Abstract:
This chapter investigates the syntactic derivation of Chinese resultatives. While in English resultatives the [uDiv] feature is valued with the mechanism of feature sharing, in Chinese resultatives it is valued by a verbal C-functor, by nature equivalent to en in flatten. The Chinese V–V resultative compound is a single de-adjectival verb: the first verb is a verbal C-functor and the second one is an adjective. The V–V resultative construction is therefore analyzed as a causative construction involving a de-adjectival verb. This single hypothesis provides a unified account of the seemingly mys

Abstract:
After defining auxiliary verbs as a grammatical category in Sinitic languages, this chapter sets out to analyze the notion of modality as expressed primarily by the Chinese modal verbs. Beginning with a brief sketch of their diachronic evolution, we proceed to treat this category in each of three major Sinitic languages, namely, Standard Mandarin, Hong Kong Cantonese, and Taiwanese Southern Min (Hokkien). It is shown that the main modal verbs possess different sets of polysemy in each of the three languages. Potential verb compounds are also considered, as well as clause-final modal particles

Abstract:
This chapter deals with the Confucian tradition in East Asia and the role played by the Chinese classics in education and learning throughout East Asia and in the civil service examinations which were held in most neighbouring societies. The Chinese classics were by no means easy to understand, so commentarial traditions emerged in China at an early stage; the difficulties were compounded for those who spoke quite different languages, and there was tension between those who considered mastery of the Sinitic texts essential and those who considered the messages they contained more important and

This chapter explores the ways in which the supposedly inert materials of the monastic compound are understood to function as unique vehicles for awakening. It examines Dōgen’s Talk on Pursuing the Way (Bendōwa), dated 1231, and observes how the material universe (the five phases of earth, water, fire, wood, and metal, as well as yin-yang theory and feng shui geomancy) is invoked to envision a new, biaxial Zen temple layout in Japan. It also considers how Dōgen redeploys these material categories, and even alludes to Chinese contract pledges (fu), to seal the deal with his potential patrons in

Mining is the largest sector of the Zambian economy but the relationship between mining companies and their host communities has been fractious, without a clear path towards sustainability. The severe social, economic, and environmental impacts of mining have been compounded by perceived shortcomings in corporate social and environmental responsibility programming by the industry, and by fragile regulatory capacity on the government’s part. This chapter examines the modalities and results of mining community development programmes in Zambia as part of the broader discussion on how large intern

The complexity of China’s rise is well expressed in its aspiration for “a new model of major power relations,” which simultaneously seeks a peaceful coexistence with the United States and a new Asian order with a strong China back in its traditional, central place. Japan is situated at the nexus of this dual nature of China’s rise. This is a natural extension of Deng Xiaoping’s strategy, which used courageous open-door and reform policies and the emphasis on the modern history of humiliation as new sources of legitimacy and unity. Recently, amid a worsening vicious cycle compounded by the phen

Abstract:
Nationalism: Past as Prologue began as a single volume being compiled by Ad Akande, a scholar from South Africa, who proposed it to me as co-author about two years ago. The original idea was to examine how the damaging roots of nationalism have been corroding political systems around the world, and creating dangerous obstacles for necessary international cooperation. Since I (Bruce E. Johansen) has written profusely about climate change (global warming, a.k.a. infrared forcing), I suggested a concerted effort in that direction. This is a worldwide existential threat that affects every living t
