Abstract:
Contemporary Samoan society is a reflection of a number of different cultures and influences. As a result of several attempts at colonisation by the British, German and New Zealand Administrations the cultural landscape of Samoa has been influenced by many different groups and peoples. As a result of integration and assimilation into the Samoan way of life the Chinese have been accepted into Samoan society and have contributed to the development of Samoan culture and identity. This thesis explores the history of the Chinese in Samoa as a method of uncovering the true extent of the influence played by the Chinese, both as a people and as a nation, in the make-up of Samoan society. It uncovers the roles and impacts of the Chinese in the island nation from the first Chinese arrivals in the late 19th century, through various political administrations and into the present day. The thesis will illustrate the importance of the Chinese in Samoa and how they have contributed to, and helped to shape, the Samoan people, politics, culture, identity and economy. This thesis explains the importance of the Chinese in Samoa by examining important events in Samoan history in the past 150 years. Such events include the forbidding of Chinese settlement in Samoa through the Malietoa Laupepa Law of 1880, the establishment of the Chinese indentured scheme, and the ‘new wave’ of Chinese aid being poured into the Pacific, including Samoa, in recent times.

Zhou, Tongyu. "Influence on contemporary Chinese printmaking." Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2006. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.427117.

Full text
Abstract:
The aims of this thesis are to identify the influences on contemporary Chinese Printmaking (1990 - 2002) from China's tradition and the influences from contact with the West. This thesis begins with a history of Chinese printmaking which is based on material collected from published literature and museums. This history started with the Tang dynasty (618AD-907AD), and goes up to the various economic, cultural, political and military influences of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It is shown that printmaking has been particularly affected by these wider social changes. The main empirical study focused on the nature and direction of recent changes in printmaking, notably in style, artistic development and economic purpose. It was conducted through video-taped interviews, with artists, and owners of studios and galleries in China. Those interviews were structured around questionnaires which asked about the purpose, forms and markets in printmaking practices and operations. The data were analysed by identifying the main themes in the transcripts, and written up as case studies. These are in three sections: artists, studios and institutes, and galleries. Finally this contemporary research was linked back to issues which emerged during the initial historical review. The major conclusions are: 1. Contemporary Chinese Printmaking bears mixed influence. The major influences come from western contemporary culture and there are also degrees of influence from Chinese revolutionary and traditional cultures. 2. Contemporary Chinese printmaking is in a process of transformation. The model examined in this thesis is in the process of change to a contemporary model which can interact with the market economic system, but how close it will get to the western contemporary model is still not clear. 3. Contemporary Chinese Printmaking is developing in a context of cultural change which features the confrontation between the market economy system, the remains of a planned economic system, and some resurgence of traditional culture. The author concludes with the hope that the continuing influence of traditional and revolutionary culture in this modernising society may lead to a new era of printmaking which will integrate and balance uniquely Chinese elements with modern Western approaches

Abstract:
I will consider the Influence of Chinese mathematics on Seki Kowa. For this purpose, my thesis is constructed in four parts, introduction, I the studies of editions; Shu. Shu. Jiu Zhang and Yang Hui Sum. Fa, II the conception and extension of method for making magic squares, and III the analysis for solving indeterminate equations. In the introduction, I will explain some similarities between Chinese mathematics in the Song dynasty and Seki Kowa's works. It will become clear that the latter was influenced by Chinese mathematics. Then I introduce some former opinions concerning which Chinese mathematical book influenced him. I shall show that two Chinese mathematical books, Shi Shu. Jiu Zhang and Yang Hai Suan Fa, are particularly important. Some Chinese mathematical books were republished and studied by Japanese mathematicians, but these two books were not accessible to Japanese mathematicians. Thus we must study them for considering questions of influence. I will consider two subjects, the treatment of magic squares in Yang Hui Suan Fa in chapter H and the method of solving indeterminate equations in Shu Shu Jiu Zhang in chapter III. Before considering the contents of these subjects, we must know more about the available versions of these two books in chapter I, otherwise we cannot know whether Seki Kowa could have obtained them. It seems certain that Seki Kowa studied the Yang Hui Sum Fa, but I cannot know whether he studied the Shu Shu Jiu Zhang. However, Seki Kowa's method of solving indeterminate equations is very similar to that of Qin Jiushao, especially when their methods of changing negative constants into positive are similar. Thus I would like to propose that Seki Kowa studied the Chinese method of solving indeterminate equations.

Abstract:
Theoretical models of parenting that explain parenting behaviors (e.g., Belsky's (1984) model) generally lack consideration of cultural variables among various ethnic groups, particularly Chinese Americans. One such concept is guan that literally means training (Chao, 1994) (or called training parenting attitude in the present study). Moreover, literature has shown that acculturation and family socioeconomic status significantly influence parenting attitudes and behaviors pertaining to various forms of punitive parenting, namely, authoritarian parenting, corporal punishment, and child physical abuse among the Chinese American population. The training parenting attitude (as a culture-specific parenting attitude) and disciplinary belief (as a traditional parenting attitude) are taken into consideration in the proposed theoretical models of parenting for Chinese Americans. One hundred and seventeen Chinese American mothers who have at least one child in the age range of 4 to 12 years old participated in this study. Structural equation modeling was used to test viable models of punitive parenting. Results indicated that the originally proposed primary model was incorrectly specified. The primary model was then respecified and re-estimated by eliminating the unreliable measures and correlating between the error terms of some observed variables. Consistent with the theory of planned behavior, results indicated that Chinese American mothers with favorable attitudes toward authoritarian parenting were more likely to engage in authoritarian parenting behavior. However, neither acculturation nor family socioeconomic status was found to significantly influence either parenting attitudes or behaviors pertaining to authoritarian parenting. Discriminant function analysis was performed to predict thelevels of engagement (i.e., presence or absence) in corporal punishment and physical abuse from a set of predictors. Findings revealed that only the discriminant function for corporal punishment was significant. Authoritarian parenting and disciplinary belief were found to be the most significant predictors of the levels of engagement in corporal punishment.Further research is needed to explore the predictors for the engagement in authoritarian parenting, corporal punishment, and child physical abuse among the Chinese American population. In addition, professionals should interpret parenting behaviors in terms of the cultural meaning of Chinese American parents. Finally, the limitations of the present study include the lack of access to a diversified sample, self-report bias, low reliabilities of some measures, and the weaknesses of structural equation modeling along with discriminant function analysis.

Abodohoui, Alexis. "Influence of Chinese management soft power on African skills development." Doctoral thesis, Université Laval, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11794/36633.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the Influence of Chinese management soft power on African skills development. The fundamental research question is: how were Africans who studied in China influenced by Chinese soft power? Have they developed managerial skills like Chinese managers or entrepreneurs? To answer these questions, the first article offers a synthetic perspective of the works done on China-Africa between 2014-2015. Based on this literature review, Chinese investments in Africa, the actors, and motivations, mode of entry, impacts and management challenges were analyzed in the light of theories in international management. This review offers new perspectives for exploring Chinese investments in African countries and contributes to the body of knowledge on Sino-African relations. In the second article, due to the growing integration of the two regions, a comparison of managerial practices between China and African countries was made. The purpose of this article is to facilitate this understanding through a critical analysis of the literature. Based on our analysis, some similarities and divergences related mainly to management foundations, managerial styles, networking and entrepreneurship were identified. The third article analyzes, through acculturation theory, the influence of Chinese culture on the managerial practices of Africans trained in China. Based on multiple linear regression, this article analyzes not only the effect of acculturation on the development of entrepreneurial capacities but also the moderating role of networking on the different on acculturation. As for the last article, it makes it possible to identify the managerial and entrepreneurial capacities developed by Africans during their stay in China. Using an interpretive methodological approach and based on the Soft Power theory, the themes that emerge from the cognitive repertoire of African managers and that reflect the capacities developed are: network development, risk-taking, optimism and pragmatism. The results of this study provide new perspectives for the exploration of Chinese soft power in Africa. They show that China does not only influence through aids, investments, economic model, etc. but it also inspires many countries due to its management ideas known as Chinese Management Soft Power. Keywords: managerial practices; soft power; African management; Chinese management; knowledge transfer; entrepreneurship, capacity building, cultural adaptation; investments.

Suh, Hee Seung, and Hee Seung Suh. "The Acquisition of Locative Phrases in Chinese and L1 Influence." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/626328.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aims to investigate how second language (L2) learners’ first language (L1) affects the acquisition of locative phrases in Chinese by examining the performance of L2 Chinese learners with different L1s (L1 English and L1 Korean learners). Locative phrases in Chinese introduced by preposition zài ‘at’ can occur in two positions in a sentence: between a subject and a verb (preverbal position); after a verb (postverbal position). A preverbal locative phrase indicates the general location where an event happens. However, a postverbal locative phrase occurs with restrictions (Li and Thompson, 1981; Liu, 2009) and carries a distinctive semantic function indicating the location where an action ends up (Fan, 1986). These characteristics of locative phrases in Chinese cause difficulties for L2 learners. In the field of Chinese as Second Language or Foreign Language, the preposition zài ‘at’ is the most frequent preposition, but it also incurs the most errors among learners’ usage (Ding and Shen, 2001; Zhao, 2000). It has been assumed L1 Influence is the main contributing factor (Cui, 2005; Ding and Shen, 2001), but to date relatively little empirical research has been done. The present study compares the performance between two L1 groups. The participants were studying Chinese as a foreign language in the US and in South Korea respectively. Three experiments were conducted: a grammaticality judgment, a picture-meaning match, and an open-ended short essay. The grammaticality judgment experiment was designed to investigate how learners’ L1 affects their judgment of grammaticality; the picture-meaning match experiment explored learners’ knowledge on meaning differences between preverbal and postverbal locative phrases; the open-ended short essay experiment examined L1 influence on the use of locative phrases in learners’ writings. Performance of the participants was compared in three ways, following the methodology suggested by Jarvis (2000): within each L1 group (intra L1 group), between L1 English and L1 Korean (inter L1 group), and between each learner group and the NS group (inter L1 group congruity). Results show that L1 influence is significant only when there is a mismatch between L1 and L2. The results confirm that preverbal locative phrases are acquired earlier than postverbal locative phrases, regardless of learners’ L1. Possible factors that may affect the acquisition sequence of Chinese locative phrases were also discussed. This study also finds evidence of avoidance (Laufer and Eliasson, 1993) in the usage of postverbal locative phrases among L1 Korean learners.

Foodborne illnesses are a challenge, especially in ethnic restaurants partly because of differences in food handling practices and ethnic cultures. Chinese restaurants, representing the largest number of ethnic restaurants in the U.S., have unique food safety challenges. This study investigated variables including Chinese cultural values (CCVs) that influence U.S. Chinese restaurateurs’ behavioral intention regarding food safety training. The qualitative study, individual interviews with 20 Chinese restaurateurs, found 17 major CCVs that are important to participants. Most participants felt satisfied with previous health inspections, but several expressed difficulty with understanding health inspectors’ instructions and the reports. A limited number of participants provided food safety training mainly because it was required by law. Lack of money, time, labor, energy, and perceived needs for food safety training were major obstacles to providing food safety training in Chinese restaurants. The quantitative study assessed behavioral intention to provide food safety training and the influencing factors including CCVs using the instrument developed based on the qualitative study. Sample included 500 Chinese restaurateurs across the U.S., and 261 provided usable data. Among 17 CCVs, respondents perceived “courtesy” (6.95±0.24), “respect” (6.87±0.47), and “harmony” (6.85±0.41) as most important. The opinions of customers (5.74±1.71), family members (5.73±1.60), and business partners (5.49±1.57) were considered most important. Barriers to providing food safety training included employees’ physical exhaustion (5.89±1.58), employees’ learning capabilities (4.80±1.97), and financial resources (4.56±2.19). Of five CCV factors identified, CCVs pertaining to customer relations (β=0.133, p<.05) and interpersonal relations (β=0.320, p<.001) were significantly associated with behavioral intention to provide food safety training. Additional factors influencing food safety training intention were, personal influence (Fchange=3.98, p<.05), perceived barriers (Fchange=6.42, p<.05), and past experiences (Fchange=21.78, p<.001). Among participants, the males (t =2.97, p<.05) valued customer relations, whereas the females (t =5.52, p<.001) valued interpersonal relations. Chinese restaurateurs with bachelor’s degrees or higher (F=5.905, p<.01) had greater intentions to provide food safety training than others. Manual-based food safety training (6.17±1.23) in Chinese (6.13±1.33) was preferred by the respondents. Future research should evaluate if recommendations from this study have positive influences on food safety training at Chinese restaurants.

Medvedeva, Natalia Gennadievna. "Influence of cell environment on micronucleation in Chinese hamster ovary cells." Texas A&M University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/2790.

Full text
Abstract:
The irradiation of cells in culture is an essential part of many radiation biology experiments. Since these experiments necessarily involve the irradiation of cell culture vessels and nutrient medium, the possibility of effects due to the interactions of irradiated material with growing cells needed to be investigated. In the present study the micronucleus frequency in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells as a function of such parameters as type of radiation, type of cell substrate, changes in cell environment, and time course of the effect were characterized. Observations of the persistence of micronucleus formation in irradiated CHO cells reveal that the number of cells containing micronuclei reaches its maximum within nine hours after irradiation and remain elevated for at least five days. The influence of the cell environment on micronucleus formation in CHO cells was examined by plating cells in preirradiated nutrient medium or on preirradiated cell culture vessels. In all experiments, pre-irradiation of the cell substrate (the culture dish or culture dish filled with medium) led to a significantly higher micronucleus frequency than when cells were plated on un-irradiated substrate. The difference is most pronounced at the lowest doses examined. These results suggest that methods of cell culture vessel sterilization and the composition of cell attachment surfaces could be confounding factors, particularly in the experiments which are intended to examine the response of cells exposed to low doses of ionizing radiation.

Abstract:
Social media is developing rapidly and China has become the largest market of social media usage. Due to numerous international social media platforms being unavailable in China, Chinese consumers have different usage and attitude of social media from those in other countries. According to previous studies, consumers’ usage and attitude of social media can be different due to their gender. Due to these two factors, it is interesting to study gender differences in attitudes toward social media in a Chinese context. By using questionnaires, data are collected from students in Shanghai, China. By applying SPSS, analysis of the results shows that Chinese online consumers basically have positive attitude toward using social media and positively think social media influence them. Most of Chinese respondents spend more than 1 hour on social media daily. Generally speaking, Chinese consumers use social media in order to communicate with others and search for different events. As to gender difference, Chinese women are more likely to follow a famous person by using social media than men. Both men and women use Wechat and Weibo the most frequently.

Abstract:
Guided by Uses and Gratifications Theory, this study investigated the relationship between Chinese college students' use of social media and their social activism. Data collected from a goup-administered survey of 309 undergraduate students at a large university in eastern China was used to answer four research questions. The results indicated that Chinese college students who used social media for information seeking were likely to participate in individual social activism. Besides, students who used social media for self-status seeking and information seeking were likely to participate in collective social activism. No significant correlation between entertainment motivation and social activism were found. Neither can socializing motivation predict Chinese college students' social activism. In addition, gender had an impact on individual social activism and frequency of social media use could affect both individual and collective social activism.

In the author’s view culture plays an important role in the international business. Cultural issues represent the key factors for a successful cooperation and partnership among companies from different countries. Most of the time the adaptation to a new culture and new governmental policies influence the foreign companies in the direction of changing their business strategy. This thesis is a cross-cultural research study that aims to examine the cultural struggles of some Italian companies established in China. In particular, based on the collection of qualitative data obtained by the conduction of four interviews the study identifies three main influencing elements of the Chinese culture and the way they induce the Italian companies to adapt their business strategy. The study’s most important findings are: guanxi and mianzi influence the Italian business strategy in networking building in China and affect the Italian psychological attitude in the business management and organization. In revealing more short-term thinking in Chinese business circles the findings of the study contrast Hofstede’s theory of a long-term orientation in China.

Abstract:
Linguistic determinism has prompted one of the earliest discussions about the connection between language and thought. This link has been further refined through the identification of cultural values playing a determinative role on the basic stage of thought formation, which is one of the fundamental aspects of language ideology. Such findings have sparked the hypothesis that cultural influences, in the form of cultural values as measurable means, should be recognized in or connected to words, even to those that belong to previously uninvestigated areas, such as new Internet words. The methodology of qualitative content analysis as well as a quantitative study applied to a sample of new Chinese Internet words and expressions has demonstrated that the influence of Chinese cultural values on them is identifiable to a significant extent. The cultural values either directly affect the words in their original or new meaning or have an influence on the Internet words indirectly, in their usage. Furthermore, it is argued that such connections between the researched Chinese cultural values and the meaning or usage of the collected new Chinese Internet words and expressions are not only to be strictly categorized into direct and indirect influences but should be considered in a broader sense. Despite some words and expressions originating from other languages and cultures, the influence of Chinese cultural values should still be acknowledged since it is through these that words are able to integrate into the Chinese language.

Abstract:
The suicide and the media research field are generally concerned with the effect, content, and production of mass-disseminating suicide information. Most of the previous studies in the field were conducted in western countries. This dissertation is devoted to extending the research map to the Chinese contexts and moving the field forward into the new media era. It proposes a conceptual framework based on the social construction of reality theory and refines the framework through a combination of five studies. Study 1 might be the first investigation on mass-disseminating suicide information’s effect on suicide occurrences in Mainland China, using the Foxconn suicides as a case study. It finds that the Foxconn suicides were temporally clustered and influenced by inter-person contagion within the company, as well as the newspapers’ reporting about the topic in Beijing, the nation’s capital. Study2 examines the prominence and representation patterns of reporting the Foxconn suicides in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan in 2010 calendar year. It demonstrates that the media coverage of the Foxconn suicides in the three societies generally experienced a three-phase evolving process in 2010. Meanwhile, within every phase, the media in different societies showed differences in their representations. Furthermore, the study investigates how the representation can be influenced by news sources and social contexts and explores possible explanations why the Beijing media’s reporting influenced the occurrences of the Foxconn suicides. Study3 compares representation of suicides in case-control psychological autopsy studies with representation of the same suicides in Hong Kong media. Considering the psychological autopsy as relatively more rigorous and validated, the comparison examines the suicide news representation’s accuracy and stereotyping tendencies. It finds a strong homogenisation of the Hong Kong newspapers in accurately reporting suicide methods but inaccurately reporting suicide risk factors, and that their reporting was problematic in stereotyping of gender-and method-specific suicides. Study 4 is a qualitative study of 33newspaper journalists’ experiences with producing suicide news from representative daily newspapers in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Utilising the grounded theory method, it extracts how the journalists construct media reality of suicide within a social context. The study summarises criteria of suicide news values, identifies three types of key agents which are often engaged by the journalists in constructing suicide news, and also generates a comparative framework of suicide news production in the Chinese contexts. Study 5 examines what suicide-related information is easily accessible online in Mainland China and Hong Kong and compares it with its counterparts in English. It explores how the comparative framework proposed by Study 4 can also be applied to understand the nature of the online suicide information and serves as a bridge connecting the thesis with future studies on suicide and the new media. The five studies collectively contribute to understanding the nature and mechanism of constructing media reality of suicide in the Chinese contexts. By applying the research findings, suicide prevention professionals would be able to develop context-sensitive strategies to cooperate with the media and prevent suicide.

Abstract:
Three major trends are evident in Chinese ink painting: academic reformism, modernism and neo-traditionalism. While reformists are calling for stylistic freedom and a return to humanism, modernists seek the adoption of Western modes of thought and practice to develop and reform Chinese tradition. The new literati painting which has seen a resurgence of innovative theory and technique of an indigenous Chinese painting tradition distinguishes neo-traditionalism. Many scholars believe that developments in Chinese painting represent a decline in the history of Chinese art but, in this authors’ opinion, this has been a period of transformation in aesthetic conception and expression. Chinese ink painting, which is still the dominant stream in twentieth century Chinese art and a continuation of its development, can be seen in the work of many contemporary artists. It is more than likely that the pluralism in contemporary Chinese art discussed in this thesis will continue although the forms it takes will to some extent be determined by political and economic factors. It is unlikely that contemporary Chinese art will totally reject the established cultural and aesthetic systems and establish a new one, based on the Western system. The traditions of Chinese culture remain strong, and it appears much more probable that an internal ‘re-shaping’ of both indigenous and imported elements will result in an artistic tradition that remains distinctively ‘Chinese’ as well as contemporary

Abstract:
Historically, Chinese immigrants to the United States are a special group. They were or almost were banned from 1882 to 1968. Since in 1968 the United States abolished national origin quotas and eliminated national, race, or ancestry as a basis for immigration, thousands of Chinese immigrants came to the United States. The total population of Chinese immigrants to the US between 1980 and 2002 was 911,220, whereas it was 136,843 between 1891 and 1979. Not only did the population of Chinese immigrants have great change, the quality of Chinese immigrants also had substantial difference from those immigrated in the last century. However, there are very limited literatures focusing on the dynamics of Chinese immigration in these twenty years, which is the most important time period for Chinese immigration. The following study tries to describe the dynamics of Chinese immigration to the United States between 1980 and 2002; and analyze the influence of the American immigration laws on Chinese immigration. The dynamics of Chinese immigrants are described and analyzed by different migration categories. Other social and economic factors are added to comprehensively understand the change of Chinese immigration.

Abstract:
Abstract Title: Influence of Cultural Difference on Self Employment: Chinese people living in Gävle, Sweden. Level: Final assignment for Master Degree in Business Administration Author: Ruihan Lei, Xi Chen Supervisor: Ehsanul Huda Chowdhury Examiner: Maria Fregidou-Malama Date: 2014-09 Aim: This study aims to analyse the influences of cultural differences on self-employment for Chinese people in Gävle, Sweden. The study further discusses the opportunities for Chinese entrepreneurs to do business in Gävle, Sweden. Method: We used qualitative approach as our research method. We focused on one to one interview as the tool for data collection. Eight respondents were selected as there are only eight Chinese entrepreneurs running 10 businesses in Gävle, Sweden at present. Result & conclusions: The individual factors influence more on the decision making of being self-employed, especially the family, age, and education background factor. Furthermore, the risk taking attitude and the ability of information collecting can also impact the self-employment success. Cultural differences are not exactly a hinder for the entrepreneurship of self-employment, but rather are perceived as an opportunity by the respondents. Suggestions for future research: This study was restricted to geographical limitation. It will be better if future research can concentrate on the relationship between problems and opportunities for studies in the field of cultural differences in other locations and other countries. Contribution of the thesis: This study shows how cultural difference impact self-employment from individual perspective and environmental perspective. It fills the gaps of related literatures; it is a detailed study of cultural influences on Chinese self-employed people living in Gävle, Sweden. It is helpful for Chinese who want to do self-employment in other countries, by understanding which specific factors to take into consideration in the process of conducting self-employment to succeed. Bing, Shi. "Influence of employment-related institutions upon employees' attitudes in Chinese state-owned enterprises." Thesis, London South Bank University, 2010. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.570871.

Full text
Abstract:
Based on the theories in institutionalism, social psychology and culture, this research has developed a theoretical model to determine the influence of the Chinese employment related institutions upon employees’ attitudes towards employment process. In terms of recruitment, dismissal/redundancy, wage setting, promotion, welfare and workplace rights protection, the research has qualitatively analyzed two main Chinese employment-related institutions—the social and working identity systems. Between different social and working identity holders in the Chinese state-owned or state-holding enterprises, the research has quantitatively analyzed the significant differences of employees’ attitudes towards the employment process. With the use of the research model, the influences of the Chinese employment-related institutions on employees’ attitudes have been determined. The research has found that the Chinese employment-related institutions set employees’ social and working identities as qualifications or standards for the employment process in state-owned/holding enterprises, causing considerable positional differences between different social and working identity holders. The positional differences cause the differences of experiences and actions between these employees, consequently resulting in significant attitudinal differences towards the employment process between them. This research mainly has the following original contributions. First, it contributes to the theory development in the field of human resource management, which fills the gap between institutionalism and social psychology. Second, the research academically contributes to the insight into the Chinese employment-related institutions and their influences upon the Chinese employees in the arenas of Chinese institutions, human resource management and industrial relations. Finally, it can guide the policies and practices of human resource management in practice. In particular, the research findings can be valuable references to the present Chinese institutional reforms in term of minimizing the positional and benefit gaps between different social and working identity holders.

Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Företagsekonomiska institutionen, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-235678.

Abstract:
With the continuous exploration of Chinese market’s potential, this promising and enormous market is becoming more and more crowded no matter in which industry. For example, in home furnishing industry, although the world leader - IKEA strived to implement its differentiation and cost leadership strategies that had brought tremendous success in the other markets worldwide, the company’s performance in this distinctive developing country had not progressed much, unlike other parts of the world. Thus, there must be some factors that foreign companies ignored, which led to this situation. That how Chinese think, what exactly trigger them to buy? There is little research on home furnishing industry regarding those questions inside Chinese market. In this article, through observation of the consumer behavior of Chinese people in the home furnishing industry, and focusing on the “mianzi” factor in Chinese consumer behavior, with a quantitative research method, to examine possible correlations with “mianzi” gaining. After a detailed linear regression through SPSS with data collected from 309 candidates both online and offline, the result shows that price and noticeability of home furnishing are key factors that let the Chinese consumer gain “mianzi”; further, lead to competitive consumption and conspicuous consumption, rather than the brand of the furniture.

Fan, Hui-Mei. "Developing orthographic awareness among beginning Chinese language learners: investigating the influence of beginning level textbooks." Diss., University of Iowa, 2010. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/496.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study is based on the theoretical assumptions that frequency of characters and their structural components, as well as the frequency types of structural components, are important to enable learners of Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) to discover the underlying structure of Chinese characters. In the CFL context, since reliable target language input is limited largely to textbook materials and teacher instruction, it is important to more rigorously examine the inventory of Chinese characters that is typically presented in CFL textbooks. The purpose of this study was to systematically describe and classify Chinese characters from ten CFL textbooks designed for college and adult beginning learners. The main focus was to compare the textbooks in the following areas: explicit orthographic decomposition instruction, character frequency selection, radical combination frequency, radical semantic transparency, radical positional regularity among different character graphic structures, phonetic element reliability, and phonetic component combination frequency. To accomplish the analysis required for this study, a special character database was created. Dictionaries were used to classify character characteristics, and documented frequency lists were used to classify the character usage frequency. The findings revealed that most textbooks rarely include explicit orthographic decomposition instruction in the vocabulary lists or lessons, while over 40% of the characters in most of the textbooks did not combine with other characters to form words. In addition, analysis of frequency lists created over time revealed that the ten textbooks generally contain many high frequency characters. Furthermore, the results indicated that 60% of the characters in the database were classified by relatively few radicals (17%), with most radicals appearing on the left side of the characters. Relatively reliable phonetic analogy groups appeared frequently. About half of the characters are semantic-phonetic compound characters. Less than 10% of the characters in the textbooks are semantic-phonetic compound characters that contain semantically transparent radicals and reliable phonetic elements. The results of the study suggest that textbook writers should consider integrating orthographic decomposition and component frequency materials into their textbooks, as systematic instruction in textbooks is generally lacking. Teachers should also be mindful of emphasizing the high frequency characters that are consistently featured in all textbooks, as well as the frequently appearing radicals and left-right internal structure of many of the characters. In this way, students will early on develop a firm foundation of the principles governing Chinese orthography.

Abstract:
This research study examines the influence of travel and tourism in formulating cultural identity within the Sarawakian-Chinese community, with a special focus on travel to the People‟s Republic of China (PRC), the 'ancestral homeland'. Given the nature of this study, an interpretive paradigm that is informed by the use of a qualitative methodology was employed. In keeping with this research paradigm, interpretive ethnography was utilised to investigate how the Sarawakian-Chinese understand their sense of 'Chineseness' based upon their tourism experiences to China. The research enquiry also includes researcher reflexivity as part of the research process, as the identity of the researcher is significant in this study that investigates the identity of her 'own' people. The findings of the research suggest that the Sarawakian-Chinese perceive China as being significant in constructing their ethnic identity. It is also apparent that there is a commonality of being 'Chinese', however the extent of this association varies by characteristics of age, education, religion and language. Within this association there is also an element of 'pick and mix' of culture, which was observed during the field visit to China, as members of the group evaluated different aspects of Chinese culture. The research study concludes that the experiences of the Sarawakian-Chinese in China highlighted their similarities and differences to the Chinese identity. It is evident that although all Sarawakian-Chinese feel themselves to be at least Chinese in an essentialist context, their degree of 'Chineseness' is affected by Sarawak culture, especially religion and education. They also make a clear distinction between Sarawak as 'home' and China as the 'homeland' with their travel and tourism experiences have served to highlight their sense of hybridity of being Sarawakian-Chinese.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the impact that Chinese aid and investment has on the political economy of resource-rich African countries. In particular, it examines the effects of Chinese resource-for-infrastructure agreements on the political economy of the resource curse. Using Ghana as a case study, this thesis highlights the peculiar obstacles that countries face with regard to managing their resources. In turn, it argues that general prescriptions against the resource curse, such as resource revenue transparency initiatives, like the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, are insufficient. As a result, African recipients of Chinese aid require specific institutional arrangements that accurately reflect the specific “rules of the game” that exist under their respective political economies. In the case of Ghana, this thesis argues that vetting Chinese resource-for-infrastructure agreements through the Public Procurement Act serves that need.

The interaction between superiors and subordinates is one of the most important research questions in organization behavior studies. Since lacking formal authority, subordinates often use influence tactics to change their superiors’ behaviors and reach their purposes, called “upward influence” Most previous studies usually use upward influence tactics found in western literature as their framework, and test in Chinese organizations. Some researchers are getting aware of the cultural difference and the possible influence on the usage of upward influence tactics. However, we still have very little understanding about the framework of upward influence tactics in Chinese organizations. Comparing with western culture, Chinese culture appears to be higher power distance, relationship-oriented and more strategy –oriented. Therefore, this study tries to find out the unique upward influence tactics in Chinese organization. Following the inductive approach, the study used open questionnaire survey to collect the upward influence events in work organization, which is used by Kipnis(1980). In total, we collected 60 available samples and66successful upward influence tactics. These tactics can be integrated into three categories, and eleven influence tactic. The first category is direct tactics, including rational persuasion, presenting fact, and soft persuasion. The second category is asking help from third party, including asking help from expert, asking help through relationship, coalition and upward appeal. The third category is Indirect ask tactics, including acting according to timing, throwing a stone to clear the way, ostensible obedience and throwing a brick to get a gem in return. Comparing with western literature, direct tactics are common used in both Western and Chinese organization. Asking help through relationship reflects the relationship-orientation characteristic in Chinese society. Besides, due to high power distance and strategy-thinking influence culture, indirect tactics are the special phenomenon in Chinese organizations, which shows the complication of interpersonal interaction in Chinese society. Presently, China is the most populated country in the world. Its population has reached 1.26 billion in 2000-more than one fifth of the worldwide population. As a result, the outcome of China’s population policy has become an issue of global concern. However, China has been swung back and forth on its "birth control" policy in the past fifty years. During 1971~1998, when Chinese government enforced the "one child" policy, the birth rate has effectively reduced the population growth by 338 million, and a saving of a total of $74 zillion dollars for the government and the people. The society also benefits on: (1.) less pressure and competition on the employment ; (2.) more educational resources for the people ; (3.) more improvement on health condition ; ( 4.) a promotion of social status for women ; (5.) better distribution of other resource and preservation of the environment. The downsides from the practice of the "one child" policy are: (1.) a syndrome from the [4-2-1] family structure ; (2.) aging of the population; (3.) difficulty in discipline the single child of the family; ( 4.) inappropriate gender ratio ; (5.) reverse selection of population quality ; (6.) difficulty in military draft ; (7) inferior outplays in athletic performance ; (8) confliction between birth control administration officers and the general public. Based on the research, three population policies China may adapt in the future. To be qualified to have two children, A) For families in both villages and cities, allow parent who were both from single child families to have a second child. However, this scheme has the least impact with a predict population of 1.38 billion in 2010. In the long term, the low rate of birth will create a peak population of 1.55 billion followed by a negative population growth after 2040. B) For families in both villages and cities, parents who were either or both from single child family are allowed to have a second child. However, this scheme has most impact with a predict population of 1.388 billion in 2010. In the long term, the low rate of birth will create a peak population of 1.59 billion followed by a negative population growth after 2045. C) For families in cities, parents who were both from single child families, and for families in villages, parents who are either or both from single child family, are allowed to have a second child. However, this scheme has the mediate impact with a predict population of 1.377~1.388 billion in 2010. In the long term, the low rate of birth will create a peak population of 1.55~1.59 billion followed by a negative population growth after 2040~2045.

This research is to investigate the outpatients’ service utilization influence factors of the Chinese medicine medical treatments. The “Gap5” in the "PZB" model and “the first stage of healthy behavior model” proposed by Andersen were combined to measure medical service quality. The Rresults showed that female patient's ratio is obviously higher than male, and the patients’ age concentrated in 30 to 60 years old. Most of patients’ educations are colleges or above, and occupations are housekeepers or service industries. The main reasons to take Chinese medicine medical treatments are to cure common diseases and next to body recuperations. The outpatients were divided into two groups-- “rational emotion” and “emotional approval. These two groups are satisfied with the service qualities and have high willing to accept continual treatments; most outpatients would recommend their colleagues and friends to accept the medical treatments if necessary. However, the hospital is to be highly expected to keep improving the service qualities. The major factor for all outpatients is “ to collect exterior information and to decide to accept Chinese medicine”. “Rational emotion” group would collect information from medical websites and the recommendations from friends or colleagues. “Emotional approval” group would collect information from news media, personal experiences, or medical specialties and the disease needs. Outpatients were unsatisfied with “time waiting before treatment” and “delayed complain responses”.

Chinese people have been ill reputed for lower ethical standard for years, especially the piracy, and legislation would have a very limited impact on those behaviors of buying and using counterfeit products. Since many thinkers believe that it may be the key to understand morality through cultural differences in moral rules. Therefore, this study tries to understand the ethical judgments of Chinese consumers with the influence of Chinese culture. This study conducted the Hunt-Vitell model to examine the ethical judgments of Chinese consumers. According to the influence of Chinese culture, the consumers tend to be lack of social morality in public sphere. In the findings, it showed that Chinese consumers tend to adopt relativistic philosophy in forming their ethical judgments. However, Chinese consumers are unacceptable of arguable consumer practices in a public retail business. The implications for marketers, policy makers, and researchers are provided in this study.

This dissertation compares some isomorphic words by using a Chinese corpus, Academia Sinica Balanced Corpus of Modern Chinese, and a Japanese corpus, Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese. These words analyzed in this paper are Japanese loanwords in Chinese. They are examined and compared mainly from the perspectives of part of speech and transitivity of verbs. The results show some differences as well in some of these isomorphic words between Chinese and Japanese. Based on these differences in terms of part of speech and verb transitivity, 17 isomorphic words were selected and 28 Chinese sentences were made in order to test native Japanese speakers’ judging ability about isomorphic words used in Chinese. 51 subjects were surveyed in this research. All of them were Japanese native speakers who were studying or have studied Chinese. 14 subjects were categorized as elementary level learners of Chinese, 14 were intermediate level learners, and 16 were advanced level learners. The results of this survey indicate that the differences in part of speech in some isomorphic words between Japanese and Chinese have interfered with learners’ correct use of these isomorphic words in Chinese. The results also show that the differences in transitivity in isomorphic words have caused learners’ misjudgement about grammatical use of these words in Chinese because the transitivity differences widen the gaps in syntactical structures between the two languages. When Japanese native speakers learn Chinese, it is necessary for them to know the differences and similarities in isomorphic words between the two languages in oder to avoid negative transfers from Japanese.

"Creativity" is one of important part of human behavior. From the individual ability of problem-solving, the development of technology updating to the social-cultural and Organizational reform and innovation have so much close relationship with creativity by human being. Whether in a corporate or learning environment, the ability of creativity is always an important factor which influences if problem solved smoothly, job done well or not. Creativity and innovation activities are developed by people who accomplish a specific job or task at specific time and space. Therefore, when studying "innovation" and "creativity", it is necessary to start this study from human being. The purpose of this study was to explore how the special social-cultural characteristics impact Chinese people, their thinking patterns and personality, innovative behavior creating, and how gender differences affect the performance of innovative behavior. This study divided Chinese personality into 7 types- "aggressive and self-control", "seeking truth from facts", "enthusiasm and friendly", "suspicious mind", "gentle and easy-going", " kindness" and "smart and sharp" .It explores how personality and gender differences impact innovative behavior. The results were as follows: "Suspicious mind" and "kindness" type of personality has a negative correlation with the impact of "innovative behavior", but the impact is not obvious; "aggressive and self-control " type, "seeking truth from facts" type, "enthusiasm and friendly" and "gentle and easy-going" type of personality has a significant positive correlation with the impact of "innovative behavior"; And "smart and sharp" type of personality has a positive correlation with the impact of "innovative behavior", but not significantly affected. Among them, the "aggressive and self-control" type of personality is the most innovative ones, the next ones followed are "enthusiasm and friendly" type, "seeking truth from facts" and "gentle and easy-going" type of personality. A Gender differences has not obvious impact to innovative behavior.

This study aimed to explore the influence of Chinese homophone density on spoken word recognition by behavioral and event-related potentials approaches. Since previous studies have demonstrated that orthography might affect the core processes of spoken word recognition. The goal of the present study was to investigate the how and what information of visual/orthography will make influence on Chinese spoken word recognition. In Chinese, there are many single-character words that are homophones. The number of homophones was defined as homophone density in the present study. Thus, we used two different tasks to demonstrate the influence of Chinese homophone density on spoken word recognition. Experiment 1 was auditory decision task, we manipulated homophone density in two conditions (high or low). For reaction time, the facilitation effect of Chinese homophone density was observed in this experiment: reaction times were faster for high homophone density. Experiment 2 was auditory semantic categorization task. In this task, participants were asked to decide whether each item was “Animal name”, we manipulated homophone density in two conditions of no trials. For reaction time, the inhibition effect of Chinese homophone density was observed, which was opposite to finding of experiment 1. In experiment 3, event-related potentials approach was adopted to examine the time course of homophone density effect on spoken word recognition. We adopted the same paradigm as experiment 2 to record EEG signal. The goal of this experiment was to investigate different cognitive processes in different time course. In summary, this study has demonstrated that Chinese homophone density effect on spoken word recognition process, which provides the strongest evidence of on-line activation of visual/orthography during Chinese spoken word recognition.
