Abstract:
AbstractThe American members of the tribe Aterpini are restricted to the Central Chilean and Subantarctic biogeographic subregions of southern South America. They include the genera Alastoropolus Kuschel, with one species (A. strumosus), and Aegorhinus Erichson ( = Micropolus Kuschel, syn. n.), with 22 species. A cladistic analysis using 44 characters from external morphology produced 14 cladograms (CI = 0.39, RI = 0.62, and 177 steps, which after successive weighting were reduced to two cladograms (CI = 0.63, RI = 0.84, and 326 steps). Alastoropolus is the sister genus to Aegorhinus, whose sp

The Andean subregion corresponds to south-western South America below 30˚S latitude, extending through the Andean highlands north of this latitude, and comprises five provinces: Subantarctic, Central Chilean, Patagonian, Puna and Paramo. Based on a track analysis of the Andean biota, three main types of distributions were found: (1) no relationship of the Andean subregion with other areas (Andean endemic distributions); (2) relationships with one area or subregion, namely (a) Austral, (b) Tropical and (c) Amphitropical distributions; and (3) relationships with more than one subregion (cosmopol

Cyrnellus is a small genus of Polycentropodidae distributed in the Nearctic and Neotropical regions, absent from the Chilean subregion. Two new species are here described: C. boliviensis sp. nov. and C. guyanensis sp. nov. Cyrnellus minimus Banks 1913 considered as a junior synonym of Cyrnellus fraternus (Banks 1905) by Flint (1971) and C. marginalis (Banks 1930) considered as a junior synonym of Cyrnellus fraternus by Flint (1964) are revalidated at the specific level. We provide a key and illustrations for adult males and nine new country records for Bolivia.

The Smicridea (Smicridea) fasciatella species group occurs from the southwestern USA, throughout Central America, the Greater Antilles islands, and most of South America, except for the Chilean subregion. It is characterized by the phallic apparatus being a simple tube with eversible internal sclerites at the apex. The fasciatella group is composed of 61 species, of which only 11 occur in Brazil, mainly in the Atlantic Forest biome in the southeastern region. In order to reduce the Linnean and Wallacean shortfalls for the Smicridea Brazilian fauna, we diagnose, describe, and illustrate males o

Abstract:
In the semi-arid and arid regions of the Chilean Andes, meltwater from the cryosphere is a key resource for the local economy and population. In this setting, climate change and economic activities foster water scarcity and resource conflicts. The study presents a detailed glacier and rock glacier inventory for the Huasco valley (28–29° S) in northern Chile based on a multi-temporal remote sensing approach. The results indicate a glacier-covered area of 16.35 ± 3.06 km2 (n = 167) and, additionally, 50 rock glaciers covering an area of about 8.6 km2 in 2016. About 81% of the ice-bodies are smal
