Abstract:

This study investigated the caregivers' most highly valued factors for enrolling their children in Christian schools. Caregivers (N = 297) were included from more than 39 California Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) schools. They responded to survey questions regarding their most highly valued factors for enrolling their children in Christian schools. The survey considered factors from five categories: (a) biblical values, (b) academics, (c) school culture, (d) student-centeredness, and (e) economic considerations. The study found their highest valued factors to be biblical values and care of the student. Quality academics, safe environment, and number of highly qualified teachers were also found to be highly valued factors. Factors that were found not likely to be important to caregivers were adherence to state standards, attention to special learning needs, technology in the classroom, fine arts, athletic programs, tuition and other school expenses, and distance from the home.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to design an appropriate curriculum for early Christian education in the context of Korean early Christian education, which has not been fully developed and in which country there have been but few such curricula in Christian schools for young children. For the designing of a curriculum which will be effective in content and method, the study of Piaget's theory as one which can be helpful for the effectiveness of early childhood education is essential. This aim is developed in chapter 1. In chapter 2, in order to understand Piaget's cognitive development theory clearly, the definition of terms, the factor of the sensori-motor period, and that of the pre-operational period are dealt with. To assist in the understanding of Piaget's theory, terms such as schema, assimilation, accommodation, and equilibration are defined and exemplified. In chapter 3, the educational implications of Piaget's theory, for specifically Christian education, yielded up three categories: sequencing and content of curriculum, and methodology of teaching. The Kamii and Lavatelli programmes based on Piaget's theory are discussed. Children's God-concept development theories of Goldman, Williams, and Elkind - based on Piaget's theory - are discussed in chapter 4. Goldman found in his research that there are three main stages of children's religious thinking: the pre-religious stage, the sub-religious stage, and the religious stage.

Abstract:
Experts do not agree on the definition of spiritual development although positive spiritual development benefits society in many ways. Without agreement on the definition of spiritual development and a common understanding of spiritual development, parents, teachers, and pastors who are entrusted with the task of fostering positive spiritual development in Christian settings face the challenges of determining what spiritual development is (definition), the desired goals (culmination) of spiritual development, and the most effective ways to meet those goals (context and content). The purpose of this study was to use data, from the social sciences and Christian points of view, to inform Christian education programs and arrive at recommendations for fostering young children's spiritual development. Data sources include textual literature from the social science and Christian points of view. In addition, the researcher gathered interview data from twenty children's pastors. Research results included: 1. It is possible that spirituality is associated with sensory awareness. 2. Examining spirituality as sensory awareness may lead to focusing on innate qualities of spiritual capacity with a more focused inclusion of children with special needs in faith-based programs, a God-given conscience, and consideration that children may be born with spiritual gifts to express their spiritual nature. 3. Congregations/parishes under utilize intergenerational activities, time for quiet and reflection, and opportunities to talk to children about spiritual matters.

Abstract:
This thesis explores how and why literature and reading, as a practice within Christian families, can play an influential role in the spiritual formation of children. The first part presents a picture of Christian parenting, drawn from three theologians: Karl Barth on parents and children, based in the doctrines of creation and Christology, and the I/Thou relationship; the Roman Catholic doctrine of family as ‘domestic church’, as discussed by Florence Caffrey Bourg; and Stanley Hauweras, largely concerning his emphases of a Christian ethic, the narrative structure of life, and the Body of Christ as essential for raising children. The second part moves to investigate philosophy and literary theory, in order to show how literature is formative, from three philosophers: Richard Eldridge sees it as intellectually educational as one moves between autonomy and embeddedness in moral personhood; Martha Nussbaum argues that it is emotionally experiential, returning emotions, imagination and particulars to a central part of the search for a good life; and Wayne C. Booth presents it as an educating experience, in which one should fully engage with the work, reflect upon it, and share one’s assessments in discussion. In the last chapter and conclusion, four major themes are discussed—individuals in community, narrativity, the good life of faith, and open closure—in order to bring into clearer focus the ways literature and its formative nature can enhance the raising of children in faith, the task of Christian parents.

Abstract:
To Know Worship and Love is the religious instruction curriculum produced and mandated for use by the Archdiocese of Melbourne. The primary series comprises a Teaching Companion and Student Text for every level of education, Preparatory to Year 6. This study undertakes examination of the series to determine if biblical metaphors for God which contain a physical vehicle are used and presented within it in accord with the accepted exegetical practices of the Church. The study begins by examining Church documents that pertain to both religious instruction and Scripture to determine a set of principles which should guide the use of Scripture. Notable among the six principles elucidated is the expectation that the use of Scripture should reflect accepted exegetical practices of the Church. These are defined as those which enable a clear understanding of the literal sense of Scripture, as ascertained through use of the Historical-Critical method. In order to come to a sound understanding of the literal sense of metaphors, the study reviews how they work and what results from their use. Such a review is important for two reasons. First, in the finding that metaphors for God prompt the formation of a concept of God, the need for their valid interpretation in religious instruction is stressed. Second, it enables the articulation of eight specific requirements for the interpretation of biblical metaphors for God. Subsequent examination of the series against what is required reveals that of the eight requirements, only one is provided within the series. No unit or activity identifies the sixty-three biblical metaphors cited in the series and no unit teaches students how they work to communicate meaning. No unit provides information of the vehicles used within their historical setting and no unit explains the historical circumstances which gave rise to the dominance of certain metaphors.;In order to explain why biblical metaphors for God are presented so poorly in To Know Worship and Love, the use of Scripture generally in the series is examined against the six principles drawn from Church documents. The finding that the series does not observe the principles which should guide the use of Scripture, in particular, the finding that the series does not use accepted exegetical practices of the Church, provides significant insight into the inadequate presentation of metaphors. The study concludes by making three recommendations. First, it recommends that a process of rewriting To Know Worship and Love must be undertaken immediately. Second, it recommends that the use and placement of Scripture in religious instruction programmes in the future adhere to the six principles of the Church outlined in this study. Third, it recommends that the clear and accurate teaching of what metaphors and how they work be made a priority in religious instruction programmes.

Secularist views are a challenge to the field of religious education. Their worldview and influence in society will be discussed. This study evaluates the theocratic model under the apartheid regime, the co–operative model and the religion policy under the new democratic government. The areas that the researcher investigated in this study are centred on the effectiveness of the mission calling of the School of Tomorrow, Accelerated Christian Education. In order to achieve this outcome, the history of ACE Schools in America and South Africa will be discussed, as well as the role of the school, the parent and the teacher in missio Dei. An analysis and evaluation will be done on Christian educators such as Martin Luther, John Calvin and John Knox, as well as educational deform under Hitler. A study will be done on how Biblical doctrine was formed in children’s lives in the Old and New Testament.
