Abstract:
Objective: to study the features of lipid spectrum of blood serum in patients with hypothyroidysm and thyrotoxicosis depending on age, degree of compensation, duration of the illness and body mass index (BMI). Materials and methods . 70 patients with thyroid dysfunctions with various degree of compensation were included in the study. They were divided into 3 groups: the first group with primary subcompensated and decompensated hypothyroidysm; the second group with primary subcompensated and decompensated thyrotoxicosis, and the third group as a comparison group included patients in the state of medicamental compensation. The laboratory research was aimed at the definition of the indices of cholesterol (chol), triglycerides (TG), high density lipoproteins (HDLP), low density lipoproteins (LDLP), very low density lipoproteins (VLDLP) and quotient aterogenesity (QA) on the biochemical machine «Architect с8000» (ABBOOT, USA). Results. The analysis of the lipid spectrum depending on age in patients under 40 and over 50 revealed higher indices of chol and TG in the first group, than in the third one. The patients of the second group under 49 and over 60 had the same indices lower than in the patients of the third group. The patients of the first group who were in the state of decompensation observed the maximum indices of chol, TG, LDLP, VLDLP and QA. The patients of the second group in the state of decompensation had minimum deflection of the same indices of lipid spectrum. The patients of the first group observed increased indices of chol and TG in augmentation of the illness experience and the patients of the second group had the same indices decreased. The comparison of the data revealed minimum chol indices in the patients of the second group, and maximum TG indices in the first group in normal, boundary and increased BMI. Conclusion. The state of lipid spectrum in the patients with thyroid dysfunctions depended on the age of the patients, the experience of the illness, and BMI and compensation degree of thyroid functions which was confirmed by authentic correlation communications between the indices of free thyroxin and chol, TG and LDLP, and also between the thyroid stimulated hormone level and chol, TG, QA, LDLP and VLDLP indices.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Objective: To investigate the effects of falciparum malaria on lipid profile and atherogenic indices of type 2 diabetics and non-diabetic adults in the Central Region of Ghana. Methods: Plasma lipid profile comprising total cholesterol (CHOL), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides (TG) were determined in 100 type 2 diabetics and 100 non-diabetic controls before and during falciparum malaria using the BT3000 autoanalyzer in a prospective case control study design. Atherogenic indices were computed. Results: At baseline, diabetics recorded significantly (P < 0.05) lower level of LDL but higher levels of CHOL/LDL and TG/HDL ratios than controls. LDL correlated (P < 0.05) positively but negatively with CHOL and HDL respectively in the two study groups. During malaria, diabetics exhibited higher (P < 0.05) levels of CHOL and TG but lower level of HDL. Non-diabetic controls had malaria-induced elevated level in TG only. The positive correlation between LDL and CHOL was maintained in the two study groups. The TG levels of diabetics correlated (P < 0.05) positively with LDL and HDL during malaria. In the case of controls, a positive (P < 0.05) correlation was found between LDL and HDL during falciparum malaria. Conclusion: Falciparum malaria modified the associations among the various DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/ajms.v6i1.10798 Asian Journal of Medical Sciences Vol.6(1) 2015 71-76

Abstract:
The aim was to study the effect of normobaric hypoxia on biochemical parameters to assess homeostatic changes caused by mental work.Materials and methods: 90 highly qualified athletes of various specializations took part in the scientific observation. Athletes performed psychophysiological tests to determine mental performance under normal conditions and under the influence of normobaric hypoxia. Results: the concentrations of lactate (La), glucose (Glu), cholesterol (Chol), and triglycerides (Trigl) in the blood were measured four times at different stages. Conclusions: it was shown that athletes after staying in NH conditions significantly increased the La, Glu, Chol and Trigl indices, which indicates the mobilization of energy resources and an increase in anaerobic processes in response to NH exposure. Re-performance of mental work after exposure to NH was associated with a marked decrease in the concentration of Glu, Chol, and Trigl, along with a slight increase in the concentration of La after normobaric hypoxic exposure, there are significant changes in the bioenergetic profile in athletes.

Abstract:
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients are at high risk of cardiovascular (CV) events, and the chronic inflammatory state may generate quantitative and qualitative changes in lipoprotein fractions. The anti-IL-6 receptor tocilizumab (TCZ), even if effective in inflammation and joint damage prevention, determined significant alterations to RA patients’ lipid levels in randomized controlled trials, but real-world data are lacking. We evaluated the changes in lipid fraction levels and disease activity in a longitudinal cohort of RA patients on long-term treatment with tocilizumab (TCZ) in a community setting. We retrospectively selected 40 naïve-biologic RA patients on treatment with intravenous TCZ compared to 20 RA patients on methotrexate treatment as the control group. Total cholesterol (Tot-Chol), low-density lipoproteins (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and triglyceride (TG) levels were measured at the baseline and at 12, 24, and 52 weeks thereafter. At the same points, 28-joint disease activity score (DAS28), clinical disease activity index (CDAI), and EULAR clinical responses were also assessed. During the first 24 weeks, we observed in TCZ-treated patients a progressive statistically significant (p<0.001) increase in Tot-Chol, LDL, HDL, and TG, which returned close to the baseline at 52 weeks. But no changes in the lipid-related CV risk indices Tot-Chol/HDL and LDL/HDL ratios and the atherogenic index (log10 TG/HDL) were detectable. Notably, we observed a statistically significant negative correlation between changes in lipid fractions and DAS28 or CDAI. The prolonged treatment with TCZ was associated to a transient increase in cholesterol’s fractions during the first 6 months of treatment, with inverse correlation to disease activity, but with no impact on surrogate lipid indices of atherogenic risk. These findings may aid clinicians in interpreting the RA patient’s lipid profile in daily clinical practice.

Abstract:
To maximize training quality, athletes have sought nutritional supplements that optimize recovery. This study compared chocolate milk (CHOC) with a carbohydrate replacement beverage (CRB) as a recovery aid after intense exercise, regarding performance and muscle damage markers in trained cyclists. Ten regional-level cyclists and triathletes (maximal oxygen uptake 55.2 ± 7.2 mL·kg–1·min–1) completed a high-intensity intermittent exercise protocol, then 15–18 h later performed a performance trial at 85% of maximal oxygen uptake to exhaustion. Participants consumed 1.0 g carbohydrate·kg–1·h–1 of a randomly assigned isocaloric beverage (CHOC or CRB) after the first high-intensity intermittent exercise session. The same protocol was repeated 1 week later with the other beverage. A 1-way repeated measures analysis of variance revealed no significant difference (p = 0.91) between trials for time to exhaustion at 85% of maximal oxygen uptake (CHOC 13 ± 10.2 min, CRB 13.5 ± 8.9 min). The change in creatine kinase (CK) was significantly (p < 0.05) greater in the CRB trial than in the CHOC trial (increase CHOC 27.9 ± 134.8 U·L–1, CRB 211.9 ± 192.5 U·L–1), with differences not significant for CK levels before the second exercise session (CHOC 394.8 ± 166.1 U·L–1, CRB 489.1 ± 264.4 U·L–1) between the 2 trials. These findings indicate no difference between CHOC and this commercial beverage as potential recovery aids for cyclists between intense workouts.

Abstract:
Dyslipidemia is commonly associated with diabetes (T2DM). This has been demonstrated for the Caucasian population, but few data are available for Asian Indians. The paper aims to investigate serum lipids (separately or in combination) and their association with glucose intolerance status (T2DM and prediabetes) in a rural Bangladeshi population. A sample of 2293 adults (≥20 years) were included in a community based cross-sectional survey in 2009. Anthropometric measures, blood pressure, blood glucose (fasting and 2-h oral glucose tolerance test) and fasting serum lipids (total cholesterol, T-Chol; triglycerides, Tg; low density lipoprotein cholesterol, LDL-C and high density lipoprotein cholesterol, HDL-C) were registered. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and regression analysis were performed. High Tg levels were seen in 26% to 64% of the participants, depending on glucose tolerance status. Low HDL-C levels were seen in all groups (>90%). Significant linear trends were observed for high T-Chol, high Tg and low HDL-C with increasing glucose intolerance (p for trend <0.001). T2DM was significantly associated with high T-Chol (Odds ratio (OR): 2.43, p < 0.001), high Tg (OR: 3.91, p < 0.001) and low HDL-C (OR: 2.17, p = 0.044). Prediabetes showed a significant association with high Tg (OR: 1.96, p < 0.001) and low HDL-C (OR: 2.93, p = 0.011). Participants with combined high Tg and low HDL-C levels had a 12.75-fold higher OR for T2DM and 4.89 OR for prediabetes. In Asian Indian populations an assessment of serum lipids is warranted not only for T2DM patients, but also for those with prediabetes.

Abstract:
Ethno-contemporary dance, street theatre and drag-cholo show in the Ecuadorian Andes. Through the study of three methods of theater and dance creation, this dissertation aims to understand the concept of “cholo” (cultural concept that refers to the person who lacks identity: neither indigenous, nor white, nor mestizo) from a historical and aesthetic perspective during the last 20 years in the Andean environment of Quito, Ecuador. On a first assessment of the history of the pre- and post-colonial Andean scene, it was noted that official speeches used external and colonial discursive resources. These types of speeches reveal the re-interpretation of theatrical scenes and they exclude the dialogs and negotiations established in the socio-cultural, popular, and aesthetic of the Andean arts.In addition, three forms of life and popular art that were developed in Quito were analyzed: ethno-contemporary dance, street theater, and the drag-cholo performance. Through these studies, it was learned that “cholojizacion” is a subject of debate where empowerment of the popular Andean scenic arts and their mobility play a role within the hegemonic cultural dimensions of the post-colonial world

Abstract:
China and India claimed two territories along their borders on the Himalayas: Aksai Chin in the west and the North-East Frontier Agency in the east. The border dispute escalated and, on October 20, 1962, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) opened fire on the two fronts and advanced into the disputed territories. One month later, on November 21, China declared a unilateral ceasefire and withdrew behind its disputed line of control. In response, the Indian government arrested over 2,000 Chinese living in India and interned them in Deoli, Rajasthan. When the Chinese were released between 1964 and 1966, they found their properties sold off by the Indian government. Many left India and immigrated to Canada. I interviewed four Indian-born Chinese who were interned and who now live in the Greater Toronto Area. I recorded their accounts of life in Deoli Detention Camp in Rajasthan.

Abstract:
Abstract Earlier historians whose framework of study was imperial history had little difficulty in seeing distinct phases in Indian history and marking clear dividing points in it. Their Eurocentric vision led them to chop up India’s experience into segments suggested by British politics, institutions, and decisions: for example, the gaining of empire, 1757-1818, or the subsequent ‘Age of Reform’ inaugurated by Lord Bentinck’s Governor-Generalship. But such clear periodization disappears when the observer shifts his focus to actual practice in India rather than proclaimed policy, whether the issue is the creation of a clear administrative system, the settlement of land rights and revenue obligations, or aspects of social reform. Nor does older periodization help if the historian’s main interest lies in the historical experience of India’s people in their own right, in Indian society’s own dynamics and resources, and in interaction between that society and western influences, rather than in attempting to discern any simple impact of imperial rulers and their policies.

Abstract:
The name Śrīvijaya, found in inscriptions in Sumatra and references in Chinese, Indian, and Arabic sources, was first recognized as that of a kingdom in 1918. From a capital in south Sumatra, Śrīvijaya exercised influence over a string of ports from south Thailand to west Borneo and possibly Java from the late seventh to eleventh century. In 1025 the capital Palembang was overthrown by an invasion from the Chola kingdom of southern India, but Palembang remained an influential port-polity until it was incorporated into the Netherlands East Indies in the nineteenth century. This empire flourished due to its position on the maritime trade route between East, Southeast, South, and West Asia as well as East Africa. As an empire based on control of trade routes rather than land, it occupies an unusual position in the study of empires.

Abstract:
Green plants are capable of producing their own sustenance. They accomplish this through a process known as photosynthesis, which makes use of a chlorophyll-based green pigment. A pigment is a chemical that has a specific color and, depending on that color, may absorb light at various wavelengths. The chlorophyll of the leaf may be predicted from leaf color, which has the potential to be an excellent indicator of plant health. Chlorophyll a (Chl-a) and Chlorophyll b are the two main types of chlorophyll found in the photosystems of green plants (Chl-b). Each kind has a unique function as well as advantages and a unique chemical composition. So, it is crucial to anticipate the chlorophyll of the takes off as it provides valuable information regarding plant health and edit management. In the proposed work, a non-destructive image processing technique is employed to estimate the chlorophyll content of tomato plants using images of the leaves. The chlorophyll content of the acquired image is predicted using a deep learning (DL) algorithm. Using the camera of an Android smartphone, samples of tomato plant leaves were collected from the field, and the color vegetation indices for all three RGB channels were then abstracted. The Chlorophyll detector, which is aimed at both small- and large-scale farms, has finally been built. For easy deployment, the mobile app combines an image from a smartphone camera with cloud-hosted software.

Abstract:
Although Tibetan Buddhism is often associated with monks and canonical texts, other types of Buddhist practitioners and other kinds of texts are also of importance. Before the 5th Dalai Lama came to power in 1642 and Tibetan Buddhism became increasingly systematized and monastically oriented, Tibetan charismatic yogins composed and printed religious poetry (mgur) and hagiographies (rnam thar) to promote a non-monastic ideal with remarkable success. They modelled their lifestyle upon Indian Tantric siddhas and on the Tibetan poet-saint Milarepa (c. 1040–1123). Like them, they adopted a wandering lifestyle and used religious poetry as a means for spreading their message. By expressing themselves through poetry, which they also composed, these yogins could present Buddhism in an innovative way, adapted to the needs of their audience. Taking the ‘songs with parting instructions’ (’gro chos kyi mgur) of the ‘crazy yogin’ (rnal ’byor smyon pa) Tsangnyön Heruka (1452–1507) as the point of departure, this chapter explores how these colourful figures attempted to vitalize Buddhism in Tibet by creating an alternative religious infrastructure outside of the monastery.

Abstract:
Cheol-Hong Cheon of Korea University (J. Org. Chem. 2014, 79, 7277) and Toshiyuki Kamei and Toyoshi Shimada of the Nara National College of Technology (Tetrahedron Lett. 2014, 55, 4245) described the ring bromination of arene boronates. The boronate can then be removed, enabling the conversion of 1 to 2. Yu Rao of Tsinghua University constructed (Chem. Commun. 2014, 50, 15037) the sulfone 5 by coupling the arenes 3 and 4 with K2S2O8. Igor Larrosa of Queen Mary University of London assembled (Chem. Sci. 2014, 5, 3509) the biphenyl 8 by arylating 6 with the iodide 7. Guy Bertrand of the University of California, San Diego showed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2014, 136, 13594) that under Au catalysis, the aniline 9 was sufficiently nucleophilic to add in a conjugate sense to the enone 10 to give 11. Hideo Togo of Chiba University optimized (Eur. J. Org. Chem. 2014, 6077) conditions for the selective ortho formylation of a phenol 12. The crude reaction mixture could also be directly oxidized with I2/ NH3 to give the nitrile 13. Silas P. Cook of Indiana University ortho metalated (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2014, 136, 13130; Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 11065) the benzamide 14, then used an iron catalyst to couple that intermediate with a halide 15, leading to the alkylated product 16. As with the phenol 12 and the benzamide 14, aromatic functionalization has usually been directed by a functional group directly attached to the ring. Daqin Shi and Yingsheng Zhao of Soochow University showed (Chem. Sci. 2014, 5, 4962) that a longer tether can be effective, as illustrated by the conversion of 17 to 19. Debabrata Maiti of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay also used (Org. Lett. 2014, 16, 5760) a longer tether for the selective meta functionalization of 20 to 22. Motohiro Sonoda of Osaka Prefecture University constructed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2014, 55, 5302) the phenol 25 by acid-mediated rearrangement of the Diels–Alder adduct of 24 with the furan 23. Anthony G. M. Barrett of Imperial College London devised (J. Org. Chem. 2014, 79, 8706) conditions for the iodinative cyclization of 26 to 27.

"Decreases in Short Term Memory, IQ, and Altered Brain Metabolic Ratios in Urban Apolipoprotein ε4 Children Exposed to Air Pollution." In Advances in Alzheimer’s Disease. Abstract:
Children’s urban air pollution exposures result in systemic and brain inflammation and the early hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 allele is the most prevalent genetic risk for AD. We assessed whether APOE in healthy children modulates cognition, olfaction, and metabolic brain indices. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-R) and the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test were administered to 50 Mexico City Metropolitan Area children (13.4 ± 4.8 years, 28 APOE ε3 and 22 APOE ε4). N-acetylaspartate (NAA)/creatine (Cr), choline (Cho)/Cr, myo-inositol (mI)/Cr, and NAA/mI were calculated using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in the white matter of the frontal and parietal lobes, hippocampus, and pons. APOE ε4 versus ε3 children had a reduced NAA/Cr ratio in the right frontal white matter and decrements on attention, short-term memory, and below-average scores in Verbal and Full Scale IQ (>10 points). APOE modulated the group effects between WISC-R and left frontal and parietal white matter, and hippocampus metabolites. Soap was the predominantly failed odor in urban children and, in APOE ε4 versus ε3 carriers, strongly correlated with left hippocampus mI/Cr ratio. APOE modulates responses to air pollution in the developing brain. APOE ε4 carriers could have a higher risk of developing early AD if they reside in a polluted environment. APOE, cognition, and olfaction testing and targeted magnetic resonance spectroscopy may contribute to the assessment of urban children and their results could provide new paths toward the unprecedented opportunity for early neuroprotection and AD prevention.

Abstract:
The present paper is aimed at the analysis of adaptation mechanisms of five species of the genus Acer L. in the culture of the botanical garden. With this view we studied the indices of the pigment complex (nitrogen balance - Nbi, flavonols - Flv and chlorophyll - Ch) in the assimilating organs of plants. It was revealed that the pigment composition of plant leaves indicates their relatively high physiological status. An increase in biochemical parameters (Nbi,Chl, Flv) was identified by the end of summer in comparison with the beginning of summer period, which testifies to the formation of the protective function of the plant in the pre-winter period. The following statistical methods were used for test results interpretation: Shapiro – Wilk tests, Mann – Whitney, Wilcoxon, Kruskal-Wallisand criteria.

Abstract:
Transforming the academic experience and success of students by building Active Learning Classrooms (ALCs) is increasing, but ALCs are still fewer than traditional classroom spaces. These new learning spaces create an inherent tension between increasing student enrollments and active learning environments. Accommodating increased class sizes does not have to exclude fostering an active learning space. We have an opportunity every time a classroom is renovated or a new building is built to intentionally acknowledge and engage this tension to positively influence student learning and success. As we renovate and construct new learning spaces on our campuses, it is not only important to understand how the “built pedagogy” (Monahan 2000, 2002) and “architecture as pedagogy” (Orr 1993, 1997) of our spaces can help or hinder more active learning pedagogies, but also how to support effective teaching in these spaces (Levesque-Bristol, 2019). While many institutions are prioritizing active learning as old classrooms get renovated, few are doing so at the broad campus-wide scope necessary to affect larger-scale culture change (Park & Choi, 2014). Two such institutions that are developing and supporting large-scale active learning spaces are the Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) and Purdue University (Indiana, USA). TU Dublin and Purdue are conducting collaborative research focusing on how each institution’s new, large-scale construction of formal and informal learning spaces is impacting teaching and learning.

Abstract:
The frequent financial critical states that occur in our world, during many centuries have attracted scientists from different areas. The impact of similar fluctuations continues to have a huge impact on the world economy, causing instability in it concerning normal and natural disturbances [1]. The an- ticipation, prediction, and identification of such phenomena remain a huge chal- lenge. To be able to prevent such critical events, we focus our research on the chaotic properties of the stock market indices. During the discussion of the re- cent papers that have been devoted to the chaotic behavior and complexity in the financial system, we find that the Largest Lyapunov exponent and the spec- trum of Lyapunov exponents can be evaluated to determine whether the system is completely deterministic, or chaotic. Accordingly, we give a theoretical background on the method for Lyapunov exponents estimation, specifically, we followed the methods proposed by J. P. Eckmann and Sano-Sawada to compute the spectrum of Lyapunov exponents. With Rosenstein’s algorithm, we com- pute only the Largest (Maximal) Lyapunov exponents from an experimental time series, and we consider one of the measures from recurrence quantification analysis that in a similar way as the Largest Lyapunov exponent detects highly non-monotonic behavior. Along with the theoretical material, we present the empirical results which evidence that chaos theory and theory of complexity have a powerful toolkit for construction of indicators-precursors of crisis events in financial markets.
