Abstract:
AbstractThe appearance, the differential diagnosis and the prevalence of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents is discussed. Among adolescents bipolar disorder appears to have a similar prevalence in the US and The Netherlands. However, among children it is frequently diagnosed in the US and hardly in The Netherlands. It is concluded that bipolar disorder tends to start earlier in the US than in the Netherlands. It is hypothesized that this may be related to a higher use of stimulants and antidepressants by US children diagnosed as ADHD or depression, respectively.

Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic has had a large impact on regular healthcare provision in the Netherlands. During the first wave, healthcare in children was strongly reduced due to safety regulations and reduced hospital capacity for non-COVID care. This, and fear of COVID-19 could have led to delayed inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) healthcare, and delayed or even missed diagnoses. This has already been demonstrated in adult IBD patients in the Netherlands1, but not yet in the paediatric population. This is of importance, as in children, diagnostic delay is associated with higher ra

Schools for the deaf in the Netherlands are currently looking for ways of converting their current education into bilingual education. The first language of prelingual deaf children in the Netherlands is Sign Language of the Netherlands (SLN); their second language is Dutch. In the first part of the thesis, the bilingual situation of prelingual deaf children is examined with the help of a theoretical framework designed by J. Cummins and a model designed by J. Kurvers. Cummins' theoretical framework takes a thorough look at language development in different bilingual situations. Kurvers' model

Evaluation of the effect of mother tongue teaching to migrant children in the Netherlands. Data are presented on first- and second-language proficiency of the Turkish sample (n=368). In the context of the conference on cross-national comparisons of child health, a short overview is given of youth health care in the Netherlands. After a brief explanation of the financing of the Dutch health care system, trends in child mortality are shown. A short description is presented of obstetrical care, which features independent midwives and 35% home deliveries; the organization of well baby clinics, which provide for 10 visits in the first 15 months and care for 95% of all children; and the school health services, which cover nearly all children.

BEFORE GOING INTO THE SPECIFIC AREAS OF PEDIATRIC cardiology and pediatric cardiac cardiology and pediatric cardiac surgery, an overview of the general health care organization in the Netherlands might be helpful. The Netherlands, a country with about 15 million inhabitants, spent 47 billion Dutch guilders (US$22 billion) for general health care in 1991. This is about 8.5% of the gross domestic product. Of this, 61% was spent on in-hospital costs, 39% on extramural costs, including the financing of organizations that deal with preventive (primary) medicine, such as clinics for infants and scho
