Palágyi, A., and A. Vasiliev. "Linguistic Landscape of a Modern Post-Soviet Capital — Case of Chișinău, Republic of Moldova." Bulletin of the Karaganda university Philology series 112, no. 4 (December 30, 2023): 6–17. http://dx.doi.org/10.31489/2023ph4/6-17.

Abstract:
The study of linguistic landscape considers the hierarchy of languages motivated by political, administrative, and economic reasons, as reflected in the graphic design and order of inscriptions. In this research, we will present the linguistic landscape of Chișinău by analyzing top-down and bottom-up signs and commercial billboards. The choice fell on this city because it is multiethnic, home for Moldovans/Romanians and other nationalities. The relevance of the topic is explained by the fact that Moldova aspires to join the European Union, and in 2018 Chișinău became one of the country’s pilot municipalities for the application of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, which the country has adopted, but has not yet ratified. The new signs must indicate direction to public and cultural institutions, monuments and memorials, parks and major streets, university buildings, the railway station, and the airport with trilingual inscriptions in Moldovan, a local minority language (Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, German or Yiddish) and English. The investigation of the linguistic landscape will help identify the dominant language(s) in the Moldovan capital, understand the relations between linguistic communities and the linguistic situation in Chișinău.

Abstract:
Yurii Shibaev approached all genres of easel painting, but he established himself with the urban landscape. The plastic artist fell in love with Chișinău. This fact is attested by the numerous works dedicated to the city. In the custody of the Fund of the National Art Museum of Moldova are several urban landscape paintings by Yurii Shibaev: „Chișinău under construction. Râșcani Sector”, „Renewed Chișinău. Circus under construction”, „Râşcanii renewed”, „After the rain”, „The New Chișinău” etc. In his paintings we can see the representations of the old city, but also of the areas with modern elements, which are in constant evolution. The artist wanted to present the beauty of the city with lots of vegetation, populated with people, crowded with public transport: everything being in constant motion. The artist of realistic training tends to work with large decorative spots that are meant to give expressiveness to the painting. The predominant colors in his creation are white, green and gray. Thus, the artist resorts to a limited range of colors, using colored accents in the representation of people and cars. In the paintings „Old Chișinău”, „Chișinău under construction. Râşcani Sector”, „Chișinău is being built”, „The New Chișinău”, „After the rain”, etc. Yurii Shibaev confirms the image of Chișinău as a „white stone city”. Residential, ecclesiastical and cultural buildings are elevated above the rich city with abundant vegetation.

Abstract:
In this article, we elucidate some aspects related to the constitution of the city of Chișinău, presenting data from archaeological, toponymic and anthroponymic studies. During the period of the Golden Horde, the Mongol-Tatars left certain traces in various localities of the Republic of Moldova, including Chișinău. They arrived in the Tighina plain as nomadic cattle breeders, sheltering in Turanian yurts and gradually becoming seminomadic. Their evacuation in the 60s of the 14th century, from the south-east of the Carpathian region, preceded the establishment of Chișinău as a rural town near a former Tatar castle. The period in which the Nogai Emir came to the west of the lower course of the Dnieper and expanded the area of Golden Horde domination up to the vicinity of the Eastern Carpathians, was a premise for the expansion of the system of communication networks, established by Ginghiz Khan, and in the central part of present-day Moldova; on the Iași–Tighina route there was also the post office on the site of the future city of Chișinău. In the middle of the 17th century, Chişinău was transformed from a rural to an urban locality, retaining various notions from the period of Mongol-Tatar domination, as well as the toponyms Chişinău (cismea, spring, fountain), Buiuk (the name of a large spring, from which comes from the name of the respective village), Bahína (garden), Poșta Veche, Săbăna (from saban, light plough, ploughman), etc.

Abstract:
Although the Republic of Moldova has experienced massive increase in vehicle ownership and use, some of the latest advances in how to approach and nurture public space are underutilized. This article summarizes the basic findings of a project aimed at transfer of knowledge and the implementation of the smart city process in Chișinău, Moldova. Chișinău presents a perfect opportunity for full-scale transformation regarding mobility in the smart city process. In its current state, where there are still enough opportunities to make significant improvements and for the region itself, the Republic of Moldova falls into the category of middle- to lower-income countries. Moreover, this article looks at the difficulties of preparing a smart mobility strategy while under the effect of the current COVID-19 pandemic in the form of social distancing by the city. The subject of study is to determine whether a long-distance strategy can be properly created and introduced, mostly based on proper communication. Key data sources were examined and chosen as the basis for determining weaknesses and as a basis for determining the main pillars. While challenging, this paper finds distanced knowledge transfer and planning to be achievable.

Abstract:
The theme of the dialogue is the visits of foreign writers to Chișinău and the literary collaborations with them during the last two decades of the Soviet regime and in the first two after the emergence of the new state Republic of Moldova. The facts are reconstructed by the poet, prose writer, playwright, folklorist Iulian Filip, who was actively involved in them, starting in the 70s. Thus, the meetings in Chișinău with the Armenian poet Ghevorg Emin, the Japanese translator Sumiya Haruia, the Romanian writers Ioan Alexandru, Mircea Tomuş, the Italian journalist, editor and translator Amedeo Carrocci etc. are reconstructed. As a result of these meetings, collaborations were established and especially writers from Chișinău literature were translated. Living memory corrects the official records, irremediably converted to the themes required by Soviet culture, which the foreign writers who arrived in Chișinău had to honor. At the same time, Iulia Filip reconstructs some sequences from the literary life of the first years of the independence of the republic between the Prut and Dniester.

Abstract:
The dialogue with Alla Ceastina, who’s the doctor in the study of arts, senior scientific researcher, focuses on an interesting document discovered in the National Archives Agency of the Republic of Moldova, which provides information about the trip of a group consisting of 25 students and 4 teachers from the Real School for the boys travelling from Chișinău to the Romanian city of Iași, which took place at 4 and 5 October 1909. Today it is particularly interesting to follow in the footsteps of this excursion, surprisingly rich in historical facts, to visit architectural monuments such as: the Church of the Three Holy Hierarchs, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Saint Nicholas Church, the university, the theater, etc. Such a trip to Iași city remains relevant and can present the basis of a modern exciting tourist route for any guide. It’s known that the Real School for the boys of Chișinău opened on December 6, 1873, and its purpose was the development of practical and technical skills with the completion of general education. So, this year we celebrate 150 years since its establishment, it’s an additional reason to remember this institution.

Abstract:
The article reconstructs the only visit of the Romanian poet Nichita Stănescu to Chişinău from a series of testimonies of local writers. Nichita Stănescu arrived in the capital of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1976, during a period of complicated Soviet-Romanian relations, which made difficult the communication between Romanian-language writers from the republics on the two banks of the Prut. The haloed poet in the Bucharest environment and recognized as an unmistakable symbol of Romanian lyricism enjoys special sympathy among the Romanian-language writers from Chișinău, so the news of his participation in the events of the Soviet Literature Week in Moldova festival provoked and attracted attention. Every gesture he made, from the barely sketched to the exaggerated expressions, became a veritable charming show that was fixed in the memory of the witnesses and generated miniature stories. The stories about Nichita Stănescu first circulated in oral form, as living folklore in the narrow circles of writers. When it became possible, a series of testimonies about the gestures of the beloved Romanian poet appeared in the press. Together, the evocations of the “gentle angel who announced the opening of the windows” created the portrait of a Nichita Stănescu of Chișinău residents. In turn, Nichita Stănescu left a particularly expressive and representative metaphor about the city of Chişinău, of which she said was “a white pearl, in so much pure green”.

The articles refer to the historical significance of the Union of Bessarabia with Romania– historical circumstances, stages, personalities, lessons for contemporaries and descendants. In 1927, he expressed his conviction that “Representing the victory of a historical truth, the union, whose the ninth anniversary we celebrate today, is eternal, unchanged like the truth that represents it”; and in 1938, revealing the decision of the Council of the Country of March 27, 1918, of union “forever”, the Romanian patriot emphasizes: “Forever! Abstract:
Despite the significant burden of tick-borne diseases (TBDs), epidemiologic studies are missing, and TBD awareness is low in the Republic of Moldova. Our study is the first to assess the prevalence of the main tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) infecting dogs in this country and associated risk factors. In this cross-sectional, multi-centre study (June 2018–July 2019), blood samples were collected from dogs presenting in veterinary clinics (Chişinău: N = 30) and hosted in public dog shelters (Cahul: N = 42; Chişinău: N = 48). TBPs were assessed by molecular techniques and risk factors by the logistic regression model. Hepatozoon canis was the most prevalent TBP (15.8% [19/120]), followed by Babesia canis (11.7% [14/120]), Anaplasma phagocytophilum (5.8% [7/120]), and Bartonella spp. (0.8% [1/120]). Blood samples tested negative for Borrelia spp., Rickettsia spp., Francisella tularensis, Anaplasma platys, and Ehrlichia canis. Dogs originating from the veterinary clinics had a higher prevalence of A. phagocytophilum infection than those from the shelters (16.6% versus 2.2%, respectively, p = 0.0292; OR: 27.0 [95%CI: 1.4–521.9]). Dogs from Chișinău had a higher prevalence of Hepatozoon canis infection versus those from Cahul (19.2% versus 9.5%, respectively, p = 0.0295; OR: 3.9 [95%CI: 1.1–13.4]). We recommend routine use of acaricides and deworming of dogs to prevent or/and limit TBD spread. Further TBD surveillance studies are needed.

Abstract:
Abstract The Centre for the Homeless in Chișinău embodies on a small scale the recent evolution of state policies towards the homeless in Moldova (a post-Soviet state). This institution applies the binary approach of the state, namely the ‘left hand’ and the ‘right hand’, towards marginalised people. On the one hand, the institution provides accommodation, food, and primary social, legal assistance and medical care. On the other hand, the Shelter personnel impose a series of disciplinary constraints over the users. The Shelter also operates a differentiation of the users according to two categories: the ‘recoverable’ and those deemed ‘irrecoverable’ (persons with severe disabilities, people with addictions). The personnel representing the ‘left hand’ (or ‘soft-line’) regularly negotiate with the employees representing the ‘right hand’ (‘hard-line’) of the institution to promote a milder and a more humanistic approach towards the users. This article relies on multi-method research including descriptive statistical analysis with biographical records of 810 subjects, a thematic analysis of in-depth interviews with homeless people (N = 65), people at risk of homelessness (N = 5), professionals (N = 20) and one ethnography of the Shelter.

Abstract:
In the second half of the XIX century provincial traveling circuses were quite common in Bessarabia. The first attempt to build a permanent circus in Chișinău was made on April 22, 1911. In March 1912, the owner of the Bristol hotel, Constantin Kolomandi, wrote to the Construction department of the Bessarabian Provincial Board a new request for the construction of a stone two-story building of the circus theater at the corner of Mikhailovskaya and Schmidt streets (today Mihai Eminescu and Metropolitan Varlaam streets). In May 7, 1912, he received an official building permit. In general, the construction of the building of the circus theater, which was supervised by the city architect Vladimir Țiganco, was completed on October 21, 1913. Later, the “Express” cinema was opened here. In the post-war period, this building was housed by the Moldavian Drama Theater. And in 1954, the premises were transferred to the Moldavian Philharmonic. But on September 24, 2020, the cultural heritage of Moldova was damaged as a result of a fire which seriously damaged most part of the building of the National Philharmonic „S. Lunchevici”. Today the building is in the need of restoration in order to preserve its historical, architectural and artistic value.

Abstract:
The aim was to describe the price of homemade street foods in four cities of Central Asia and Eastern Europe and to analyze its association with energy density, macronutrients, sodium and potassium contents. Cross-sectional evaluations of street food vending sites were conducted in Dushanbe, Tajikistan (n = 562), Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (n = 384), Almaty, Kazakhstan (n = 236) and Chișinău, Moldova (n = 89) in 2016–2017. Information on the homemade street foods available, including price, was systematically collected; the most commonly available foods (n = 64) were sampled for chemical analysis. Prices were converted to international dollars ($) and expressed as $/serving, $/100 g and $/100 kcal. The median street food price was $1.00/serving, $0.85/100 g and $0.33/100 kcal. Traditional foods were cheaper per 100 g than the westernized ($0.77 vs. $1.00, p = 0.011). For each unit increase in energy density (kcal/g), the homemade street foods were $0.12 cheaper per 100 kcal and $0.11 more expensive per 100 g. The carbohydrate content was negatively associated with price per 100 kcal, while total fat, monounsaturated, saturated and trans-fatty acids content were positively associated with price per 100 g. Energy-dense homemade street foods were the cheapest. Further insight on food preparation might clarify the association between carbohydrates and monounsaturated fatty acids content and street food price.

Abstract:
Octavian Ghibu was born in 1912 being the eldest son of Onisifor Ghibu and Veturia Nicolau-Ghibu. He studied economics and law and received a doctorate in economics, becoming one of the youngest businessmen of interwar Romania. He was arrested in 1948, and sent in forced-labour camps during 1950-1951. In 1961, he was tried and sentenced to 17 years in prison on false charges of treason and was released in 1964. In order to earn a living for himself and his family, he was forced to work, until his retirement, in jobs incompatible with his high professional training, taking into account the fact that he had a political severely negative record. As an exception, he had the opportunity to contribute to the improvement of economic university education (insurances). For more than three decades, the main aim of his life was to systematize and publish the huge written work of his father, the scholar, professor and national unity activist Onisifor Ghibu, who was severely marginalised by the communist regime between 1945 and 1972. Octavian Ghibu played an important role in establishing relations with the Republic of Moldova from 1990 onwards and revitalising Romanian spirit in this country; he contributed to the restoration and improvement of the Romanian language and culture in Basarabia by organising the “Onisifor Ghibu” Library in Chișinău (1992).

The apple fruit is the second most frequently consumed, after bananas and some quality characteristics like size, gloss, color, and aroma influenced directly the flesh consumption. In this study, the external (weight, size, skin colour) and internal (firmness, total soluble solids, acidity, pH) fruit quality attributes were measured experimentally before the storage, using well defined techniques. 'Corelita', 'Coreal', 'Corealor', 'Coredova', 'Corejuno', 'Coretard', 'Coreagat', 'Coreor' and 'Coreprim' cultivars were registered, in the last 15 years, by Practical Scientific Institute of Horticulture and Food Technologies Chișinău, Republic of Moldova, as scab resistant varieties. The orchard trial was established at the Research Institute for Fruit Growing Pitesti, Romania in the spring 2014 on MM106 rootstock, at the spacing of 3.5 x 2 m and fruit samples were analyzed in 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons. All studied cultivars were harvested before 'Florina' cv., used as control. Fruit weight was quite variable among genotypes, between 115.15 g at 'Coreal' cv. and 212.41 g at 'Corejuno', and most of the cultivars had smaller fruits than 'Florina' cv. Firmness and total soluble solids varied from 70.5 to 82.61 N and 12.77 to 16.77%Brix. The Hunter color values L, a, b, were found to be in the range of 46.12 to 56.76, - 6.46 to 14, 13.75 to 23.72, respectively. The data about the external and internal fruit quality of new Moldavian scab resistant apple cultivars are useful for growers, in order to introduce in the new orchards only cultivars with high quality fruits.

Abstract:
Hâncu Monastery, an old monastic center in the central part of Bessarabia, had an archive and library very rich in documents, manuscripts and printed books, which disappeared after its liquidation in 1950. Some of the printed books were taken by the monks, and when it was reactivated in 1990, they were returned to the monastery. Most of the library’s books were taken to the Hâncu monastery, some of which are still preserved today. Based on the sources, we restored the list of books before the liquidation (118 books), and based on the specialized literature, field research and current literature (75 books). In the library of the Hâncu monastery, there were books printed in Romanian in: Buzau, Iași, Râmnic, Bucharest, Sibiu, Brașov, Vienna, Buda, the Neamț monastery, Chișinău and Saint Petersburg. Fewer have been identified in library and museum holdings. The oldest books in the library of this monastic center were printed in Buzău and date from the end of the 17th century, followed by those from Iași and Bucharest, from the first half of the 18th century. More numerous are the books printed at the Neamț monastery and in Chisinau from the 19th century. The monks from Hâncu were also interested in religious books in Romanian, printed in Brașov, Vienna, Buda, Saint-Petersburg, which circulated in eastern Moldova at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. Currently, the library of the Hâncu monastery is being restored, and following research we have identified over 70 Romanian books, preserved in good conditions.

Abstract:
Abstract A decade ago I translated Romeo and Juliet into Romanian for a student performance, which premiered on February 14, 2013 and has since participated in four international theatre festivals. Three years later, having joined the team of the Shakespeare for the New Millennium project – devoted to the retranslation of Shakespeare’s complete works – I embarked on what I thought would be merely a revision of my previous translation for the stage, but soon turned into a very different translatorial experience, which resulted in an entirely new Romanian version, mainly due to the twofold, yet more clearly defined purpose of the translation project. This new version, published in vol. 13 (2018) of the latest scholarly edition of Shakespeare’s complete works (2010-2019), has recently passed the performability test as well, in a compelling stage production which premiered, to great acclaim, on December 17, 2022 at the “Mihai Eminescu” National Theatre in Chișinău (Moldova). Thus, my article sets out to explore – self-reflectively, retrospectively and through the lens of Skopos theory – how in each case my approach to the task in hand, my decisions and my solutions to various translation problems were guided by what I knew or assumed about the aims, requirements and prospective audience of each translation. Thus, a translator’s practical experience is brought to bear on what has been both hailed and criticised as “a new paradigm” in translation studies, in an attempt to test its hypotheses against the actual practice (as well as the outcomes) of translating the same text for different purposes.

Victor Ababii E-mail: ababii.victor@gmail.com PhD student, Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova Head of Division, Reporting and Statistics Department, National Bank of Moldova Chișinău, Republic of Moldova https://orcid.org/0009-0008-9573-0204 Abstract: The banking system requires continuous development to enhance stability and integrity of the financial sector by implementing the latest technological tools. Maintaining a sustainable financial system, resilient to the shocks generated by the digital age and able to adapt and prevent emerging cyber risks remains a priority for supervisory institutions, in response to financial supervision and risk management framework through leveraging state-of-the-art technology for better governance and control. SupTech's primary objective is to promote inclusion in the financial sector by focusing on governance management and digital financing. It`s goal is to support the development of an inclusive financial system built on a robust digital infrastructure that enhances efficiency, transparency, and resilience. As technological innovations advance, financial services have to evolve, requiring financial institutions to adapt their surveillance technologies (SupTech) to safeguard citizen interests. Establishing both normative and technical SupTech frameworks helps supervisory authorities to eliminate gaps in internal processes, streamline workflows, fortify risk management, protect consumers, and maintain financial system stability amid ongoing market changes. Implementing a SupTech framework involves several stages: diagnosing the institution's current state, defining the purpose, vision, and objectives of SupTech, identifying key drivers and adaptive capabilities, evaluating necessary actions, and detailing steps for successful implementation. A thorough diagnosis of the supervisory institution involves IT solutions that facilitate continuous bank monitoring and offsite supervision. This diagnostic analysis includes: (1) Data products – identifying the position and trends to reach the level of AI-augment business intelligence tools; (2) Analytics – aiming to implement analytics tools perspectives; (3) Access controls - with the position on the agency - wide access; (4) Storage – oriented towards the use target of big data tools; (5) Validation and processing – aiming at the use of advanced data processing; (6) Collection – using the latest AI-based collection trends or alternative data sources. Configuring the SupTech framework involves transforming vulnerabilities into opportunities. For example, automating data flows can address deficiencies in manual data handling, risk assessment, and report generation. Implementing a data warehouse can solve challenges related to data consolidation, multiple analysis tools, system integration complexity, and data correlation. SupTech aims to provide supervisory authorities with reliable, high-quality data, aligning with best practices in governance and data management. This ensures consistency in the supervisory process and resilience to technological advancements. Digitizing surveillance processes is crucial for operational efficiency, with advanced analytics and business intelligence solutions enhancing surveillance information and decision-making. Abstract:
This article seeks to make two contributions to the literature on paradiplomacy. First, it provides an account of the foreign activities of the Gagauz autonomous region in the Republic of Moldova, which expands the empirical reach of scholarship in the post-Soviet area beyond studies of Russian regions. Second, it stresses that theory-building efforts need to incorporate consideration of foreign states that support diplomatic activities by non-central governments. Such patrons can exacerbate conflict between regional and central governments when they encourage paradiplomatic activities by regional governments to pressure the central government. Moscow’s recent relationship with Gagauzia — and the Moldovan capital Chișinău’s frustration with it — is illustrative of this theoretical point.

Abstract:
The ethno-confessional dimension of the urban economics, employment, and management in the late imperial period of Russia has been obviously understudied, with there being no generalized data. The cities of Bessarabia, particularly Chișinău, have not been investigated in this aspect either. The adequate comparative assessment of the ethnic factor in various spheres of management and economics of Chișinău is based on the indices of ethnic representation and diversity used to precess the data of the 1897 census. The analysis has shown that the factor of multiethnic urban population of Chișinău clearly manifested itself in governance, economics, and employment. Ethnicity, the corresponding cultural capital, skills, communication resources, ethno-confessional ties (within the city, region, on the intercity and the interregional level), as well as the legal conditions for certain ethno-confessional groups (mainly, Jews) remained an important factor for modernizing urban governance, economics, and employment. The comparison of ethnic representation indices has shown that the three major ethnic groups – Jews, Great Russians, and Moldovans – have debeloped a kind of mutual complementarity in the distribution of employments. The Chișinău urban minorities (Little Russians, Poles, Bulgarians, Germans, and Armenians) occupied separate niches, complementing the basic sectoral distribution of the major groups. A more detailed sectoral analysishas shown a significant number of niches with primary specialization of all – major and minor – ethnic groups in the city.

Abstract:
Still relevant today via mobility and the multicultural environment as the constitutive elements of our globalized societies, the reflections around “the cumbersome problem of the genius of languages” (Cassin 2016) join and enrich the question of living together and building oneself. In the field of literature or human sciences, the thought of the practice of languages in a situation of diglossia has forged an imaginary which often connects the passage from one language to another to a balance of power and a tension of identity. We propose an analysis of the symbolic values of the dilemma between the Romanian language and the Russian language which is at the heart of the diegesis of the novel Grădina de sticlă [The Glass Garden] by Tatiana Țîbuleac. Published in Romanian by Éditions Cartier de Chișinău and translated into several languages, including French and Spanish, the book was awarded the European Union Prize for Literature in 2019. The fictional world and the language of writing describe a symbolic abyss: the author describes in Romanian the fight with the Russian of a Moldovan orphan who is trying to rebuild herself between the two languages. In a very colorful style, the novel deploys a po(ï)etics of “between”, which also has a political dimension.

Abstract Ten years have passed from the death of conductor and professor Ioan Pavalache. Born in Chișinău, Ioan Pavalache went through the difficulties of the 1944 refuge. He perfected his studies at Bucharest, choosing to practice in the field of music. His great passion was conducting, that is why he preferred to leave the capital and to come to Iași for conducting the Gavriil Musicescu Choir of Moldovian Philharmonic and at the same time the Romanian Opera’s Choir. He linked his destiny to the activity of the Philharmonic’s Choir which he led for 32 years, raising the ensemble to a high artistic level. He did not decline the involvement in organizational activities, which is why he managed the Romanian Opera from Iași as an artistic director. The enthusiasm and the professional skills turned him toward the academic career and at The Conservatory formed plenty of young conductors, who pursue today their activity in residential institutions. A continuator of the choral tradition, Ioan Pavalache founded Camerata Choir, which had a rich activity at national and international levels. The coordinates of a life dedicated to music deserve to be known at present and not only then…

Abstract:
Printing and Old Romanian Books (1508-1830) gained a well-established position in the European Cultural Heritage by the beginning of the 16th century, with the introduction of imprints in Cyrillic typeface, ahead of many European states. The first printing press was introduced in Wallachia in 1508, when hieromonk Macarie issued several religious books in Slavonic at Târgoviște, for Romanian Orthodox Christians and Slavonic people of Europe. Prints in Romanian would enter the cultural circuit as early as the fifth decennium of the 16th century. Transylvanian typographies started their activity by printing books in Latin and German. In 1535 Johan Honterus of Brașov (1498–1549) set a typography, thus establishing the city as one of the centres for the Lutheran believe in Transylvania. In 1544, the Romanian Catechism was published at Sibiu, a text that aimed to promote the Lutheran theology amongst Romanians. Between 1535 and 1557 over 50 works were published in Latin, Greek and German in the typography of Brașov, which then spread across many European countries. After deacon Coresi came to Brașov in the second half of the 16th century, several books were published with Cyrillic typeface in Slavonic, Romanian and bilingual editions for Orthodox Christians. The Romanian printing activity came to a standstill that lasted from the last decennium of the 16th century until the fourth decennium of the 17th century. The activity restarted during the reign of Matei Basarab in Wallachia (1632-1654) and Vasile Lupu in Moldavia (1634-1653). Printing was introduced in Moldavia in 1642 and, in comparison with Wallachia and Transylvania, Romanian was used as main language. Books in Greek, intended for the Orthodox faithful within the Ottoman Empire, were also printed. After 1812, the eastern part of Moldavia was annexed by Tsarist Russia. In 1814, a printing house that provided literature for the churches of the eparchy was set up in Chișinău, the capital city of the province. Some of the books would reach countries of Central and Western Europe or even cultural centres in Ukraine and Russia. In conclusion, books printed within the Romanian countries were mainly for religious purposes. Sets were issued in Romanian, Slavonic, Latin, German and Greek, for the use of Christians throughout both Western and Eastern Europe.

Abstract This article investigates how the Bulgarian community of southern Moldova experienced the collapse of the Soviet Union. It questions why Moldova’s Bulgarian population refused offers from the Gagauz and Ukraine’s Bulgarian minority to join them in their quest for autonomy. The fact they chose not to is somewhat puzzling, as Moldova’s Bulgarian minority shared many of the same grievances as the Gagauz and Ukrainian Bulgarians, and they were offered considerable concessions to join each movement. I argue that there were several reasons for this. Firstly, Bulgarians in Taraclia distrusted the Gagauz and Ukrainian Bulgarians. Secondly, local political elites quickly realised they could extract greater concessions from Chișinău by aligning with the central government during such a tumultuous period. Finally, relations between Taraclia and Chișinău were characterized by a high degree of pragmatism.

Abstract:
●●●●● The paper focuses on assessing the situation of older persons in the Republic of Moldova, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The social diagnosis of the structural, institutional, community and intergenerational openness to the needs of this category of population highlights the pandemic challenges it faces. The methodology of the study is based on the results of the qualitative study conducted in August−September 2020 and April−May 2021 with the older people, local public administration and social workers. Through empirically reasoned findings, the paper updates the main difficulties encountered in the context of the pandemic and the depth of the social impact on the older people at community level. In addition to the direct risk to physical health, the exclusion and discrimination of the older people increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increased risk of violence and neglect, and cases of stigma at community level. The individual/family resources of the older people, especially in the case of COVID-19 infection and treatment, have played an important role in overcoming the crisis. The consequences of COVID-19 are associated with a worsening of the health of the elderly and an increase in the need for medical services. “Ageist” attitudes also occurred in the post-quarantine period, undermining the rights of older people to quality services. Thus, the need for continuous monitoring of the situation and combating "ageist" attitudes in the post-pandemic period is emphasized.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Countries of eastern Europe are considered, due to several risk factors, more vulnerable to infections with newly (re)emerging pathogens. During the last decade, in several European countries, reports of autochthonous cases of ocular thelaziosis due to Thelazia callipaeda have been published, posing a great concern from both veterinary and public health perspective. However, in the Republic of Moldova only limited epidemiological data are available regarding zoonotic vector-borne pathogens and, until now, no data exist on the zoonotic nematode T. callipaeda. Methods In September 2018, an 11-year-old dog, mixed-breed, intact male was referred to a private veterinary clinic from Chișinău, Republic of Moldova, with a history of 2 weeks of an ocular condition affecting the right eye. The ophthalmological exam revealed the presence of nematode parasites in the conjunctival sac and under the third eyelid. The collected parasites were identified by morphological techniques and molecular analysis. Results A total of 7 nematodes were collected, and 5 females and 2 males of T. callipaeda were identified morphologically. The BLAST analysis confirmed the low genetic variability of this parasite in Europe. The travel history of the patient allowed us to confirm the autochthonous character of the case. Conclusions To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of thelaziosis in dogs from the Republic of Moldova, which confirms the spreading trend of T. callipaeda and the existence of an autochthonous transmission cycle of this zoonotic parasite in the country.

Abstract:
The aim of the review is to highlight the book author's approach focused on the study of ethnicity in Gagauz fiction. D. E. Nikoglo presents the formation and development in the Republic of Moldova of the research direction that emerged in the post-Soviet period and aims to study how the ethno-cultural component is reflected in the books by writers who themselves belong to certain ethno-social groups. The author analyzes the literature as one of the mechanisms of ethnic identity construction. He reveals the attitude of Gagauz writers to regional identity, native language, religious and moral values, elements of spiritual and material culture. The review emphasizes the importance of Nikoglo’s approach to studying the ethnic identity among the Gagauz intellectual elite.

Abstract:
Abstract This article argues that post-Soviet mayors are foreign policy actors that deserve more attention from area studies and foreign policy analysis scholars. Mayors have their own diplomatic preferences and goals – rooted in geopolitical and ethnonationalist views – that they can enact using city hall institutions and networks. They can work either in harmony or in opposition with central authorities by bolstering or compromising the executive’s diplomatic goals and actions. These claims are explored in a case study of the foreign policy of Chișinău mayor Dorin Chirtoacă (2007–2017), whose diplomatic endeavors consolidated the Moldovan capital’s ties with Romania and the European Union and minimized interactions with countries in the former Soviet Union, including Russia. At times, the mayor’s actions abroad ran afoul of central authorities as he created an alternative foreign policy that undermined central foreign policy. The findings suggest that a more extensive investigation of how mayors interact with foreign actors would refine our understanding of foreign policy-making in the former Soviet Union and in Central and Eastern Europe more broadly.
