Access to health care for children is important. It is dependent on access to health professionals and also parental attitudes towards illness. Children have the right to receive medicines that are scientifically evaluated for both efficacy and safety. Counterfeit and substandard medicines unfortunately result in the death of many children worldwide. There have been particular problems with diethylene glycol which has been used as a solvent in counterfeit medicines. It has also been found in contaminated substandard medicines. Identifying the aetiological cause of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) is difficult at the best of times, and more than 20 viruses and bacteria have been associated with LRTIs, which cannot be distinguished with clinical examination alone. Viruses can be detected in respiratory samples by a variety of methods, and without

Abstract:
Administering medicine to children is a part of everyday nursing practice that is complex and multifaceted. However, medicine errors are prevalent in all areas of nursing. One means for strengthening a system of safe medicine administration might lie in developing student nurse preparation for registered practice. This thesis evaluated nurse preparation for administering medicine to children using a multi-stage descriptive design. Preparation through one Diploma in Nursing was evaluated over a period of two years. 20 registered nurses were initially interviewed, and 201 activities characterisi

Abstract:
A medicine will not elicit its desired therapeutic effect if the patient is not able or willing to take it. The specific needs of the target population must be taken into account in the design of medicines. Evaluation of the effect of formulation factors on patient’s acceptability could guide the development of better medicines for children. Flexible solid oral dosage forms, including multiparticulates and (oro)dispersible formulations, offer advantages over conventional solid and liquid dosage forms to meet the needs of paediatric patients. These advantages include favourable stability profil

The development of age appropriate paediatric formulations, particularly those suitable for young children, presents challenges with only limited knowledge available on the acceptability of different medicines and how this affects medication adherence. Abstract:
Parents of children with a chronic disease are usually highly involved in their child’s treatment and may be affected by the heavy demands and constant stress. This can increase the risk of developing burnout, which is an individual reaction to long-term stress consisting of symptoms associated with emotional exhaustion, as well as physical and cognitive fatigue. The overall aim was to estimate the prevalence of burnout in parents of children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) (paper I), identify the risk factors associated with parenting a child with T1D

In recent decades the number of children with overweight has increased worldwide. To understand the mechanisms behind this development, knowledge regarding metabolism and physiology in relation to the nutritional situation in early life is of importance. In particular, information about body composition development during early childhood is relevant. This thesis presents three studies in this area. In the pregnancy study serum samples, collected from 23 women before, during and after pregnancy, were analysed for serum levels of leptin, adiponectin and resistin and used to assess insulin resist
