Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to develop and test theory on how commitment human resource (HR) practices affect hospital professionals’ job satisfaction that motivates them to generate desirable patient care and subsequently improve doctor-patient relationships (DPR) and second, to examine how commitment HR practices influence hospital managers and clinicians in different ways. Design/methodology/approach Using a cross-sectional survey, the authors collected data from 508 clinicians and hospital managers from 33 tertiary public hospitals in China. Structural equation model was employed to test the relationships of the variables in the study. Findings Commitment HR practices positively affect the job satisfaction of the healthcare professionals surveyed and a positive relationship is perceived between job satisfaction and DPR. Overall, the model shows a reversal on the strongest path linking job satisfaction and DPR whereby managers’ main association operates through extrinsic job satisfaction while for clinicians it occurs through intrinsic satisfaction only. Practical implications DPR might be improved by applying commitment HR practices to increase healthcare professional’s intrinsic and extrinsic satisfaction. In addition, while recognizing the importance of compensation and benefits to address the underpayment issue of Chinese healthcare professionals, empowerment and autonomy in work, and the use of subjects’ expertise and skills may serve as stronger motivators for clinicians rather than hard economic incentives in achieving DPR improvements. Originality/value This study contributes to the small but growing body of research on human resource management (HRM) in the healthcare sector with new evidence supporting the link between commitment HR practice and work attitudes, as well as work attitudes and patient care from the perspective of clinicians and hospital managers. This study represents an initial attempt to examine the associations among commitment HR practices, job satisfaction and DPR in the Chinese healthcare sector. The findings provide evidence to support the value of commitment HR practices in Chinese hospital context, and demonstrate the importance of effective HRM in improving both hospital managers and clinicians’ work attitudes.

Abstract:
Identification of Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) by human experience is often inaccurate because individual ability and external factors may influence the outcome. However, it might be promising to employ an electronic nose (E-nose) to identify them. This paper presents a rapid and reliable method for identification of ten different species of CHMs fromZingiberaceaefamily based on their response signals from E-nose. TenZingiberaceaeCHMs were measured and their maximum response values were analyzed by principal component analysis (PCA). Result shows thatE Zhu(Curcuma phaeocaulisVal.) andYi Zhi(Alpinia oxyphyllaMiq.) could not be distinguished completely by PCA. Two solutions were proposed: (i) using BestFirst+CfsSubsetEval (BC) method to extract more discriminative features to select sensors with higher contribution rate and remove the redundant signals; (ii) employing a novel cascade classifier with two stages to enhance the distinguishing-positive rate (DPR). Based on these strategies, six features were extracted and used in different stages of the cascade classifier with higher DPRs.

Abstract: Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of treatment that has survived and evolved not only in the Far East (China), but around the world. The technique involves inserting needles at various levels of depth of the skin at specific points called "Acupoints" and can be stimulated manually or with a low voltage electrical current (electroacupuncture). It is part of a set of therapeutic techniques the traditional chinese medicine and is currently practiced as primary therapy and adjuvant for a variety of diseases and chronic conditions. On the other hand the MS is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system characterized by infiltration of immune cells in this compartment, with destruction of myelin and oligodendrocytes loss. It is the most common of the autoimmune diseases of the central nervous system and is a disease that mostly affects young adults, being more common in women, causing multiple signs and symptoms of neurological dysfunction. Approximately 85% of patients present form recurrent-remitting MS (relapsing/remitting), which presenting symptom of neurological events (exacerbation, relapse or attack) with periods of stabilization or improvement (remission). Modern immunomodulatory therapies have been employed in the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis, however, do not alleviate many of the symptoms such as pain and depression, leading to deterioration in quality of life. Patients, therefore, seek alternative treatments such as acupuncture, although the benefits of these treatments have not been objectively evaluated. The use of model experimental autoimmune encephalitis has brought large contributions to the understanding of mechanisms and understanding the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases such as MS. This study was therefore designed to evaluate the effect of electro on the quality of life of patients with multiple sclerosis treated with immunomodulators and modulation of immune response in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis. At the end of the study it was observed that electroacupuncture improved in various aspects of quality of life of patients with multiple sclerosis, especially pain, and it was observed that electroacupuncture modifies the immune response in the Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis Experimental. Moreover, the results also suggest that the routine use of a self-assessment of quality of life should be included in regular clinical evaluations of patients

Abstract:
For my PhD thesis I conducted qualitative field research in a Chinese Christian community in Germany for two and a half years. The research was to explore what functions are fulfilled when Chinese students in Germany convert to Christianity. This survey is therefore not considered to be a contribution to the investigation of the reasons for conversion; instead, the approach is a functional one. From this premise arises the assumption that conversion is only one creative coping strategy amongst many in dealing with problems which confront every person. From the observed strategies for solving problems used by the protagonists, conclusions about the corresponding problem areas could be drawn. In this way it was possible to extract the most important motives for conversion.

Abstract:
Chronic pain is one of the main complaints of people with disorders related to the musculoskeletal system; it produces negative impact on the quality of their lives, besides economic and social consequences. Thus, integrative and complementary practices have been used, highlighting auricular acupuncture, in order to reduce chronic painful experience. This intervention consists of an acupuncture therapy technique that works stimulating specific reflex points in the ear, relieving signs and symptoms of various diseases, among them pain. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Chinese auricular acupuncture on chronic pain in people with musculoskeletal disorders in the spine. This is a randomized clinical trial held between June 2015 and March 2016. The final sample consisted of 110 people with chronic pain in the spine, for at least three months, registered on the waiting list of the physical therapy clinic and server’s integrated assistance center at UNIFAL-MG. After the initial evaluation, the participants were divided into three groups through randomization: A treated group (n = 37), which received 05 auricular acupuncture sessions based on the precepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine; a placebo group (n = 36) who underwent auricular acupuncture with stimulation points that did not have any connection with the observation focus; and a control group (n = 37) who did not receive the intervention headset. A trained professional evaluated all participants, in three stages: first (before any intervention); a week after the last session of auricular acupuncture, and 15 days after the second evaluation (follow up). The subject characterization instrument, Brief Pain Inventory, and Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire were used, besides the nociceptive threshold in front of mechanical stimulation’s assessment, carried out with the aid of a digital algometry, and tissue temperature evaluation measured by means of a thermo-graphic camera. Data were analyzed with the intention of treating and the statistical analysis was performed through the following tests: Chi-square, Kruskal-Wallis, followed by the Student-Newman Keuls, when necessary; as well as paired McNemar and Wilcoxon. The results showed that pain severity and its interference with daily activities decreased in the treated and placebo groups during the treatment period and remained the same in the follow-up assessment only for the placebo group. Moreover, auricular acupuncture also provided a significant pain relief in these two groups; however, this decreased in the treated group in the follow up evaluation but stayed the same for the placebo group. There was also a reduction in physical disability, for both treated and placebo groups, being more significant for the treated group, and remained the same in the follow up evaluation for both. Furthermore, there was increased tissue temperature between the final and follow-up assessments for both treated and placebo groups. The control group did not show any significant influence for these variables. The nociceptive threshold in front of mechanical stimulation showed no significant variations. Thus, the effect of Chinese auricular acupuncture is clear in behavioral and physiological parameters of chronic pain in the spine.

The aim of the present study is to evaluate the result of the knee pain treatment using The Opposite Side Technique from the Traditional Chinese Medicine. Thirty-six patients with unilateral gonalgia were studied. 44.44% (16) with osteoarthrosis, 30.55% (11) with patella femural osteoarthrosis, 11.11% (4) with severe osteoarthrosis, 11.11% (4) with patella chrondomalacy and 2.77% (1) with synovial plica. The patients were divided in two groups: Group I (Acupuncture) were eighteen, who submitted to 20 acupuncture sessions, where it was used points of counter to lateral acupuncture to the affected knee and acupuncture points to the distance according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine and to the acupuncture neurophisiologic action standard to select these points for the treatment, and Group II (Phisiotherapy) also eighteen, who submitted to 20 physiotherapeutic sessions and antiinflamatory non steroid (AINS) medicines. According to the results from the statistical analysis, non-parametric, of the subjective data (the intensity of the described pain, difficulty in walking, in crouching, in going upstairs and downstairs, in running, in jumping, in claudicant motion, in making use of some walking support) as the objective parameters ( the restriction of the flexional moviment and also the one of the knee extension moviment, and the arc moviment) showed good results in all the studied parameters. The most refractory parameters were the objective ones above mentioned. The Jue Yin (Liver) energetic channel of the foot showed to be the most affected (22.22%), followed by the associations of the Jue Yin (Liver) and the Tae Yang (Bladder) energetic channel of the foot (22.22%), the Jue Yin (Liver) and the Yang Ming (Stomach) of the foot (16.66%), and the Jue Yin (Liver) and the Shao Yang (Gall Bladder) of the foot (11.11%), and another associations (16.66%). The false-Yang (52.77%) characteristics of disorders were the predominant in relation to the energetic ones followed by the Yin (33.33%) and the Yang (13.88%) disorders of the patients.

Tohti Bughda, Enver. Uyghurs in China: Personal Testimony of a Uyghur Surgeon. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), July 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/creid.2021.010.

Full text
Abstract:
Dr Enver Tohti Bughda is a qualified medical surgeon and a passionate advocate for Uyghur rights. Having been ordered to remove organs from an executed prisoner, Enver has since taken up a major role in the campaign against forced organ harvesting and is determined to bring China’s darkest secret to light. In this personal testimony, Enver shares his experience working as a surgeon in Xinjiang and reflects more broadly on the situation of Uyghurs in China, explaining that unless Uyghurs earn the sympathy and support of China’s Han majority, unless it is understood that all Chinese people are the victims of the same authoritarian regime, ethnic animosity will continue to serve the political purposes of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
