MANLEY, VICTOR EUGENE. "A CONSERVATIVE REFORMER IN T'ANG CHINA: THE LIFE AND THOUGHT OF HAN YU (768-824) (BIOGRAPHY, CONFUCIANISM)." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/183823.

Full text
Abstract:
Han Yu is famous in Chinese history both for his literature and for his defense of Confucianism at a time when it was being seriously challenged by Buddhism and religious Taoism. Although his influ- ence was limited during his own lifetime, in later times Han Yu came to symbolize the conservative Confucian values that are often identi- fied with the traditional Chinese state. This study examines Han Yu's life and thought in an attempt to determine to what extent his later image as an ideal Confucian was or was not justified. A chapter on the historical background provides the context for Han Yu's biography, which is divided into five chap- ters. This is followed by a chapter discussing the intellectual back- ground of Han Yu's thought. Two further chapters discuss, first, the basis of Han Yu's conservative image, and, second, a number of his writings which illustrate the limits of his conservatism. Han Yu's ideas are related to the political and social circumstan- ces of his times, and it is found that while he is indeed a conservative and a Confucian, the extent of both his conservatism and his Confucian orthodoxy have been exaggerated.

Cao, Qin. "Roles of weapons : significance, identity and value in Anyang late Shang (c. 1200-1050 B.C.) society China." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2016. https://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:e9a70177-8acb-4745-a94b-ddefa08dab98.

Full text
Abstract:
Weapons of the late Shang (c.1200-1050 B.C.), characterised by their frequent discovery and various forms and materials, have often been dogmatically deciphered as either symbolic signifiers or representing military equipment. Adopting an object biographical approach, the main objective of this thesis is to employ the corpus of weapons to explore the martial facet of Shang society. Multiple strands of evidence have been compiled for the investigation: two datasets composed of over 200 complete tombs with their assemblages from the Anyang site of the late Shang, finds from non-burial contexts, the British Museum bronze weaponry collection, and contemporaneous texts. Using for the first time both statistical tools and metalwork wear analysis, this thesis challenges our understanding of the weapons of the Shang from their classification in archaeological reports to their functions and roles in society. The diverse types and materials of weapons and their multifaceted functions also shed light on interactions between objects and human beings.

Abstract:
Contrary to the significance that HSBC and its comprador office made on the modernisation in China at the turn of the 19th and the 20th Century, studies about the Bank’s expansion in the Beijing-Tianjin area were exceptionally limited. In this research, the importance of HSBC’s expansion to North China in the 1880s will be primarily examined by the Bank and its comprador office’s roles in the railways development in North China. During this process, Wu Jim-pah, as the first comprador of HSBC in Tianjin, offered significant aids in establishing HSBC’s collaboration with the Qing Court and the influential Bei-yang Ministry under Li Hong-zhang’s administration. This research is going to examine Wu Jim-pah’s career and personal development in late Qing Huizhou, Suzhou, Shanghai, Tianjin and Beijing, so as to answer a series of questions related to China’s social-economic reforms and its earliest capitalists’ formation at the turn of the centuries. Moreover, acts as the first academic study focusing on Wu Jim-pah’s participation in the early modernisation projects of late Qing China, this research put the collection and classification of historical materials in the central place. The findings of primary resources from the archives in China and overseas, namely, the Institute of History and Philology of Academia Sinica in Taipei, the National Library of China, the Shanghai Library, the Southwest Jiao-tong University, the Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences (TASS), the HSBC Group Archives, London School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), as well as the Public Record Office at Kew, London, could be regarded as the most valuable part of this research.
published_or_final_version
Humanities and Social Sciences
Doctoral
Doctor of Philosophy

Lee, Sheng-kuang. "Commoner and sagehood: Wang Ken and the T'ai-chou School in late Ming society." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185106.

Full text
Abstract:
The intellectual world of the late Ming literati was without question one of great richness and complexity. The focus of the present study, however, is limited to an examination of Wang Ken, the man, his key philosophical beliefs, and his role in the founding of the T'ai-chou School of thought. In exploring the genesis of Wang Ken and his school of thought, certain aspects of the social milieu are examined in order to reach a better understanding of how the larger environment and this radical intellectual movement became intertwined. In other words, I have attempted to discern and define the interplay of the most important creative minds of the time, and particularly those of the elite class with this group. As a teacher and thinker Wang Ken exercised a considerable influence on his times, contributing in the process to the new permissiveness so characteristic of the latter half of the Ming dynasty. In this regard, the present study also represents an attempt to discover the basic patterns underlying Wang Ken's thought, as well as the T'ai-chou School's responsiveness to dramatic changes in society. In doing so, we perceive an implication of intellectual autonomy in the form of social and political protest against imperial autocracy. Also, the spread of his faith in an attainable and intelligible sagehood among the lower classes, gradually blurred the dividing line between elite and commoner. Finally, the assertions of Wang Ken and the T'ai-chou School indeed stimulated a new sense of self-awareness and self-worth. Nevertheless, it is because of its radical rejection of the established social, political, and intellectual order that the T'ai-chou School has been branded as heterodox. As a result, the frustration of its aspiration for a more genuine humanity was inevitable, as this intellectual movement fell victim to the forces of orthodoxy and conformity.

Ho, Koon-wan. "Politics and factionalism: K'ou Chun (962-1023) and his 't'ung-nien'." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185175.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is on K'ou Chun, the early Northern Sung statesman who made his name in Chinese history by the conclusion of the Treaty of Shan-yuan in 1005 with the Northern Empire of the Liao, which brought about the peace between the two countries for more than a century. Apart from discussing K'ou Chun's role in the 1004 crisis, this study attempts to view Sung bureaucratic factionalism from a new perspective through examining the activities of K'ou Chun and his t'ung-nien, candidates who obtained their chin-shih degrees in the same year. It is found that the chin-shih of the 980 examination including K'ou Chun and Wang Tan (957-1017) gradually built up a powerful faction through their t'ung-nien relationship. This faction dominated the Sung court for more than thirty years since the middle of Emperor T'ai-tsung's reign (r. 976-997). Their chief rival factions, interestingly, also came from two other t'ung-nien groups headed by Chang Ch'i-hsien (943-1014) and Wang Chin-jo (962-1025), respectively. Historically, bureaucratic factionalism always intertwined with court politics. It was no exception for early Northern Sung. Since K'ou Chun and his faction were deeply involved in the succession questions of Emperor T'ai-tsung and Chen-tsung (r. 997-1022), this study also focuses on the power struggle that took place in the inner court. K'ou Chun ultimately lost in the power struggle and died in banishment. However, his faction still managed to keep its influence during Empress Dowager Liu's (r. 1023-1033) regency when its junior members, headed by Wang Tseng (978-1038) and Lu I-chien (978-1043) gradually came to power. K'ou Chun and his faction were traditionally praised as "gentlemen", while their rivals were mostly condemned as "petty men". Such a view will be examined through the study of their behaviors. And K'ou's historical image will be explored through different perspectives as well.

Bailey, Cameron. "A feast for scholars : the life and works of Sle lung Bzhad pa'i rdo rje." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2017. https://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:c8de47c2-98b2-4b3c-8bcb-3e93ca668722.

Full text
Abstract:
Bzhad pa'i rdo rje (1697-1740), the Fifth Sle lung Rin po che, was a religiously and politically controversial figure and an incredibly prolific author, having written or compiled over 46 volumes worth of mainly religious texts. A high-ranking Dge lugs pa sprul sku, Sle lung is seen as having gradually "defected" to the Rnying ma school, although he self-identified as a follower of the "non-sectarian" (ris med) perspective. Sle lung also acted as a spiritual advisor to most of the major central Tibetan rulers during the course of his life, most significantly Mi dbang Pho lha nas (r. 1729-1747). But despite numerous features of fascinating interest, Sle lung and his writings have received very little scholarly attention, and this thesis is intended to fill this unfortunate lacuna. The present study begins with an extended biographical examination of Sle lung's life, and the political and religious unrest in central Tibet at the time in which he was deeply invested. I pay special attention to the controversies that surrounded him, particularly his purported sexual licentiousness and his ecumenical work which was unpopular among his more sectarian Dge lugs pa critics. This opening biography provides critical historical context as I move on to examine two of Sle lung's most important literary works. The first is the sixteen-volume Gsang ba ye shes chos skor, a massive cycle of teachings by Sle lung and his students that integrates tantric theories derived from Sle lung's experience with Gsar ma (specifically Dge lugs pa) teachings. The second work is the Bstan srung rgya mtsho'i rnam thar, a unique text in Tibetan literature which consists of an apparently unprecedented compilation of Tibetan Buddhist protector deity (bstan srung, chos skyong) origin myths. I will make sense of key features of these two works within the larger context of Indo-Tibetan Buddhism, as well as the political and personal concerns of Sle lung himself.

Donnelly, Lisa Chere'. "Shaping the Future Past: Finding History, Creating Identity in the Kwan Hsu Papers." PDXScholar, 2012. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/481.

Full text
Abstract:
Dr. Kwan Hsu was neither a superstar nor a celebrity. Her name does not come up in conversations about important contributors to her field of biophysics nor is she instantly recognizable for her contributions to Portland State University's international program or the state of Oregon's business ties with China. Yet she was a contributor, a cog-in-the-wheel, at the very least, in all of these areas and more. She was a peripheral member of a well-known Chinese family, but few in the United States know of or perhaps have interest in, but otherwise, she had no great connections or family ties to generate interest in her story. How does one process a collection for a woman who does not meet the traditional criteria for excellence or success or public interest for an archive? Where is the value to the larger historical narrative of our time in preserving the memories of someone who was non-remarkable, or, conversely, someone who may be even too unique to contribute to that greater narrative? These are the questions I wrestled with when I first came to this collection. As my research progressed, I realized that I faced more questions, and that to come to any understanding that might answer them, I was going to have to research the history of archives and archival processes. Science, the Cold War, Communist China, women, the immigrant experience, all of these issues became part of my thesis, however shallowly I was able to investigate them. Questions of identity and historiography, of power and discourse were explored. In the end, what I found was that a collection that on the outside looked unimpressive and unenlightening, could indeed be very valuable, and provide insight into any number of areas of current interest in historical research. This is that story.

Maraun, Timothy Fritz. "Tension in 18th century Chinese painting." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/31841.

Full text
Abstract:
In Western scholarship, eighteenth century Chinese paintings have consistently been seen as playful, eccentric, and odd. This characterization has been based on the formal qualities of some of the paintings. At the same time, Chinese scholars have written of the scholarly virtues and ambitions of the painters producing the works. The contradiction between these two interpretations is in part consistent with the Western and Chinese approaches generally. But it also stems from the mixed signals and information generated in the eighteenth century. The nature of painting, not just formally, but socially has yet to be explained in a way which takes into account some actual historical contradictions of the eighteenth century. In order to explain these historical tensions, I combine a biographical (Chinese) approach with a contextual approach (Western) in a study of two different scholar painters, Zheng Xie and Li Shan. I juxtapose biographical sources with artworks, and less official writings relating Zheng Xie and Li Shan, in order to describe the tensions involved in painting for the literatus within the merchant culture of Yangzhou. These tensions existed between the literatus' expected status and that granted him, between his ideal of the role of painting in the scholar's life and the implications of commercial painting, and between his emphasis upon poetry and his popularity as a painter. In all cases, the tensions in eighteenth century literati painting arise from the difficult relationship between the painter and patron, and between the painter and the ideas of a broader public. The lack of a clear definition of "scholar" and "scholar painting" amongst literati illustrates the literatus' loss of control over the definition of his lifestyle.
Arts, Faculty of
Art History, Visual Art and Theory, Department of
Graduate

Abstract:
Historiography has always been a major discipline in Imperial China, producing among other works the encyclopedic corpus known as the Twenty-Six Standard Histories. This dissertation aims at examining the place dedicated to medicine and physicians in this corpus. Written following a very specific modus operandi, the Standard Histories provide the readers numerous biographies of experts in medicine (yi 醫). As we know today, these texts were more prescriptive than descriptive, and one should not base any serious historical study of medicine on these sources alone. The question then is how to make the most out of the large amount of information they bring to scholarly attention. To answer this question, I first propose a synthetic overview of historical writings in China, of the textual genres to which they belong, with a special focus on the biographical genre, and then undertake a statistic and analytic study of the place dedicated to medicine in Chinese historical records. The second part of the dissertation deals more specifically with the one hundred and forty-two biographies of physicians contained in the Standard Histories: after having identified, classified and analyzed all of their contents, I set out the uses that can be made of this huge piece of information in the fields of textual criticism, social history, and the history of medicine

Abstract:
This work deals with the life of an exceptional Chinese woman, Yuding, who was born in 1928 in China. It questions the way she has taken up totally paradoxical ways of life, kinship, and union, while living through incredibly uneven times - the beginning of the Republican era, the Second Sino-Japanese war, the civil war, the revolutionary era, the socialist society, and the current globalization. Yuding, presently 87, has kept faith in the venture proposed by the Maoist China, despite underlying wounds left by this violent period. Born in a leading family broken in to Confucian orthopraxy (rituality, morality, worship of the ancestors), Yuding then undergoes the influence of another “formatting” this of Maoism and its revolutionary doctrine. Very quickly, the traditional ideology of “filial devotion” passed on by her parents makes way for complete devotion to the Communist Party. Passionate activist from the Liberation, she leads an active life within the Women's Federation. French interpreter, she is brought round to traveling as much in Europe as in Africa, at a period during which very few persons were going out China. Yet, being an intellectual, she is sent to a labour camp “School of the Seventh of May” in 1968, but she doesn't lose her unquestioning adherence to the Party ideology. There soon won't be anybody from her generation, who was pioneer in the building of the People's Republic of China, to give accounts of this era. Her biography is a testimony of this exceptional experience

Abstract:
This dissertation deals with "the Chinese mind", which means the national character of China. Its main argument is that psychological variable is the key to understand and to explain how China behaves. In fact, the author uses a "psycho-cultural" approach to analyze Chinese political behaviors and diplomatic crises. To do so, two heads of State, Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao, are studied. The behaviors of these Chinese leaders are therefore supposed to refer to the State’s behaviors. Empirically, two exercises are involved to psychologically study these political figures: their biography for one part (in the first part of the dissertation) and their conducts during bilateral crises for another (in the second part of the dissertation) – The author collects hundreds of public and private speeches of the two Chinese leaders in order to scientifically analyze their psychological patterns. Alongside the content analysis, the author heavily relies on a quantitative method, the discourse analysis, to decode the speeches of Jiang and Hu from 1989 to 2011 and to assess, at a distance, the two Chinese leaders’ psychocultural profile. Seven concepts the most pronounced in the political culture of China are selected in the exercise. These elements are treated as indices to generate quantitative data from speeches and to test the validity of such “psychocultural” hypothesis. These seven concepts are: nationalism-patriotism, harmony, hierarchy, filial piety, face, guanxi (interpersonal relationship), and the fear of luan (chaos). Combined qualitative and quantitative analysis, this research successfully proves the constant influence of "psychoculture" in China’s behaviors, particularly in the circumstances of diplomatic crises

Abstract:
This thesis is a study of history and biography in modern China. It is historiographical in focus, examining one way in which the writing of history has changed during the course of the twentieth century. As a biographical perspective was central to traditional Chinese historical writing, such a study of the relationship of biography and history can help reveal what it is that distinguishes modern historical writing from the tradition out of which it has emerged. The first chapter looks at the origins of biographical writing in China, the traditional relationship between biography and history, and the dominance of a biographical perspective on the past. Chapter Two provides an assessment of how that traditional relationship between history and biography changed during the early twentieth century, the transition from the traditional practice of biographical history to the writing of modern historical biographies. Chapter Three then looks in detail at the work of Zhu Dongrun, at his views on what modern biography should be and at his biography of the late Ming scholar and statesman Zhang Juzheng. In Chapter Four the focus shifts to a consideration of the re-evaluation of biography and of the role of the individual in history during the early years of the People's Republic. Chapter Five is devoted to the historical and biographical writing of Wu Han, and, in particular, to the way political changes influenced his biography of the first Ming emperor Zhu Yuanzhang. Finally, in the Epilogue, brief consideration is given to the revival of biographical writing during the 1980s. By exploring the evolving relationship between history and biography, it is hoped that this thesis will contribute to an appreciation of how modem Chinese have reshaped their past in order to give it new significance.
