Abstract:
Surveys of Scelio spp., parasites of acridid eggs, were conducted in southern Australia during 1990-94. Parasitism of economically important grasshopper and locust species was frequently substantial confirming an important, albeit often localised, role by Scelio spp. in regulating host populations. Parasitism of Phaulacridium vittatum eggpods in tableland districts averaged 33.5% +/- s.d. 9.5 (range 27.4-47.1) and Chortoicetes terminifera throughout southern Australia averaged 19.8% +/- s.d. 24.6 (range 0-78.9). Scelio spp. were stenophagous and although some species parasitised several hosts,

Abstract:
Swarming and the expression of phase polyphenism are defining characteristics of locust species. Increases in local population density mediate morphological, physiological and behavioural changes within individuals, which correlate with mass marching of juveniles in migratory bands and flying swarms of adults. The Australian plague locust ( Chortoicetes terminifera ) regularly forms migratory bands and swarms, but is claimed not to express phase polyphenism and has accordingly been used to argue against a central role for phase change in locust swarming. We demonstrate that juvenile C. termini

Abstract:
Damage and loss in yield of wheat crops caused by the Australian plague locust, Chortoicetes terminlfera (Walker), during the major locust plague in the spring of 1984 were assessed. Although severe plant defoliation was observed, yield was affected more by the timing of the attack than by the severity of leaf damage. Major losses in yield occurred both through leaf damage near anthesis and by severing of the whole ear during the milky ripe stage, though losses were insignificant if defoliation alone occurred more than 12 days after anthesis. The implications for control are discussed.

Abstract:
Temporal water and nitrogen relations of curly Mitchell grass, Astrebla lappacea (Lindl.) Domin, in response to single waterings of 0, 20, 60 and 180 mm were studied. Effects on the survival and development of the common armyworm, Mythimna convecta (Walker), and the Australian plague locust, Chortoicetes terminifera (Walker), were recorded. Glasshouse trials were conducted to ascertain the level of rainfall required for insect survival. More than 20 mm of rainfall was needed for insect survival. Even at 60 mm, development was retarded in some instances. Plant nitrogen was positively correlated

Abstract:
This thesis traces the changing course of locust and grasshopper outbreaks in southern Australia and relates them to environmental changes. It also examines the creation and use of scientific knowledge about locusts over more than a century of research. Together, these historical investigations show how the insects’ responses to environmental change influenced the course of ecological and agricultural science. Digitised newspaper records of locust occurrence allow a more complete reconstruction of historic plagues and a new interpretation of the species involved and the environmental correlate
