In the episode ‘The Grove’ (4.14) from AMC's The Walking Dead, Lizzie and Mika Samuels, sisters and two of the child survivors of the zombie apocalypse, brutally meet their ends. Lizzie, no longer able to distinguish between life and death, kills Mika, and Carol in turn shoots Lizzie, claiming that Lizzie ‘can't be around people’. These characters call into question the dividing line – if one remains, as established society crumbles – between human and animal, feral and civilised. The purpose of this thesis is to attempt to prove that the way Wang Anyi approaches sexual love and the insights she finds in the topic in her novella "Love in a Small Town" are unique in the history of Chinese literature. Chapter One seeks to show that the novella is an extended exploration of raw sexual desire and its consequences in the life of two people with very little education and culture. Thus, sex and its related mysteries have become the sole object of Wang's intellectual exploration in "Love in a Small Town". To provide a historic background for Wang's literary exploration, Chapt

The philosophical perspectives that guided the study were: the Navajo philosophy, or view of life; resilience (middle range theory); the Family Stress Theory; and the Resiliency Mode of Family Stress, Adjustment, and Adaptation. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) refers to a spectrum of effects resulting from prenatal exposure to alcohol (PEA). Attention problems are considered common among children with PEA. In this study, a specific aspect of visual attending, filtering, was examined among children with FASD with both an experimental flanker task and clinical subtests. On the flanker task, the participants responded to centrally presented arrows while ignoring distracter arrows that sometimes appeared to the left and right of the target. These distracters were either congruent or incongruent with the target.

Stools were analyzed for common enteric pathogens, and diarrheagenic E. coli isolates were studied by a multiplex real-time PCR. The parietal lobe has been shown to be one of the regions most affected by prenatal alcohol exposure. Functional domains dependent on intact parietal functioning, including mathematical and visuospatial ability, have been consistently implicated in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. This thesis examines, in children, using blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, the effect of prenatal alcohol exposure on brain activation during symbolic and nonsymbolic number processing, and place learning in a virtual environment. Background: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), which are caused by prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE), affects people around the world. Certain communities in South Africa have among the highest reported incidences of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) in the world. Although PAE-related brain alterations have been widely documented, the mechanisms whereby alcohol affects the brain are not clearly understood. MRI relaxation parameters T1, T2, T2* and proton density (PD), are basic tissue properties that reflect the underlying biology. The present study aims to advance our understanding of how PAE

Occupational therapists are concerned with individuals´ abilities to engage in daily occupations. When a daily activity such as bowel management is problematic, participation in key occupations can be limited. Retentive fecal incontinence is a common disorder in children. Behavior seems to be partly responsible for this condition. Occupational therapists have hypothesized that some behaviors could be related to sensory over-responsivity. This study investigated the relationship between retentive fecal incontinence and sensory over-responsivity and examined the Toileting Habit Profile Questionn
