Full textThis thesis focuses on the Influence of Chinese management soft power on African skills development. The fundamental research question is: how were Africans who studied in China influenced by Chinese soft power? Have they developed managerial skills like Chinese managers or entrepreneurs? To answer these questions, the first article offers a synthetic perspective of the works done on China-Africa between 2014-2015. Based on this literature review, Chinese investments in Africa, the actors, and motivations, mode of entry, impacts and management challenges were analyzed in the light of theories in international management. This review offers new perspectives for exploring Chinese investments in African countries and contributes to the body of knowledge on Sino-African relations. In the second article, due to the growing integration of the two regions, a comparison of managerial practices between China and African countries was made. The purpose of this article is to facilitate this understanding through a critical analysis of the literature. Based on our analysis, some similarities and divergences related mainly to management foundations, managerial styles, networking and entrepreneurship were identified. The third article analyzes, through acculturation theory, the influence of Chinese culture on the managerial practices of Africans trained in China. Based on multiple linear regression, this article analyzes not only the effect of acculturation on the development of entrepreneurial capacities but also the moderating role of networking on the different on acculturation. As for the last article, it makes it possible to identify the managerial and entrepreneurial capacities developed by Africans during their stay in China. Using an interpretive methodological approach and based on the Soft Power theory, the themes that emerge from the cognitive repertoire of African managers and that reflect the capacities developed are: network development, risk-taking, optimism and pragmatism. The results of this study provide new perspectives for the exploration of Chinese soft power in Africa. They show that China does not only influence through aids, investments, economic model, etc. but it also inspires many countries due to its management ideas known as Chinese Management Soft Power. Keywords: managerial practices; soft power; African management; Chinese management; knowledge transfer; entrepreneurship, capacity building, cultural adaptation; investments.

Foodborne illnesses are a challenge, especially in ethnic restaurants partly because of differences in food handling practices and ethnic cultures. Chinese restaurants, representing the largest number of ethnic restaurants in the U.S., have unique food safety challenges. This study investigated variables including Chinese cultural values (CCVs) that influence U.S. Chinese restaurateurs’ behavioral intention regarding food safety training. The qualitative study, individual interviews with 20 Chinese restaurateurs, found 17 major CCVs that are important to participants. Most participants felt satisfied with previous health inspections, but several expressed difficulty with understanding health inspectors’ instructions and the reports. A limited number of participants provided food safety training mainly because it was required by law. Lack of money, time, labor, energy, and perceived needs for food safety training were major obstacles to providing food safety training in Chinese restaurants. The quantitative study assessed behavioral intention to provide food safety training and the influencing factors including CCVs using the instrument developed based on the qualitative study. Sample included 500 Chinese restaurateurs across the U.S., and 261 provided usable data. Among 17 CCVs, respondents perceived “courtesy” (6.95±0.24), “respect” (6.87±0.47), and “harmony” (6.85±0.41) as most important. The opinions of customers (5.74±1.71), family members (5.73±1.60), and business partners (5.49±1.57) were considered most important. Barriers to providing food safety training included employees’ physical exhaustion (5.89±1.58), employees’ learning capabilities (4.80±1.97), and financial resources (4.56±2.19). Of five CCV factors identified, CCVs pertaining to customer relations (β=0.133, p<.05) and interpersonal relations (β=0.320, p<.001) were significantly associated with behavioral intention to provide food safety training. Additional factors influencing food safety training intention were, personal influence (Fchange=3.98, p<.05), perceived barriers (Fchange=6.42, p<.05), and past experiences (Fchange=21.78, p<.001). Among participants, the males (t =2.97, p<.05) valued customer relations, whereas the females (t =5.52, p<.001) valued interpersonal relations. Chinese restaurateurs with bachelor’s degrees or higher (F=5.905, p<.01) had greater intentions to provide food safety training than others. Manual-based food safety training (6.17±1.23) in Chinese (6.13±1.33) was preferred by the respondents. Future research should evaluate if recommendations from this study have positive influences on food safety training at Chinese restaurants.

Full textLinguistic determinism has prompted one of the earliest discussions about the connection between language and thought. This link has been further refined through the identification of cultural values playing a determinative role on the basic stage of thought formation, which is one of the fundamental aspects of language ideology. Such findings have sparked the hypothesis that cultural influences, in the form of cultural values as measurable means, should be recognized in or connected to words, even to those that belong to previously uninvestigated areas, such as new Internet words. The methodology of qualitative content analysis as well as a quantitative study applied to a sample of new Chinese Internet words and expressions has demonstrated that the influence of Chinese cultural values on them is identifiable to a significant extent. The cultural values either directly affect the words in their original or new meaning or have an influence on the Internet words indirectly, in their usage. Furthermore, it is argued that such connections between the researched Chinese cultural values and the meaning or usage of the collected new Chinese Internet words and expressions are not only to be strictly categorized into direct and indirect influences but should be considered in a broader sense. Despite some words and expressions originating from other languages and cultures, the influence of Chinese cultural values should still be acknowledged since it is through these that words are able to integrate into the Chinese language.

The interaction between superiors and subordinates is one of the most important research questions in organization behavior studies. Since lacking formal authority, subordinates often use influence tactics to change their superiors’ behaviors and reach their purposes, called “upward influence” Most previous studies usually use upward influence tactics found in western literature as their framework, and test in Chinese organizations. Some researchers are getting aware of the cultural difference and the possible influence on the usage of upward influence tactics. However, we still have very little understanding about the framework of upward influence tactics in Chinese organizations. Comparing with western culture, Chinese culture appears to be higher power distance, relationship-oriented and more strategy –oriented. Therefore, this study tries to find out the unique upward influence tactics in Chinese organization. Following the inductive approach, the study used open questionnaire survey to collect the upward influence events in work organization, which is used by Kipnis(1980). In total, we collected 60 available samples and66successful upward influence tactics. These tactics can be integrated into three categories, and eleven influence tactic. The first category is direct tactics, including rational persuasion, presenting fact, and soft persuasion. The second category is asking help from third party, including asking help from expert, asking help through relationship, coalition and upward appeal. The third category is Indirect ask tactics, including acting according to timing, throwing a stone to clear the way, ostensible obedience and throwing a brick to get a gem in return. Comparing with western literature, direct tactics are common used in both Western and Chinese organization. Asking help through relationship reflects the relationship-orientation characteristic in Chinese society. Besides, due to high power distance and strategy-thinking influence culture, indirect tactics are the special phenomenon in Chinese organizations, which shows the complication of interpersonal interaction in Chinese society. Presently, China is the most populated country in the world. Its population has reached 1.26 billion in 2000-more than one fifth of the worldwide population. As a result, the outcome of China’s population policy has become an issue of global concern. However, China has been swung back and forth on its "birth control" policy in the past fifty years. During 1971~1998, when Chinese government enforced the "one child" policy, the birth rate has effectively reduced the population growth by 338 million, and a saving of a total of $74 zillion dollars for the government and the people. The society also benefits on: (1.) less pressure and competition on the employment ; (2.) more educational resources for the people ; (3.) more improvement on health condition ; ( 4.) a promotion of social status for women ; (5.) better distribution of other resource and preservation of the environment. The downsides from the practice of the "one child" policy are: (1.) a syndrome from the [4-2-1] family structure ; (2.) aging of the population; (3.) difficulty in discipline the single child of the family; ( 4.) inappropriate gender ratio ; (5.) reverse selection of population quality ; (6.) difficulty in military draft ; (7) inferior outplays in athletic performance ; (8) confliction between birth control administration officers and the general public. Based on the research, three population policies China may adapt in the future. To be qualified to have two children, A) For families in both villages and cities, allow parent who were both from single child families to have a second child. However, this scheme has the least impact with a predict population of 1.38 billion in 2010. In the long term, the low rate of birth will create a peak population of 1.55 billion followed by a negative population growth after 2040. B) For families in both villages and cities, parents who were either or both from single child family are allowed to have a second child. However, this scheme has most impact with a predict population of 1.388 billion in 2010. In the long term, the low rate of birth will create a peak population of 1.59 billion followed by a negative population growth after 2045. C) For families in cities, parents who were both from single child families, and for families in villages, parents who are either or both from single child family, are allowed to have a second child. However, this scheme has the mediate impact with a predict population of 1.377~1.388 billion in 2010. In the long term, the low rate of birth will create a peak population of 1.55~1.59 billion followed by a negative population growth after 2040~2045.

This research is to investigate the outpatients’ service utilization influence factors of the Chinese medicine medical treatments. The “Gap5” in the "PZB" model and “the first stage of healthy behavior model” proposed by Andersen were combined to measure medical service quality. The Rresults showed that female patient's ratio is obviously higher than male, and the patients’ age concentrated in 30 to 60 years old. Most of patients’ educations are colleges or above, and occupations are housekeepers or service industries. The main reasons to take Chinese medicine medical treatments are to cure common diseases and next to body recuperations. The outpatients were divided into two groups-- “rational emotion” and “emotional approval. These two groups are satisfied with the service qualities and have high willing to accept continual treatments; most outpatients would recommend their colleagues and friends to accept the medical treatments if necessary. However, the hospital is to be highly expected to keep improving the service qualities. The major factor for all outpatients is “ to collect exterior information and to decide to accept Chinese medicine”. “Rational emotion” group would collect information from medical websites and the recommendations from friends or colleagues. “Emotional approval” group would collect information from news media, personal experiences, or medical specialties and the disease needs. Outpatients were unsatisfied with “time waiting before treatment” and “delayed complain responses”.

Chinese people have been ill reputed for lower ethical standard for years, especially the piracy, and legislation would have a very limited impact on those behaviors of buying and using counterfeit products. Since many thinkers believe that it may be the key to understand morality through cultural differences in moral rules. Therefore, this study tries to understand the ethical judgments of Chinese consumers with the influence of Chinese culture. This study conducted the Hunt-Vitell model to examine the ethical judgments of Chinese consumers. According to the influence of Chinese culture, the consumers tend to be lack of social morality in public sphere. In the findings, it showed that Chinese consumers tend to adopt relativistic philosophy in forming their ethical judgments. However, Chinese consumers are unacceptable of arguable consumer practices in a public retail business. The implications for marketers, policy makers, and researchers are provided in this study.

This dissertation compares some isomorphic words by using a Chinese corpus, Academia Sinica Balanced Corpus of Modern Chinese, and a Japanese corpus, Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese. These words analyzed in this paper are Japanese loanwords in Chinese. They are examined and compared mainly from the perspectives of part of speech and transitivity of verbs. The results show some differences as well in some of these isomorphic words between Chinese and Japanese. Based on these differences in terms of part of speech and verb transitivity, 17 isomorphic words were selected and 28 Chinese sentences were made in order to test native Japanese speakers’ judging ability about isomorphic words used in Chinese. 51 subjects were surveyed in this research. All of them were Japanese native speakers who were studying or have studied Chinese. 14 subjects were categorized as elementary level learners of Chinese, 14 were intermediate level learners, and 16 were advanced level learners. The results of this survey indicate that the differences in part of speech in some isomorphic words between Japanese and Chinese have interfered with learners’ correct use of these isomorphic words in Chinese. The results also show that the differences in transitivity in isomorphic words have caused learners’ misjudgement about grammatical use of these words in Chinese because the transitivity differences widen the gaps in syntactical structures between the two languages. When Japanese native speakers learn Chinese, it is necessary for them to know the differences and similarities in isomorphic words between the two languages in oder to avoid negative transfers from Japanese.

"Creativity" is one of important part of human behavior. From the individual ability of problem-solving, the development of technology updating to the social-cultural and Organizational reform and innovation have so much close relationship with creativity by human being. Whether in a corporate or learning environment, the ability of creativity is always an important factor which influences if problem solved smoothly, job done well or not. Creativity and innovation activities are developed by people who accomplish a specific job or task at specific time and space. Therefore, when studying "innovation" and "creativity", it is necessary to start this study from human being. The purpose of this study was to explore how the special social-cultural characteristics impact Chinese people, their thinking patterns and personality, innovative behavior creating, and how gender differences affect the performance of innovative behavior. This study divided Chinese personality into 7 types- "aggressive and self-control", "seeking truth from facts", "enthusiasm and friendly", "suspicious mind", "gentle and easy-going", " kindness" and "smart and sharp" .It explores how personality and gender differences impact innovative behavior. The results were as follows: "Suspicious mind" and "kindness" type of personality has a negative correlation with the impact of "innovative behavior", but the impact is not obvious; "aggressive and self-control " type, "seeking truth from facts" type, "enthusiasm and friendly" and "gentle and easy-going" type of personality has a significant positive correlation with the impact of "innovative behavior"; And "smart and sharp" type of personality has a positive correlation with the impact of "innovative behavior", but not significantly affected. Among them, the "aggressive and self-control" type of personality is the most innovative ones, the next ones followed are "enthusiasm and friendly" type, "seeking truth from facts" and "gentle and easy-going" type of personality. This study aimed to explore the influence of Chinese homophone density on spoken word recognition by behavioral and event-related potentials approaches. Since previous studies have demonstrated that orthography might affect the core processes of spoken word recognition. The goal of the present study was to investigate the how and what information of visual/orthography will make influence on Chinese spoken word recognition. In Chinese, there are many single-character words that are homophones. The number of homophones was defined as homophone density in the present study. Thus, we used two different tasks to demonstrate the influence of Chinese homophone density on spoken word recognition. Experiment 1 was auditory decision task, we manipulated homophone density in two conditions (high or low). For reaction time, the facilitation effect of Chinese homophone density was observed in this experiment: reaction times were faster for high homophone density. Experiment 2 was auditory semantic categorization task. In this task, participants were asked to decide whether each item was “Animal name”, we manipulated homophone density in two conditions of no trials. For reaction time, the inhibition effect of Chinese homophone density was observed, which was opposite to finding of experiment 1. In experiment 3, event-related potentials approach was adopted to examine the time course of homophone density effect on spoken word recognition. We adopted the same paradigm as experiment 2 to record EEG signal. The goal of this experiment was to investigate different cognitive processes in different time course. In summary, this study has demonstrated that Chinese homophone density effect on spoken word recognition process, which provides the strongest evidence of on-line activation of visual/orthography during Chinese spoken word recognition.
