Abstract:
Chitin is an abundant polysaccharide that is mainly found in the exoskeleton of arthropods (insect, crustaceans, etc.). It is chemically and structurally similar to cellulose but chitin has an acetamido group in the second position: Chitosan, the main derivative ofchitin, is deacetylated leaving the amide groups uncovered and liable to be protonated in acid environments. These together with other features provide chitin and chitosan with a range of distinctive functional properties that including structural qualities, adsorption capacity, reactivity, biocompatibility, bioactivity and biodegrad

Abstract:
The production of streptomycin using Streptomyces griseus using two types of chitin as a substrate was studied using a variety of fermentation techniques. Commercial chitin was obtained (Sigma) and comprised chemically purified crab shell. Pre-fermented chitin was the solid product from the lactic acid fermentation of shrimp waste using Lactobacillus paracasei A3. Bioassay, HPLC and FTIR methods were developed during this project for the quantification of streptomycin both in liquid phase and adsorbed on solid chitin surfaces. Shake flask experiments were carried out to determine basic product

Abstract:
The study of the regulation of chitin synthesis in the pathogen Candida albicans is a challenging field. It not only offers a possibility of a better understanding of the dimorphic transition but also may help in the development of an effective antifungal. The suggestion that the regulation of cell wall synthesis may be closely coupled to the turgor pressure of the fungus has been investigated. The synthesis of chitin by the enzyme chitin synthase was studied under conditions of osmotic stress. Mixed membrane fractions from protoplasts of C.albicans incubated in medium of low osm

Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Previous studies have indicated that fermentation with yeast strains whose cell walls contain higher chitin levels may lead to reduced wine haze formation. In order to adjust cell wall chitin levels, more information on the regulation of chitin synthesis in wine-relevant yeast is required. Yeast cells are known to increase chitin levels when subjected to certain environmental changes such as an increase in temperature. The main aim of this project was to investigate chitin accumulation and synthesis in wine yeast strains when ex

Chitin, chitosan recovered from fly crabs shells have been investigated by the elemental analysis, potentiometric titraton and FT–IR spectrometry methods. The molecular weght of chitosan was determined by measuring their viscosity. The adsorption kinetics of reactive dye and equilibrium conditions has been investigated. The adsorption of reactive dye on chitin and chitosan proceeds according to pseudo – second – order kinetic equation. Adsorption investigations under equilibrium conditions showed that. Theses results were fitted by both Langmuir and Freudlich models.
