Yam, Richard Ching Man. "Strategic development of HK/China manufacturing industries." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1996. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/36190/.

Full text
Abstract:
Since China adopted its Open Door policy, many of the Hong Kong low cost manufacturing activities have been relocated to China. This project analyses the strategic development of HK/China manufacturing industries in order to identify the measures necessary to preserve the role of HK for sustaining growth in HK/China manufacturing industries. The historical development of HK manufacturing industries, the economic reformation in China and the inseparable relationship of the two places have been analyzed. Previous studies in this field have concentrated on Hong Kong investments in China in aggregate. The purpose of this thesis is to take a specific look at the industrial sector in which Hong Kong has historically held international competitive advantages, i.e. its low cost light engineering manufacturing. This thesis investigates the reasons why it has been strategically beneficial for establishing Hong Kong industries with the emerging Chinese industries in the Pearl River Delta(PRD) by relocating HK production on a large scale. The benefits to each region are discussed and a future development model is derived for this sector. Strategic/operational attributes, i.e. quality, product, technology and logistics aspects, which are important to contribute to the complementary development of the industries in the two places have been studied in details through series of extensive questionnaire surveys and structured interviews. The heavy reliance on low cost approach with poor technology development so far adopted by HK manufacturers has been critically reviewed. The project concludes that the success of the current HK/China manufacturing industries is the results of the proper economic reformation policy adopted by China at the right time and in the right place. China reoriented its economic policy to "Growth through complete transfer of technology and management know how via foreign direct investment(FDI) with focus on light export-oriented manufacturing industries developed in PRD Special Economic Zone(SEZ) adjacent to HK." HK low cost manufacturing industries relocated to PRD at about the same time to resolve its ever escalating landllabour costs problems. To sustain growth and competitiveness, the quality experiences, i.e. 15O9000-CQITQM, gained in HK through the 1S09000 movement can form a good foundation for China to build up its quality capabilities. To cut costs, HK manufacturers can expand their operations beyond the major cities in PRD to other areas within PRD where logistic support has been improved. HK manufacturers need to migrate from the sole focus in low cost approach to emphasizing more new product and high technology development. Through the better utilization of the China's R&D talents and the commitment from HK manufacturers to gradually upgrade their new product and technology development, HK would be able to preserve its leading role to contribute to the development of HK/China manufacturing industries rather than being overtaken by the Chinese.

Abstract:

U.S. manufacturing companies’ offshoring of investments to China over the past 4 decades before 2017 has played a significant role in China’s economic growth. However, as China’s economy expands and the country’s standard of living improves, U.S. manufacturing executives are required to take a refreshed look at current investment strategies to adjust for rising costs and a tighter regulatory environment. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore economic strategies that U.S. manufacturing leaders used to offshore effectively to China. The study included in-person interviews of 9 purposeful sampled manufacturing leaders, fluent in English, from 2 U.S. organizations with China operations headquartered in Shanghai. The conceptual framework for this study was the total quality management theory. Four themes emerged in the data from these interviews, on-site observations, and company documentation review, including: (a) movement of innovation closer to production in China; (b) increased localization of the legacy offshoring business; (c) enhancement of China-based cross-functional teams; and (d) incrementally investing to achieve production scale. These findings suggest that U.S. manufacturing leaders need to adapt to a changing and dynamic China market by focusing on local issues to maintain global competitiveness. The implications for positive social change include equipping manufacturing business leaders with information to address offshoring-related decisions more effectively. Additional social change benefits include the overall rise in international safety standards in China, resulting from offshoring investments and the training of manufacturing workers, which prepare them for more advanced roles in the workforce.

Abstract:
Background:China could be seemed as a highly developing country. There are many opportunities and challenges inChina. Its preferential policies and huge potential market attract a lot of foreign companies to come toChina. Meanwhile, Chinese government encourages the development of domestic enterprises. Therefore, at present there mainly coexist three forms of enterprises inChina: foreign-funded companies, private companies and state-controlling companies. In order to enhance competitiveness, almost every company in china has its own supply chain network. Supply Chain management plays an important role in Chinese companies. Research question: 1.     What is the current situation of purchasing process and purchasing process integration for some manufacturers of different ownerships in China?   2.     How can purchasing process be integrated for some manufacturers of different ownerships in China from manufacture’s perspectives?   Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to study the current situation in purchasing process integration in Chinese manufacturing industry of three kinds of ownership and evaluate the purchasing process of three kinds of companies in China. In addition, it gives some suggestions to remove potential obstacles and optimize the purchasing process; and aims to help the companies to gain competitive advantage in the long term.   Method: The empirical foundation for this thesis is intended to be on multiple case study method. It studies of the three types of manufacturing enterprises in China. To represent these three types of companies, three companies are chosen from each as selected research objects. Data is collected through semi-structure interviews, so the questionnaire would be open-ended. Long-distance telephone interview with purchasing managers and material managers separately for each company would be adopted.   Conclusion: The purchasing process of three companies who represent three different types of ownership is studied. It studies the current situation in purchasing process integration in Chinese manufacturing industry of three kinds of ownership and evaluates the purchasing process of three kinds of companies in China. Then the obstacles in purchasing process are found out. Then suggestions on purchasing process integration are used to tackle these obstacles.   Future Work: This thesis focuses on three manufacturing companies in China. The result of this thesis cannot represent all the obstacles in purchasing process in manufacturing industry in China. But the purchasing process, characteristics, strength and weakness are similar in the same type of ownership. Meanwhile, the recommendation on purchasing process integration also cannot solve all the obstacles found, due to the companies’ own condition. In future research, it recommends to add more research companies. Furthermore, more studies could be included to identify common obstacles and dig out solutions related to purchasing process integration in Chinese manufacturing industry.

Chouinard, Natalie 1979. "China production equipment sourcing strategy." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/51664.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering; and, (M.B.A.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management; in conjunction with the Leaders for Manufacturing Program at MIT, 2009.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 61-62).
This thesis recommends a China business and equipment strategy for the Controls Conveyor Robotics Welding (CCRW) group at General Motors. The current strategy is to use globally common equipment through predetermined global suppliers. The GM facilities in China, which are jointly owned with non-GM entities, believe that a local sourcing strategy would reduce lead times, transportation costs and increase the level of nearby service and support. These factors are catalyst for GM to reevaluate the current global common strategy. This thesis will provide an overview of the CCRW organization and discuss how the sourcing strategy has evolved through globalization. Due to the large variety of production tooling, this thesis will narrow the focus to two case studies: the first being a Main Control Panel (MCP) and the second being a weld controller. These case studies are used as a method to determine the pros and cons of the current sourcing strategy, where the MCP is a highly integrated design maintained by CCRW HQ and the weld controller is a "blackbox" which CCRW defines the functional specifications and procures "off the shelf' from a predetermined global supplier. Through local China visits, literature review and preliminary cost assessments, it was determined that while local sourcing may be a viable option for both the MCP and weld controller, there is not enough determinate information to commit to a sourcing change in the case of the Main Control Panel. From onsite visits to potential MCP option suppliers in China, it appears that likely "local" arrangements exists, however, further company analysis and validation will need to be conducted to adopt the change.
(cont.) As for the weld controller, the local product variation with the current global supplier (based locally) is recommended and was validated by CCRW weld engineers by the completion of this internship. I The term "Local" will be used throughout this thesis to refer to "China," meaning solutions that are derived from internal to China.

Abstract:
The big country in the Far East appeared in the past as if only big corporates could do business there. This point of view changed immensely over the past 10 years. Nowadays, numerous co-working spaces, maker spaces, and incubators present a fertile ground for young ventures. The situation around the Chinese startup scene changed dramatically. With the current government’s Five-Year-Plan, it becomes obvious that the political change is in favor of those young individuals who bring jobs and new perspectives for the country. Obviously, the target is not to promote western startups to settle in China primarily but to give Chinese startups the inspiration through the foreign spirit. So the research question goes as follows: What aspects of a manufacturing project will influence the success of a foreign entrepreneur in China? The methodology for this study is widely based on literature review and semistructured interviews with entrepreneurs, consultancy agencies, and nongovernmental organizations. Whereas the focus lays on foreign startups whose goal is to set up manufacturing of a consumer product in China.

Abstract:
During the process of globalization, China has gained a position as an extremely important player on the world economic stage. The country has become particularly famous as a hub for the global manufacturing industry, with a large quantity of cheap labor that produces low-cost products. However, there is now growing concern that the labor costs for China’s manufacturing workforce are growing rampantly. This could have obvious detrimental effects for Chinese exports, and foreshadow major restructuring of China’s economy, with important consequences for the rest of the world. With this background, the research aims to answer the questions of whether wages are indeed growing as quickly as reported, and what factors could explain such growth. The paper pays special attention to the so-called Lewis model, as many analysts claim that it explains the great increase in compensation levels for Chinese manufacturing workers. The Lewis model is explained and its applicability to China is discussed. The study also examines other possible explanatory factors to establish the causes of the increasing labor costs. The research aims to triangulate a diversity of sources, including quantitative data supplied by major national and international agencies, qualitative data in the form of media reports, and two company case studies conducted by the author. The paper concludes that manufacturing wages have indeed risen sharply in recent years, and are likely to continue to do so. However, it is found that the labor costs for unskilled workers is not as important of a factor for manufacturing companies in China as is commonly believed. For export companies specifically, it is found that Chinese currency appreciation is a much greater economic threat. In regard to the Lewis model, no conclusive evidence is found that it is a sufficient or even very good explanation of the rising manufacturing wages. Instead, it is found that a high level of inflation, especially in some parts of China, can explain a large part of the publicized increase in labor costs.

Abstract:
Since the late 1970s, China has gradually transformed from a planned system towards a market economy and its private sector has played increasingly important roles in the national development. During the process, Chinese private manufacturing firms made remarkable contribution to advancing reform, driving growth, enhancing export and improving employment. After the early 2000s, China joined in the World Trade Organisation and aimed to further progress its development through globalisation. The deep integration with the global economy has greatly facilitated China’s global competitiveness in manufacturing industries, but it has also brought the country with a series of development challenges. Nowadays, many Chinese private manufacturing firms are encountering various problems and stuck in development predicament. This dissertation tries to explore the question: What are the current development challenges for Chinese private manufacturing firms in globalisation? The research question is relevant to a wide range of theoretical and empirical research in development studies, including firm competition in global value chains, industrial districts in the global economy, large business in global competition and global battles within China. Building on critical reviews on related literature, the dissertation tries to enrich the existing knowledge by investigating the latest development of China’s manufacturing industries, analysing the challenges and responses of Chinese leading private firms of both large and small sizes individually, and discussing how the interaction of foreign and indigenous firms in both domestic and international markets shapes the global competitiveness of Chinese private firms. The dissertation mainly conducts qualitative inquiry and case studies to analyse the research question. Wenzhou is an outstanding pioneer in China to develop private economy and lead economic reform. The dissertation therefore makes in-depth investigation on Wenzhou’s leading firms in the footwear and the electrical equipment industries, to reflect China’s development in globalisation. Based on Wenzhou’s experience, the dissertation summarises the competition situation of Chinese private manufacturing firms in globalisation, concludes their current development challenges and puts forward policy implications for China’s economic reform and industrial upgrade.

Full text
Abstract:
The topic of outsourcing ranks at the top of business issues for a wide variety of companies (Wery, 2004; Ezrati, 2004). The majority of American companies believe that offshore-related matters rank as the most strategic decisions that management is expected to make in the next 12 months (Wery, 2004). “Outsourcing in China can help many companies save money, but it can be very frustrating if not done right" (Ting, 2004). The perceived benefits of outsourcing production to China are tremendously enticing, but a lack of understanding of the total costs involved lures many companies into outsourcing when it is not necessarily the best decision. The question then arises and becomes the purpose of this study: How does a company decide if offshore outsourcing is the right decision and, if so, how do they do it properly? The purpose of this research is to search for generally applicable information that can be utilized by American companies in deciding whether to outsource their production to China. The information regarding outsourcing overseas was collected from 22 American firms and 24 Chinese manufacturers to evaluate and provide insight into outsourcing arrangements. In the final chapter of this thesis, a summary is presented of the important findings regarding the purpose of the thesis study.

Abstract:
During firing, the deformation of ceramic articles under their own weight may be problematic particularly in the sanitary ware industry where articles are large. A model has been developed that predicts the viscoelastic deformation of a range of vitreous china testpieces during the firing process. The model constitutes a novel application of the transmission line modelling technique to viscoelastic deformation. The applicability of the model to the sanitary ware industry is addressed.

Abstract:
Recent years, foreign manufacturers have extended their manufacturing footprint to include China. According to the World Bank China has overtaken Japan as the world’s second-largest economy since 2010. China’s growth is largely funded by a continuous manufacturing boom where both domestic industries and infrastructure have developed extensively, facilitating foreign-owned manufacturing companies to locate production in China. An important issue of common interest to all manufacturing companies in the course of localising production to China is how to develop an efficient supply base. The purpose of the thesis is to identify the factors related to local supply base development that affect production localisation in China. An identification and analysis of factors for foreign manufactures to consider when developing the supply base for their China production facilities is presented. The thesis work is executed based on a comprehensive literature study and interviews with twelve manufacturing firms (comprising eight foreign manufacturers and four local supplier companies) in China from April to July, 2012. The thesis investigates factors of importance to supply base localisation in China. The analysis of the empirical and theoretical findings constitutes the bases for increased understanding supporting foreign manufactures, especially for those small and medium firms, in their development of a supply base and sourcing strategy for production in China.

Abstract:

ITT Flygt is an international company that produces mixers and submersible pumps for a global market. The main production site is located in Sweden but there are other production plants all over the world, for instance in China. The plant in Shenyang, China, manufactures small and midsize pumps but in order to gain advantages on the Chinese market a project to start production of the largest pumps in China has been initiated. This thesis describes a study of possible alternatives for a production system dedicated to the production of large pumps in China.

A study of the existing production system for large pumps in Sweden gives a chance to divide the production into smaller parts, processes, to facilitate the future work. The content of each process, the interfaces between the processes and the resources needed for each process are examined. These parameters and the list of existing resources in China are used in the process of generating alternatives for the new production system in China. The list of existing resources in China is created by the means of interviews and studies of Flygt’s factory in Shenyang. There is also another factory in China that can be used for the new production system. This plant, located in Nanjing, can also be used for testing pumps and for other processes, but it has not been visited.

The possible alternatives include a solution where all the processes are performed in Shenyang and several different options where the work is divided among the two plants in order to utilize the existing resources in the best possible way. In the discussion of possible alternatives their strengths and weaknesses are discussed so that all the proposed ideas are compared relative to each other.

The recommendations are based on practical aspects as well as theories presented in the theoretical framework. Much emphasis is given to the ability to use existing knowledge and resources in order to minimize the need for investments to compensate for the low volume of large pumps that initially will be produced in China. The recommended system is a solution where both plants are used. The machining and main assembly should be located in Shenyang and the testing and all the processes following the testing should be located in Nanjing. The location of the washing and painting process has to be analyzed further by comparing the costs for needed investments. The costs should also be compared to the advantages of locating the washing and painting process in Shenyang.

The recommended solutions are discussed on a comprehensive level, mainly focusing on the location and the order of the processes. The next step for the company is to design the processes in detail in order to prepare for the production of large pumps in China.

Fujita, Mai. "The economic rise of China and the transformation of Vietnam's motorcycle industry." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2013. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/44727/.

Full text
Abstract:
This submission consists of a collection of four papers. Each paper stands on its own and makes a specific contribution to knowledge. However, the four papers are also closely connected, each providing a building block for understanding how China's economic rise has affected Vietnam's industrial development. Taken together, these papers show that the conclusion reached on how China's rise affects its neighbours depends fundamentally on understanding the changing dynamics over time. So as to unravel these dynamics, this collection focuses on the motorcycle industry and covers a period of a decade. At the beginning of that decade China's economic rise seemed to be a disaster for Vietnam's industrial development. By the end the decade, it turned out to have transformed Vietnam's industrial development and production capabilities. At the heart of this intriguing dynamic is the competition between two models of industrial organisation. The first paper conceptualises the two contrasting models of industrial organisation that underlie the Japanese dominance and the Chinese catch-up in the Asian motorcycle industry. The second and third papers present the findings of the empirical research on Vietnam's motorcycle industry covering a period of a decade. The second paper shows that China's economic rise brought about repeated rounds of competition between the Japanese and Chinese models of industrial organisation attempting to gain supremacy in the third country market of Vietnam. The third paper shows that local component suppliers were able to build up considerable production capabilities in the course of the decade as the changes in industrial organisation created new learning opportunities for these suppliers. Drawing together the findings of the research, the fourth paper argues that the impact of China's economic rise on the development of Vietnam's motorcycle industry changed over a decade and that the changing impact can be explained in terms of successive changes in industrial organisation.
