Full textThe memoirs of the Academy of Letters and Literature are an invaluable testament to the relationship between Europe and China during the years 1700-1750. Three major areas emerge from these studies carried out mainly by Nicolas Fréret and Etienne Fourmont : language, literature and history. They have tried to find answers to questions raised during many debates in intellectual circles. Fréret gathered historical facts learned from Chinese literature and has analyzed them in detail. He concluded that the Chinese language is not a philosophical language, and that the Chinese chronology is authentic, but it does not go further back than 2000 BC. Fourmont, concentrated on linguistic studies, is known as a great Orientalist, especially for writing a French-Chinese dictionary and a Chinese grammar

Full textAlthough the technology and the high standard of living make taiwan a modern country, the problem between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law does not disappear with the modern life. Mentalities do not develop as quickly as the progress of the society. The chinese people respect their traditions and their culture: to have respectful affection toward their parents, to attend to their old parents are a heavenly duty. Generation gap, cohabitation increase the gravity of this problem. Seventy-seven per cent of daughters-in-law enquired in this study think that this problem is "important" or "very important". How to resolve the problem? I think to live not far from her parents-in-law is a good solution, because the daughterin-law is independant, but at the same time, she can take care of them

Full textTo what extent did bells contribute to the formation of soundscapes in the temples of Ming-Qing Beijing and to the construction of the temples as sacred spaces in the city? By using multiple types of materials, including extant objects, epigraphic data, religious texts, local histories, and the writings of scholars, this PhD thesis argues that bells emitted spiritually meaningful sounds, built bridges between different worlds, reconstructed the space and structured the time of the religious site that housed them. They gave the temples of Beijing a particular sound environment where a major place was given to quietness, which represented the sacred identity of an ideal Chinese religious foundation. Residents and visitors to the capital in the late imperial period not only wanted to realize exchanges between gods and men in the various temples of the city, but also sought extraordinary sensory perceptions, in order to obtain a divine experience different from the everyday life. This suggests that studies of Chinese temples should seek to combine the “historiographical” approach, which studies historical facts that took place in religious sites, with the “poetic” approach, which illustrates how these sites are represented. We can achieve the meeting of these two lines of inquiry by taking a more active interest in the sensory culture in temples

In this thesis, the computational sound synthesis models of the ancient Chinese Chime-bells have been presented. The Chinese Chime-bell (also known as Chinese two tone bells) is one of the greatest inventions throughout the Chinese history for having various fascinating acoustical properties such as being able to produce two tones on one single bell. To further understand the acoustical properties, the sounds from a replicated Chime-bell set of Marquis Yi of Zeng had been sampled and analyzed. The pitch discrimination between the original set and this replica has been evaluated. Two models based on the acoustical features of the Chime-bells have been proposed to synthesize the bell sounds. The concept of the inharmonic digital waveguides has been adopted for the implementation of the models. The results show that Chime-bell like sounds could be successfully synthesized. More efforts will be put on real-time implementation and qualitative sound generation in the future.

Based on iconography of music and organology, this thesis uses the bell and drum tower of the National Heritage Temples of Taipei City as the study object to explore the relationship between visual image and music. Firstly, by looking into the origin of the bell and drum tower, to understand the function of the bell and drum tower and in what conditions it was set up throughout history, as well as to understand how the emphases were placed on the bell and drum in palace, city, and temple. Then, the musical imagery research procedural of Tilman Seebass is adopted to observe the bell and drum tower of the National Heritage Temples of Taipei City, which is regarded here as the static visual percept. The observation of this static visual percept includes the musical instruments’ outward appearance, decorative patterns, text contents, architecture and ornaments, so as to explore the multi-facade visual expressions and symbolic meanings of the music instrument in space. The discussion on the aspects of symbolism and culture also covers the dynamic sound. As this thesis also touches on the discussions about musical instruments, the aspect of organology is brought in to explore the ways bells and drums are used in specific cultural occasions to present the multi-facade of human life and to gain deeper understanding of the cultural meaning of these musical instruments. Finally, the meaning of the bell and drum tower in terms of the temple culture is discussed. The ritual ceremony of ringing bell and drumming on New Year eve to usher in the New Year is the most important purpose the bell and drum tower of the modern temple culture; as such, only through the recognition generated by the same life experience will enable this culture to pass on.

SUBJECT : A Research In Comparison Between Chinese And Japanese Proverbs About 「Eye」,「Belly」And 「Heart」 DEPARTMENT: Graduate School of Soochow University, Department of Japanese literature ACADEMIC YEAR: 2005 COUNSELOR:Lai, Jiin-Chiueh POSTGRADUATE: Yeh, Chien-Chen OUTLINE: Proverbs, cultural inheritance, are the production of our ancestor’ s wisdom and experience. Old as tales, they are still heard in our daily conversation and writings. It goes without saying that there’s a close relationship between Chinese and Japanese. Therefore, Chinese has a great influence on Japanese culture. Due to the different living background, proverbs change with time and history. This is what is going to be discussed. The range of this research is limited to the proverbs about eye, belly and heart, which have lots of interaction with our spirit. Chapter 1: Preface-motivation, range and approaches Chapter 2: Proverbs about eye Chapter 3: Proverbs about belly Chapter 4: Proverbs about heart Chapter 5: Conclusion The research shows that the most common characteristic of the interactions between eye, belly, heart and spirit is emotions. Because it is easier for eye, belly and heart to react to joy, anger, sadness and happiness. On the contrary, will, sense and consciousness won’t react immediately to our eye, and belly. The range of this research is limited to the reaction between eye, belly, heart and spirit. What caused by spirit change might not only be eye, belly and heart, but our mouth, hand and foot as well. This can be the next research.

This study compares and analyzes the Chinese translation versions of A Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bell Tolls published in Taiwan before the martial law was lifted in 1987. Though A Farewell to Arms enjoys huge popularity and wide acceptance by the public in Taiwan, readers are less familiar with For Whom the Bell Tolls. Therefore, the study also aims to unlock the mystery behind this phenomenon by examining the translation quality of each Chinese version of the two novels. The study is comprised of five chapters, with Chapter 1 giving a general picture of the study, including research direction and the framework of the study, as well as relevant previous studies. Chapter 2 touches on the life and works of Ernest Hemingway, and the summaries of A Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bell Tolls are also provided in this chapter. Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 discuss and compare various Chinese versions of A Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bell Tolls respectively, with examples focusing on paragraphs that manifest Ernest Hemingway’s pacifist views. Major findings of the study are laid out in the final chapter.
