Morgan, Tezonia Rushan. "Perspectives of Secular Counselors Regarding Christian Counseling Forgiveness Therapy." ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/4390.

Full text
Abstract:
Forgiveness is a concept that is strongly rooted in Christianity. Forgiveness therapy was developed with Christian principles and has proven to be successful for Christian counselors. However, forgiveness has not been explored from the perceptions of secular counselors. Specifically, it is not known if secular counselors are using concepts that are similar to Christian forgiveness therapy. Using forgiveness therapy, this qualitative grounded theory study described the experiences, thoughts, and understanding of forgiveness from the views of secular counselors. Research questions addressed if secular mental counselors have a concept similar to forgiveness therapy as defined in the Christian counseling literature. Individual interviews were recorded via Zoom, transcribed, open coded, and analyzed to produce themes. The 10 themes that were generated from the data included (a) varied theoretical orientations, (b) need to address/assess client anger, (c) perceptions of anger, (d) various meanings of forgiveness, (e) views on reconciliation, (f) acceptance and moving forward, (g) working with client trauma, (h) mindfulness is the key, (i) participants' lives and their personal resiliency, and (j) same approach used to address various types of anger. The results demonstrated that the secular counselors in this study believed that forgiveness is not needed to address anger. Counselors who read this study will gain a greater understanding of forgiveness, as well as counseling techniques and theories used to address anger from the standpoint of secular counselors. Information from this study may be used in the development and education of all counselors and will increase understanding of varied approaches in counseling.

Schaefer, Paul. "Experiences of Conservative Orthodox Christian Students Attending Public Secular Accredited Counseling and Counseling Psychology Graduate Programs." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2006. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/391.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of conservative orthodox Christian students attending public, secular, accredited counseling and counseling psychology graduate programs. Conservative orthodox Christian students who were attending public, secular, accredited counseling and counseling psychology graduate programs were recruited by email. A prescreening interview was conducted with each respondent. Seven respondents participated in three rounds of individual interviews. The overall research question was: What are the experiences of conservative orthodox Christian students attending public, secular, accredited counseling and counseling psychology graduate programs? Follow-up questions explored the participants' perceptions and experiences in depth. Data were analyzed through within case and cross case displays using a phenomenological approach. Emergent categories, themes, and descriptors were gathered from each round of interviews. Data were organized into three major categories: reflections on secular programs, experiences attending secular programs and Christian identity, and further organized into underlying themes and descriptors. Implications related to conservative orthodox Christian students attending public, secular, accredited counseling and counseling psychology graduate programs were discussed. Finally, suggestions for future research were provided.

White, Theresa Grant. "Attitudes, Experiences, and Perceptions of Rural Christian Counselors with Regard to Self-Care." ScholarWorks, 2014. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/172.

Full text
Abstract:
Rural Christian counselors are a distinct group of individuals faced with unique personal and professional challenges. Researchers have indicated that rural counselors experience a higher burnout rate due to wide practice scope; client stigma against receiving help; and physical isolation, making supervision, consultation, and referral difficult. Studies also show that self-care is an effective defense against the symptoms of burnout. Self-care is defined as any legal activity that promotes wellness and brings physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual balance. The central research question of this hermeneutic phenomenology examined the attitudes, perceptions, and experiences of rural Christian counselors with regard to self-care. The conceptual framework was interpreted using social constructivism and hermeneutic phenomenological lenses and was based on self-care, Christian counseling, and action theories. A convenience sample of 9 participants contributed to semistructured interviews; these interviews were analyzed according to methods suggested by Flood, Rubin and Rubin, and Creswell, resulting in saturation and synthesis of the information. Findings indicated that participants understood the importance of and practiced individual styles of self-care, but did not consider current levels of self-care practice as adequate. Feelings of guilt and perceived superior strength in others inhibited self-care efforts. Social change implications include the continued education and encouragement of self-care among this group to help combat burnout, compassion fatigue, and premature retirement. Rural counselors and the small communities they serve could both benefit from increased awareness and practice of self-care activities.

Abstract:

Utilizing twelve case studies, this project hypothesized that participants from diverse contexts would develop the ability to understand the correct meaning of their dreams, without mediation, as modeled by the researcher. The researcher and an observer interpreted participant's dreams during six meetings, using biblical symbolism and relying upon inspiration from the Holy Spirit. Many participants perceived the meaning of their dreams following the exercise of Christian dream interpretation. The observers verified that many of the participant dream interpretations resonated with Scripture and the person of the Holy Spirit. Participants received guidance, encouragement, and healing, and expressed significantly increased interpretive acumen.

Abstract:

The author presents the lack of deliverance ministry in the Evangelical church world as being incongruent with biblical, theological and historical underpinnings and, as such, forms a significant hindrance to its effective mission. To demonstrate the efficacy of deliverance, the author surveyed 46 Christian leaders on 98 possible effects of their personal deliverance experience. The author concluded that deliverance renders significant and broad positive effects in the individual leader and makes numerous recommendations pertaining to the inclusion of deliverance in ongoing church ministry, discipleship strategies and global mission.

Thacker, Andi. "An Investigation of the Perceptions of Christian Seminary Counseling Students Regarding Play Therapy." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2010. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc30520/.

Full text
Abstract:
The threefold purpose of this study was to assess the extent to which counseling seminary students' beliefs corresponded to the tenets of child-centered play therapy, the amount of training seminary counseling students received in the area of child counseling and play therapy, and the applicability of child-centered play therapy courses in seminary counselor education programs. The researcher pursued this purpose through administration of a survey instrument she developed. The instrument consisted of 22 demographic items and 23 5-point Likert scale items based on the tenets of child-centered play therapy. The sample was comprised of 206 seminary counseling students from 12 Christian seminaries across the United States: 155 female and 51 male participants ranging in age from 21 to 60 years old and including 5.3% African American, 3.9% Asian, 1.5% Biracial/Multiracial, 3.4% Hispanic, 83% White (Non-Hispanic), 2.4% Other. Multiple regression analysis was utilized to determine which demographic variables were significant predictors of respondents' beliefs regarding child-centered play therapy. Results indicated significance at p < .05 level. Specifically, respondents who reported feeling more prepared to counsel children reported beliefs more congruent with child-centered play therapy, and respondents from the Southwestern and Southeastern portions of the United States exhibited beliefs less congruent with child-centered play therapy. Respondents' reports of their gender, age, denominational grouping, counseling theory, previous training to work with children, parental status, and future plans to counsel children did not significantly predict beliefs corresponding to child-centered play therapy. Descriptive data revealed that 83.5% of respondents intended to counsel children after completing their graduate studies, yet only 20.4% of respondents reported having completed coursework in child counseling; thus, they appeared inadequately prepared to work with this specialized population. Implications for seminary counselor education programs are discussed.

Farris, Kristin Kay 1964. "Personality characteristics of Christian counselors as a predictor of job satisfaction." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/277872.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined the personality characteristics of Christian counselors and determined whether those characteristics could be employed to predict job satisfaction. The objectives of the study included determining if Christian counselors differ from the general population on any of the nine personality traits found in the Taylor-Johnson Temperament Analysis and determining if a correlation exists between the nine traits and reported job satisfaction. Data was collected from 51 self-identified Christian counselors from Arizona and California. The results indicate that Christian counselors are more expressive-responsive and less depressive and subjective than the general population. While those Christian counselors who indicated high job satisfaction tended to be less depressive and subjective and more expressive-responsive than those who indicated medium or low job satisfaction, it was shown that personality traits are not predictive of job satisfaction in Christian counselors.

Full text
Abstract:

Performance-based identity and sexual scripts play a critical role in shaping the masculine identity of young adult Christian males, undermining their spiritual formation. Young men’s perceptions of, and interactions with, family culture, non-Christian peers, and society at large further intensify the impact of these scripts. The negative results of these influences include a license for premarital sex, the delay of marriage, and a view of manhood inconsistent with the good news of salvation by grace through Christ Jesus. Through interviews with eleven young adult men these scripts were identified and labeled to capture the characteristics of these sexual narratives. Eight scripts were discovered and named such as Stud, Venus, C.R.E.A.M, and Bachelor Pad among others. For instance, the Stud script is a young man who has achieved experiential wisdom and self-confidence from having lost his virginity. Most Studs typically experience a time of high sexual activity before moving into monogamous sexual relationships. The benefit of being initiated into the script removes any regrets from having engaged in premarital sex even though most were only teenagers. Ironically entry into the status of Stud occurred through the initiation of a Venus. Venus describes the assertive young lady, for most a fellow teenager, who was the co-initiator in the loss of virginity. Venus however was not a one-time sexual relationship but also the description of the sexual desires and expectations of their female counterparts.
