Abstract:

Abstract. The paper compares two workflows for the achievement of 3D models aimed at in-depth studies on the geometric features of Cultural Heritage artefacts and their dissemination. The purpose is the outlining of pros and cons of different techniques coming from entertainment and video games industry, starting from highly reliable 3D documentation of cultural assets, i.e. architectural/archaeological/urban sites. Two different possible applications are described: (i) procedural modelling used for understanding and visualising reconstruction hypotheses of the vaulted pavilions at Hadrian’s Villa, Tivoli, Rome; (ii) optimisation of 3D high-detailed models, as input files, turned into visual reliable and highly portable assets for game-engines. The first case study is focussed on creating a flexible model for evalueting reconstruction hypotheses and supplying restorers with useful hints for shape completion of ruined pavilions. The second case study makes available detailed digital contents for storytelling historical and cultural events in an attractive way, as in the case of the urban explorative model of Chiuro, a small town in northern Italy.

Abstract The prime objective in the surgical treatment of Chiari malformation (CM) and/or syringomyelia (SM) is based on the restoration of the normal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics at the craniovertebral junction through the creation of a large artificial cisterna magna. In this case a patient came to our hospital with type 1 chiary malformation having large syrinx which underwent posterior fossa decompression by midline sub occipital craniectomy with subpial cerebellar tonsillar resection which after one year of follow up we have found significant resolution of syrinx radiologically.

Chiaro Hotel is a one-star hotel in Sidoarjo that is located at a strategic location. It is clean and comfortable family hotel. The problem of Chiaro Hotel is lack of promotion. Even though Chiaro Hotel has had some promotional tools, such as short promotional video, marketing booklet, and flyer, those promotional tools do not give good impact for the hotel because they do not show the uniqueness of Chiaro Hotel. Therefore, I make a website to solve Chiaro Hotel’s problem. This website can reach people in many places. Also, this website can help Chiaro Hotel to show the uniqueness that the hotel has. For my project, the website is mostly in English. The features in this website are “Home”, “About Us”, “Room”, “Facilities”, “Latest News”, ”Contact Us”, and “Booking Feature”. The benefits that Chiaro Hotel can get from this website are to be well-known among its competitors and get more customers.

Abstract:
Chiuri trees and beekeeping are the major sources of livelihood among the Chepang community. The study was performed to assess the role of Chiuri on livelihood improvement of the Chepang community through beekeeping and to analyze the efforts of CFUGs to conserve the Chiuri in Silinge Community Forest User Group, Raksirang-6, Makawanpur district, Nepal. Focus Group Discussion, Key Informant Survey and Individual interview in households were carried out for the study from January to March 2019. With the increasing demand for organic honey made from Chiuri, the locals of the Chepang village in Makawanpur have started generating a good income from beekeeping. The majority (63%) of the respondents reported that the trends of the status of beekeeping were increasing in households. The selling of honey was the main source of income for the people of Silinge CFUGs. 1/3 of households earned the money in the range of NRs 200,000 (US$ 1,720.83) - NRs 300,000 (US$ 2,581.24). Physical capital and financial capital have significantly increased, whereas human, social and natural capitals were in increasing trends. The relationship between Chiuri and honey bees was very positive for both. The marketing system of Chiuri is not well developed in the study area. The Chepang community will get more prices after certifying their products as organic. Organic Certification of Nepal (OCN) should conduct studies about organic honey.

Abstract:
Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of the urinary chiro- and myo-inositol levels in predicting type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).Subjects and methods: A total of 212 normal controls and 101 type 2 diabetic patients were enrolled this study. The concentrations of urinary chiro- and myo-inositol were measured by high performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. Results: The concentration of urinary chiro-inositol was significantly higher in the diabetic subjects (2.24 ± 5.18 ng/L) than those in the control group (0.38 ± 0.62 ng/L;p< 0.001). The urinary myo-inositol level of the diabetic subjects (36.95 ± 37.77 ng/L) was also significantly higher than that of the controls (8.17 ± 13.29 ng/L;p< 0.001). The urinary chiro-inositol multiplied by myo-inositol level of the diabetic subjects (148.10 ± 544.91) was significantly higher than in the controls (5.12 ± 24.15;p< 0.001). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for the urinary chiro-inositol multiplied by myo-inositol level to predict T2DM was 0.840 (confidence interval 0.789–0.891,p< 0.001). The cut-off value for the urinary chiro-inositol multiplied by myo-inositol level to predict T2DM was 2.20 (sensitivity 81.3%, specificity 70.3%).Conclusions: The urinary chiro- and myo-inositol concentrations were increased in the type 2 diabetic patients and the urinary chiro- times the myo-inositol was considered to be a sufficient marker in predicting T2DM.

Abstract:
Crop seeds accumulate soluble carbohydrates as part of their maturation process. In legume seeds, the major soluble carbohydrates are sucrose and its galactosides raffinose, stachyose and verbascose. In buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) seeds, the major soluble carbohydrates are sucrose and galactosides of d-chiro-inositol, named fagopyritols. This study was conducted to determine changes in soluble carbohydrate accumulation in embryos of buckwheat seeds after feeding solutions containing the free cyclitols D-chiro-inositol, myo-inositol and d-pinitol to stem–leaf–seed explants. Feeding D-chiro-inositol to explants resulted in a fourfold to fivefold increase in the accumulation of free d-chiro-inositol, fagopyritol A1 and fagopyritol B1 in embryos of mature seeds, but resulted in 30% less embryo dry weight compared to the control treatment without cyclitols. Feeding myo-inositol to buckwheat explants increased d-chiro-inositol in leaves and increased accumulation of fagopyritol A1 and fagopyritol B1 fivefold in embryos, fagopyritol A2 and fagopyritol B2 fourfold; fagopyritol A3 and fagopyritol B3 were also detected, with no reduction in accumulated embryo dry weight. Feeding d-pinitol to buckwheat explants resulted in accumulation of free d-pinitol in mature embryos, but not galactopinitols. D-Pinitol, galactopinitol A and galactopinitol B were not detected in embryos from explants fed solutions without d-pinitol. Feeding d-pinitol also resulted in reduced D-chiro-inositol accumulation by buckwheat seeds. The results indicate that myo-inositol may be the precursor to d-chiro-inositol synthesis, and fagopyritols accumulated in response to d-chiro-inositol availability in the embryo. We suggest that increasing myo-inositol in buckwheat maternal tissues may be an effective means to enhance the accumulation of D-chiro-inositol and fagopyritols in seeds, compounds that may be beneficial for the treatment of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.

Abstract:
In this review we discuss the biological significance of D-chiro-inositol, originally discovered as a component of a putative mediator of intracellular insulin action, where as a putative mediator, it accelerates the dephosphorylation of glycogen synthase and pyruvate dehydrogenase, rate limiting enzymes of non-oxidative and oxidative glucose disposal.Early studies demonstrated a linear relationship between its decreased urinary excretion and the degree of insulin resistance present. When tissue contents, including muscle, of type 2 diabetic subjects were assayed, they demonstrated a more general body deficiency. Administration of D-chiro-inositol to diabetic rats, Rhesus monkeys and now to humans accelerated glucose disposal and sensitized insulin action.A defectin vivoin the epimerization of myoinositol to chiro-inositol in insulin sensitive tissues of the GK type 2 diabetic rat has been elucidated. Thus, administered D-chiro-inositol may act to bypass a defective normal epimerization of myo-inositol to D-chiro-inositol associated with insulin resistance and act to at least partially restore insulin sensitivity and glucose disposal.

Abstract:
Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) seeds accumulate sucrose, raffinose, stachyose and lesser amounts of galactopinitol A, galactopinitol B and fagopyritol B1 in axis and cotyledon tissues as part of the seed maturation process. Somatic embryos appear to be deficient in D-pinitol and galactopinitols, indicating a lack of synthesis by embryo tissues in vitro. Isolated immature soybean zygotic embryos were fed myo-inositol, D-pinitol, D-chiro-inositol and sucrose, individually and in combination, to evaluate the role of substrate availability on galactosyl cyclitol accumulation during precocious maturation. Feeding myo-inositol transiently doubled galactinol accumulation with little effect on other soluble carbohydrates. Feeding D-pinitol increased free D-pinitol 8-fold, galactopinitol A 4.5-fold and galactopinitol B 4.2-fold. Stachyose concentration was 2-fold higher in cotyledons after feeding D-pinitol than after feeding D-chiro-inositol. Feeding D-chiro-inositol increased fagopyritol B1 17-fold in the axis and 7-fold in the cotyledons, but did not increase other soluble carbohydrates. Feeding D-pinitol and D-chiro-inositol together reduced uptake of D-chiro-inositol and steady-state accumulation of galactinol and galactopinitols by 50%, compared to feeding D-pinitol alone. Increasing sucrose concentration from 0 to 200 mM had no effect. Recombinant soybean galactinol synthase, heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli, catalysed the synthesis of fagopyritol B1 and galactinol, but not galactopinitols. These results were consistent with the following interpretations: D-pinitol and D-chiro-inositol were transported from maternal tissues and not synthesized in the embryo, D-chiro-inositol uptake into embryos may be reduced by D-pinitol, fagopyritol B1 was synthesized by galactinol synthase while galactopinitols were not, and fagopyritol B1 and galactopinitols accumulated in response to the supply of free D-chiro-inositol and D-pinitol to embryos.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Chiari malformations are characterized by the cerebellar tonsils extending into the upper cervical spinal canal. Many patients with Chiari malformation experience headaches or develop a cyst in the spinal cord inferior to the cerebellar tonsils. Some symptomatic patients benefit from a surgical procedure to enlarge the foramen magnum and others do not. The causes of symptoms and variable response to surgery remain unknown. Imaging studies have shown that patients with a Chiari malformation exhibit increased cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) velocities compared to subjects without the malformation. Improved methods of analyzing the CSF fluid dynamics are needed to evaluate the impact of increased fluid velocities on pressure differentials in the upper cervical spinal canal and the potential impact of surgery on flow dynamics in patient specific geometries.

Abstract:
One major challenge in large-scale experiments is the analytical capacity to contrast ongoing results with domain knowledge. We approach this challenge by constructing a domain-specific knowledge base, which is queried during workflow execution. We introduce K-Chiron, an integrated solution that combines a state-of-the-art automatic knowledge base construction (KBC) system to Chiron, a well-established workflow engine. In this work we experiment in the context of Political Sciences to show how KBC may be used to improve human-in-the-loop (HIL) support in scientific experiments. While HIL in traditional domain expert supervision is done offline, in K-Chiron it is done online, i.e. at runtime. We achieve results in less laborious ways, to the point of enabling a breed of experiments that could be unfeasible with traditional HIL. Finally, we show how provenance data could be leveraged with KBC to enable further experimentation in more dynamic settings.

Abstract:
Patients with Chiari I malformations have increased cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) velocities compared to subjects without the malformation. Improved methods of analyzing the CSF fluid dynamics are needed to evaluate the impact of increased fluid velocities on pressure differentials in the upper cervical spinal canal and the potential impact of surgery on flow dynamics in patient-specific geometries. Here, a numerical technique based on the boundary elements method (BEM) for modeling the CSF flow within the spinal canal is presented. Results for velocity and pressure throughout the spinal canal were obtained at flow rates representative of different phases of the cardiac cycle for a healthy geometry and a Chiari model. In the healthy geometry, peak CSF velocities occurred anterolateral to the spinal cord at all flow rates. Partially obstructing the subarachnoid space increased peak systolic and diastolic velocities and shear stresses anteriorly. In addition, in the obstructed (Chiari) model, stagnation regions were evident posteriorly. The effects of surgical treatment on these CSF flow patterns warrant further study.

Abstract:
In this study, we employed time-resolved three directional velocity encoded phase contrast MRI (4DMRI) to quantify cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) movement within the complete cervical spinal subarachnoid space (SSS). The 4DMRI measurements were compared to a 3D computational fluid dynamics simulation (3DCFD) of the same space in healthy subjects and patients with Chiari I malformation. The results were assessed in terms of peak CSF flow velocities in the foot and head direction and flow patterns at nine axial locations along the cervical spine. It was found that the peak flow velocities measured by 4DMRI were consistently greater than those quantified by 3DCFD. In healthy subjects the 4DMRI flow velocities and patterns compared better to the 3DCFD than in Chiari I patients. Peak velocities had the greatest differences in the upper cervical spine of Chiari patients, where the 4DMRI quantified greater fluid jets at the craniocervical junction than the 3DCFD. Overall, these results represent the first quantitative comparison of 4DMRI to 3DCFD of CSF motion.

Abstract:
Recent developments in imaging systems have seen the implementation of a radar matched-filtering approach. The goal of the imaging system is to obtain information about an unknown object embedded in the system, by controlling the parameters of the input and measuring the response to the known input. The main merit of using matched filtering in imaging systems is the improvement of Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR). However, the correlation process used in matched filtering may result in a loss of resolution. One way to compensate for lost resolution is via pulse compression. Linear frequency modulated sinusoidal waveforms (chirps) have the property of pulse compression after correlation. Hence, both SNR and resolution can be enhanced by matched-filtering and pulse compression with a chirp. However, the theory behind the effect of chirp parameters on resolution is still not clear. In this paper, a one-dimensional theory of matched-filter imaging with a pulse compressed linear frequency modulated sinusoidal chirp is developed. The effect of the chirp parameters on the corresponding signal is investigated, and guidelines for choosing the chirp parameters for resolution considerations are given based on the developed theory and simulations. The results showed that by manipulating the center frequency, bandwidth, and duration of the chirp, the resolution can be easily enhanced.

Abstract:
Abstract This work addresses the strategy of AES Corporation (AES Chivor) in order to extend the life of La Esmeralda reservoir to support Colombia’s future energy demand. Chivor Hydropower Plant entered into service in 1978 and has a capacity of 1000 MW, 8 % of Colombia’s demand. It is first described how the Colombian electricity energy mix is composed. Then, La Esmeralda reservoir, which is used by Chivor for power generation, is described; sediment management plans and maintenance costs for equipment and infrastructure are addressed. Then, sediment dynamics studies that have been done in order to determine life expectancy of La Esmeralda reservoir are listed. Such studies have been used to execute the Chivor’s Life Extension Project, which considers the modification of intakes as the best option to extend the life of the reservoir for at least 50 years, among several alternatives that were evaluated by a panel of international experts. This represents a challenge from the engineering point of view, and the project will be shown as a successful example for a country with such dependence on hydropower generation. Modernizing existing infrastructure without affecting the operation, as in this case, is crucial to show how a sustainable sediment management plan and technological development are necessary to extend life of hydropower generation projects, and to help meeting energy demand in a sustainable way for countries such as Colombia with a growing economy.
