Lau, Walter C. "Shepherding the Shepherds| Effective Leadership Development in Chinese American Churches." Thesis, Biola University, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3557238.

Full text
Abstract:

With the many challenges that Chinese American churches are facing, together with the ever-changing needs of their members, Chinese American churches need to look for ways to nurture their members and to develop them into mature leaders. This thesis project is designed to explore the leadership development strategies of selected Chinese churches in North America that have demonstrated certain effectiveness and success in developing leaders, in hopes of discovering some common effective leadership development strategies. This author has interviewed eleven large Chinese American churches, with Sunday attendance ranging from 500 to 2600, regarding the strategies they use and the challenges they face in developing leaders. Using qualitative analysis, this author has discovered some common principles that have been used by these churches to develop leaders and has formulated some practical pointers that may be applicable to other Chinese American churches and beyond.

The findings reveal that faith and character development precedes skill training. Likewise, Christ-like character, spiritual maturity, and a willingness to serve are more important than a person's natural abilities and talents. In addition, the pastoral staff should be highly involved in designing and executing the leadership development programs. Moreover, the church should create a learning atmosphere by publicizing and offering life-relevant and need-based trainings through classrooms, small groups, or other venues. Outside resources such as guest speakers, seminars and conferences should also be utilized. Furthermore, opportunities should be provided for lay people to participate in service with the help of on-the-job training and ongoing support.

Lee, Siu Chau. "The theology of church-state relations in Protestant thought with final reference to the contemporary context of the Chinese churches." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2001. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.368836.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis is a study of the theology of church-state relations in Protestant thought with reference to the secular world and the Chinese context in particular. The theological basis is the Chalcedonian character of differentiation without confusion yet coordination without division. Hence I argue for both complementarity of church and state and critical support of the church for the state. In the contemporary pluralist era, the church should recognize itself as one among other institutions cooperating with the state for the benefit of society. Also the church should emphasize itself as a religious community proclaiming Christ's salvation and a moral community living out Christ's love for others. The manner of applying this theological principle is context-specific, giving rise to different emphases. Luther emphasizes the necessity of civil obedience to be offered by the church to the state, unless the state oversteps its limit. This emphasis fits in the context of obtaining civil support for his reformation. Calvin upholds a distinction while emphasizing a cooperation of the two entities to regulate society, even allowing the convergence of their jurisdiction. It is feasible only when the Genevan city council sides with Calvin's reformation, providing a suitable context beforehand. In the context of Nazi Germany, Barth emphasizes a theology of mutual responsibility as the basis of church and state to fulfil their obligations. His writing of Barmen Declaration manifests a distinctive confessional responsibility as the basis of Christian political witness. This context of a totalitarian government also promotes Bonhoeffer's teaching on Christian discipleship, emphasizing representative action which is an imitation of Christ to live for others, even to the extent of self-sacrifice. Moreover, by stressing religious and political differentiation, secularization leads to a more clarified distinction of the functions of church and state in society. Yet the context of secularization enhances the theology of mutual responsibility of church and state which can beneift society as a whole. It excludes the concept of anarchy, and the church's flight from the concrete conditions of human society. The Chinese context further reveals that the church in this modern world is no longer the sole partner of the state but is merely one among other institutions working for the good of the nation. So the church's contribution to secular order is less at the level of state and more at the level of civil society.

McLeister, M. "Negotiating policy and practice : a micro-level analysis of Three-Self churches in a coastal Chinese city." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2012. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3893/.

Full text
Abstract:
This doctoral project is an ethnographic account of the interactions between Protestant Three-Self (TSPM) churches and the local state in a coastal Chinese city. Adopting a framework of embeddedness and developing the concept of symbiosis, the study presents an original and nuanced analysis of church-state relations. I demonstrate that the embedded nature of the churches in the local state and the symbiotic relationship between the Three-Self churches and the Religious Affairs Bureau allows for the creation of informal structures and procedures. The project analyses these informal channels, arguing that they provide space for religious activities, some of which occupy an ambiguous 'grey' area while others are officially prohibited. These activities help facilitate proselytising and the expansion of the churches. While religious specialists and lay believers seek to utilise their relationship with the state, they do not consciously resist the state but rather seek to spread the Protestant message which they believe is not in conflict with state projects but has more to offer than the political messages of the state. The relationship between the churches and local state institutions results in the state providing resources which aid in the transformation of the state-religion nexus.

Lu, Chu Yi. "The Development of Christianity in Contemporary China." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2014. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/4349.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to study the development of Christianity in contemporary China. It adds to the limited literature that explores how Christianity has developed as the fastest growing religion in China post the Chinese Cultural Revolution. The data derive from semi-structured and focus group interviews with Chinese Christians and field observation notes collected at both official and non-official Christian churches in Beijing. I found an ambivalent attitude toward the development of Christianity across different social levels in China. At the state level, the Chinese government expects Christianity to provide a much-needed stabilizing influence in an increasingly self-centered and materialistic society. At the same time, the government fears that Christianity's increasing power may pose a threat to the Communist regime. Correspondingly, at the community level, Chinese Christians wish to see an increasing Christian influence throughout Chinese society to improve people's quality of life, but many Chinese traditionalists oppose the increased Christian influence that seems to be supplanting traditional Chinese culture. These disagreements do not seem to have seriously impeded the development of Christianity in China today. Applying a pervasive cultural perspective – the lens of Yin-Yang interaction – to the current situation of the Christian churches in China, I find that the Yin traits within Christianity and the Yang traits embedded in the Chinese political ideology are coexisting paradoxical values whose interaction facilitates an acceptance, or at least sanction, of oppositions that have reshaped the social and political landscape of Chinese society and fostered the continuing growth of Christianity in China.
