AbstractThis article discusses the transformation that took place within the Chishtiya silsilah after its revival in the Punjab in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Within this Chishtiya revival an exclusionary streak emerged, embedded within a shari‘a-centred orientation, leading to Shi‘a and Chishti Sunni antagonism in the Punjab. As a result, the composite and all-inclusive ethos epitomised by earlier Chishti Sufis of the thirteenth century was jettisoned. Underpinning these developments was the advent of the Usuli faction among the Shi‘a of Awadh, whose influence was resonating in t

Abstract This article offers a reevaluation of studies on the origins of Sufism in South Asia. Generally, scholars have pointed to the thirteenth century as the genesis of Sufi orders in Northern India. However, this period supplies no textual evidence to support this claim. The vague picture of the thirteenth century is one of individual shaykhs unattached to specific Sufi orders or distinct religious teachings. By contrast, in the fourteenth century there is a wealth of Sufi textual sources available in the genres of malfūẓāt, letters and biographical texts that seek to institutionalize Sufi

Nous analysons en détail la conception que se fait ʿUbaydullāh du bayʿa et du samāʿ dans son traité. Pour ce faire, nous nous sommes efforcés de restaurer le texte Sharḥ Muf

Abstract:
Abstract Sayyid Abu’l-A’la Mawdudi was born on September 25, 1903 (3 Rajah 1321), in Awrangabad, Deccan, the youngest of Sayyid Ahmad Hasan Mawdudi’s five children and the second son from his second marriage. The Mawdudis claimed a proud heritage. They were descended from one of the most prominent branches of the Chishti Sufi order,1 a lineage that was later an important aspect of Mawdudi’s claim to authority.2 In 1932, he wrote “I belong to one such family that has a 1,300-year history of guiding, asceticism and Sufism.”3 The Chishtis traced their origins back to a family of sayyids (descendants of the Prophet) of the ahlu’l-bayt (descendants of the Prophet through his daughter, Fatimah)-a mark of nobility among Muslims of the subcontinent-who in the tenth century initiated “the exalted Chishtiyah Sufi silsilah (lineage)” in Afghanistan.
