Abstract:
Frithjof participated in several North Pole expeditions between 1898 and 1907 and was also involved in several relief expeditions. Her most frequent commander was Captain Johan Kjeldsen, who was an internationally famous ice pilot. Frithjof was built in 1884 at Stokke on Oslo fjord, Norway. After being employed in the sealing trade for some years, Frithjof was sold to an Icelandic concern. In 1891 she returned to Norwegian ownership and, in 1898, was chartered for Walter Wellman's North Pole expedition of the years 1898–1899. In 1900, she was the expedition ship for the Kolthoff expedition to Greenland, Spitsbergen and Jan Mayen. Between 1901 and 1904 she was engaged in Ziegler's North Pole expeditions both as expedition ship and as relief vessel. In 1903 the Swedish government chartered Frithjof in order to search for the Nordenskjöld expedition in the Antarctic. In 1906–7 the ship was again chartered for Wellman's North Pole airship expeditions. In late September 1907, Frithjof sailed from Tromsø on a relief expedition to search for Laura, an expedition vessel to Greenland that had not been heard of for three months. On 5 October 1907 she was lost in a storm off Iceland and only one man survived from her crew of 17.

Abstract:
Based on the documents from the State Archive of Khabarovsk Krai, this article is devoted to the history of the Courses of Oriental languages at the Headquarters of the Priamour Military District. The author analyzes the history of creating these courses after the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905, as a result of the war, and of the Russian military expedition in China in 1900–1901. During both campaigns the shortage not only of the translators and dragomans but also of the oriental language-speaking officers was a great problem for the Russian Army in the Far East. The article investigates the reasons, the aim, the schedule and the character of the lessons conducted for officers and soldiers, who studied the Chinese, Japanese, and, at the very beginning, Korean languages. In this report, for the first time, we publish the list of officers and soldiers who received awards on successful completion of the courses of Chinese and Japanese languages in 1912–1913. The Courses faculty members, who taught in 1911–1913, are also identified. As a result, it is concluded that the courses probably had a certain impact on the combat readiness of the troops of the Priamour Military District.

Abstract:
The China Relief Expedition, an eight-nation military effort, was organized to rescue foreign nationals in the country during the Boxer Uprising (1899–1901). In Thirteen Months in China, Thakur Gadadhar Singh, a British Indian soldier of the 7th Rajput Regiment, recounts his experiences as he set sail along with his men for Beijing in the summer of 1900. Written shortly after his return to India in 1901, he details several aspects of China and its people he met over the course of thirteen months. Part travelogue, part history, Singh’s eyewitness account offers a first-hand view of the tumultuous events of the Boxer Uprising and its aftermath, as also of Chinese society, culture, politics, religion, and art and architecture, often in a comparative perspective. It is a rare historical source of an Indian subaltern’s outlook on the history of China, and its customs and practices.
