Abstract:
This thesis addresses UK students’ university choice using discrete choice methods and micro-data obtained from Higher Education Statistical Agency for graduates between 2006 and 2010. The thesis consists of three chapters with each addressing a different aspect of students’ choice. The studies are intended to provide policy-makers and other decision-makers with valuable information that will help them to implement strategies and policies for better higher education. Some work in the literature has been dedicated to students’ university choice. This thesis explores this body of work and builds on it, extends it and improves what is previously known in the literature. The aim of the first chapter is to investigate what affects students’ university choice. It contributes to the literature by establishing the best method to do so. Two models are used: the standard conditional logit and conditional logit with, what is called in this paper, alternative specific constants. Conditional logit with alternative specific constants improves on conditional logit twofold: it deals with unobserved university characteristics and improves the model fit. The results show that the probability of attending a university decreases with an increase in tuition fees and distance between students’ home and the university, and decreases in students’ socio-economic status. The second chapter further investigates the importance of distance on students’ university choice and it contributes to the literature by calculating the willingness to pay of students for distance to university. The chosen models are estimated for different socio-economic group of students separately. This methodology allows for meaningful comparison between socio-economic groups and produces more reliable estimates due to the fact that it accommodates for different unobserved characteristics of universities for different groups of students. The results show that students with the highest socio-economic status are not affected or have a positive utility of distance. The willingness to pay of other socio-economic groups are mixed and depend on the university characteristics used in the model. The third chapter focuses on students’ attitudes towards costs and benefits of university degree by calculating the discount rate of future income using marginal utility of graduate income and tuition fees. In addition, the chapter shows how use of consideration sets of universities for each student improves the model fit. The results show that students have a normal discount rate around 1% without consideration sets. The discount rate becomes negative in all models apart from one, when consideration sets are used.

Abstract:
This thesis consists of three essays that examine issues on university attendance behavior, factorsof university completion, and the labor market value of a university diploma in Sweden. Essay [I] analyzes how the rapid expansion of higher education that increased the geographicalaccessibility to higher education in the 1990s affected university enrollment decisions amongvarious socioeconomic groups of young adults in Sweden. The empirical findings show that theprobability of enrollment in university education increases with accessibility to universityeducation. The results also indicate that accessibility adds to the likelihood of attending auniversity within the region of residence. Access to higher education more locally seems to havedecreased the social distance to higher education, meaning that the option of attending highereducation, as compared to entering the local labor market after upper secondary school, hasbecome a more common and a more natural alternative for more socioeconomic groups insociety. Essay [II] compares the performance of students in universities built before and after the largedecentralization and expansion of the higher educational system in Sweden, starting in the late1970s. Two outcome measures are used: (i) whether or not the student has obtained a degreewithin seven years after she initiated her studies; and (ii) whether or not she obtained 120 creditpoints (the requirement for most undergraduate degrees) within seven years. Controlling forseveral background variables as well as GPA scores in a binomial probit model, we show thatstudents at old universities are about 5 percentage points more likely to get a degree and about 9percentage points more likely to obtain 120 credit points. However, in an extended bivariatemodel where we consider selection on unobservables into university type, we cannot reject thepossibility of no difference in performance between the two university types. Essay [III] analyzes the labor market value of a university diploma (sheepskin) in Sweden. Incontrast to previous studies, this study only focuses on Swedish university students who havethree years of full time university education or more − where some have obtained a universitydegree, others not. The results show that for male students, the wage premium of possessing adegree, i.e. the sheepskin effect, is roughly 5-8 percent. For women, it is about 6-7 percent forthose who have completed four years of fulltime or more. For students who attended a moreprestigious university in the metropolitan areas in Sweden and majored in the natural sciences, asheepskin effect of roughly 13 percent for men and 22 percent for women is traced. However, this result did not hold among students who attended. Keywords: Higher education, university enrollment; university choice; accessibility; universitycompletion; selection bias; propensity score matching, sheepskin, human capital.

Abstract:
The rapid expansion of university places in Hong Kong between the late 1980s and the middle of 1990s has brought about a number of changes to the local higher education scene. Primary among these changes is the increased choice of university education for students. Along with the widened choice, new consumer groups and a more competitive market environment are created. Consequently higher educational institutions have to place more emphasis on promoting and marketing their own programmes and courses. It appears that a wide array of student recruitment activities take place without a systematic analysis of the factors affecting student university choice. The lack of local research on university choice suggests that researching into this area to examine students' decision-making process would be worthwhile. This study presents the findings of a questionnaire survey of 1,684 first-year undergraduate entrants to a university in Hong Kong. Two sets of data were collected: first, the importance of twenty-eight identified factors in affecting student university choice; second, the students' rating of the University on these factors. The study aims to identify the influential factors in student university choice, and measure the strengths and weaknesses of the surveyed University against these factors.

Abstract:
Answering questions posed in natural language is a key task in Artificial Intelligence. However, producing a successful Question Answering (QA) system is challenging, since it requires text understanding, information retrieval, information extraction and text production. This task is made even harder by the difficulties in collecting reliable datasets and in evaluating techniques, two pivotal points for machine learning approaches. This has led many researchers to focus on Multiple-Choice Question Answering (MCQA), a special case of QA where systems must select the correct answers from a small set of alternatives. One particularly interesting type of MCQA is solving Standardized Tests, such as Foreign Language Proficiency exams, Elementary School Science exams and University Entrance exams. These exams provide easy-to-evaluate challenging multiple-choice questions of varying difficulties about large, but limited, domains. The Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio (ENEM) is a High School level exam taken every year by students all over Brazil. It is widely used by Brazilian universities as an entrance exam and is the world\'s second biggest university entrance examination in number of registered candidates. This exam consists in writing an essay and solving a multiple-choice test comprising questions on four major topics: Humanities, Language, Science and Mathematics. Questions inside each major topic are not segmented by standard scholar disciplines (e.g. Geography, Biology, etc.) and often require interdisciplinary reasoning. Moreover, the previous editions of the exam and their solutions are freely available online, making it a suitable benchmark for MCQA. In this work we automate solving the ENEM focusing, for simplicity, on purely textual questions that do not require mathematical thinking. We formulate the problem of answering multiple-choice questions as finding the candidate-answer most similar to the statement. We investigate two approaches for measuring textual similarity of candidate-answer and statement. The first approach addresses this as a Text Information Retrieval (IR) problem, that is, as a problem of finding in a database the most relevant document to a query. Our queries are made of statement plus candidate-answer and we use three different corpora as database: the first comprises plain-text articles extracted from a dump of the Wikipedia in Portuguese language; the second contains only the text given in the question\'s header and the third is composed by pairs of question and correct answer extracted from ENEM assessments. The second approach is based on Word Embedding (WE), a method to learn vectorial representation of words in a way such that semantically similar words have close vectors. WE is used in two manners: to augment IR\'s queries by adding related words to those on the query according to the WE model, and to create vectorial representations for statement and candidate-answers. Using these vectorial representations we answer questions either directly, by selecting the candidate-answer that maximizes the cosine similarity to the statement, or indirectly, by extracting features from the representations and then feeding them into a classifier that decides which alternative is the answer. Along with the two mentioned approaches we investigate how to enhance them using WordNet, a structured lexical database where words are connected according to some relations like synonymy and hypernymy. Finally, we combine different configurations of the two approaches and their WordNet variations by creating an ensemble of algorithms found by a greedy search. This ensemble chooses an answer by the majority voting of its components. The first approach achieved an average of 24% accuracy using the headers, 25% using the pairs database and 26.9% using Wikipedia. The second approach achieved 26.6% using WE indirectly and 28% directly. The ensemble achieved 29.3% accuracy. These results, slightly above random guessing (20%), suggest that these techniques can capture some of the necessary skills to solve standardized tests. However, more sophisticated techniques that perform text understanding and common sense reasoning might be required to achieve human-level performance.
A segunda abordagem conseguiu 26.6% de acurácia usando WE indiretamente e 28% diretamente.

Abstract:
Background: There has been an increasing trend of more Swedish higher education institutions competing for international students in response to international student mobility trends, self-management and budget securement, and government-backed recruitment campaigns. An emerging stream of higher education research is brand personality, and it may represent a robust basis for differentiation between many universities competing for student recruitment. Therefore, the study was built to get a deeper understanding of the impact of university brand personality on international students' choices. Purpose: Given the importance of brand personality for higher education institutions to deal with the international competition or differentiate themselves, the purpose of this study is to explore international student's perception of the university brand personality that affects the selection of a Swedish university. Method: To address the purpose of the exploratory study, the qualitative research approach was applied, combining with interpretivism philosophy. Semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions were conducted with 11 international first-year students. By utilizing abductive reasoning, the data was analyzed and interpreted through thematic analysis. Conclusion: Cosmopolitan is perceived as the most distinct brand personality dimension that Jönköping University possesses. Nevertheless, the degree of perception among foreign students regarding each brand personality dimension is different during the decision-making process. In the early stages, the potential students perceive prestige as the most distinct and significant dimension, followed by cosmopolitan. However, when the consumption process nears, cosmopolitan becomes an essentially more important dimension. Further, lively and sincerity are found to partly influence students' choice for higher education.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between eco-friendliness as part of University Social Responsibility (USR) and the impact it has on students and their attraction towards a university. Previous research have so far not investigated on such a connection due to a general focus on the private sector, companies and therefore Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). However, the literature is full of workable information, theories and conclusions through the acceptance of a specific model considering students as customers. It makes the assumptions being made within the private sector applicable to the public sector of the higher education. The latter is a driving force for any country’s economy by training and shaping a large number of future professionals and citizens. Yet, so far, barely any association has been made with another growing consideration of our developed economies: eco-friendliness and the protection of the environment. The present quantitative study seeks to find the existence of a positive impact of the implementation of eco-friendly measures by Linköping University on Swedish students, notably in terms of attractiveness. Our findings demonstrate that most of LiU Swedish students are attracted towards an eco-friendly university, around 44% of them consider eco-friendliness as a university choice factor and the performance of Linköping University (LiU) in this domain is largely appreciated. Therefore, LiU benefits from a positive public image through its eco-friendly profile. It thus enables and favors attractiveness among Swedish students, even if the latter is seen as improvable, notably through its advertisement since it is thought to be a possible competitive advantage.

Abstract:
A mini-dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Education in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Education in the Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education at the University of Zululand, 2016
This study examined the factors influencing career choice. The objectives of this study were to determine factors influencing career choice among the University of Zululand students. Secondly, to find out whether there are any relations between career choice and the following variables; gender, age and race and, finally, to determine the agreement among ranks assigned by students to social institutions. The methodology of the study comprised of field and case study research design. SPSS was used to analyse data which consisted of 200 participants who correctly responded to the questionnaires. The sample was selected from the first year students at the University Of Zululand (UNIZULU). The findings indicated that mothers and the media played a role in influencing students in their career choice. Students agreed that the home played the greatest role in choosing their careers. Most students had a positive perception of their chosen career. Finally, variables such as age, gender and race did not play a significant role in choosing a career amongst this particular group of students.

Abstract:
This research aims to identify the process by which students form images of universities, the extent to which students’ favourable evaluations of image attractiveness lead to student-university identification, and the extent to which perceived image attractiveness and student-university identification determine planned behaviour, i.e., supportive intentions, including student choice of institution. Full-service international branch campuses offering complete degree programmes are a fairly new phenomenon on the higher education landscape and potential students have limited knowledge about them and the institutions that own them. It is interesting therefore to discover whether these students do in fact hold images of international branch campuses. The research was conducted in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the country that hosts more international branch campuses than any other worldwide. The study adopted a deductive, quantitative method, which involved a survey questionnaire completed by potential university students (year 12 and 13 high school students). This research stands out from earlier work on organisational identification, as earlier studies focused on existing consumers or employees while this study considers potential consumers (students). The research included a pilot study that involved individual interviews with members of the target population, which ensured research design validity. Data were analysed using a variety of techniques including exploratory factor analysis, multiple regression and structural equation modelling. The findings of this study provide support for the proposition that individuals can identify with universities in the absence of formal membership – with no or minimal previous interaction between the individual and the university – and that student-university identification can lead to supportive intentions among prospective students. These findings suggest that institutions would benefit from articulating and communicating their identities clearly, coherently and in a persuasive manner, and emphasising those aspects of the university’s identity that prospective students will perceive as prestigious, distinctive and similar to their own identities.

Abstract:
Every year university bound graduating high school students are faced with the problem of selecting a post secondary institution. The selection process typically spans a number of years and involves considering many factors. Identifying those factors that influence students during the selection process was the goal of this study. Two hundred twenty-seven first year university students attending one of three degree granting institutions in Alberta were surveyed by means of a questionnaire to determine those factors considered during the university selection process. Correlations, means, analyses of variance and qualitative data provided the statistical and descriptive information for interpretation. The principal finding of this study was that parents, particularly mothers, are the most influential persons reported to affect the process. The factors which tend to be important to students at the University of Alberta were not the same factors important to students attending Camrose Lutheran College and the University of Lethbridge, the two smaller universities. University of Alberta students value reputation of the institution, reputation of the program, variety of courses offered, and proximity to home as important factors in their choice. Camrose Lutheran College and University of Lethbridge students value low student/professor ratio, low student population, and reputation of institution. This study may provide an increase in understanding of the selection process and thus assist those involved in guiding students through the process.

Abstract:
The University of Pretoria has experienced a significant increase in student numbers in recent years. This increase has necessarily impacted on the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. The department is understaffed in terms of lecturing staff, which impacts negatively on postgraduate study and research outputs. The disproportion between teaching staff and the lecturing load and research demands has led to an excessive grading and administrative load on staff. The department decided to use multiple choice questions in assessments that could be graded by means of computer software. The responses of the multiple choice questions are captured on optical reader forms that are processed centrally. Multiple choice questions are combined with constructed response questions (written questions) in semester tests and end-of-term examinations. The quality of the multiple choice questions has never before been determined. This research project asks the research question: How do the multiple choice questions in mathematics, as posed to first-year engineering students at the University of Pretoria, comply with the principles of good assessment for determining quality? A quantitative secondary analysis is performed on data that was sourced from the first-year engineering calculus module WTW 158 for the years 2015, 2016 and 2017. The study shows that, in most cases, the questions are commendable with well-balanced indices of discrimination and difficulty including well-chosen functional distractors. The item analysis included determining the cognitive level of each multiple choice question. The problematic questions are highlighted and possible recommendations are made to improve or revise such questions for future usage.

Al-Fattal, Anas. "Understanding student choice of university and marketing strategies in Syrian private higher education." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2010. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/1115/.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this study is student choice and marketing in the private higher education sector in Syria. The literature review shows two contrasting attitudes regarding introducing marketing into education. Over the last few decades, the need for marketing has become more critical for organisational efficiency. Reasons that make marketing an important aspect in reflecting positively on an institution and the community are highlighted. The literature review concludes that the literature on marketing higher education is mainly based in Western contexts and cultures. It also highlights the paucity of literature combining strategies of marketing higher education and student choice of university, hence the focus of the study. The study is underpinned by three research questions aiming at investigating (1) the process of student choice of university, (2) marketing strategies at private universities in Syria, and (3) the relationship between student choice of university and marketing strategies. As the research investigates two distinct areas, it is set within a composite theoretical framework which draws on the process of student choice of university, and institutional marketing strategies. The composite model combines two marketing models from the literature, ‘marketing mix’ and ‘student choice of university’. I demonstrate how these two models complement each other, as together they form further comprehensive marketing strategies. The design of each marketing mix element is dependent on student choice analysis, and similarly understanding each step in the student choice of university is dependent on the elements of the mix. The research was conducted in three phases. The first phase was exploratory, which served in providing initial insights into the context, improving research design, and testing the theoretical framework. The first phase involved a pilot study and interviews with students. The second phase was a survey of 335 students at three private universities in Syria, which established a basis for generalisation. In the third research phase, three in-depth case studies were conducted at three Syrian private universities. Multiple sources of data were used to understand relevant issues of these cases, which were documents, researcher diary, andinterviews with three different groups: administrative members of staff, students and parents. The findings validate the application of the theoretical models, ‘marketing mix’ and ‘student choice of university’, in the Syrian private higher education context. Some modifications to these models are suggested due to contextual factors. The findings show that the process of student choice of university consists of five steps, being motives, information gathering, evaluating alternatives, decision implementation, and post-choice evaluation. The findings also show the marketing mix in Syria to consist of five elements, which are teaching and learning, customer centred focus, finance, branding and environment. An association between student choice of university and marketing strategies is highlighted and a composite model, the atom marketing model, is created on the basis of evidence collected. The study reveals a two-way matrix interrelationship between the two areas; it is a “push-pull” relationship, where each is influencing and shaping the other. The study contributes to knowledge in the way it researches theories from the West in a different context. It also demonstrates a detailed description of the relationship between two different marketing models.

Abstract:
Class of 2011 Abstract
OBJECTIVES: To examine what factors influence students to enroll at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy versus other schools. METHODS: This descriptive, cross-sectional study surveyed students attending the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy in the fall of 2010. The independent variable was out-of-state students versus in-state students. The primary dependent variables were students’ rating the importance of factors that influenced them to choose the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy. Demographic variables included age, class, year, and residency status. RESULTS Surveys were completed by 308 students of a total of 385 students (79%) enrolled in the fall of 2010 in one of the four classes . Overall, school rank and cost of tuition were equally important to residents (P=0.089) and rank was the most important factor to non-residents (P=0.045). All students rated class size (p = 0.005), campus size (p = 0.012), diversity of students (p = 0.019), availability of campus housing (p = 0.025), availability of campus clubs (p = 0.004), and safety of campus (p = 0.015) as important factors. First year students rated financial aid offer (p=0.002) as significantly more important than second and third year students; cost of living (p=0.013) as significantly more important than second year; influence of family (p=0.035) as significantly more important than third and fourth year students; and presence of friends or relatives who attended this College of Pharmacy was significantly more important than fourth year students (p=0.012). CONCLUSION: School rank and cost of tuition were equally important for residents, however, for non-residents school rank was the most important factor when deciding to attend the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy.

Abstract:
This study was undertaken to determine where adolescents obtain their health care. A survey form was sent to four high schools in this state which reported urban, suburban, and rural populations. This questionnaire contained 18 items designed to determine demographic statistics about the study population as well as to identify their source of health care. Results from the 569 respondents were tabulated and analyzed. Most of this 15-16 year old adolescent group considered their doctor to be a family doctor. It was to a family doctor that most adolescents turned to for medical care. Other physicians and health care providers delivered some of the care but usually the family physician was the most frequent care giver. Adolescents are felt to be an underserved group of patients and the results of this study could be used to channel more efforts toward delivery of their health care. Conclusions drawn here reveal that family physicians do provide most of an adolescent's care.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

Abstract:

ABSTRACT

The recent years mark the appearance of many Eco-label schemes in the attempt ofhelping consumer to recognize the products with less harm to the environment, forexample: Euro flower, Nordic swan, Blue Angle, Krav. These labels belong to the thirdparties, which get supports from government with object of achieving sustainabledevelopment. However there is still lacking a clear understanding about theeffectiveness of Eco-label in consumer consumption activities due to the lack ofresearch working on that field. We take this challenge as an opportunity to do the studyof investigating about the role of Eco-label in the process of leading consumers topurchase Eco-products. The research focuses on Swedish university students‘ choice onecological food.

A number of Swedish students in Umeå University, Umeå, Sweden are selected as thegroup of respondents for this study. In order to understand the effectiveness of Eco-labelin students‘ food products choice, four key factors are taken into account to invest igate:students‘ awareness on Eco-label, students‘ knowledge on Eco-label & ecological food, students‘ environment motivation, and the availability of ecological food & Eco-labelinformation. The demographic characters including gender and education backgroundsare known as the influence factors among these four factors.

The results proved the effectiveness of Eco-label as the guiding instrument for students‘product choice towards ecological food. It provided the evidence that three of these fourfactors above (accept the only one external factors: availability) can encourage students‘attention to Eco-label. In additional, student‘s attention to Eco-label can actually leadtheir purchase behavior on ecological food. With findings and recommendations, thestudy is expected to contribute to the field of ecological consumer behavior marketingresearch. However, the representative of the results is risky because of the limitedcontext and sample of the study.

Abstract:
This dissertation addresses the validation of the hypothesis there is a general sense that violence and security perception influence the use of sustainable travel modes. The research characterizes the issue of security perception among University of São Paulo (Brazil) users and identifies the way the sense of security and violence occurrences are related to the travel mode choice. An online survey on security perception and the way its participants access the campus was conducted. The target relationships were explored by Decision Tree (DT) algorithms. An initial exploratory analysis revealed occurrences of violence and reports of insecurity perception were strongly correlated on streets around the campus. The time analysis of violence distribution presented the incidents concentrated at night and during the week. The study also showed that security perception variation according to gender and travel mode choice is less sensitive to security perception than to the occurrence of violence, or type of affiliation to the university. Finally, DT algorithms explored the relation of spatially treated variables (i.e. route length to the university, density of violence occurrences and insecurity reports on the route) to mode choice. The results also showed that distance to the campus was relevant to the mode choice only in routes not strongly considered unsafe. In routes of higher insecurity perception, the share of nonmotorized modes was more expressive and the largest participation of sustainable modes was on routes with high incidence of violence. Since it is counterintuitive to assume numerous walking trips are a consequence of violence, the opposite was considered as a possible explanation to those results. The present study reinforces the need for increased surveillance in regions with high participation of non-motorized modes, for preventing users from shifting to motorized modes.
