Abstract:
Intercountry, transracial adoptions, such as adoptions of Korean and Chinese children by American families, raise questions about the formation of ethnic identities of the adoptees. Such questions were addressed in a study of 40 Korean adopted children and their American parents. It was found that a high degree of involvement by children in Korean cultural activities was positively associated with scores measuring the strength of the children's Korean identity as well as with ease of communication with their parents about their adoptions. Parental encouragement of cultural activities and co-participation in them seemed to be critical in the development of ethnic identification.

Abstract:
To test whether adoption differentially benefited adopted youth’s behavioral health, 243 female American youth who were adopted from China were compared with 234 non-adopted American peers, and 955 non-adopted Chinese peers living in China on four composite scales: School Problems, Internalizing Problems, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Personal Adjustment. The adopted youth were from high socioeconomic status (SES) families, while the two comparison groups were from average SES families. Self-report data were collected with the third edition of the Behavior Assessment System for Children (BASC-3). Effect sizes showed that the adopted youth outperformed their non-adopted American and Chinese peers. Latent mean comparison using Mplus 8 showed that, controlling for age difference, the adopted youth’s advantages over the comparison groups in some subscales dissipated. These findings were explained with possible compensating effects afforded by growing up in high SES adoptive environment, as well as on children’s differential susceptibility to the benefit of intervention.

Bryant, Monica Raye. "Decision Making and the Adoption Process for American Families of Chinese Children: An Application of Rational Choice Theory." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32411.

Abstract:
Interviews were conducted with 20 parents in the US who have adopted one or more children from China. The study focuses on the motivation to adopt, decision making regarding adoption and the process in relation to rational choice theory. The interviews also inquired about their required adoption trip to China and the post-adoption adjustment phase including bonding and developmental delays, as well as about why families chose to adopt from China, how they learned about the adoption agency they used and whether or not they knew families that had adopted internationally and more specifically from China. This information provided insight into the way that families obtained information that helped them reach important decisions throughout the adoption process.<br>Master of Science
