Mudrov, Sergei. "The role of Christian churches in European integration." Thesis, University of Salford, 2011. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/26829/.

Full text
Abstract:
This PhD thesis analyses the role of Christian Churches in European integration. We learn that Churches are inalienable participants in the process of European integration; therefore it is important to identify how they are placed within the European project and what their contribution is. We show that social constructivism is the most adequate approach to the study of the role of Churches in European integration. This thesis contains six main chapters. Chapter One is dedicated to the analysis of the existing theories of European integration. It identifies an important gap in the existing theories, which largely overlook the religious factor in the integration process. Chapter Two analyses why and how identity, non-state actors and religion are particularly relevant to European integration. Chapter Three deals with research methodology. It argues in favour of the case study method and justifies the selection of two case studies: Churches in the reform of the EU treaties and Churches in the EU immigration and asylum policy. Chapter Four looks in detail at why Churches should be regarded as unique participants in European integration. It also identifies the confessional specificities of the Churches' involvement in the EU politics and the possible level of their influence. Chapters Five and Six are dedicated to the case studies themselves. In chapter Five attention is drawn to the role of Christian Churches in the process of recent reform of the EU treaties (2001-2009). Specifically, it analyses the contribution of Churches to the three main stages of this reform: the work of the Constitutional Convention, the Inter- Governmental Conference and the Treaty of Lisbon. In chapter Six the focus is on the policy level, with an analysis of how Churches contribute to the EU immigration and asylum policy. It also discusses their contribution in a specific case, analysing the adoption process of the Returns Directive. The main original contribution of this thesis is that it establishes a comprehensive view of Christian Churches as special and unique participants in European integration, as compared with other non-state actors, considered in the analysis of integration by social constructivism.

Paul, Vilmer. "Measuring Christian-voodoo syncretism in some Haitian Christian churches in the north of Haiti." Thesis, Nyack College, Alliance Theological Seminary, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10161698.

Full text
Abstract:

This study created a method for measuring the presence of Christian-voodoo syncretism in three Protestant denominations in the north of Haiti. Estimates of voodoo practice among Christians have ranged from 50% to 75%, a;though it is unclear how these percentages were derived. The researcher created a Voodoo-Protestant Scale (VPS), which tests for the presence of fourteen Christian-voodoo syncretistic practices and fifteen Christian-voodoo syncretistic beliefs. The VPS was written and administered in Creole, but the study contains an English translation. A scoring system for the VPS is also explained in Chapter Three, in which four points are counted for "strongly agree" and two points are counted for "agree" responses to syncretistic practice questions (PQs), and two points are counted for "strongly agree" responses and one point is counted for "agree" responses to syncretistic belief questions (BQs). Zero points were counted for "neutral," "disagree" or "strongly disagree." The VPS therefore had scores that ranged from zero to 88. The VPS allowed the researcher to make determinations about the extent of syncretism within the population (the percentage of the participants) as well as the depth of syncretism for each participant (the VPS score itself). The VPS was administered to 218 individuals who attended churches in the Church of God, Baptist, and Evangelical denominations in four urban areas (Milot, Plaine du Nord, Cap-Haitian Petite-Anse and Vaudreuil) and in three rural areas (Grand Bassin, La Jeune, and Maliarette). First, with respect to extent, the researcher discovered that 212 of 218 participants evidenced some syncretism of some kind (97%)—only 6 of 218 showed no trace of Christian-voodoo syncretism. Second, with respect to depth, the researcher discovered that 84 of 218 (39%) evidenced low syncretism (VPS scores from 1-14), 94 of 218 (43%) evidenced intermediate-level syncretism (VPS scores from 15–30), 25 of 218 (11%) evidenced high syncretism (VPS scores from 31–48), and 9 of 218 (4%) evidenced super-high levels (VPS scores from 50–88). Thus, these results offer a more nuanced picture of Christian-voodoo syncretism in Haiti. The study concludes with recommendations for church leaders.

Sharp, Brian Emory. "Selected Resources for Ministers of Music in Evangelical Christian Churches." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2007. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/2261.

Full text
Abstract:
Ministers of music in Evangelical Christian churches today are usually trained as choral conductors but take positions that require them to unexpectedly be an instrumental conductor, administrator, counselor, recruiter, evangelist, and even associate pastor. There was no central resource for information to assist these musicians, thus this annotated bibliography was developed. It includes books and magazine articles on vocal and instrumental pedagogy, conducting, hymnology, theology, musical terminology, leadership skills, evangelism, and administration. Because of time limitations, only sources available at Sherrod Library, East Tennessee State University, and on the Internet were cited. Time restraints also limited the number of resources evaluated; this will be an ongoing project as more resources become available.

Foster, Robert. "The provision, design and effectiveness of websites for local Methodist churches." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2008. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/173/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is about the nature of the relationships between Websites – which enable global access to data and interaction – and local churches – which are congregations whose core focus is on particular, geographically-located, communities. It considers the thesis that there are significant inequalities in the provision, design and effectiveness of local Methodist church Websites which, if addressed, could result in a more consistent approach to Website provision within the Methodist Church and in better mission outcomes from the resources that are invested in Website design. The argument presented plays a part in the integration of the fields of missiology and information technology, making an original contribution to knowledge because of the way in which macro-missiological issues related to the use of technology are considered along with the micro-missiological issues related to local church Websites and the local mission priorities of individual churches. In conjunction with the gathering of new data about local church mission priorities and Websites and the production of original statistical information, new insights are revealed concerning the deployment of information technology in the context of Christian mission and, in particular, new insights into the deployment of Website technology in the context of local Methodist churches.
