Full textThis thesis intends to show how a chinese analist of the eighth century succeeded, by means of a series of methodological accounts, in elaborating the world's first historiographical treatise that tries to grasp rigorously the whole field covered by the historical genre, from origins to his own time, with the aim, not only to endow "historian functionaries" with recipes able to improve techniques used to compile official histories they were made responsible for doing but also to invite them to a critical reflection upon the evolution of the genre, its political significance and its involvements for collective memory. The main part of the study consists in a commented translation of the fourteen first chapters of Liu's shitong, in addition to which was translated the autobiographical chapter (ch. 36) where the author expounds the purposes of his method and the circumstances of its elaboration. The study also gives a series of detailed summaries condensing the matter contained in chapters which could not be yet fully translated, in order to allow the reader to understand better the context in which the author developed his problematics inside the "inner part" (Neipian) of his treatise
