Abstract:
The market life of many fruits and vegetables can be extended through storage at low temperatures. Chilling injury (CI) is a major postharvest storage problem for tropical commodities. Storing these products at temperatures below their critical temperature may result in severe physiological disorders known as CI symptoms. Mangoes (Mangifera indica. L) are susceptible to CI when stored below 12 °C. Visual CI symptoms include uneven ripening, surface pitting, discoloration, shriveling and scalding. Black-DiamondR wax-apple suffered chilling injury while it was stored at 1℃ for two days. Symptoms of injury were first appeared as small pitting on the pericarp, then developed into large sunken areas and became discolored as the day of storage increased. Sinking of the skin happened earlier than the development of discoloration. The respiration rate of wax-applestored at 1 and 15℃ was low than of at 25℃. But showed

Since Taiwan is an epidemic area of oriental fruit fly, quarantine treatment is required for exporting mango fruit to markets absent from this insect. However, there are some drawbacks of vapor heat treatment, the current quarantine treatment for mango in Taiwan, such as high treatment fee, facility availability limitation, and heat damage risk. The fact that the chilling tolerance of ripe ‘Irwin’ mango fruit is better than mature-green counterpart has made cold quarantine tre

Expansion of the industry implies an increased demand for irrigation water. However, South Africa is a water scarce country characterised by low and erratic rainfall, where fruit production relies heavily on irrigation. The agricultural sector is under an obligation to reduce water use due to the increasing demand for water by other economic sectors. Therefore, it must find effici

New emerging markets such as Japan and the United States require cold sterilisation of South African citrus fruit as a phytosanitary standard against fruit fly. However, citrus fruit are chilling susceptible, with lemons being the second-most chilling susceptible after grapefruit. Chilling injury is a physiological rind disorder; the occurrence of which is despite its prevalence in horticultural commodities, not well understood. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate physiological compounds regulating chilling susceptibility or resistance in citrus fruit, with special emphasis on

In order to expand the overseas market, both quarantine treatment (14 days at 0℃) and long-term transportation have been associated with low temperature storage for guava fruits. However, since guava fruit is a chilling-sensitive produce, low temperature storage often causes chilling injury (CI) symptoms, such as browning and pitting, on guava fruits, reducing the quality and marketability. To reduce the development of CI symptoms, methyl jasmonate (MeJA) has been utilized in

However, the selection is highly susceptible to chilling injury, which normally reduces post-storage quality and marketability of citrus fruit.
