rarely 90 °) is perceived as a new object, possibly with a function completely different from the previous one. Taking into consideration the interdisciplinary nature of the research problem and the complexity of the object of study, complex, environmental, historical, cultural and structural-functional approaches have been chosen as the methodological basis of the study. Factors influencing children's development environment formation have been identified: physical, spatial, ergonomic, ecological, aesthetic and age factors. It has been found that the following requirements are set for the formation of children's environment subject content: anthropometric compliance, psycho-emotional compliance and safety. It has been proved that children's environment plays a very important role in the development of child's personality, because it is a playroom, a place where studying of the world begins, and a bedroom. The correct formation of his or her personality, development of abilities and talents often depend on how convenient and comfortable the child is in his room. Children's furniture should be bright, light, mobile, stable, multifunctional, safe. Figurative principles of shaping furniture-transformers for children have been identified and characterized: the principle of nonlinearity, the principle of fractality, the principle of transferring the plastic properties of the material to the object, the principle of "transfer of the situation", tangram principle, bionics principle and origami principle. In the dissertation research the author makes a comparative description of a typical model of children's development environment with a new proposed model, which is endowed with the function of transformation.

Abstract: In transportation, for ambulances, children are exposed to fatal risks by transported in adult gurneys that are not adapted to child anthropometry. The situation is escalated when considering the fact that the ambulances move up in high speeds and with frequently need to reduce abruptly velocity. In this field, we tried to design, build and test a prototype gurney with an effective restraint system for emergency transport children. The differential of the project regards to other children gurneys that exist in the international market; its versatility to perform both transport in ambulances and possible land rescue. Child gurney enables a wide range of small patients from children with one (1) until ten (10) years old, designed for fast handling and storage by be foldable and easy to install on any adult gurney standardized by ABNT. The main safety factor is linked to the adjustable retention system with facility for rapid attachment and the child's removal. Impact tests were performed, with an approximate speed of 18 (twenty) km / h, using the adult gurney and child gurney. The dummy with mass 22 kg, representing a child with 6 (six) years old, was installed in sitting and lying positions. Data collected via a computer program Kinovea suitable for biomechanical analysis, allowed to estimate displacement of the dummy with great precision. It was used a smartphone based on Android operational system to register decelerations occurred on impact. Child gurney had a higher retention regarding to adult gurney both the displacement of the head when the dummy torso restraint. In two teste with lying position, the dummy was ejected out of the gurney, fact that had never happened with child gurney. Tests conducted with the prototype gurney validated the project and the constructive solution that are bind to a patent to will be implanted in Brazil

Under the trend of pregnancy at advanced maternal age and low birth rate, the modern parents are willing to pay more attention and money on raising children. It makes them become a consumption group which should not be underestimated. Children grow fast mentally and physically, which makes children furniture unusable soon and causes crowded space in the house. Most predecessors of the children furniture brands in Taiwan were operated by original equipment manufacturing. The brands were not built until these years, but they are still limited to goods sales without multidimensional operation plans. However, their development of service innovation still has high plasticity. The purposes of this study are to discuss consumer’s needs of services from children furniture businesses via consumer service decision processes, to find out consumers’ expectations and observe the services provided by children furniture businesses simultaneously via consumer questionnaires, and finally to conclude strategies for service innovation verified via expert questionnaires, making the services from the children furniture industry more diverse and multidimensional and thereby building the market segmentation. The study results showed that: (1) “Information service” is what the most needed to customers in the process of buying and using child furniture, as well as what the most deficient to businesses, becoming the biggest service gap, (2) Child furniture businesses currently keep operating with the basic consumption process service model and extremely lack innovative and systematic service plans, (3) To draw up different strategies for service innovation according to consumer decision processes would more easily be accepted, (4) “Virtual technology service” is a common consensus between the industrial and academic circles, and (5) The biggest cognitive difference the industrial and academic circles have is the dimension “new customer surface.”
