Chronic lung disease in prematurely born infants, defined as the need for increased inspired oxygen at 28 days of age, was thought to be more common in some institutions than in others. To test this hypothesis, we surveyed the experience in the intensive care nurseries at Columbia and Vanderbilt Universities, the Universities of Texas at Dallas, Washington at Seattle, and California at San Francisco, the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, and Mt Sinai Hospital in Toronto. The survey included 1,625 infants with birth weights of 700 to 1,500 g. We confi

IntroductionChildren who are deaf or hard-of-hearing (DHH) are at risk for speech and language delay. Language outcomes are worse in DHH children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, due in part to disparities in access to specialised speech-language therapy. Teletherapy may help improve access to this specialised care and close this language gap. Inclusion of diverse DHH children in prospective randomised clinical trials has been challenging but is necessary to address disparities and pursue hearing health equity. Abstract One of the most controversial areas in which law and public policy are confronted with ideas of “nature” and “social construction” is the area of same-sex sexual orientation and conduct. Same-sex relations are an especially obvious case of the ways in which laws and institutions shape the intimate personal lives of many Americans. The sexual conduct of gays and lesbians is limited by the sodomy laws that still exist in twenty-three states. Although only five states restrict the prohibition of oral and anal sex acts to same-sex actors, the constitutionality of sodomy laws has been uphe

The human remains recovered from the pit excavated near the Point San Jose Hospital were analyzed to determine the possible causes of the observable taphonomic modifications. Microscopy was used to distinguish root etchings from incised and saw cut marks. Localized staining was analyzed using portable X-ray fluorescence. The results of these analyses suggest that the remains had previously been used as teaching specimens or were the result of practice medical amputations. These remains were eventually improperly discarded along with medical waste in an unmarked pit on the grounds of the fort.
