Abstract:
In Romania 102 species of Depressariidae, Peleopodidae, Ethmiidae and Fuchsiini were recorded in the last checklist and its supplement (Rákosy et al. 2003; Rákosy and Goia 2007). The present study deals with a total of 117 species ever recorded from Romania including voucher material studied in this overview: 101 Depressariidae, 2 Peleopodidae, 13 Ethmiidae and 1 Fuchsiini. As a result of the analysis of the studied material the Romanian fauna is currently considered to consist of 114 species, 90 of them are confirmed and 24 requiring confirmation. 13 species are recorded for the first time from Romania: Agonopterix bipunctosa (Curtis, 1850), A. coenosella (Zerny, 1940), A. ferocella (Chrétien, 1910), A. irrorata (Staudinger, 1870), A. lessini Buchner, 2017, A. ligusticella (Chrétien, 1908), A. multiplicella (Erschoff, 1877), A. quadripunctata (Wocke, 1857), Depressaria badiella (Hübner, 1796), D. daucella ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775), D. sordidatella Tengström, 1848, Exaeretia ledereri (Zeller, 1854) and Anchinia laureolella Herrich-Schäffer, 1854. 2 species are found with unclear taxonomic status: Agonopterix banatica Georgesco, 1965 and Agonopterix dumitrescui Georgesco, 1965. 3 species are formally excluded from the Romanian fauna: Agonopterix agyrella (Rebel, 1917), A. comitella (Lederer, 1855) and Depressaria halophilella (Chrétien, 1908). Additionally, 28 species are first records for different regions of the country and further 15 corrections are made to their distribution within Romania. The examined voucher material is concisely presented by each species, collecting data are presented in detail only in the case of the first records, and a few rarely recorded species, by which the adults, male and occasionally female genitalia are figured.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The article deals with the professional career of the Russian psychologist Helena Antipoff (1892-1974) in the Soviet Russia, between 1917 and 1924, after returning from her educational stay in Paris and Geneva, and before migrating to Brazil in 1929. During the brief Soviet period, Helena was a witness and an active participant in the grandiose and dramatic changes of the country. Her work, as well as the work of other Russian scientists who migrated to other countries during the years of war and social revolution, is now being extensively studied, and new knowledge reverse some established perceptions and stereotypes about the history of psychology in Russia. Antipoff start-up in the Russian psychological and educational communities was linked to the intensive scientific and social activities of the St. Petersburg school of scientists and psychologists at this period – Vladimir M. Bekhterev (1857-1927), Alexander F. Lazursky (1874-1917), Alexander P. Nechaev (1870-1948), Mikhail Y. Basov (1892-1931), Adrian S. Griboedov (1875-1948) and others. Helena`s professional self-realization in this six-year Russian period was developed in real hot spots of practical psychological problems of that time for the country (study of children in conditions of devastation, hunger and orphanhood; testing of enhancement/reduction of child intelligence in conditions of social cataclysm and war; comparison of intellectual abilities of children of different social groups and in different countries; social and psychological diagnostics and distribution of “street children” to different types of care and educational institutions).

Abstract:
American carcinologist Sidney Irving Smith (1843–1926) established names of one family, seven genera and 50 species ofbrachyuran crustaceans in 11 publications between 1869 and 1885. The precise dates of these publications as determined fromvarious sources are given, with particular emphasis on the relative precedence of four that appeared in 1869. A complete list ofthe brachyuran names proposed by Smith, and their current identities, is also given. Xantho stimpsonii Smith, 1869, a previ-ously overlooked replacement name for Xantho denticulatus Stimpson, 1860 (non White, 1848), is an objective synonym ofWilliamstimpsonia stimpsoni (A. Milne-Edwards, 1873), and the precedence of the two names is reversed to maintain prevail-ing usage of the latter. The same action is also taken for Xantho multidentatus Lockington, 1877, a subjective synonym of Wil-liamstimpsonia stimpsoni (A. Milne-Edwards, 1879). The authorship of the following names previously attributed to attributedto Smith in a publication by Verrill (1869) should be attributed only to the latter author: Hepatella amica (Aethridae), Hypocon-cha panamensis (Dromiidae) and Pinnotheres margarita (Pinnotheridae). Authorship of the name Cardiosoma, an unjustifiedemendation of Cardisoma (Gecarcinidae), is conventionally attributed to Smith (1869) but it was actually first used by Agassiz (1846). Cardisoma is attributed to Latreille, in Latreille, Le Peletier, Serville & Guérin, 1828.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
In July 1875, the Hon. Alexander Morris, lieutenant-governor of Manitoba and the north-west, received a letter from Lawrence Clarke, the Hudson’s Bay Company factor at Fort Carlton, informing him that a serious state of affairs had arisen on the south branch of the Saskatchewan and strongly pressing for a detachment of the mounted police. This letter mentioned the establishment of a permanent half-breed settlement at St. Laurent and stated that the half-breeds had “assumed to themselves the right to enact laws, rules and regulations for the Government of the Colony and adjoining country of a most tyrannical nature, which the minority of the settlers are perforce bound to obey or be treated with criminal severity.” The “president” of this government was Gabriel Dumont, who was alleged to have coerced various “freemen” and Indians on the plains by seizing the property of, and levying fines upon, those who refused to acknowledge his authority. The letter continued with a statement that the Indians, too, were assuming a hostile attitude and urged that “unless we have a certain protective force stationed at or near Carlton, the ensuing Winter, I cannot answer for the result, serious difficulties will assuredly arise and life and property be endangered.”

Abstract:
Just two years ago Joseph Riel, a younger brother of Louis Riel, the famous Metis chieftain of 1869–70 and 1885, died at the old homestead of the Riel family, at St. Vital, near Winnipeg. Until his last breath Joseph Riel resided in the little white house on the east side of the Red River in which his brother had lived. It has been my privilege, on repeated occasions, to be a guest at this house, either on a friendly call or when attending one of the meetings of the Union Nationale Métisse which has been so kind as to elect me one of its honorary members. During such visits I have been allowed access by the late Joseph Riel to the papers of his brother, which he treasured as so many relics of one whom he considered a martyr. They are mostly in the handwriting of Louis Riel himself, and, naturally, throw light on certain events somewhat different from what one has been accustomed to make out from the more or less authentic and certainly biased reports of his life, which have been printed from time to time in the newspapers or in books.

Abstract:
The capture of Fort Garry, now Winnipeg, by the Red River expedition under Colonel Garnet Wolseley, on August 24, 1870, is an event in Canadian history about which some misapprehensions have been current. It has frequently been said, for example, that the arrival of Colonel Wolseley’s forces took Louis Riel and his associates completely by surprise. That such was not the case is made clear by the following narrative written by Louis Riel himself. For this narrative the present editor is indebted to the late Joseph Riel, who died on the old homestead at St. Vital on May 27, 1921. The manuscript is not apparently complete, for it breaks off abruptly, but it has never been published, and it gives a clear idea of what went on at Fort Garry while Wolseley’s forces were approaching.

Abstract:
One of the difficulties experienced by the student of the Metis and Indian problem in western Canada is the lack of materials relating to and expressing the native point of view. The document here presented should, therefore, be of some value to those interested in the events which accompanied the transfer of the north-west to the Dominion of Canada in 1869–70. Of the three contemporary accounts of the Manitoba insurrection, attributed to Louis Riel, the Memorial and Petition of the People of Rupert’s Land and the North-west Territory, British America, to his excellency, U.S. Grant, President of the United States, is the earliest in matter of date. It is scarcely a dispassionate statement of the Metis case. The language used is strong and the central theme of the document is the “perfidious treachery” of the Canadian government. The fact of strong feeling and bias does not, however, destroy the historical value of the Memorial and Petition, for it does give the reader some idea of the grounds upon which Riel and his associates sought to justify their opposition to the dominion.

Abstract:
On August 24, 1870, the British regulars of the Red River Expedition, under the command of Colonel Wolseley, captured Fort Garry. Shortly before the capture, in fact less than half an hour before the provisional government of Assiniboia “evacuated,” Riel, O’Donoghue, and Lépine, the principals, fled to the United States – Riel retiring to St. Joseph, a scraggy half-breed settlement on the Pembina River, O’Donoghue and Lépine making Pembina their rendezvous. Here they awaited the issue of events, especially the publication of a proclamation of general amnesty for all the illegal acts and irregularities committed in the name of the provisional government, which Bishop Taché and the Reverend Father Ritchot had promised would be forthcoming. They waited in vain. Bishop Taché had given the assurance in the name of the Canadian government, but he had done so unauthorized. The Reverend Father Ritchot’s guarantees were “manifestly unwarranted,” and can only be explained by an “incomprehensible misapprehension or an extraordinarily treacherous mind.”

Abstract:
Oil, coal, and gas account for approximately 80% of global primary energy, but only a portion of total airborne CO2eq (approx. 35% at GWP20 to 65% at GWP100), even though they account for 95% of total measured CO2 emissions. The benefits of these energy sources, as well as their related costs, are not all incorporated in current energy policy discussions. Global greenhouse gas policies must include documented changes in measured airborne CO2eq to avoid spending large amounts of public funds on ineffective or sub-optimal policies. The authors examined airborne CO2, which is less than half of emitted CO2, as well as reported CH4 emissions and the global warming potential of CH4 as published by the IPCC for coal and natural gas. The surprising conclusion is that surfaced-mined coal appears 'better for the climate' than the average natural gas, and all coal appears beneficial over LNG. Therefore, current CO2-only reduction policies and CO2 taxes are leading to unintended consequences and the switch from coal to natural gas, especially LNG, will not have the desired impact of reducing predicted future global warming; in fact, quite the contrary. A large portion of anthropogenic global warming is attributed by the IPCC and IEA to CH4, but it must be noted that CH4 emissions from natural sources and from agriculture account for approximately 40% and 25% of annual global CH4 emissions respectively. Energy accounts for about 20% of documented CH4 emissions. CO2 contributes only approximately 35% of annual airborne anthropogenic GHG emissions after accounting for CH4, over a 20-year horizon. At a 100-year horizon, the contribution of CO2 increases to approximately 60%. Energy policies that do not consider all GHG emissions along the entire value chain will lead to undesired economic and environmental distortions. All carbon taxation and CO2 pricing schemes are incorrect and need to be revised. At IPCC's GWP20 an approximately 2%1 higher loss of CH4 across the value chain prior to combustion of natural gas versus coal will lead to 'climate parity' of coal with natural gas. According to public data, natural gas value chains have high CH4 and undocumented CO2 losses. On a global average, using only IEA-documented CH4 data, natural gas emits approximately 15% more CO2eq than surface-mined coal, over a 20-year horizon. This difference will increase as the use of shale gas and LNG expands. Investors should support all energy systems in a manner that avoids an energy crisis, including intermittent renewable energy systems where they make sense. If CO2 emissions need to be reduced, one of the most effective ways would be to install ultra-supercritical power plants with CCUS technology. However, the undisputed benefits of increased CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere because of its promotion of photosynthesis and plant growth effects (fertilization) need to be considered in energy policy decisions as well. The authors suggest that future research and development should concentrate on reducing net emissions from fossil fuel power plants and providing cost-effective and reliable new conventional power generation capacity, utilizing clean coal and clean natural gas technology.
