Abstract:
Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common cause of childhood disability. Children with CP have a number of problems, resulting in frequent need for surgery and anesthesia. They present a series of added challenges to the anesthetist that may have an impact on perioperative anesthesia and pain management. Theses include spasticity and other movement disorders, cognitive impairment, seizure management, behavioral disturbances, malnutrition, and difficulties in communication and swallowing. An understanding of these issues will help the anesthetist formulate a management plan that is tailored to the individual child's needs.
