Full textRecent studies indicate that precursors of human morality may exist in non human animals. Among these precursors, prosociality (behaviours that produce a benefit for a recipient without necessarily involving a cost for the actor) is considered a fundamental component of any moral system. We conducted prosociality tests in several species of mammals and birds, taking into account factors of individuals’ identity (tolerance, hierarchical ranks, sex) and of recipients behaviours (communication, reciprocity). Our subjects were more prosocial toward their subordinates than toward their dominants, suggesting that prosociality could be used as a way to maintain its own rank. We reported differences between sexes consistent with the parental care pattern of the species, supporting the idea that prosociality would have evolved with parental care. The reproductive period and (even more) having (or having had) young seemed to increase the subjects’ prosociality, especially towards their reproductive mate and their offspring, which could be interpreted as behaviours that ultimately spread their own genes. We found patterns of direct reciprocity, our subjects becoming more prosocial when the recipient was prosocial in the previous session. Communications from the recipient also influenced positively or negatively (depending on their nature) the subjects' choices. All of our results show that it is possible and desirable to study prosociality outside primates, our subjects having been able to take into account both the recipient's identity and its behaviour

Full textThe Republic of Belarus, which was the former Bielorussian Sovietic Socialist Republic, has a stormy "linguistic history". Especially, over the last ten years of the 20th century they have had three major linguistic political changes. This work hope to retrace them, via the school language approach, considered as a revelatory of general linguistic policy. These variations have been covered via a historical approach based on archives of the Belarussian Communist Party, via the reading an compilation of the available statistics and via and inquiry carried out on five thousand families in Minsk. Full textChoosing a first name for a child is the result of a long process. Many determinisms are involved : social, familial, affective, unconscious. That implies using simultaneously ethnology, sociology, history and psychoanalysis. Case studies based on intensive clinical interviews reveal conflicts and contradictions at different levels:-social contradictions between reproduction and historicicy, integration and differenciation, conflicts between different social groups. -conflicts between the different branches of the family and contradictions between the different parts of inheritage : economic, social, cultural, symbolic and ideological. -conscious and unconscious contradictions of each parent and in the familial myths. -conflicts inside the parental couple. The parental project, condensed in the first name of the child, appears as the final mediation of all the contradictions

Full textIndividuals have to choose the best sexual partner to maximize their fitness. Most male or female ornaments are honest signals of quality and are therefore used for mate choice. Black-legged kittiwakes Rissa tridactyla are brightly coloured and may exhibit asymmetric black wingtips. We showed that tongue coloration in females, bill and gape coloration in males and symmetry of black wingtips in the two sexes correlated with body condition and/or reproductive success. These traits may thus be used as honest signal of quality in mate choice. Kittiwakes are known to preferentially mate with genetically dissimilar individuals. As in other vertebrates, we suggested that body odour may be the cue used by birds to asses genetic characteristics. Through behavioural experiments and chemical analyses of preen secretion, we showed that kittiwakes can smell and that an individual odour signature exists in preen secretion, suggesting that preen odour may be partly genetically determined. Further studies are needed to determine whether body odour broadcasts genetic compatibility and whether it is used in mate choice. Individual quality plays a role in mate choice but also influences parental investment. In kittiwakes, low parental investment is known to cause chick aggression and siblicide. We showed that females (not males) are responsible for the low food delivery causing brood reduction but that male heterozygosity (not female heterozygosity) is correlated with brood reduction rate. We then suggested that females mated with low quality males may lower their investment and thus trigger brood reduction. We therefore experimentally handicapped males and observed parent and chick behaviour. We found that females mated with handicapped males fed their chicks at a lower rate than control females and that their chicks were more aggressive. However, further studies are needed to determine whether their feeding effort was restrained or constrained

Full textThis thesis looks at individuals who have chosen to remain childless. It is based mainly on personal accounts, but also uses quantitative data to gauge the extent of the phenomenon. The thesis pursues two main objectives. The first is to view the refusal of parenthood as a sociological object, in terms of its capacity to shed light on the normative and contradictory injunctions of French society. This second is to grasp, in an overall perspective, the reasons why individuals choose not to become parents, the rationality of their choice and their engagement in a process of deviation from the norm of family formation. On the basis of biographical interviews conducted with persons concerned by this question, the thesis reconstitutes the way in which refusal of parenthood is constructed, in close interaction with the occupational, conjugal and parental norms of society, themselves an integral part of the gender system. In a complementary manner, the thesis also explores the reasons given by individuals who do wish to have children, and the normative framework of procreation and parenthood which emerged in the 1960s

Full textFrom the phenomenon of boy demand in China ( which also exists in other cultures ) , I asked the question of the desire for children, meanwhile, I searched in Chinese thought cultural and philosophical references, both to give a psychoanalytic interpretation of the idea of the transmission of structure in China , and to reconcile Chinese thought and psychoanalysis, for understand the structure of the unconscious. I have undertaken this thesis with the hope of understanding the problems that can generate different currents of thought in China, and hope to give an explanation, neither historical nor sociological, but psychoanalytic. My problematic was first consisted of questioning the Chinese preference for the male child leaving the restricted its cultural framework and enlightened by clinical research conducted in the West. More broadly, Chinese thought has been subjected to a psychoanalytic examination to Westerners better understand certain aspects and that the Chinese have a less normative perception, especially regarding the category of "filial piety ". From a methodological point of view, I also must say that without Chinese clinical examples, I had to resort to clinical cases I have personally faced in France and others, I have borrowed Helene Deutsch. I also took advantage of an old erotic novel, Jin Ping Mei and Chinese philosophical texts, for which you do not always had a French translation

Full textThis thesis consists of four stand-alone essays in 'the field of the economics of education. The first part comprises three chapters which analyse the interactions of parents and schools. The central questions here are: Why do parents become involved in their children's school-education? Can and should schools increase the levels of involvement by parents? Who benefits, and to what extent, from parental involvement programmes? To answer these policy-relevant questions empirically, l draw on a Iiterature review and on results from two randomized control trials which l helped design and run. These experiments prove that schools are able to increase parents' awareness and that parental inputs have strong effects on pupil behavior. Result also show the existence of important positive spillover effects beyond the targeted populations. Part II explores how employers perceive the education a qualifications of their workers. According to human capital theories, the output of education is a productive asset, a bundle of knowledge and skills to which economists refer as "human capital". In contrast, screening theories of education view information about the quality of workers (about their skills, knowledge, and attitudes) as the primary product of educational services. In this part, l show that employers' information about employees' educational. Qualifications is highly noisy. This suggests that the information contained in educational certificates is often of limited interest to employers
