Abstract:
This article deals with the contrasting views of designers, educationalists and scientific legibility researchers concerning children’s typefaces. Guidelines about typefaces and their legibility for beginner readers remain inconclusive due to these different perspectives. The article first discusses the opinions of each of these parties on children’s typefaces. Educationalists’ views are often based on prejudices and forces of habit. Designers tend to follow the views of their potential clients and scientific legibility researchers often lack typographical knowledge for creating valid test material. To conclude, a new perspective on a need for collaboration between the different parties within typographic design research is suggested. This approach might be able not only to acquire a deeper understanding and explanation of the question which typefaces are best for children, but also for the development and design of concrete new, functional typefaces and/or guidelines.

Abstract:
The popularity of social media attracts many people to participate in various activities every day. Social media usually comes in the form of audio, graphics, video text and animations that provide convenience to its users to disseminate and access information quickly amd easily. Without realizing it, parents often show off their children's personal data in their parents' and children's accounts, usually for personal or business purposes. The purpose of this study is to examine more about the efforts made by parents to protect children's data privacy on Instagram social media accounts. This study uses the meta-analysis method of the literature study on previous studies. In this study, we want to see how the role of digital literacy in protecting children's personal data is and how to conceptualize children's self-protection digital literacy on social media. The findings of this study with the concept, threats, recommendations regarding the importance of digital literacy for personal data protection and conceptual integration can be used as a reference in further research. The protection of children's personal data is important to thwart the threat of cyber crime, violence and online extortion. It can also be one of the guarantees for children’s good growth and development because the data will not be misused by other parties for financial gain or to threaten children.

Abstract:
Children's birthday parties, and related consumption, form an integral part of the social process of mothering in contemporary consumer culture. From the choosing of the 'right' present to the arrangement of the 'appropriate' party theme, an enormous pressure is exerted upon mothers to maintain social equilibrium through the circulation of their children and gifts amongst and across households. Ethnographic research in Britain suggests that the economic growth of children's party provision and services is coupled with a popular discourse that laments the loss of 'authentic' kinship-based birthday parties and home-made provisioning. In contrast to this spoken discourse, this article reveals how women in fact avidly embrace market goods and services; as a means of generating a culture of sameness that avoids the risks (to the motherhood as a collective, localised phenomenon) of exceptional or overtly accomplished mothering. Commercialised, mass produced goods and birthday services are used as a means of limiting expressive gift relations and hospitality. In this sense, the search for sameness, through the cultural practice of making children's parties, is at once liberating and potentially oppressive in its strive for the normative and its inadvertent exclusion of 'other' care-givers. Furthermore, children and their related material culture are consumed, through the birthday party circuit, as a means of generating specific types of mothering.

Abstract:
This article aims to highlight Islamic exclusivism in the form of popular Islamic novelS for children’s reading books in Indonesia after the reform of 1998. Building on the media theory of Gill Branston and Roy Stafford, this study explains Islamic pop novels as Islamic educational materials from a semiotic approach, structuralism, and critical discourse analysis. In particular, this study uses qualitative research methods by descriptively analyzing the reading of Islamic pop novels spreading in the Qur’anic Education Centre in Central Java. The results showed that since the Reformation, the movement used books, newsletters, magazines, and children’s readings of Islamic pop novels to shape the religious thoughts of urban Muslim children and youth in Indonesia. There is hardly a story related to diversity, the value of tolerance, and mutual respect between religious people in those materials. The awareness of religious comprehension in children's reading seems exclusive. It must be realized by various parties that the media utilizing Islamic literature is very influential on the growth and development of children's religious thinking in the educational space in the metropolis.

Abstract:
In the context of claims for harta sepencarian (matrimonial property) division, the parties involved will seek to persuade the court of their entitlement to the harta sepencarian or to a larger share thereof. However, the specific needs of children under their care seldom receive the required attention during proceedings and judgments rendered by Shariah Courts when distributing harta sepencarian. This is because discussions about children's needs typically arise in custody-related cases rather than in harta sepencarian cases. Therefore, it's crucial to evaluate how judges consider children's needs when determining the division of harta sepencarian to ensure their welfare. This article aims to investigate the extent to which children’s needs are taken into consideration when deciding the division rate of harta sepencarian, a dimension notably marginalized in the majority of Shariah Court cases involving the division of harta sepencarian in Malaysia. This qualitative study used the content analysis design to descriptively analyse documents in order to explore implicit elements of children's needs that may impact court decisions when distributing harta sepencarian. The findings identified several key elements of children's needs that could influence court decisions related to asset division in harta sepencarian, including considerations related to housing, sustenance, childcare, and education, although these aspects are not explicitly emphasized in court proceedings by either the presiding judge or the litigants.

AbstractArticle 20 of the UNCRC entitles young people in residential care to 'special protection.' This presents a challenge to States Parties concerned with how such protection can be achieved. It is suggested that one way to do this is through the establishment and delivery of meaningful training in children's rights. This paper describes the authors' experience of delivering a training programme on children's rights for staff working in Social Protection Centres in Vietnam. It provides a critical reflection on the broad emphasis of current children's rights training in the developing world and argues for more targeted research in this area.

Abstract:
In Saudi Arabia, the right to education for children is considered of utmost importance through the official education system, which provides a legal framework to protect them. This system mandates the provision of basic education for all children without any discrimination. and it is essential for parents to actively participate in this field by cooperating with educational authorities and providing a supportive environment for children's learning. Despite these legal guarantees, there remain challenges related to effectively implementing these policies, and there may be instances of arbitrariness or negligence in providing education by parents. Therefore, establishing effective mechanisms for monitoring implementation and holding responsible parties accountable is necessary. Additionally, emphasis is placed on raising awareness about children's rights and the importance of obtaining a good education within society. Consequently, ensuring this right requires integrated efforts between the government and civil society to improve the quality of education and its provision.

Abstract:
Tema balon sangat dominan dalam menentukan bentuk fisik bangunan yang terelaborasikan pada konsep bentuk bangunan, konsep material bangunan dan konsekwensinya terhadap interior bangunan.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------One third of Indonesia's population consists of children, with a total of around 80 million children. Children are the nation's most valuable asset as a determinant of Indonesia's future. Children are a golden period of human growth and development. Children grow and develop every day through play. In Riau, Rokan Hulu Regency has 231,055 children. In general, children in Rokan Hulu play indoors, in the yard, in residential alleys, or on the streets, due to the lack of green open space and child-friendly public facilities. The need to ensure that children have a well-designed, safe, and play environment that can stimulate children's development encourages the formation of a Children's Play Center. The Children's Play Center is a supervised children's play center, which helps stimulate children's development through materials and architecture. Play is a way for a child to express himself, so that the application of Expressionist Architecture is in accordance with the function of the design object. The concept applied to the Children's Play Center is “Balon”, because children generally like balloons. Balloons express parties, celebrations and make the atmosphere more festive.

Abstract:
This PhD dissertation analyses the processes used by political parties to select candidates for the European elections, making the unique institutional setting and electoral dynamics of the European Parliament a “litmus test” for party organisations. By applying an institutional design theory to the ways parties nominate their candidates for the EP, I can test a wide range of pre-existing postulates about parties’ behaviours, and can do so across many different countries (thus considering various electoral settings and socio-political arenas) while also accounting for the multi-level setting in which they operate. To this end, I thoroughly explore the intra-party “machinery” at work in the drafting of nominees. More specifically, this dissertation first provides a descriptive account of the main intra-party formal rules that govern the EP selection procedures from a comparative perspective. Concretely, this descriptive analysis serves to measure the relative power of individuals, party organs, and party levels, and to establish what imperatives (membership fees, endorsements, incompatibilities, quotas) are prescribed by the various parties. On that basis, I identify the patterns of selection rules put in place by the parties. I then explore the factors that condition the parties' choices of procedures by relating the aforementioned observations to a number of national- and EU-level characteristics. Later, I confront these rules with the parties’ informal practices during the actual process, and further trace an entire process from the rules' enactment to the choice of candidates. In doing so, I hope to contribute a small but important building block to the understanding of current political parties, while also speaking directly to those who are more generally interested in comparative politics and EU politics.

Abstract:
Since the end of the decade of 70 it comes saying in crisis and reform of the State. The containment of the expenses and the fiscal reform are especially drive to reduction of the social politics and of the sector of services, including there governmental services destined to infancy and adolescence in situation of personal and social risk, that consists one of the more fragile populations of the society. Recent studies have indicated that it does not have a so great reduction of the investments in the social area, but a realocation of these resources between the diverse public politics; as well as they indicate that politician-partisan ideology of that they are in the government influence the bases the public investment in the social area. We objectify with this work, to evaluate the impact of the change in the municipal administration in the city of Ribeirão Preto, in virtue of the 1996 election, in the attendance the children and adolescents in risk situation, verifying as the ideology politician-partisan influenced in the attention to infancy and the definition of the social politics. For this, we opt to a research of qualitative matrix, using as instrument of collection of data the documentary analysis, and as analysis method, the Analysis Content, having as unit of analysis the subject. They are being analyzed the Programs and Statutes of the Parties that headed coalition elect in the lawsuits of 1992 and 1996, respectively PT and PSDB; the Programs of Government of the two managements and documents and reports produced for these managements. The analysis of the data discloses a difference of emphasis in the two Programs of Government, with the Program of the elect government in 1992 giving a bigger accent in its performance to the social area, while the elect one in 1996 gives a bigger emphasis to the economic development, going to the meeting of the trend observed in the analysis of the Partisan Programs. Also a rupture is observed and discontinuity enters the politics for adopted infancy and adolescence; with both the managements reorganizing the structure of the services inside of the Secretariat of Social Welfare /Citizenship and Social Developement, being the set of the configured programs of a very different form of the previous one. The expenses with social assistance in management 1997-2000, going in the direction of the found in literature, had been greaters that in the previous management, while the number of attendence carried through for the public service diminished, having had an aiming of these expenses for the private sector of assistance to infancy in risk situation, what it is configured while a standard of customer service similar to whom existed in the beggining of the social assistance in Brazil and in the city.

Abstract:
Epidemiological studies in children suggest that inhalation of carbonaceous particulate matter (PM) adversely affects children's respiratory health. However, the relationship between markers of PM exposure and the quantity of particles entering the paediatric airway is unclear. The hypothesis was that, the carbon in alveolar macrophages (AM) reflects individual exposure of healthy children to PM. The aim was to quantify carbon in AM in extreme (biomass smoke) and with fossil fuel exposure. For fossil fuel exposure the aim was also to establish the relationship between median carbon loading per AM per child and: i) markers of exposures at the home address and ii) lung function iii) markers of airway inflammation. Healthy children were recruited from schools. Exercise parameters recorded. Environmental smoke exposure was excluded by salivary cotinine. AM were sampled by induced sputum. Median carbon area was determined by image analysis of digitized light microscopic images of AM. The median area of AM carbon was higher in Ethiopian women compared with UK adults, (p = 0.0002). Median carbon area in Ethiopian children was higher than UK children (p = 0.0002). In fossil-fuel exposure group, a weak, but significantly positive, association was found between median carbon area and modelled primary PM10 (p = 0.022), and a stronger inverse association between median carbon area and FEV1% predicted (p = 0.004), and FEF25-75% predicted (p = 0.004). There was no significant association between median carbon area and exercise variables and markers of airway inflammation.

Abstract:
AbstractDespite the recent international ascendance of children as independent actors and rights bearers, reiterated by the UNCRC, in the eyes of the state children appear as not-yet-fully-citizens. As minors, they do not have the capacity to launch legal procedures on their own behalf or to formally approach a court of law to vindicate their rights, independently of their parents or legal guardians. In other words, in the twenty-first century, when child-driven effective pro se representation, or a form of representation of a child by a child before the court, still appears utopian, the indispensability of adult legal actors as conduits to children’s access to justice is an undeniable reality and contingent on a multiplicity of social, political and economic factors that influence what forms of children’s representation that is made possible. However, while the representation of children by the third parties has received criticism both in social anthropology, and in (critical) childhood studies, scholars have only rarely addressed forms of representation and active litigation on behalf of the child, conducted by legal professionals in different arenas—in the domestic courts, such as the immigration courts, and in international institutions, such as the EHRC and the UNCRC.This chapter builds on earlier published anthropological and socio-legal analysis of court cases related to migration and political activism as well as on a number of original cases from both national and international tribunals collected through interviews and fieldwork observations. It aims at complexifying the existent models of children’s representation, while tackling broader issues of access to justice of the disadvantaged groups. By laying the focus on interactions among children and their lawyers, the objective is to deepen the conceptual understanding of the ways children and their lawyers conceptualize processes of justice-making and make sense of shifting social and legal terrains around the conceptions of representation. In what way are professional legal representation any different from other forms of representation and are they alienating or empowering? What are the exact legal mechanisms, social processes and agents that enable such cases to become legally actionable and contribute to recognizing children’s role as legal subjects?

Abstract:
AbstractThese two articles place obligations on States Parties regarding dissemination of information about the Convention. Article 42 demands that both adults and children must be informed about the rights in the Convention and its protocols. Rights holders must have knowledge of their rights and knowledge of how to exercise them if those rights are to be meaningful. Article 44(6) addresses the initial and periodic reports to the Committee on the Rights of the Child (the Committee) that States Parties are required to produce on progress in implementing the Convention and imposes an obligation on States Parties to disseminate the reports widely. The Committee insists that its Concluding Observations be broadly disseminated by States Parties, to inform the public of the responses given by governments and ensure accountability in this regard (2003, para. 73).

Abstract:
In modern practice of educational work in preschool institutions, portfolios are used as a way of monitoring and documenting childrenʼs development and progress. In the context of preschool education, portfolios have numerous functions and benefits. In addition to allowing educators to continuously monitor and document childrenʼs development and learning over an extended period of time, portfolios also facilitate the exchange of information about children's development with parents and other interested parties, as well as providing opportunities for critical reflection and evaluation. Unlike traditional portfolios that involve storing data in registers, boxes, or folders, electronic portfolios represent a collection of data in various formats, such as audio, video, and text. This paper highlights the importance, characteristics, and types of portfolios in preschool education, as well as the differences between traditional and electronic portfolios.

Abstract:
Intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) provide educational benefits through one-on-one tutoring by assessing children's existing knowledge and providing tailored educational content. In the domain of language acquisition, several studies have shown that children often learn new words by forming semantic relationships with words they already know. In this paper, we present a model that uses word semantics (semantics-based model) to make inferences about a child's vocabulary from partial information about their existing vocabulary knowledge. We show that the proposed semantics-based model outperforms models that do not use word semantics (semantics-free models) on average. A subject-level analysis of results reveals that different models perform well for different children, thus motivating the need to combine predictions. To this end, we use two methods to combine predictions from semantics-based and semantics-free models and show that these methods yield better predictions of a child's vocabulary knowledge. Our results motivate the use of semantics-based models to assess children's vocabulary knowledge and build ITS that maximizes children's semantic understanding of words.

Abstract:
This study examines the impact of COVID-19 on child and parent health and the institutes’ support for children with difficulties during the pandemic in Japan. Two surveys were implemented from October to November 2020. The “Parents and Children” survey included questions about demographic and household characteristics, the impact of COVID-19 on work and daily life, applications for financial support, relations with children and partners, and health conditions. The final sample comprised 2,582 parents with a child aged 0–18 and 1,032 children aged 9–18. The “Institutions” survey included questions about the impact of COVID-19 on services and cooperation with other related institutions. The final sample comprised 2,298 institutions responsible for education or healthcare services. The response rate was relatively high compared with similar surveys: 53.0% for maternal and child health divisions and 56.5% for child consultation centers. The parents’ and children’s survey revealed that around 90% of children felt stressed during the pandemic. The institutions’ survey revealed that child consultation centers received a greater number of inquiries about children’s sexual behavior problems and game addiction. A preventive social work approach is required to give a greater level of support to all children, even in unusual situations like the COVID-19 pandemic. Keywords: COVID-19, social work, child health

Abstract:
The aim of the study was to determine and interpret an empirical model of preschoolers’ friendship. The Observation scale for the evaluation of friendship in institutionally educated preschoolers was applied on the sample of preschool children (N = 2009), containing 52 entries for the educators to assess the frequency of friendship indicators with children of all age groups. The application of exploratory factor analysis resulted in the extraction of four reliable factors which may account for this complex research variable: 1) Friendship as a close step to altruism; 2) Friendship as distancing from egoism; 3) Friendship as distancing from narcissism; and 4) Friendship as giving and accepting love. The first two factors account for social behavior and emphasize socialization. On the other hand, the second two factors are based on the excessively emotional behavior and individualization. The egoism-altruism conflict (socialization) transforms into self-centeredness conflict (narcissism) – and in the process of growing up the emphasis is once again on individualization. Given the fact that friendship is the best indicator of growing up, it maintains one of central issues of education. The obtained results suggest that kindergartens, as the ecologically healthy environment, encourage friendship by fostering high-quality interactions and appreciating childrensʼ individual needs. The role of teachers is of an utmost relevance as they are both partners and friends who inspire friendship and social experience. Also, teachers provide support for spontaneous childrens' activities, including child's play in which interaction reaches its peak.

Abstract:
within the framework of the project "Scientific and Methodological Center", implemented by Regional Non-profit Organization "Center for Curative Pedagogics", a model playgroup for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) was created. The playgroup pursues goals from different areas of children's development. A complex of individual and group activities is compiled depending on the main tasks and characteristics of a particular child. The purpose of the study was to identify environmental factors in playgroup activities that contribute to the successful use of communication skills by children with ASD and positively influence their development. In developing situations, certain criteria for the organization and impact of the environment have been identified. A limited number of case studies show that children with ASD communicate better in spaces with low noise levels and fewer people. For children with ASD, it is important to be able to manage the interaction and influence the activity of the communicative partner. Further study of environmental factors requires the analysis of more cases

Abstract:
Parents are important educational partners in schools as they are the first educators of their children and play an important role in their children’s education, educational targets, and future professions for their children. Parents have their expectations about their children’s educational targets but are these expectations connected with targets defined in education documents, and more important – are these expectations aimed at the future perspective of education? The purpose of the study was to compare the educational targets of parents with educational targets defined in education documents – Latvia education system change project “School 2030” (Skola 2030), Sustainable Development Strategy of Latvia until 2030, and UNESCO new social contract for education for 2050. The methodology used in this study was an express – survey for parents, in May 2022, with the open question “What do you expect for your child’s educational targets?”; literature and source analysis with mapping review strategy, documents detecting the perspective of the education; finding educational target keywords, analysing data, and synthesising categories with data collected in express – survey; data analysis was done using data identifying method by selected keywords. Analysing three educational documents with the future perspective, 7 educational targets as keywords were found and analysed – curricula and skills, cooperation and collaboration, digitalization, inclusion, sustainability, research and innovations, and globalisation. 240 respondents participated in the express survey, detecting the problem of the research, that parents’ expectations only partly overlap educational targets defined in education documents. Analysing survey data, family and parents cannot be considered as educational partners in the educational process as is shown in literature and document analysis. There are two main survey answer tendencies – child-centred education and education based on knowledge and achievements. Parents’ behaviour is customer – centred, what is that school can provide for a child’s education.

Agüero, Jorge M. Causal Estimates of the Intangible Costs of Violence against Women in Latin America and the Caribbean. Inter-American Development Bank, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0011490.

Full text
Abstract:
Violence has a striking gender pattern. Men are more likely to be attacked by a stranger, while women experience violence mostly from their partners. This paper estimates the costs of violence against women in terms of intangible outcomes, such as women's reproductive health, labor supply, and the welfare of their children. The study uses a sample of nearly 83,000 women in seven countries from all income groups and all sub-regions in Latin American and the Caribbean. The sample, consisting of 26.3 million women between the ages of 15 and 49, strengthens the external validity of the results. The results show that physical violence against women is strongly associated with their marital status because it increases the divorce or separation rate. Violence is negatively linked with women's health. The study shows that domestic violence additionally creates a negative externality by affecting important short-term health outcomes for children whose mothers suffered from violence. To obtain the child health outcomes, the study employs a natural experiment in Peru to establish that these effects appear to be causal. Finally, the paper presents evidence indicating that women's education and age buffer the negative effect of violence against women on their children's health outcomes.

Abstract:
This policy brief uses data from the 2014/2015 Latin American Public Opinion Project survey to examine attitudes toward intimate partner violence and child physical discipline in six Caribbean countries. Although Latin America has a reputation for a particularly macho culture, Caribbean adults were 10.8 percent more likely to tolerate a man beating his wife if she neglects the household chores and 5.7 percent more likely to if she is unfaithful. Characteristics of those who were more tolerant of intimate partner violence included being lower income, younger, resident of a rural area, and not completing secondary education. Similarly, those who say it is necessary to physically punish children in the Caribbean - and those who experienced physical punishment frequently themselves - were more prevalent than in Latin American countries. Experiencing frequent physical punishment during childhood was found to be a statistically significant correlate of male tolerance of intimate partner violence after controlling for other individual characteristics. Policy options to prevent intimate partner violence and childhood violence are examined.

This policy brief is based on one of Nordregio’s Localising Agenda 2030 webinars. It highlights specific tools and processes employed by Nordic municipalities and NGOs to ensure systematic youth engagement and follow-up at the local level. During the webinar, municipal representatives from Gladsaxe in Denmark, Hafnarfjörður in Iceland, Tierp in Sweden and Korsholm in Finland presented their tested tools and insights, along with two Swedish NGOs: Future Minds and Youth 2030 Movement. The examples in this policy brief on how to involve young people in local development generally target children and young people aged 0-25, and in some cases up to 29 years of age. Two central questions were addressed during Nordregio's webinar: how to ensure that young people can genuinely influence decisions that affect them; and how to conduct inclusive follow-up work.

Dasí, Virginia Dasí, Emelina López López-González, and Marta Talavera. Defining intimate partner violence: a scoping review protocol. INPLASY - International Platform of Registered Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Protocols, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.37766/inplasy2022.6.0030.

Full text
Abstract:
Review question / Objective: The aim of this scoping review is known what the definition of intimate partner violence is used in the scientific literature. Background: In the scientific literature, intimate partner violence (IPV) has been defined using various terms: aggression, domestic violence, interpersonal violence, intimate partner violence, domestic violence, spousal violence, family violence, etc. (Sprague, 2013; Hamel et al., 2015; O'Hara, 2018, Rahmani et al., 2019). This variety of terminology has hindered a consensus definition, causing a fragmented view of the phenomenon. There are several explanations, one of the main ones being that IPV has been studied by numerous scientific disciplines, each of them associating it with terms specific to its field, focusing on some variables and overshadowing the relevance of others (Nicolás et al. , 2014). Specifically, the term Domestic Violence (DV) and IPV are used interchangeably. However, DV refers to any form of violence perpetrated within a family relationship. It can refer to violence, but also to violence against children or older members of the same family by another family member (Tavoli et al., 2016). It should be noted that the confusion between these terms has been generated since 1993 (Pence & Paymar, 1993) to the present (Bates, 2020).

Using administrative data from the urban Mexican Oportunidades program, this paper analyzes why poor households choose less education for their children, even when offered financial compensation for school attendance. Each school year, half of recipients forgo income for which they are eligible by failing to send children to school. Using a random effects probit and fractional response model, the analysis provides strong evidence that the poorest households, those with more dependents and high school students, recipients with limited education, and those living in large urban areas are less likely to have their children attend school and thus receive partial payments.
