Abstract:
The Romance of the Three Kingdoms (RTK) is a classical Chinese historical novel by Luo Guanzhong. This paper establishes a research framework of analyzing the novel by utilizing coword and cluster analysis technology. At the beginning, we segment the full text of the novel, extracting the names of historical figures in the RTK novel. Based on the coword analysis, a social network of historical figures is constructed. We calculate several network features and enforce the cluster analysis. In addition, a modified clustering method using edge betweenness is proposed to improve the effect of clustering. Finally, both quantified and visualized results are displayed to confirm our approach.

Abstract:
As a basic task of natural language processing, named entity recognition has been applied in the field of Chinese literature. A method can be realized the ancient weapons named entity recognition and association analysis in Chinese historical novels,so this paper puts forward the recognition model and use knowledge mapping analysis. Taking ancient weapons in Romance of The Three Kingdoms as a characteristic entity example constructed a corpus,the BERT-BiGRU-CRF model is built to solve the named entity recognition of ancient weapons based on digital humanities.And the knowledge map is used to analyse the relationship of entities.[Result]The training effect of the combined model BERT-BiGRU-CRF is obviously better than the other four models, and finally the harmonic average F1-score of the ancient weapons’ entities is improved to 88.44%.This method can solve the difficulty of recognizing the ancient weapons of Chinese historical novels, providing reference for the further entity correlation of Chinese historical literature.

The Sleeping Dragon’s Elegy: An Example of Occasional Verse in The Romance of the Three Kingdoms This article examines one example of occasional verse in the classic Chinese novel The Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguo yanyi 三国演义, Luo Guanzhong, 14th century), with a focus on the historical situation in which the poem is placed and the political implications ascribed to it. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a work of tremendous cultural impact. Its retelling of historical events during the late Han dynasty continues to shape the general understanding of this period, regardless of the narrative being widely accepted as fiction based on history. The poem discussed here is one example of fictional occasional verse that highlights the importance of the practice during the period in question as well as during the early Ming dynasty when the novel was written. The novel takes place during a time in Chinese history called the “Three Kingdoms” period when the Han dynasty was falling apart into smaller, independent states. The three states of Wei, Wu, and Shu, their internal struggles and the wars between them, form the centre of the narrative. Crucial to an appreciation of the poem is the Battle of Red Cliff, a naval confrontation that took place in the year 208 AD, when the allied forces of Sun Quan and Liu Bei managed to overcome the otherwise stronger enemy. The battle brought together Shu military strategist Zhuge Liang, the “author” of the poem according to the novel, and the poem’s subject – Wu commander-in-chief Zhou Yu. In 210, upon hearing about Zhou Yu’s early demise, Zhuge Liang decides to attend his funeral despite hostile sentiments among Wu generals. He presents the poem – an elegy retelling Zhou Yu’s life and accomplishments – to persuade the Wu generals of his innocence in the matter of Zhou Yu’s death.

Abstract:
The Ming period is recognized as a period that introduced a new genre to Chinese literature, especially Chinese prose. During this period, novels from the masterpieces of Chinese literature saw the light of day. They are a valuable source for the study of Chinese literary language, as well as providing valuable information on the plot, historical facts, and the Darwin. In particular, the novel "Three Kingdoms", created in the Ming period, has a large volume and a plot rich in sharp turns, the events of the novel are based on the collapse of the Eastern Khanate, in general, various contradictions in public administration, political, military and foreign relations. The diversity in the author’s depiction of contradictions and struggles, the uniqueness in the depiction of each event, demonstrates the writer’s unparalleled artistic skill. In contrast to the "Three Kingdoms", the plot of “Water Margins” is based on the peasant uprisings and struggles; the play depicts the emergence, development and decline of the peasant uprising. The play praises a number of rebellious heroes, most of the protagonists of the work are extremely vivid, and their character is clearly described. The influence of the successful creation of the novels “Three Kingdoms” and “Water Margins” on the creation of historical and heroic novels of the next period is incomparable. The first phase of the Ming period was a turning point in the history of literature. With the end of the Yuan Dynasty (元朝 Yuán cháo 1206-1368) and the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, no other significant works were created during this period, except for two major novels, the Three Kingdoms (《三国演义》) and the River Basins (《水浒传》). It was not until 1465 that there was a renewal in drama and folk poetry.

Artikel ini membahas konsep mistik-romantik pada tragedi bencana meletusnya gunung Krakatau pada novel Drama dari Krakatau karya Kwee Tek Hoay. Novel ini terinspirasi oleh novel Baron Edward Bulwer-Lytton yang berjudul The Last Day of Pompeii yang diterbitkan tahun 1834. Drama dari Krakatau karya Kwee Tek Hoay disajikan dengan konsep realis yakni dengan menampilkan deskripsi meletusnya gunung Krakatau pada tahun 1883. Artikel ini bertujuan menunjukkan konsep tersebut dengan menganalisisnya berdasarkan tataran tanda dalam konvensi novel. Mistik-romantik dalam novel ini dimaknai sebagai peristiwa yang digambarkan dalam perpektif sastrawan atas peristiwa bencana yang terjadi melalui kacamata karya sastra. Meletusnya gunung berapi Krakatau yang menewaskan puluhan ribu orang dan membuat bencana lain tersebut diposisikan sebagai bagian intertekstualitas oleh Kwee Tek Hoay dalam sudut pandang sastra. Sekaitan dengan itu, sastra dapat dipahami sebagai dokumen sejarah yang menggambarkan peristiwa secara jujur. Akhirnya, artikel ini menunjukkan novel Drama dari Krakatau sebagai alat dokumentasi tentang peristiwa bencana dengan balutan romansa cerita khas novel Melayu Tionghoa. Kata Kunci: Krakatau, Kwee Tek Hoay, mistik-romantik, novel, sastra bencana Abstract This article discusses the mystical-romantic concept of the tragedy of the eruption of Mount Krakatau in the novel “Drama dari Karakatau” by Kwee Tek Hoay. The novel was inspired by Baron Edward Bulwer-Lytton's novel The Last Day of Pompeii published in 1834. The drama from Krakatau by Kwee Tek Hoay is presented with a realist concept, namely by displaying a description of the eruption of Mount Krakatau in 1883. This article aims to demonstrate the concept by analyzing it based on the state of signs in the novel convention. The mystics in this novel are interpreted as events depicted in the literati's perspective of catastrophic events that occur through the lens of literary works. The eruption of the Krakatau volcano that killed tens of thousands of people and made another disaster was positioned as part of intertextuality by Kwee Tek Hoay from a literary point of view. Related to it, literature can be understood as a historical document that describes events honestly. Finally, this article shows the novel “Drama dari Krakatau” as a tool for documentation of catastrophic events wrapped in the romance of stories typical of Chinese Malay novels. Abstract:
Being colonized by France, Cocochina (the South of Vietnam) was the region where Western literature was introduced into earlier than the North. Truong Minh Ky was considered the first translator of Western literature in Vietnam. His earliest works of translation appeared in 1884. By the early 20th century, introduced to Vietnamese readers were Western literary works not only of French origin but also of British, American and Russian origins; not only poetry, prose but also drama. In the late 19th century, many writers such as Truong Vinh Ky, Huynh Tinh Cua were interested in Chinese literature. In the first decade of the 20th century, a wide variety of Chinese novels were translated into Vietnamese, forming a strong movement of translating "truyen Tau” (Chinese fictions). The remarkable characteristics of the translation of Western literature in Cochinchina were as follows - The newspapers and magazines in “Quoc Ngu” (Vietnamese language written in Latin characters) where the first works of translation were published played very important role. - The translators were greatly diverse, coming from different social and cultural backgrounds. - More translation was made on prose. Novels of martial arts, historical stories, novels of heroic deeds attracted the attention of the translators and the publishers. Therefore, they were translated much more than romance novels were, because of their compatibility with popular audience. - By translating the works of Western literature, the writers tried to express new concepts of humanism, such as women rights, or gender issues. Translated literature in Cocochina in the late 19th and early 20th centuries reflects a paradox: Western influences started to leave their marks but the Chinese influence was still strongly engraved. However, this was a remarkable step in the journey of modernization of national literature. Through these early translated works, new literary genres were introduced and Vietnamese readers gradually became familiar with them. Translation experiences were the first steps for Cocochina writers to achieve thorough understanding, to learn Western writing techniques and styles, which helped them become the pioneers of new literature in Vietnam.

In the late sixteenth century, thriving private maritime trade brought forth maritime trouble to the late Ming state. In times of rampant “Japanese” piracy and Hideyoshi’s invasion of Korea, Chinese literati composed unofficial histories and vernacular fiction on China’s foreign relations. Among them, Yan Congjian 嚴從簡 wrote Shuyu zhouzi lu 殊域周咨錄 (Records of Surrounding Strange Realms) (1574), He Qiaoyuan 何喬遠 compiled Wang Xiangji 王享記 (Records of the Emperors’ Tributes) (1597–1620), Luo Yuejiong 羅曰褧 penned Xianbin lu 咸賓錄 (Records of Tributary Guests) (1597), and Luo Maodeng 羅懋登 composed a vernacular novel Sanbao taijian xiyangji tongsu yanyi 三寶太監西洋記通俗演義 (Vernacular Romance of Eunuch Sanbao’s Voyages on the Indian Ocean) (1598). This article examines how the imminent maritime realities reminded the late Ming authors of one cross-border war and two genocides in Java and Sanfoqi during Yuan and early and mid-Ming times. These transgressions that violated Chinese official tributary order became memorable and made Sino-Java relations a definite point of comparison for the late Ming maritime piracy problems. This article argues that the cultural memory of Sino-Java military and diplomatic exchange enabled the authors to lament and condemn the executed pirates Wang Zhi and Chen Zuyi. The four authors imbue their narratives with personal anxieties and nationalistic sentiments. While the historical narratives tend to moralize and idealize China’s tributary world order, the vernacular fiction paints a more realistic picture of the late Ming state by involving heterogeneous voices of the “other.” Collectively, the four narratives represent various images of the Ming Empire, revealing the authors’ deep apprehension of the Mings’ identity, their political criticism of the state, and their divergent and even self-conflicted views toward maritime commerce, immigrants, and people of different races.

Abstract:
The author examines The Duke of Stockbridge: A Romance of Shays’ Rebellion (1879), a historical novel written by Edward Bellamy (1850–1898) in order to examine the ethics of Romance in the treatment of historical fiction. Edward Bellamy, most famous for his socialist novel, Looking Backwards (1888), himself looks backwards to examine the popular rebellion during the early post-revolutionary American democracy before the US Constitution was established. The striking feature of this novel is the way that it superimposes the romance genre onto political and historical events. Using the ethical criticism of J. Hillis Miller, Martha Nussbaum, Alasdair MacIntyre, and others, the paper examines the romance genre in relation to virtue ethics to analyze the ethical impulse in Bellamy’s historical novel. To what degree does romance – a literary genre that combines stock characters and stereotypical action – open itself up to analysis in terms of the “virtue ethics” of Nussbaum, MacIntyre, and others? To what degree does an analysis of Bellamy’s novel in these terms allow us to understand what I call the “rhetorical ethics” of a critic like Miller? An examination of the Genteel Literary Tradition prevalent at the time of Bellamy’s novel – as it manifests itself in language and historical representation – allows us to see more closely the relations among rhetoric, character and ethics in the historical novel.

Historical novel translation requires an advanced competence of translator in relation with the translation quality: how accurate, clear, and readable the translator tries to deliver the writer’s original message to his/her translation version for the readers. The more accurate, clear, and readable the translator’s version is, the easier comprehension of the text will be. This paper was an outline of descriptive research which has been conducted to analyze the translation quality assessment in translating historical romance novel Taj: A Story of Mughal India into Taj: Tragedi Di Balik Tanda Cinta Abadi by Maria M. Lubis. There were three variables factors used; the two novels as objective factor, the translator as genetic factor, and the raters as affective factor to analyze, compare, rate, and score the translation quality. The sentences, clauses, phrases that consisted Indian cultural terms from the two novels were chosen as the data. From the analysis, it was found that the translation quality of this translated novel is accurate, high clear, and high readable obviously effected by an eligible translator who has high level competence and performance in translating the novel.Keywords: translation, historical romance novel, accuracy, clarity, and readability. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif yang mengidentifikasi dan menggambarkan penilaian kualitas penerjemahan. Seberapa akurat, jelas, dan terbaca novel terjemahan Taj: A Story of Mughal India menjadi Taj: Tragedi Di Balik Tanda Cinta Abadi oleh Maria M. Lubis. Ada tiga faktor variabel yang digunakan; kedua novel sebagai faktor objektif, penerjemah sebagai faktor genetik, dan tim penilai sebagai faktor afektif untuk menganalisis, membandingkan, menilai, dan memberi angka kualitas terjemahan. Kalimat, klausa, ungkapan-ungkapan yang terdiri dari istilah budaya India dari kedua novel dipilih sebagai data. Dari analisis tersebut, ditemukan bahwa kualitas terjemahan novel yang diterjemahkan ini akurat, sangat jelas, dan mudah dibaca, yang dipengaruhi oleh kepakaran dan kompetensi kinerja dalam menerjemahkan novel tersebut. As one of the Four Great Classic Novels of Chinese literature, Romance of the Three Kingdoms found its way to the constellation of World Literature via translation and being adapted into the movie Red Cliff (2008) and famous video games series Dynasty Warriors (1997-now). This process further made the story of the Three Kingdom is widely known as many cinemagoers and gamers can associate themselves with the story in the form that they adore. Both processes, however, have disadvantages as they erase the Chinese cultural elements that are demonstrated in the novel. This novel is also heavily riddled with patriarchal paradigm that makes scholars consider Romance of the Three Kingdoms masculine novel by portraying women in a very weak position in Chinese society. This paper would try to dissect the issues of translation and women portrayal in detail by analyzing the translated work of Romance of the Three Kingdoms to see what cultural aspect that is disappear as a result of translation and dissecting the dismissive and derogative portrayal of several women characters in the novel.Keywords: Luo Guanzhong, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Feminism, World Literature

Abstract This article focuses on Walter Scott’s Waverley and its classification as the founding text of the historical novel by Georg Lukacs. The author attempts to show that Lukacs takes Scott too much at his word and posits Waverley in the tradition of the English historical novel as it developed from Defoe and Fielding, while neglecting the close ties that Waverley has with marginalized genres such as romance. The author also argues that rather than being an expression of class consciousness, Waverley is an attempt to justify a certain change in political attitude, from radicalism to conservatism

It shows that in the passage from the traditional historical novel to the “historiographic metafiction” this kind of character loses its representative force and it becomes less important in the narrative. Wang Tao (1828–97) was a late Qing translator, political commentator, and fiction writer who spent time in England, France and Scotland, and served as an important literary link between China and the West. In examining Wang’s tales of Sino-Western encounters and drawing from the long literary tradition of depicting foreign “Others,” this paper shows that Wang’s image of the West in his literary tales is ambivalent. Further, it argues that Wang’s gender positioning of the Chinese “Self” and Western “Other” is rather ambiguous. By interpreting his representation of the West against his immediate historical context (e.g., a China facing unprecedented political and cultural challenges), this study investigates Wang’s use of various rhetorical strategies from an existing discourse on foreign “Others” (particularly the theme of “foreign woman marrying Chinese man”) to appropriate, domesticate and even contain the West. It also shows how Wang complicates and even subverts these older rhetorical strategies as a way to cope with the new historical reality.

In this paper, we aim to analyze Memórias de Aldenham House, written by Antonio Callado. Antonio Callado emphasizes the representation of the symbolical violence resulting from truculent practices held by Latin American dictators after the World War II. The novel is, then, perceived as a post-traumatic memory writing of Latin American history.

Nonetheless, if read without taking the romantic historical novel as a paradigm, the perception is different. AbstractThis article examines the representation of surveillance in Claude McKay’s Romance in Marseille and the influence of surveillance on the novel’s aesthetics. It uses McKay’s 1929 novel Banjo as a prior representation of Marseille that establishes the historical constraints under which characters in Romance navigate the social world of Quayside, the city’s international working-class quarter. The article argues that McKay depicts an important moment in which state and corporate actors create networks of transnational surveillance that aim at securing an advantageous global distribution of labor for capital. McKay’s novel examines the mechanisms through which surveillance controls the mobility of racialized and gendered bodies, and depicts the strategies of resistance that such characters deploy more and less successfully against these often-violent mechanisms.

History has often become the inspiration for writers, as it has for Isa Kamari in the case of his novel Satu Bumi ( One Earth ) (1998). What were the historical sources for this author, and how were they employed in his fiction? What was the author’s aim in fictonalizing these historical sources? These are the questions that receive attention in this paper. Using a historical approach and textual analysis, the historical facts found in the novel Satu Bumi and the author’s aims behind fictionalizing them are examined in this study. The study finds that the novel Satu Bumi is based on the history of Malaysia and Singapore, and fictionalizes the historical events using elements of romance and drama. However, even in this romantic and dramatic setting, the historical elements used do not merely serve to record the history of Malaysia and Singapore but are also employed to predict the future of the Malay community in Singapore. It is an alarming state due to the island state’s physical development and a political situation that could be deemed racist, apart from the attitude of the Malay community itself. The story of Jack Sheppard, a jailbreaker hanged for theft in 1724, inspired William Harrison Ainsworth in 1839 to write a historical romance chronicling and fictionalizing Sheppard's exploits. Though first published in a middle-class magazine, Ainsworth's serialization of Sheppard's career in Jack Sheppard: A Romance (1839–1840) subsequently caused a sensation among lower-class audiences for whom the novel was not originally intended. The wide dissemination of Sheppard's story among the lower classes in ballads, songs, cheap plagiarisms, and theatrical performances created a moral panic for contemporary middle-class critics who were concerned with the implications of such material in lower-class culture. Thus, despite the novel's initial reception in the middle-class press as another pleasant and harmless romance, it soon became reviled as a source of inspiration for would-be Jack Sheppards everywhere.

This article is informed by sociological approaches to translation in order to discuss the prefaces and introductions in both English and Portuguese of Save me the Waltz, Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald's only novel, written and published in 1932. We first analyze the author's identity such as it was built in her original literary system – an identity that is mostly negative, cemented in Harry T. Moore's preface to the 1968 English edition. Then, we discuss the preface to the Brazilian translation published in the 1980s, considering the historical context surrounding the book's production. Our aim is to determine to what extent the Brazilian preface, written by Caio Fernando Abreu, differs from Moore's interpretation and the North-American criticism the novel received upon publication in the 1930s.

Based on the analytical theories of the historical novel listed byFLECK (2017), AÍNSA (1991) and BASILE (2002), in this paper we propose a reading of the novel ¡Bernabé!, ¡Bernabé!, by Tomás de Mattos. This starts from the problematization done about the historical event officially known as “The Massacre of Salsipuedes”. We seek to offer analytical tools for the interpretation of the novel based on the deconstruction of the character Colonel Bernabé Rivera, the commander who was the responsible for the mission that resulted in the murder of the natives Charruas during the independence process of Uruguay in the 19th century. From the reading we make of the novel, we aim to relate the interpretation of this work by Mattos (1994) to possible criticism concerning the civic-military dictatorship that ruled the country between 1973 and 1985.

ABSTRACT This article, based on Bakhtin’s studies, focuses on the historical novel genre and its particularities. The route is based on the concept of chronotope, representing the inseparability of time and space. The materiality of analysis is the novel Verde Vale (1979), by Urda Alice Klueger. The analysis carried out highlights the chronotope of transmigration as a figure that underlies the historical narrative; it unfolds into two subordinate themes: the threshold and soil chronotopes, symbolizing the movements observed in the narrative construction of the novel. Linked to these chronotopic representations, the theme of the soil, which implies rooting and also refers to the origin, allows the expansion of the analysis bringing the phenomena of toponymy and anthroponymy closer together, worked as memory and identity events.

At present, most researches of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms focus on its English translation and its communication in a certain country, especially concentrated in neighboring countries or regions surrounding China, such as Thailand, Japan and so on. In order to provide researchers with a comprehensive and systematic review about its spread and impact, this research intends to investigate the current communication situation of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms in various countries from three aspects of communication form, communication strategies and communication effect. Then it is found that the overseas communication of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms has diversified forms and various communication strategies, but there are still some deficiencies and problems in the process of overseas communication. In order to solve these problems, this paper puts forward corresponding suggestions from the perspectives of "communicator", "communication content" and "communication channel", with an aim to provide some reference for the overseas communication of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Eduardo Mendoza's City of Marvels recuperates the historical novel while subjecting it to the conventions of romance. These generic strategies relate to the manifest self-made man's rise to economic might between the two Barcelona World's Fairs and Barcelona's development as a modern metropolis—and to a later celebration: the 1992 Olympic Games. The depiction of the adventures of capital and the production of marvels responds to the bourgeoisie's role in Spain's modernization and to money's mediating function as a symbol of desire. The accomplishment of marvels involves the conquest of time and the substitution of illusory timelessness for historical contingencies. Timelessness mediated by money negates history through the production of ersatz historical images, which reinscribe an idealized past as the object of desire. A restoration—the figurative replication of historical events—is the response to nostalgia for a missed historical opportunity by a subject seeking myth's illusory power.

The article aims to discover the Chinese cultural codes in the novel "Forty Years of Changzhoe" by the modern Russian writer D. Lipskerov. The research adopts historical-cultural and hermeneutic methods. The article concentrates on defining the function of Chinese allusions in the plot structure of the novel. The central mythological and cultural concept in the novel is the image of the “chicken” and the “chicken invasion”, which reproduce the eschatological plot in a profane form. The images of the "chicken" and the "rooster", fixed under a common hieroglyph, have a sacred meaning in Chinese culture and serve as a key to the interpretation of the main scenario in the novel. The composition of the plot is largely determined by historical and cultural subtext. The author concludes that allusions to Chinese culture are not accidental and do not serve only for ornamental purposes: they deepen the plot perspective and set the mythological foundation for the core motifs of the novel.

We also attempt an investigation of the formation of female subjectivity as illustrated by these fundamentally feminine novels, given that all four of them operate with female protagonists, women in the process of shaping their destinies, often at crossroads where - despite all the external factors that seem to determine their fate from history to social conventions and men around them - ultimately they make their own personal choices and position themselves as responsible, active and creative subjects.

Procura-se demonstrar como a prática antiquária serve de enquadramento ficcional para uma expansão do conceito de verossímil. Por meio do conjunto de procedimentos metodológicos do antiquário e de sua aproximação com a prática jurídica da época, elementos fantásticos que seriam inverossímeis passam a ser aceitos na trama do romance gótico. Estes elementos, por fim, abrem espaço para a experiência do sublime, de modo que o uso de procedimentos de prova e a escrita ficcional estavam intimamente ligados. </p><p><strong>Palavras-chave</strong>: Antiquariato; Romance gótico; sublime. </p><p><strong>Abstract</strong>: This paper seeks to study the interrelation between antiquarian practices and the gothic novel in eighteenth-century England. It tries to show how antiquarianism provides a fictional framing for an expansion of the concept of verisimilitude. Because of the methodological procedures developed by the antiquarian and their rapprochement with the judicial practices of its time, fantastical elements that would be otherwise discarded as implausible are accepted in the gothic novel. Novels, of any time, carry certain stories related to reality. The earlier forms of the Novel, Allegory and Romance, contained religious, philosophical facts. These literary genres took the shape of Novels, which continue to carry moral, philosophical and historical truths. George Meredith, a Victorian novelist, defined Novel as the ‘summary of actual life’. According to William Henry Hudson, an English writer, Novel is an effective medium of the portrayal of human thoughts and actions. The English word, Novel derived from the Italian term, Novelle, which means ‘a fresh story’. It was in 1350 that the Italian writer, Giovanny Boccassio, wrote his world famous collection of love stories in prose, named Decameron. Such stories in prose were called ‘novelle’ and a story in verse was known as ‘romance’. It meant a story of the legendary past. Malory’s Morte d’Arthur is an example. Some experts gave various definitions for a ‘Novel’. According to an American novelist, F. Marion Crawford, a Novel is a pocket theatre; a novel contained all accessories of a drama without requiring to be staged before an audience. George Meredith, an English novelist, called it a ‘summary of actual life’ including both ‘the within and the without’. According to W.H Hudson, Novel is an effective medium of the portrayal of human thought and action, ‘combining in itself the creations of poetry, the details of history and generalised experience of philosophy’.

Abstract:
Focusing on the Gothic trope of the discovered manuscript, this essay examines Ann Radcliffe's representations of the past in The Romance of the Forest ( 1791 ). Radcliffe's third Gothic novel is set in seventeenth-century Roman Catholic France, but was published in the immediate aftermath of the French Revolution. The narrative follows the plight of its orphan heroine, Adeline, who finds herself taking refuge in a ruined abbey located in a gloomy French forest under the protection of Pierre de la Motte (a Frenchman fleeing Paris with his family). During her stay, Adeline enters a secret room and unearths a decaying manuscript. From this point onwards, the narrative is interspersed with fragments of the script, which records the harrowing experiences of someone who was murdered there many years ago. Concentrating on the manuscript and Radcliffe's utilisation of the Burkean sublime for historical purposes, this paper contends that The Romance of the Forest can be read as a complex response to shifting notions of history engendered by the outbreak of the French Revolution. What does Radcliffe's representation of the script reveal about the past and to what extent are her historical attitudes shaped by the culturally chaotic events of the early 1790s?

It is now twenty years since the publication of Jamie O’Neill’s At Swim, Two Boys (2001). O’Neill’s novel was not the first Irish novel to depict same-sex passion, and not even the first Irish gay novel of the post-decriminalisation period. However, it did attain a wider and higher level of recognition among mainstream Irish, and international, readers. This may have been at least partly due to O’Neill’s decision to write a historical romance – a genre which still retains its enduring appeal for readers. By adapting this genre, O’Neill uses fiction to unearth, and imaginatively recreate, an archaeology of same-sex passions between men in revolutionary Ireland. As such, his novel speaks powerfully to a yearning to make the silences of history speak and is motivated by the belief that, as Scott Bravmann puts it in a different context, ‘lesbian and gay historical self-representation – queer fictions of the past – help construct, maintain and contest identities – queer fictions of the present.’ Revisiting O’Neill’s novel now – after two decades of remarkable social change for Ireland’s LGBT communities, and after almost a decade of national commemoration of the revolutionary period – is a timely opportunity to reflect on the relationship between history, fiction and how we imagine sexual liberation. The Medieval Roots of the Modern NovelIn this article, Jørgen Bruhn has a double target for his investigations. Firstly, he aims at distinguishing between two different historical models for the novel genre: on the one hand, a ‘short’ history which claims that the modern novel was born in the Renaissance. A ‘long’ history, on the other hand, asserts that the novel has a history going back not only to the middle ages but even antiquity. M.M. Bakhtin is a main contributor to a ‘long’ history of the novel, and in order to justify the use of Bakhtinian ideas in the study of the medieval romance, Bruhn points to the crucial insights of Bakhtin’s texts regarding the medieval romance.In the second part of the article Bruhn goes further into a specific romance, Chrétien de Troyes’ Erec et Enide from the second half of the 12th century. There are strong elements of metafictionality, a budding understanding of the social determination of human existence and a clear and sophisticated reflection on generic conventions, including the medieval tendency of referring to oneself as only a mediator or scribe. Therefore, Bruhn concludes that Chrétien’s romances in many ways can be characterized as an early expression of what Bakhtin usually called novelness, and that Chrétien himself must be characterized a modern »author«.

From its various beginnings in the nineteenth century and ever since the rise of print capitalism on the Indian subcontinent, the Urdu novel has become a prime medium of expression for writers seeking to fuse the narrative traditions of both the East and the West. As a hybrid genre which took shape during the nineteenth century, the Urdu novel's early beginnings were associated with the theme of historical romance; this eventually gave way to the influence of realism in the first half of the twentieth century. By and large, the Urdu novel incorporates influences encompassing the fantastical oral storytelling tradition of the dastan or the qissa (elaborate lengthy heroic tales of adventure, magic and honour), the masnavi (a form of narrative poem), Urdu grammars, religious pamphlets and journals, and the European novel.

The Notebook, American novelist Nicholas Sparks’ first romance novel, was published in 1996 and adapted into a movie in 2004 for $115 million box office worldwide. This study selects the original works and Chinese translation for contrastive research. Based on Andre Lefevere’s rewriting theory, this study makes an in-depth analysis of the difference of Ideology and Poetics between the two versions, and explores the reasons for favor from Chinese readers under the influence of ideology and poetics. This study comes to the following conclusions: in terms of ideology, the influence of social ideology on the translator and translator’s understanding of characters have led to language differences between two versions. From the perspective of Poetics, the terms of the original English text are relatively simple and easy to understand, while Chinese translators use a large number of allusions, folk adages and rhetorical devices to arouse interest. A contrastive analysis of two versions from the perspective of rewriting theory provides a completely new perspective for translation studies of novels. Translation studies are no longer confined to the linguistic level, but to the macro level such as culture and society.

In today’s new media environment, more and more communication contents have been digitized. Also because of digitization, traditional media and new media, which were previously well-defined services, have now merged, media fusion. In the age of media fusion, communication systems are updated more rapidly and more and more novels are being adapted into TV series. Literary education in ancient China has a long history and has played an important role in the development and dissemination of the ancient Chinese literature. Literary education refers to an educational behavior in which the educator and the educated acquire knowledge, enrich emotional experience, and obtain aesthetic pleasure through the reading, explanation, and acceptance of literary texts and then cultivate language ability and cultivate spirituality. There are many factors that promote the classicization of ancient Chinese fiction works. This thesis examines the relationship between fiction education and the classicization of ancient Chinese fiction works. The experiment shows that there are still many problems with the reading of ancient Chinese novels today; the number of respondents who have an average interest in reading ancient Chinese novels accounts for 51%, and only 12% have a high interest in reading. In terms of the choice of reading content, 16% of the students focus on reading literary masterpieces, 70% are inclined to reading young adult literature and campus literature, and 14% prefer to read romance martial arts novels, popular science books, and newspaper publications, etc.

Abstract This essay adopts a semiotic perspective focused on practices of communication, movement, and translation to examine the global impact of A. J. Greimas (1917–1992) and his oeuvre. The linguist and semiotician’s lecture trips abroad, the number and provenance of international students in his Paris seminar, and the chronology and linguistic geography of translations of his work help describe, gauge, and explain the dissemination and development of his ideas throughout the world. His project has engendered distinctive appropriations and at times productive institutional structures in a number of cultural and linguistic contexts, notably Romance, Anglo-American, Germanic, Russian, Lithuanian, and Chinese. The broader historical relations between France and other lands, and the extent of each society’s use of the French language have conditioned, fostered, or impeded responses to his proposals. The conclusion’s discussion of the relative importance of personal contacts, socio-historical context, and the sociolinguistic and pedagogical status of French for his international reception aims to contribute to general methodological debates in the history of science and ideas and in transnational history.

Polysyllablization, closely related to phonetics, semantics, and syntactics, is one of the fundamental trends in the development of Chinese lexis. However, with lots of uncertainties in the historical evolution of Chinese language, the quantitative modeling and reconstruction of polysyllablization remain open questions. Based on theComprehensive Dictionary of Chinese Words, a mapping from the words to their time of occurrence is built. With the inverse mapping on random samples, the newly produced words with different numbers of syllables in different time periods are obtained. Finally the total quadratic variation minimization model is adopted to estimate the trend of polysyllablization. As a novel exploration in the computational linguistics, the results agree with the stage division of historical Chinese and answer some difficult questions related to polysyllablization in a quantitative manner.

We have studied on the conversional Meclanism, the exchanges and interactions and the influence of translating activities of Chinese historical novels on compasing activities of Vietnamese historical novels, especially the literature of the southern of Vietnam in the early years of the 20th century.

Este romance traz em seu enredo dois importantes fatos históricos ocorridos no final do século XIX: a Abolição da Escravatura, em 1888 e a Proclamação da República, em 1889. O tratamento literário dado pelo autor aos fatos, imprimindo irrelevância aos mesmos no contexto do enredo, revela que para ser Realista ‘à brasileira’, naquelas circunstâncias específicas, era necessário mostrar o curso da História tendo como base a ausência de transformação.</p><p><strong>Palavras-chave</strong>: Machado de Assis – <em>Esaú e Jacó</em> – História do Brasil.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Abstract: </strong>This paper intends to analyze the special way Machado de Assis builds the representation of Brazilian historical facts in the novel <em>Esaú e Jacó</em>. This novel brings in its plot two important historical events that happened in the late Nineteenth century: the Abolition of Slavery, in 1888; and the Proclamation of the Republic, in 1889. AbstractChina’s leading Muslim writer, Zhang Chengzhi, published in 1991 an historical novel about a Sufi Islamic community, entitled The History of the Soul. The novel covers the two hundred years leading up to 1919, the year of the May Fourth Movement that is conventionally considered as the beginning of modern Chinese history. During this period, the Sufi community that is the subject of Zhang’s novels, called the Jahriyya, was involved in a series of violent clashes with the Qing imperial state. The author weaves through his historical narrative of a Chinese spiritual community the story of his own spiritual crisis, which he underwent in the 1980s and finally overcame through his encounter with the Jahriyya.
