Hymn singing occupies a very important position in a Christian’s life. However, can the Chinese Christians get a full understanding of the function of hymns within a worship service, by singing their lyrics? Does the message of the hymns truly and precisely express the beliefs held by the congregations? The answers to these questions are the author’s greatest concern. The author is motivated to study this topic eagerly in this thesis because the author wishes to know whether a church music minister is able to stimulate the function of these Chinese hymns through the choosing of appropriate hymns for their church congregations. The author utilizes Content Analysis to analyze and generalize the first volume to the sixteenth volume of the Hymn Series from “The Stream of Praise Music Ministries .” Through cataloguing and organizing the songs into various classifications, the author discovers the significance and value of the theological tendencies within the lyrics of the songs. The author’s wish for the study is for it to provide positive and multiple suggestions to the hymn writers, in order for the hymns to be more diverse and complete, to meet the needs of the Church. The results of statistical analysis have “The Christian Life—Consecration,” “The Christian Life—Trust and Commitment” and “God the Father—Love” as the three categories with the highest rate of occurrence, as found in the songs from “The Stream of Praise Music Ministries.” The author discusses the lyrics of the songs which are included in those three categories. Furthermore, the author examines the theological topics of the hymns, by focusing on the songs within those three categories. Besides the discussion of the lyrics of the hymns found in the “Stream of Praise Music Ministries ,” the author also compares these songs with traditional hymns of the same subject. Through the process of comparison, one can see the deep theological content and beautiful rhetoric of the traditional hymns, while simultaneously discovering the beauty found in the combination of contemporary hymns and real life, as wel l as in its colloquial presentation. Finally, the author suggests actively selecting modern and traditional hymns in order to maximize the respective strengths of the two hymn types and complete the functions of Church Music. Furthermore, the involvement of church music ministers and pastors will greatly promote the implementation of the function of worship and help believers to further experience the faith.

Since 1948, six decades have past while looking back on the history of using hymnals in Taiwan Baptist Church. During this period, the hymnal New Songs of Praise released in 1973 had been in use for the longest time. In anticipation of the changing needs of the new century, Chinese Baptist Press decided to republish a new hymnal Century Praise in 2001. First, this study explores the history of editing the hymnal Century Praise while also structurally examining it. Secondly, this study surveys the 46 Chinese hymns in Century Praise’s entire collection of 461 hymns, in an attempt to analyze their lyrical and tonal origins via classifying them into four categories such as hymns of Chinese-wrought tune, Chinese-wrought lyrics, Chinese-wrought lyrics and tune, and adaptation-from-folksong melody. Finally, this study also comprehensively examines whether theses Chinese hymns in Century Praise possess specific tendencies, styles or functions, along the dimensions of lyrics, tune, and the relationship between lyrics and tune.

Christianity has been called “a singing religion,” with the singing of hymns being an important element of Christian worship dating back millennia. Partly thanks to translation, many hymns have been passed down from generation to generation, a practice that continues to the present day. Among the hymns sung in contemporary Chinese language churches, a large portion come from translations of works that are European or American in origin. Despite this, research focused on the translation and revision of hymns in the latter half of the 20th century remains scarce. In particular, very few studies have compared different versions of specific hymns as they has been translated and revised over the years. To present a greater understanding of the translation and revision of contemporary Christian hymns in Chinese, this paper examines 25 hymns common to three hymnals published by the Chinese Baptist Press: New Hymns of Praise (1941), New Songs of Praise (1973) and Century Praise (2001). Using principles of song translation drawn from previous research, similarities and differences both between the different translations and with the original hymns will be explored. Additionally, the hymns will be analyzed through the lens of modern translation theories, including constrained translation and functional theory. Finally, the musical and textual properties and functions of the individual hymns will be dissected as they relate to the process of translation and revision.
