Full textAt the beginning of the 19th century, postrevolutionary France witnessed the invention of a new kind of market : matchmaking. Marriage agencies, which first flourished in Paris, gained new customers. The market grew even further in size as it spread into the classifieds of major newspapers. As early as the middle of the century, it became common knowledge that one could go to an agency or place an advertisement in the newspapers to find a marriage partner. Being a marriage agent or a matchmaker was henceforth a commercial activity, This new business quickly came up against a major challenge. Both intermediaries and their customers found themselves stigmatized because their activity was perceived as a dangerous extension of market activities into the family and the domestic sphere. Despite these negative representations, the dating market was increasingly well stocked andmarriages by advertisement made up a non-négligeable portion of all marriages. This study is organized around three lines of inquiry. The first shows how this contested market developed over the 19th and 20th centuries into a fixture in the social and cultural landscape of french society. It also describes how this new business worked and how people reacted to it . The second presents the evolution of matchmakers’ intermediation practices. Finally, the third analyzes customer expectations and strategies. Three corpora were chosen from across the period under study: the registers of a Parisian agency between 1842 and 1849, the advertisements of a marriage newspaper "L’Alliance des Familles" between 1876 and 1894 and those of "L'lntermédiaire Discret" for the interwar period. The analysis of these corpora opens new avenues for the history of marital choice, and more generally for histories of the couple and of marriage

Full textIn population genetics models, it is commonly assumed that reproduction is a purely stochastic process. This thesis aims at using high density genomic data in order to highlight biological non random phenomena involved in human reproduction. Firstly, we focus on mate choice, and more particularly on a candidate region, the major histocompatibility complex. We confirm previous results showing that this genomic region is involved in mate choice in some human populations. Then, we extend the approach used at the major histocompatibility complex level and apply it to every autosomic gene. Our results suggest that the biological functions potentially influencing mate choice are population specific, or, in other words, are culturally driven. Finally, we focus on transmission distorsion, another process which, along with mate choice, influences the genetic diversity of an individual's descendants. We propose a new approach designed to identify genomic regions whose transmission from one generation to the next does not follow Mendel's laws. Our results show the relationship between transmission distortion and relatedness among spouses at particular genomic loci

Full textThe persistance of social homogamy is regularly observed; the tendency to form couples in which the woman occupies a lower position than her partner – female hypergamy – is also well documented: love is far from blind to social distinctions. Yet, it was concluded somewhat too fast from this major result that these phenomena have remained stable over time. This thesis shows, based on large-scale survey data, that education, social class and social class of origin homogamy has significantly weakened over the last forty years in France. This trend goes beyond what changes in the population structure would have implied (relative homogamy): the composition of couples has become closer to a random mating situation. Hypergamy has also clearly diminished, and has even reversed regarding education; females hold higher qualifications than their partners since the year 2000. As a consequence, the higher celibacy rate of women with a high social status, in particular that of the higher educated, which stemmed from their unfavorable position on the conjugal market, has converged to that of other groups. The variations of these two dimensions of partner choice over 64 regions of Europe in the 2000s are also sizable. Educational homogamy is higher than socioeconomic homogamy; hypergamy is the most frequent situation, but it is not an absolutely general pattern. The degree of cultural liberalism and of social openness appears as the strongest determinant of these two phenomena. They are negatively correlated with female labor force participation, but their relationship with economic inequalities is ambiguous

Full textThis dissertation relates the evolution of the formation of rural family through three periods before 1954, 1955-1986, 1987-2011 in the Red River Delta in the North of Vietnam. The theoretical cadre is referring to the work of Alain Girard, Claude Henryon and Edmond Lambrechts, François Héran and Michel Bozon, to the analysis of conditions for formation of one generation and generating reports of Karl Mannheim, to the analysis of the social transformation of Pierre Bourdieu from his book Work and workers in Algeria. The fiel survey by interview and observation was realized with spouses who had their marriage between references dates. Viêt Nam has experienced in the twentieth century big events which we refer. It crossed the feudal-colonial period, the period of socialist construction and the period of the market economy with a socialist orientation. Starting from political, economic, legal, educational, and demographic contexts of the country, through empirical data on the subject and survey results, we try to identify the main characteristics of the marriage of each period and the social mechanisms which determine the choice of spouse by examining the main aspects of the entry process in union: circumstances of meeting, conditions of courting, marriage decision-making, criteria for selecting, and marriage rituals. All of this aims at understanding the continuities and changes of this evolution. We observe that the geographical distance becomes more marked between the municipalities of origin of the spouses. The contexts of courting are more and more marked by the existence of the social networks and by the system of the education and training. The youth autonomy is affirmed. We find concordances between survey results and sociodemographic data recently observed in Viêt Nam

Full textIn the era of globalization, how to analyze the castes and ethnic mixes within the couples in Nepal ? The research has been conducted within a society largely hinduised, so that the analyze of orientalists classic monographs suggested initially that the rules for finding a spouse were mostly endogamous, in accordance with the society's segmentation into castes. The observations carried out during seven fieldworks in Kathmandu conversely indicated that Nepal is in a period of transformations within many fields, and this allows individuals to be more free to choose their spouse. The research presents how the observations of mixed marriages "inter-castes", "inter-ethnics" or "inter-religious" allowed to reveal a theory that can explain the transformations of matrimonial practices in Nepal

Full textThe aim of this research is to analyze and interpret form of construction, providing and appropriation of senses and meanings of mediatic languages tools about presidential campaigns of 2007, 2012 and 2017 through the french newspapers. Firstly, we wanted to know how can linguistic, iconic and plastic tools of the first page of newspapers can be considered like technictools with the aim of the presidential choice during the period 2007 and 2012. Secondly, we wanted to find out how media language tools can contribute to be psychological and technic through the representations and appropriation of mediatic messages by students in Education Science during the presidential campaign 2017? On the one hand, we have planned to analyze, compare and interpret network relation between construction and providing of tools language used by the newspapers to present presidential campaigns during two historic periods. On the other hand, a complementary study has allowed us to analyse and interpret the representations and appropriation of mediatic messages by students in Education Science. On the theoretical aspect; we based our research on historical-cultural theory of Vygotski (1985), the concept of artefact (Rabardel, 1995), media education theories, concept of frame (Goffman, 1995), the network-actor theory (2007). On the methodological aspect, we have chosen a qualiquantitative method (with the softwares CHIC, Tropes, Iramuteq), a content (Bardin, 1993) anddiscourse (Maingueneau, 2014) analysis methods of language tools of first page of newspapers. We opted for a cross-cultural approach including statistical implicative analysis, a psychosocio-semio-linguistic, semiological and pragmatic approaches. The corpus have been made up of 239 newspapers editions, 293 pictures of the first coverture of french newspapers (20 Minutes, Métro, Lyon Plus, Le Figaro, Le Monde, et Le Progrès) and 15 interviews collected from students in Education Science. The results show that media language tools can be established as technical tools through the introduction of different mechanisms, natural and social frames of conceptualization, through a hightlighting types of discourse (stative, declarative, narrative and argumentative). Heuristics and pragmatics schemes are mainly requested in 2007 than epistemics schemes which have been reinforced in 2012. The analysis of tools made for the spread of formal and informal mediatic kwnowledges or news aboutpresidential campaigns show that the thought is built and it is developed depending on sociohistorical context with form of actualisation, novelty, and redundancy. The taking into account of social, symbolic, private, conscious, onconscious dimension is involved to the mediatic tools appropriation but also with the practices of students in the construction of their decisions. Theanalysis and the interpretation of the apropriation of mediatic messages by the students in Education Science demonstrate that the consultation and the appropriation of this fulfill more a cognitive, conative than behavioural needs
