The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known as LDS Church or Mormon Church, typifies a conservative Christian branch that has been moving through phases in its views on homosexuality. We apply a historical-sociological framework, valid for most of Christianity, to identify how Mormon church leaders shifted from ambiguous tolerance to condemnation of homosexuality. A moral-theological rationale grew only afterwards. Individual church leaders determined the tone which morphed from homophobic to empathetic rhetoric with the nurture-nature debate, the fight against same-sex mar

The city of Cincinnati, we know, can be an engaging place, but federal judge Arthur Spiegel also found, in the mid-'90s, that it could be quite a vexing place. The city council of Cincinnati had passed what was called the Human Rights Ordinance of 1992, which barred virtually all species of discrimination—including discrimination on the basis of “Appalachian origin.” But the bill also encompassed a bar on discrimination based on “sexual orientation.” This kind of bill, in other places, had been turned into a club to be used against evangelical Christians who might refuse, on moral grounds, to

Older gays and lesbians are one of the most invisible social groups as they experience “double invisibility”: in Western societies that celebrate youth, they are invisible as older and as older homosexuals. Existing research shows a different structure of social networks of older gays and lesbians compared to older heterosexuals, it points to fears of discrimination in care activities and feelings of exclusion from the LGBT community, which, like society at large, is defined by youth.
