Abstract:
Illustration is folk art through which the illustrator conveys ideas and concepts to the audience. The artist's awareness of different illustration methods leads to better communication with the viewer. In this regard, the views of the audience, the publisher, and the author are influential on the illustrator's choices in the execution of the artwork [1]. Contemporary Iranian illustration arises from the experiences of Iranian illustrators of the past decades, influenced by European methods and combining it with indigenous, traditional, and ethnic characteristics. Despite all the efforts made in recent decades in this regard, preschool and primary children in Iran have received less attention from writers and illustrators than other age groups and have witnessed a lack of attention to picture books. However, the new artistic activities that have been done in this regard with the formation of councils, child support associations, and centers for the intellectual development of children and adolescents cannot be ignored [2].Attracting the audience and conveying the meanings of the text is one of the most important missions of illustrating the book. The artist's responsibility towards the audience, the publisher, the writer, and the type of his attitude shows the high risk of this field. The artist's awareness of the structures in this field leads to better artworks because from each of them, many solutions are obtained for a transcendent performance [1]. Therefore, there are two styles of illustrations as digital and traditional with their specific features. The principal results are the equal quality, importance, and valuation of both digital and traditional styles separately or as mixed styles. Expected contribution leads to researchers who are eager to continue this study in other age groups and aspects of illustration in order to achieve a progressive path through analyzing and searching visual and pictorial elements. This article intends to study the qualities of illustrations in both traditional and digital styles of picture books for preschool and primary children in Iran. Therefore, a number of picture books are selected to examine them through visual analysis.

Abstract:
Moral learning can be taught through stories, which act as orientations and role models to stimulate understanding which then becomes the habituation and personal character of the child. In this study project moral learning is presented in stories in the form of comic books, with Cindelaras's story as example. The comic book creation process goes through several stages of the creative process namely the pre-production process, the production process and the post-production process. The main work produced was a dummy form from a comic book titled "Cindelaras: A Boy with Rooster" and several merchandise works as supporters such as bookmarks, key chains, art prints and stickers. All the sequences pages of this comic are visual illustrations that tell the story of Cindelaras' journey in fighting for justice. In this comic also illustrated how Cindelaras behaves to parents, people who need even those who are evil to him. This comic has the main message that every good or bad deed will return to the culprit. This work is analyzed from the technical aspects, aesthetic aspects and illustrative aspects. Technically, the entire work is done in digital format and techniques with Adobe Photoshop CS5 applications, while viewed from an aesthetic aspect, it highlights visual elements that are depicted such as colors, lines, drawing styles, and so on. The illustrative aspect explains how illustrations play an important role in communicating stories in this comic book. Through this comic book illustration creation it is hoped that it can add to children's reading recommendations as a medium of moral learning as well as a means of promotion to introduce native Indonesian folklore.

Abstract:
Illustrated books have continued to develop by bringing all the changes and developments from year to year, so the trend of illustration books will continue to change. In this article, researchers examine the trend of children's illustrated books in Indonesia with their characteristics published from 2015 to 2021. The method used in this research is the Systematic Literature Review (SLR). The SLR method was used to identify, review, evaluate, and interpret all the latest available research on how children's illustrated book styles were developed. Of the 28 development research articles analyzed, it was found that the font characters for most illustration books use fonts that are easy to read, simple, not stiff, and playful, and each font adjusts its use. The majority of designs use bright, contrasting and striking colours. As many as 21% of children's illustration books use pastel colours. The themes used in the children's illustration books are mostly related to education for children. Most characters in illustration books use cartoon images in the form of human figures. In addition, there are also complementary illustrations to adjust the contents of the existing book. Most of the layouts for children's illustration books use the Picture Window Layout with additional layout emphasis on several sections.

Abstract:
Flertalet föräldrar ville ha möjlighet att berätta egna historier kring illustrationerna i bilderboken.<br>The purpose of this study was the comparison of children 3–6 years old and parents’ preferences of picture book illustrations, as well as to examine how parents reason about the choice of picture book and the illustration’s role in this context. Through individual semi-structured interviews and observations with 22 children (3–6 years) and 10 parents were examined which types of book illustrations that were preferred. The parents then also choose which of five picture books, from which the illustrations were from, they would like to read to their children. The results of the study indicate that the illustrations are an aspect for both children and parents in the selection of picture book and that there are factors that are preferred in the illustrations. The children in the study seemed to prefer naivistic illustrations with a high number of focal points. The parents preferred realistic illustrations with elements they can connect to real life. Parents considered illustrations, moral and knowledge to be of great importance when choosing a picture book for their children. Many parents wanted the opportunity to tell their own story about the illustrations in the picture books.

Muscato, Melinda. "Victorian children's book illustrations." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/898.

Abstract:
In the nineteenth century, as society in Victorian Britain adjusted to the effects of urbanization and industrialization, social roles began to shift, changes that were reflected in the children’s book illustrations of Randolph Caldecott, Henry J. Ford, and Beatrix Potter. This time period was considered the golden age of children’s book illustrations due to a large boom in both number and quality available. These children’s books illustrators had a lasting impact on culture and aesthetics and reinforced the social constructions of the new urban middle class. Randolph Caldecott’s illustrations of nursery rhymes gave new interpretations to familiar texts, some of which furthered shifts in gender roles for both males and females. Andrew Lang’s fairy tale series, illustrated by H. J. Ford, walked a fine line between high art ideals and consumerism. Ford’s illustrations referenced the Pre-Raphaelite aesthetic. The fairytale genre has emphasized female roles from its inception, and Lang's and Ford's focus on an essentially English femininity added complexities to messages about the ideal woman. Beatrix Potter’s subversive work can be seen as the culmination of the Victorian period. She satirized the ideal woman at home, illuminating the anxieties and pressures of the domestic sphere and exploring the Victorians' fixation with the etiquettes of social rank. In an attempt to further the scope of traditional art history, this dissertation shows that, even in consumerist-driven visual culture, even in seemingly inconsequential children’s book illustration, we can see the impact of key social changes and values.

The paper considers ways to combine multimedia technologies with children's book illustration, namely: - animation of illustrations or its parts; - sound effects that are activated when interacting with the illustration; - integration of AR-technologies; - adding mini-games to book applications. It was found that the inclusion of interactive technologies can be used to create new art forms, encourage learning or draw the attention of the readers to existing works of literature through a new, interactive form. It is established that children's illustration under the influence of design trends and mass culture acquires signs of animation, simplified, symbolic forms.

Abstract:
Children's responses to picture books are documented through this qualitative research involving a case study of three students in an intermediate elementary classroom. The study focuses on multiple ways of knowing through examining students' responses to these books through language and art. Specific research questions within this context are: How is the learning environment constructed to support children's responses to picture books? How do children respond to picture books?, What are the children's responses to the illustrations in picture books? and How do children create their own interpretations of the illustrations and written language in picture books? The theoretical frame for this study is based in semiotic theory and transactional theory as well as reader response research, picture books and response, visual literacy, children's responses to art, literary content analysis of picture books, reviews of picture book illustrations, interviews with illustrators, and illustrators reflecting on their artistic processes. The curriculum design developed of this study integrates children's literature and art. The curriculum cycle was an introduction of a picture book or textset, followed by a literature discussion, studio art experiences, and a reflective interview. The infusion of fine arts into the classroom curriculum more closely resembles the multiple ways children approach learning in the world outside school. The combination of written language and illustration in picture books can provide children with an introduction to literature and literacy. In the study, students were encouraged to read a variety of picture books and respond through literature discussion and art experiences. The findings related to the case study of three students were organized within two main areas: meaning making within a picture book and meaning making within the artwork. The picture book was defined as a unique art form that was central to the lives of students as they developed visual literacy. The students' responses were extremely sophisticated and showed that they were capable of complex understandings of art and literature.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the book in the nineteenth century by way of an unusual corpus: movable and novelty books for children, drawn from the Opie Collection of Children’s Literature at the Bodleian Library. It argues that these items, which have been either ignored or actively dismissed by scholars of children’s literature, are of two-fold significance for the history of the book: they encourage a sense of the book as a constitutively (rather than an incidentally) material object, and they demand an understanding of reading as not just a mental activity, but a physical one as well. Each of the first five chapters of the thesis centres on a different format. The opening chapter discusses the Regency-era paper doll books produced by Samuel and Joseph Fuller, exposing the tension between form and content in these works. The second chapter looks at Victorian panorama books for children, showing how the panorama format affects space, time, and the structure of any text accompanying the image. The third chapter reads the pop-up book’s key tension—the tension between surface and depth in the pursuit of an illusion of three dimensions—in terms of flat, theatrical, and stereoscopic picture-making, three other nineteenth-century pictorial modes in which an illusion of three-dimensionality is important. The fourth chapter traces self-reflexive accounts of printing, publishing, and the material book in dissolving-view books produced by the German publisher and printer Ernest Nister at the end of the nineteenth century. The fifth chapter positions the late nineteenth-century mechanical books designed and illustrated by Lothar Meggendorfer in terms of two material analogies, the puppet and the mechanical toy or automaton. The final chapter synthesizes evidence as to how the movable book could and should be read from across formats, foregrounding in particular the ways in which the movable embodies reading.

Abstract:
This chapter presents a historic review of the use of photomontage and photo-based collage in Polish books for children (fiction and poetry) in the 20th century. The earliest example dates from 1934, whereas the latest one is dated 1981. The chapter begins with an outline of the artistic background in the period 1918–1939, it gives a short typology of photo-based illustrations, and then analyses the only known examples of genuine photomontage created for children’s books before World War II, namely works by Aleksander Krzywobłocki and Jerzy Janisch in Kometa Halley’a (Halley’s Comet) by Alina Lan, and a sample of works by Franciszka and Stefan Themerson. The chapter continues through the period of the so-called Polish School of Illustration (1950s–1970s), paying special attention to Adam Kilian and Stanisław Zamecznik’s illustrations, and ends with a presentation of the extensive and varied use of photography in illustrations by Bohdan Butenko, one of Poland’s most prominent illustrators.

Bruno Munari was an Italian artist, graphic designer, and illustrator who combined art and design to great effect in his visual art and books. During his long, interdisciplinary career, Munari experimented with many artistic possibilities: painting, illustration, sculpture, design, graphics, teaching, poetry, and writing. He also cultivated a peculiar relationship with photography. This chapter investigates photography’s influence on Munari’s poetics, from Futurism and other Avant-garde movements to the Bauhaus and László Moholy-Nagy’s work, graphic design experimentation, and collaborations with photographers. His multifaceted approach can be investigated through two editorial project typologies: photocollage and photographic picturebooks. What is discussed is how historic, artistic, and cultural photography influenced his children’s works and to what extent photographic experimentation affected Munari’s creativity and aesthetics in his original books.

Abstract:
The printer and bookseller John Evans was, in the last decade of the eighteenth century, seemingly prolonging the lifespan of the type of publication that had hitherto typified the Aldermary Churchyard press and which it was abandoning in search of ‘respectability’. The place of business Evans established for his work, and which was retained by his family for a further forty-five years, was originally John Marshall’s, and what seems to have been his ‘big break’ came courtesy of Marshall when he fell out of favour with the patrons of the Cheap Repository Tracts. Nevertheless, Evans had a distinct career. Stretching into the 1800s, he was arguably the last printer of the traditional ‘penny history’ in the capital, a text and illustrative tradition that dated back at least to the printers and publishers of the mid-seventeenth century; he was a major link in the production of broadside ballads and slip songs between Marshall and the later printers Pitts and Catnach; and, as this chapter will show, he was a significant and heretofore underappreciated printer of street literature specifically for children.

Abstract:
In the framework of the LTA project, focusing on leisure reading for children with visual impairment, we present a prototype of multisensory illustration that will be used as a model for future accessible tactile interactive books. This multisensory illustration is based on two approaches to illustrate the storytelling. The first approach consists in embodying the character’s legs with the index and middle fingers in order for the user to imitate actions such as walking. The second approach is to offer interactions feedback according to the readers actions. The main goal of this multisensory illustration prototype is to test and evaluate a selection of interactions and their associated sensors. These interactions help visually impaired readers to identify the environment of the story. They also help to understand actions behind the verbs. Readers are engaged to produce actions such as touching and imitating with their fingers. These interactions are developed according to hypotheses based on the literature. This multisensory illustration prototype was tested with a panel of children. The results comfort the idea that these interactions are useful for them.

Abstract:
Visual culture is an integral part of modern life. Books with the engaging visual design still attract children’s attention and are at the center of examples of their experiences and interactions. In children’s books, the image is the central part of perception and the accompanying text plays a secondary role. Visual perception influences and shapes children’s views about what the world around them is like. The book’s illustrations are often the primary criteria when choosing a book for a child, which also creates interest in the written content. By analyzing different illustrations, it is possible to distinguish several main features that are characteristic of depicting a certain emotion and how the characters feel. When looking at any illustration, the character’s facial expression is one of the primary objects looked at to determine how the character is feeling. Appropriate body posture creates the effect of movement alone or helps create the mood of an illustration by complementing the emotional background provided by facial expressions. A true representation of emotions in an illustration not only creates an enjoyable overall image but also clearly shows children how each emotion manifests itself and helps them understand themselves and in the people around them. The aim of the research is to investigate the role of children’s books in their psycho-emotional development and the techniques of depicting emotions in book illustrations. Research methods: theorethical – research of literature and Internet resources; case study. Research results – the importance of children’s book illustrations in children’s psycho-emotional development is substantiated, and the types of representation of various emotional expressions are determined. The case study confirms that not in all cases artists have paid attention to facial mimicry, which is the most active part of a person for the expression of emotions.

Abstract:
“Kacha Kacha Simona” was a pioneering chapter book series of Sinhala literature, categorized under chapter books the children story genre, authored and published from the year 2017 by the Sri Lankan writer I.M. Uthpala Madhuwanthi alias ‘Sandha Uthpalawee’. At present, “Kacha Kacha Simona” book series which is also considered a significant milestone of the author’s writing career has evolved into a trilogy targeting not only readers aged 7 to 11, but also beyond. The book series “Kacha Kacha Simona”, accompanied with delightful illustrations, captures the essence of the author’s childhood experiences. The series revolves around the protagonist, a talkative, playful, yet innocent girl with a strong determination for her studies. The books showcase Simona’s family, pets, hobbies, and her profound appreciation for the little joys of life. Also the storyline revolves around Simona’s journey as she prepares for and faces the grade five scholarship examination, a significant challenge that alters the course of her life. The first book in the series, “Kacha Kacha Simona” was an island-wide success, not only among children but also with adults. The author’s personal handling of story development, illustrations, book layout, cover design, publishing, distribution, sales and marketing showcased her multifaceted talent. Bidegain, Eneko. "Laxalt Family’s Basque American Correspondence After Sweet Promised Land." In XII Congress of the ICLA. Georgian Comparative Literature Association, 2024. https://doi.org/10.62119/icla.2.8456.

Full text
Abstract:
Dominique Laxalt is a Basque who became famous following the novel Sweet Promised Land written by his son Robert Laxalt in 1957. The novel relates the harsh adaptation to the life of a shepherd in the American West and the impossible definitive return to the native land, after decades of emigration and the journey made with his son Robert in the Basque Country (Ezkerra and Olaziregi, 2009; Laraway, 2019). As a result, the novel is an illustration of the altered identity of Basque Americans (Totoricaguena, 2014; Douglass, 2005; Decroos,1983). We have examined the very rich correspondence of the Laxalt family where we can see a double alterity of identity, apart from that of Dominique Laxalt himself. It concerns, on the one hand, that of Dominique’s American children, concerning their interest in the Basque language and the Basque Country (notably Robert’s, long before his novel) and, on the other hand, the fascination of the Basque Country’s relatives for the American life of the Laxalt family (and the success of Paul Laxalt in politics). But these letters also bear witness to the changes in society and the economy of the Soule of the 1960s. The dozens of letters sent by Dominique Laxalt’s children and sisters, nieces and nephews are, in a way, a continuation of the novel Sweet Promised Land, since they allow us to know the family events after the novel. But, above all, the letters show that the journey recounted in the book is a catalyst for the close ties between the Basque and American Laxalt families.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted family lifestyles, children's capabilities, and parent-child interactions. This study aimed to explore the influences of parent-child interactions with toys and playing time on children’s problem-solving abilities in post-COVID-19. The research process included two phases: (1) Literature Review: The relationship among playtime, toy types, and children’s capability to solve problems.; and (2) Questionnaire Analyses. The questionnaire focuses on the influences of different types of parent-child toys and the time of playing together for age 2-6 kids on problem-solving skills. Choosing 32 questions from Social Problem-Solving Questionnaire (SPSQ) and Problem-Solving Style Questionnaire (PSSQ), preschool education specialists designed this questionnaire. Questionnaires were distributed in December 2023, and 30 of them were collected. The results are as follows. (1) Learning toys with numbers and symbols that aid in reading can help develop children’s logical thinking, thereby enhancing problem-solving skills. When parents and children engage in studying picture or illustration books together, it nurtures children's language capabilities and fosters interest in learning. Furthermore, sensory-motor playthings have a significant impact on the language development of children.; and (2) Children from families with accompanying playtime during 17:00-18:00 (before school time) or 21:00-22:00 (before/during bedtime) showed good analytical problem-solving capabilities. When faced with a complex problem, these children could identify the most crucial factor and, if they encountered a bottleneck, they would review the problem's context and related conditions to devise alternative solutions.
