Abstract:
Due to the strong economic position of Chile within Latin America and the existing deficit of research, this chapter focuses on Emerging Market Multinational Enterprises (EMNEs) from Chile. It draws upon institutional theory to analyze case studies on the internationalization process of 19 Chilean firms with outward Foreign Direct Investments (FDI). The authors find that market-seeking FDI is the major motivation for investing abroad. With respect to the geographical scope of outward FDI, the authors investigate that Latin America is the dominating destination for outward FDI by Chilean firms. Moreover, the results show that acquisitions and joint ventures are popular when investing in developed economies, whereas both greenfield investments and acquisitions are chosen most often when entering other emerging economies. Finally, the authors observe that Chilean firms internationalize rather late in their life cycle (i.e., they need a long time span between foundation and the first outward FDI). However, the authors do not find support for the proposition that Chilean firms enter a second or third foreign market faster when the cultural distance of the market is low.

Abstract:
Due to the importance that the Internet has gained as a means of communication, literature on political communication has incorporated it as one of its preferred topics of focus. Literature stems almost entirely from Europe and the United States. Very little is known about the political use of new information and communication technologies (NICTs) in other parts of the world. The present chapter aims to provide evidence in that line, starting from the study of the incorporation of the Chilean political parties to the Internet. In specific, the following questions are answered: In what extent do factors such as the organizational characteristics of the political parties explain their greater or lesser adoption of NICTs? What do parties use NICTs for? Furthermore, although briefly, the authors will try to answer the question whether the parties have experienced change in their interaction with the citizenry and their bases because of the usage of NICTs.

Abstract:
By examining how contemporary Spanish and Chilean women writers represent dictatorial pasts and the experience of inner exile, this essay sheds light on the link between political and gendered violence underpinning the Franco dictatorship in Spain (1939-1975) and Pinochet dictatorship in Chile (1973-1989). Without collapsing difference, we address political systems and artistic movements within a wider cultural, political and historical framework. Through a close reading of El lector de Julio Verne by Spanish novelist Almudena Grandes and Óxido de Carmen by Chilean author Ana María del Río, we gain a platform to ask questions that move beyond a monocultural or national standpoint and to explore how authors have responded to similar struggles. A transatlantic comparative study of these texts not only helps us to understand how the regimes’ violence was shaped by related ideologies, but also how literature might intervene, expose and subvert such violence through the reconstruction of silenced memories of resistance.

Abstract:
Authors analyze the current situation of competitiveness in the region and in selected countries, using available data. They diagnose the level of informal economy in the region. The chapter articulates how informality affects the competitive capability of a country. Recommendations are made on how to tackle informality, based on the current literature on the topic, previous experiences from other countries, and the authors' analysis. This chapter considers the importance of Colombia, Peru, and Mexico to Latin America in terms of economic size, population, and territory. Besides, these countries, along with Chile, form the Alianza del Pacifico (Pacific Alliance), a group of countries that constitutes a basic form of economic integration. Chile is excluded from this chapter since it shows significantly lower levels of informality than the other three alliance members.

Deaf education in Chile has made important progress during the past 30 years, particularly during the past decade. However, many of these achievements have brought new problems and challenges. This chapter gives an overview of the paths followed by educational policy, school practices, and research in deaf education. The authors’ review of official documents and published research was enriched by the voices of eight key informants connected to deaf education. From the analysis of all the material gathered, they identified several important issues, such as the tension between policies that promote the education of deaf students in regular schools and those that acknowledge the importance of sign language in deaf education. They also included some proposals for further research and for moving forward in educational policy and practices, with a focus on the important role deaf adults can play in these processes.

Despite some signs of increasing complexity, the authors conclude that maritime societies of this region remained relatively egalitarian up to the Spanish Conquest. Abstract:
Semiarid ecosystems of Chile with Mediterranean climate support high demographic rates and maintain important economies associated with the productivity of the natural environment; however, they strongly depend on the water availability and their future is compromised by climate variations. This study tries to define the role of hydrological variables on the growth of herbaceous biomass under the current climate and under future weather variations. For this, the authors used meteorological stations which let them estimate the water balance at plot scale and spectral reflectance sensors which let them follow the dynamics of the NDVI of herbaceous plants. In this context, the NDVI value was about 0.7, which means approximately 3700 kg DM ha1. However, under the worst-case climate change scenarios (RCP 8.5), annual precipitation showed a reduction of up to 31.6% regarding the present period. In this situation, the NDVI could be reduced up to 80% respect to the current situation. Thus, if climate changes to its worst scenario, it could threaten the maintenance and productivity of these ecosystems.

Abstract:
The main characteristic of pension systems is financial stability. The authors will present some models of the pension system, economics models such as the theory of income uncertainty, overlapping generations' model. The authors will present the interrelation of employment, population, and circular economy, trying to improve the existing pension system in Serbia. The circular economy is a response to the growing needs of humanity. It is referred to as sustainable development in all the spheres of human life. The circular economies can also refer to the sustainability of the pension system, which is linked to the quality of life. The quality of life is part of sustainable development as its social component. The chapter provides an overview of the sustainability of the pension system by reducing the costs with employment increasing. As an example of good practice, the authors present Australia and Chile in a small analysis that indicates pension fund sustainability. This practice can serve as an example of the improvement of the pension system in Serbia and similar smaller countries.

Child poisoning has been dramatically reduced by the introduction of child resistant (CR) closures on some common home chemicals and pharmaceuticals. However, “child resistance” (often mischaracterized as “child proof”) is a mechanical design property that is neither well understood nor supported by a body of theory, nor that can be specified from engineering first principles. Instead, child resistance is an empirically developed and verified closure mechanical property derived from closure testing with child subjects, as specified by regulations under the Poison Prevention Packing Act (PPPA).
