Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Predictions of the devastating impact of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) are heightened in disadvantaged rural populations, yet studies investigating AD in this population are limited. Other researchers have shown that when rural Appalachian people are aware of their risk for a chronic illness, they are more willing to adopt healthy behaviors (Della, 2011; Schoenberg et al. 2011), suggesting that educational programs to increase knowledge and perception of risk are needed. The purpose of this article is to report findings from exploring knowledge of Alzheimer’s disease in a southern rural West Virginia community of residents (N = 193) and a sample of caregivers (n = 20) using cognitive interview techniques of “Think-aloud” and “Laddering”. The cultural fit and relevance of the “Knowledge of Alzheimer’s Disease scale or KAD (Jang, Kim, Hansen, & Chiriboga, 2010) was also examined. Findings from the KAD included that an updated AD measure appropriate for use in rural settings is needed. Findings from the cognitive interview included that instead of fatalistic attitudes toward Alzheimer’s disease, residents often viewed AD as something potentially preventable through healthier living, use of herbs as children, and eventual discovery of more effective treatment regimens. The themes that emerged were “preventing AD” and “personal knowing of AD”. Considering cultural perceptions and determining knowledge gaps in the communities by rural providers is an important component of changing stigma regarding routine cognitive screening for rural older adults at increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Abstract:
Abstract As married couples aging together, their health behaviors and outcomes could be shaped by both one’s own and the spouse’s characteristics. Using dyadic datasets, speakers in this symposium explored the interdependence nature of marital relations by identifying the mechanisms of how shared resources or strains affect spouses’ physical and mental health outcomes among married couples. Wang, Kim, and Burr identified distinct types of personality configurations among older couples using the Health and Retirement Study, and examined how personality compatibilities could buffer negative effects of adverse life events on older couples’ mental health. Using data from the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project, Proulx, Skoblow, and Han further investigated the associations between marital quality and mental health among caregiving dyads, with a special focus on a comparison of different caregiving groups (spouse, child, others). From a physical health perspective, Wilson and Novak presented the dynamic behind relationship quality, joint health behaviors, health problems, health satisfaction, and health similarity between spouses. Finally, Kim, Jang, Park, and Chiriboga focused on couple contexts for acculturation among older Korean immigrants in the U.S., and examined how each spousal acculturation level affects healthcare utilization and difficulties in health service use. Focusing on married couples, this symposium showcases the interplay of family experiences, health behaviors, and relational dynamics of both spouses in shaping their health, and highlights the benefits of dyadic approaches. Speakers and our discussant, Dr. Karen Lyons, will discuss implications for social program design and future research.

Abstract:
Abstract Ethnic minority populations, such as immigrants, have demonstrated lower levels of trust in the health care system and their health care providers compared with non-migrant populations (Navaza et al., 2012; Renzaho, Polonsky, McQuilten, & Waters, 2013). This medical mistrust may adversely influence older adult immigrants’ use of and satisfaction with health services (Hong et al., 2018a; Jang, Kim, & Chiriboga, 2005). Thus, the current project aimed to characterize influences of medical mistrust (healthcare system and healthcare providers) in older adult immigrant populations living in the United States of America (U.S.). We interviewed 142 older adult immigrants and refugees (aged 60+ years) who identified as Bosnian, Chinese, Indian, Korean, Latino, and Vietnamese about their perceptions on living in the U.S., of the healthcare system, and healthcare utilization as a part of the Successful Aging among Immigrants in Midlife (SAIM) project. Linear regression models predicting trust in the healthcare system and trust in healthcare providers were tested with healthcare knowledge (measured with a single item about flu shots) , acculturation, length of time in the U.S. , and age as predictors. We found that older age and healthcare knowledge was predictive of higher levels of trust in healthcare providers for Chinese. Although healthcare knowledge was predictive of trust in the health care system for the Chinese participants, greater length of time and higher acculturation were associated with higher trust in the healthcare system among Indian participants. The implications of the different predictive variables in each of the hypothesized models will be discussed.

Abstract:
AbstractAnalyses of skeletal phenotypic traits have the potential to yield information pertaining to social organization, such as kinship and residence patterns. In this research, we examine sex-specific phenotypic variability of craniofacial and mandibular metric traits in eight skeletal samples from four sites (San Gerónimo, Chiribaya Alta, Chiribaya Baja, and El Yaral) attributed to the Chiribaya polity (A.D. 772–1350) and a contemporary Ilo-Tumilaca/Cabuza group (El Algodonal) from southern Peru. Through this data set we investigate various aspects of social organization (e.g., postmarital residence patterns) within the Chiribaya polity. We also examine Chiribaya interactions with the contemporaneous, yet culturally distinct, Tumilaca cultural group. The pattern of between-group bias-corrected estimates of biological distances points toward a more distant biological relationship between the two cultures than has previously been reported. Among the Chiribaya groups considered, determinant ratio analyses indicate that males from two cemeteries (Chiribaya Alta Cemetery 4 and Chiribaya Alta Cemetery 7) were significantly more variable than females, suggesting that males were the more mobile sex. Several explanatory models are considered, including a matrilocal residence pattern and the in-migration of males. We also examine the unique nature of results from within Chiribaya Alta, which support the argument made by previous researchers that this site represents a regional political center.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Peruvian south coast between the Tambo and Ilo rivers is a deserted wasteland. Yet tracts of abandoned farmland and expanses of desiccated lomas vegetation indicate that it was once vibrant and productive. Scattered habitations and cemeteries also indicate a pronounced resident Chiribaya population between A.D. 1200 and 1400. While river drainages of the western Andes and their canalized extensions are often treated as primary analytical units of study, our investigation of so-called peripheral intervalley regions points to a highly engineered and intensively managed landscape. When compared to the Ilo Valley, intervalley Chiribaya were organized into smaller communities and managed smaller spring-fed irrigation systems but were also heavily invested in adjacent maritime and lomas resource bases. Utilizing a mixed economic strategy, we argue, these intervalley populations were anything but marginal to the Chiribaya señorío of the Ilo region; rather, they were fully engaged in the social, political, and economic spheres of the late Intermediate period Peruvian south coast and formed a significant component of the Chiribaya cultural landscape. Our results hold implications for other similarly marginalized areas of the Andean coast, where distinct microenvironmental parameters and human ingenuity intersected to significantly transform the western Andes.

Abstract:
BackgroundCD4 and CD8 T cells are genetically and functionally distinct cell subsets of the adaptive immune system that play pivotal roles in immune surveillance and disease control. During development in the thymus, transcription factors ThPOK and Runx3 regulate the differentiation and maturation of these two lineages into single positive T cells that enter the periphery with mutually exclusive expression of either the CD4 or CD8 co-receptor.1–2 Despite our expectation that these two cell fates are fixed, mature CD4+CD8+ double positive (DP) T cells have been described in the context of numerous immunological responses, including cancer, but their molecular and functional properties and therapeutic relevance remain controversial and largely unknown.3–5MethodsOur lab has identified and characterized a heterogenous DP T cell population in murine and human melanoma tumors comprised of CD4 and CD8 T cells re-expressing the opposite co-receptor and a parallel uptake in the opposite cell type’s phenotype and function. Using CD4 (Trp1) and CD8 (Pmel) transgenic TCR T cells specific to B16 melanoma antigens gp75 and gp100 respectively, we demonstrate the re-expression of the opposite co-receptor following adoptive T cell transfer in B16 melanoma tumor bearing mice.ResultsSpecifically, up to 50% of transferred CD4 Trp1 T cells will re-express CD8 to become a DP T cell in the tumor microenvironment. Further, these CD4 derived DP T cells upregulate CD8 lineage regulator Runx3 and cytolytic genes Gzmb, Gzmk, and Prf1 to become potent cytotoxic T cells. Alternatively, a subset of CD8 Pmel T cells differentiate into DP T cells characterized by the increased expression of CD4, ThPOK, and regulatory marker FoxP3 (figure 1). In addition, we utilized 10x single cell and ATAC sequencing to further characterize these divergent DP T cell populations among open repertoire T cells isolated from murine and human melanoma tumors.ConclusionsOur findings highlight the capability of single positive T cells to differentiate in response to antigen and local stimuli into novel T cell subsets with polyfunctional characteristics. The resulting cell subsets will potentially affect the tumor microenvironment in distinct ways. Our studies may inform therapeutic approaches to identify antigen specific T cells as well as innovative signaling pathways to target when genetically engineering T cells to optimize cytotoxic function in the setting of adoptive cell therapy.Ethics ApprovalThe human biospecimen analyses were approved by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center IRB #06-107ReferencesEllmeier W, Haust L & Tschismarov R. Abstract:
A reanalysis of the species relationships in the genus Phareicranaus Roewer, 1913, here considered the senior synonym of Acanthocranaus Roewer, 1913, Santinezia Roewer, 1923 and Comboyus Roewer, 1943, is carried out, using information unavailable in a previous analysis (of Santinezia). Subfamilies Cranainae and Prostygninae may be not monophyletic, since the generic relationships among cranaines are still obscure; it seems that Phareicranaus is closely related to Ventrivomer Roewer, 1913 and Ventrisudis Roewer, 1963, based on presence of a ventral apophysis on male coxa IV and cylindrical pedipalpal femur. The analysis performed with equal weighting generated 64 equally parsimonius trees (275 steps, ci= .24; ri= .60), and the strict consensus tree differs substantially from previous analyses. Based on results of the equally weigthed cladistic analysis, Phareicranaus is supported by the following unambiguous synapomorphies: penis base of the glans ringed; pedipalpal femur with a stout dorsoapical spine; strong ventral tubercles on pedipalpal femur and; area II invading area I (the two halves do not touch each other). Two new species are described, Phareicranaus divisor (type-locality: Brazil, Acre, Parque Nacional da Serra do Divisor) and P. patauateua (type-locality: Brazil, Pará, Ourém, Patauateua, fazenda Gavião). Male genitalia are described for the following cranaids: Chiriboga albituber Roewer, 1959; Metacranaus tricalcaris Roewer, 1913; Phareicranaus calcariger (Roewer, 1913), comb. n.; P. albimedialis (Goodnight & Goodnight, 1943); P. festae Roewer, 1925; P. parallelus Roewer, 1925; P. angelicus (Roewer, 1963) comb. n.; and P. ortizi (Roewer, 1952) and Ventrisudis mira Roewer, 1963. The following new combinations are proposed: from Acanthocranaus, Phareicranaus calcariger (Roewer, 1913); from Santinezia, Phareicranaus albilineatus (Roewer, 1932); P. angelicus (Roewer, 1963); P. arthrocentricus (Mello-Leitão, 1943), P. biordi (González-Sponga, 1991); P. calcarfemoralis (Roewer, 1917); P. calcaritibialis (Roewer, 1915); P. capayitaensis (González-Sponga, 2003); P. contrerasi (GonzálezSponga, 2003); P. circumlineatus (González-Sponga, 1989); P. curvipes (Roewer, 1916); P. duranti (González-Sponga, 1989); P. fronteriza (González-Sponga, 2003); P. furva (Pinto-da-Rocha & Kury, 2003); P. giganteus (Roewer, 1913); P. glaber (González-Sponga, 2003); P. gracilis (Pinto-da-Rocha & Kury, 2003); P. guaricoensis (González-Sponga, 2003); P. heliae (Avram, 1983); P. hermosa (Pinto-da-Rocha & Kury, 2003); P. lamitisus (González-Sponga, 2003); P. leonensis (González-Sponga, 2003); P. lucifer (Pinto-da-Rocha & Kury, 2003); P. manauara (Pinto-da-Rocha, 1994); P. noctiscansor (Townsend & Milne 2010); P. onorei (Pinto-da-Rocha & Kury, 2003); P. ortizi (Roewer, 1952); P. parvus (GonzálezSponga, 2003); P. sanarensis (González-Sponga, 2003); P. simonbolivari (Avram, 1987); P. singularis (H. Santinezia sanarensis humocaroensis González-Sponga, 2003, transferred to Phareicranaus, is elevated to species level, proposing the new combination and new status: Phareicranaus humocaroensis (González-Sponga, 2003). Three new names are proposed: Phareicranaus roeweri to replace Nieblia festae Roewer, 1925, preoccupied by Phareicranaus festae Roewer, 1925; Phareicranaus goodnightorum to replace Santinezia magna Goodnight & Goodnight 1942, preoccupied by Phareicranaus magnus (Roewer, 1932); and Phareicranaus kuryi to replace Comboyus albilineatus Roewer, 1943, preoccupied by Santinezia albilineata Roewer, 1932, which is presently a junior synonym of Inezia curvipes Roewer, 1916 (now Phareicranaus curvipes). Phareicranaus cingulatus Roewer, 1932 and Santinezia serratotibialis Roewer, 1932 are newly synonymized with Goniosoma calcariferum Simon, 1879 (the type species of Phareicranaus). Additionally, Phareicranaus giganteus Roewer, 1932 is newly synonymized with Holocranaus longipes Roewer 1913, and the monotypic genus Meridia Roewer 1913 (type species M. palpalis Roewer 1913) is transferred from Manaosbiidae to Cranaidae, Cranainae.

Abstract:
AbstractA group of subarboreal tropical beetles, the Xystosomi of subtribe Xystosomina new subtribe, is revised and reclassified based on a reevaluation of structural characters. Xystosomi are found in tropical Australia (Queensland) and tropical/subtropical America (Guerrero, México, to Aguas Blancas, Argentina). The largest concentration of species occurs near the equator in the Amazon Basin, but a significant radiation of flightless forms was recently discovered in the northern Andes of Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela. Xystosomina also includes the Mioptachyi, which at present is composed of the genera Mioptachys and Inpa.Seventy-six species of Neotropical and Australian Xystosomi are described or re-described, illustrated, or keyed. This assemblage includes 12 classic species, 24 species described in the last 3 decades, and 40 new species, a 6-fold increase since the time of Henry Walter Bates, the last 19th-century entomologist to study this remarkable lineage of carabid beetles. The Xystosomi are now arrayed in five genera: Philipis gen.nov. (type: Tachys trunci Darlington, Australia), Geballusa gen.nov. (type: Xystosomus microtretus Erwin, Costa Rica), Gouleta gen.nov. (type: Bembidion cayennense Dejean, Brazil), Batesiana gen.nov. (type: Xystosomus gruti Bates, Brazil), and Xystosomus Schaum (type: Xystosomus inflatus Schaum, Brazil). The following specific taxa are described as new (type-locality in parentheses): Geballusa rex (Brazil: 06°02′N 050°17′W), oligotreta (Panamá: 08°40′N 079°56′W), nannotreta (Brazil: 02°54′S 059°57′W), Gouleta gentryi (Perú: 12°50′S 069°20′W), Batesiana para (Brazil: 01°22′S 048°20′W), angustia (Perú: 05°08′S 074°45′W), samiria (Perú: 05°08′S 074°45′W), esheje (Perú: 05°08′S 074°45′W), crassa (Perú: 03°15′S 072°55′W), notesheje (Perú: 03°15′S 072°55′W), manusculptilis (Perú: 12°07′S 070°58′W), parapara (Brazil: 02°28′S 046°26′W), am (Perú: 05°08′S 074°45′W), indetecticostis (Ecuador: 00°57′S 077°48′W), nox (Ecuador: 00°57′S 077°48′W), parkeri (Perú: 03°15′S 072°55′W), hamatilis (Ecuador: 01°02′S 077°40′W), notparkeri (Colombia: 00°08′N 075°51′W), pfunorum (Perú: 03°15′S 072°55′W), quadrata (Perú: 03°15′S 072°55′W), protosculptilis (Perú: 12°50′S 069°20′W), misahualli (Ecuador: 01°02′S 077°40′W), depressisculptilis (Ecuador: 01°02′S 077°40′W), irisculptilis (Ecuador: 00°24′S 076°37′W), foveosculptilis (Brazil: 02°28′S 046°26′W), punctisculptilis (Perú: 03°15′S 072°55′W), eugeneae (Perú: 11°56′47″S 071°17′00″W), anchicaya (Colombia: 03°43′N 076°57′W), jefe (Panamá: 09°12′N 079°21′W), exigupunctata (Perú: 05°08′S 074°45′W), rosebudae (Ecuador: 00°57′S 077°48′W), equanegrei (Ecuador: 00°57′S 077°48′W), henryi (Ecuador: 00°28′S 077°53′W), baeza (Ecuador: 00°57′S 077°48′W), huacamayas (Ecuador: 00°28′S 077°53′W), dannyi (Ecuador: 00°57′S 077°48′W), alticola (Colombia: 04°21′S 074°22′W), jacupiranga (Brazil: 24°42′S 048°00′W), chiriboga (Ecuador: 00°15′S 078°44′W), wygo (Colombia: 04°53′N 074°31′W).The following names are resurrected from synonymy for good species: hilaris Bates and belti Bates. Several name combinations were changed as a result of the generic reorganization: Philipis trunci (Darlington), Geballusa microtreta (Erwin), G. polytreta (Erwin), Gouleta notiophiloides (Erwin), G. spangleri (Erwin), G. cayennense (Dejean), Batesiana bisulcifrons (Erwin), B. negrei (Erwin), B. hilaris (Bates), B. belti (Bates), B. ampliata (Bates), B. strigosa (Bates), B. gruti (Bates), B. nigripalpis (Erwin), B. villiersi (Perrault), B. apicisulcata (Erwin), B. iris (Erwin), B. sculpticollis (Bates), B. sulcicostis (Bates), B. anterocostis (Erwin), B. ovatula (Bates), B. grossipunctata (Erwin), B. batesi (Erwin), B. seriata (Erwin), B. sublaevis (Bates), B. aetholia (Erwin), B. parainsularis (Erwin), NEW COMBINATIONS.Results of the Xystosomi character analysis provided impetus for a reanalysis of the classification of the major lineages of the more inclusive group, Bembidiini, to discover where the Xystosomi might belong and, in turn, if our understanding of the Bembidiini itself needed adjustment. These results are implied in Part I, but presented in detail in a separate paper, Part II. Phylogeny and Zoogeography, along with supplemental taxonomic information.

Abstract:
A comparative analysis of the technical efficiency in the production of national cocoa among the main producing cantons of the province of Guayas was carried out. For this, the study was based on an analysis with inductive reasoning and empirical-analytical paradigm, through the elaboration of surveys to 361 UPA's in the cantons of: Milagro, San Jacinto de Yaguachi, El Empalme, Alfredo Baquerizo Moreno, Naranjal and Simón Bolívar; these data served as the basis for the elaboration of the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model. The results show that on average, the Simón Bolívar canton is the canton with the highest technical efficiency, with 50% of the total UPAs surveyed in the range of 70% and 99% effectiveness. Finally, regarding the observed averages of allocative efficiency, it can be concluded that Jujan has the highest average with 75%. Abstract:
Referencias [1]N. Abstract:
Coca-leaf chewing results in absorption of part of its cocaine content. Following absorption, cocaine and/or its stable metabolic product benzoylecgonine (BZE) may enter the chewer's hair follicles and subsequently be incorporated into the hair shafts. This article reports that a recently developed radioimmunoassay is capable of detecting BZE in hair samples from ancient, spontaneously mummified human remains. Results are provided from tests on hair samples of 163 individuals, representatives of populations from seven different cultures living at coastal and low valley sites in northern Chile during the past 4,000 years. These indicate that coca-leaf-chewing practices began in this area about 2,000 years ago. The practice seems to have been common in several subsequent cultural groups. In one of these—Maitas Chiribaya—the majority of both adult men and women indulged in this practice. Coca-leaf-chewing women probably transferred BZE to their fetuses and nursing infants.

Abstract:
This investigation uses a bioarchaeological approach to test the existence of pre-Inka colonists within the Andean coastal valleys of Moquegua, Peru, and Azapa, Chile, as predicted by Murra's (1972) classic model of verticality. The archaeological evidence and biodistance results obtained using genetically controlled dental traits from 859 skeletal and mummified remains indicate that the Late Intermediate period (A.D. 1100-1476) coastal Chiribaya people of the Moquegua Valley, Peru, likely represent descendants of altiplano populations that migrated to the coastal region following the disintegration of the Middle Horizon (A.D. 750-1100) Tiwanaku colony located in the middle Moquegua Valley. In the neighboring Azapa Valley, Chile, genetic change among prehistoric populations was due to gradual in situ microevolution of local populations rather than colonization by altiplano people. Coastal populations of the Azapa Valley maintained biocultural continuity with the Archaic period Chinchorro coastal population. It is concluded that Murra's model of direct verticality should be evaluated using both biological and archaeological data on a case-by-case basis.

Abstract:
AbstractThe geographic expansion of Tiwanaku people and culture (cal A.D. 500–1150) in the south-central Andes can be viewed as a two-staged diaspora. This article defines and categorizes diasporas, suggests archaeological correlates and theoretical implications, and reconstructs the Tiwanaku diaspora. The first stage was a colonizing diaspora in the context of the functioning Tiwanaku state, limited to a few mid-elevation places such as the middle Osmore drainage near Moquegua and probably Cochabamba. The second stage was a much more extensive victim/refugee diaspora driven by the violent disintegration of the colonies around A.D. 1000, in conjunction with either the collapse of Tiwanaku or its radical reorientation by a militaristic elite. Second-stage diaspora populations that settled in sparsely populated areas such as the upper Osmore drainage or the Carumas–Calacoa region established dispersed, small, defensible villages. Those that settled among a larger or more established host population such as the Chiribaya in the coastal Osmore Valley integrated as a marked, lower-status minority. This explosive collapse suggests that Tiwanaku was composed of multiple groups whose differing interests could not be contained. Supporting evidence is drawn primarily from the Osmore drainage, especially the coastal segment.

Abstract:
The nature and extent of the political and cultural influence of the Tiwanaku state (ca. A.D. 500—1100) in the Azapa Valley of northern Chile are debated topics. The absolute chronology of these contacts also remains somewhat unclear. Much of the debate has centered on the origins and chronological position of the Tiwanaku-related black-on-red ceramic style called Cabuza. In order to reevaluate the chronological position of the Cabuza, Maytas-Chiribaya, and San Miguel ceramic styles and associated cultural phases of the Azapa Valley, we obtained a total of 16 new radiocarbon dates for the Azapa-6, Azapa- 71a, Azapa-141, and Azapa-143 cemeteries. All but one sample dated to the Late Intermediate period (ca.A.D. 1000-1450). We compare our results with previously published radiocarbon and thermoluminescence dates and carry out Bayesian probability calculations, establishing the most likely chronological ranges for the three ceramic styles. Based on this research, we argue that the undeniable Tiwanaku influence seen in the Azapa Valley more likely reflects processes set in motion by the collapse of the Tiwanaku state rather than an attempt to colonize or indirectly control the Azapa Valley during the Middle Horizon (ca. A.D. 550-1000).

Abstract:
In 2003 Mycobacterium pinnipedii was described as responsible for producing tuberculosis (TB) in living otariid pinnipeds from Argentina and Australia. It is the only member of marine origin within the Mycobacterium tuberculosis Complex (MTBC), which also affects other domestic and wild mammals, and humans. Based on several pre-Columbian records of human tuberculosis in South America, in 2010-2011 a new hypothesis about the origin of this zoonosis through otariid pinnipeds arose. In 2014, this hypothesis was confirmed based on the study of ancient DNA from three mummies (700-1,000 years BP) of the Chiribaya culture (Peru). Since there were no records of TB bone lesions in zooarchaeological samples of otariid pinnipeds from South America and the rest of the world, our study aimed at examining zooarchaeological samples of pinnipeds from coastal sites of the Beagle Channel (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina), being the oldest Túnel I (6,400-4,300 years BP). A total of 4,138 vertebrae were analyzed, of which 0.46 % showed lesions compatible with TB. In addition, we propose a new hypothesis on possible mechanisms of Mycobacterium pinnipedii dissemination that would explain the transmission routes to the different otariid pinniped species of the Southern Hemisphere. Mycobacterium pinnipedii is one of the most aggressive mycobacteria of the MTBC and of high risk for humans.
