Abstract:
AbstractPhilip van Dijk was an important eighteenth-century painter-dealer. During this period lots of dealers in paintings started out as painters, a combination also found previously in the seventeenth century. Quite a few painters began dealing due to the falling demand for contemporary art in the eighteenth century, and some of them sought new outlets abroad where there were many well-off collectors interested in both contemporary Dutch painters and the masters of the seventeenth century. Van Dijk, too, built up a clientele both locally in The Hague and abroad. Bills and receipts from Joha

Matthias Knutzen (born 1646 – died after 1674) was the first author we know of who self-identified as an atheist (Schröder 2010: 8). Before this, the term had solely been used pejoratively to label others. While Knutzen is almost completely forgotten now, authors such as Ludwig Feuerbach, Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche, or Sigmund Freud are better remembered and might even be considered classic writers in the history of the atheist criticism of religion. Whatever may be said about the influence of any one of these authors, there is no doubt that Germany looks back on a notable history in this

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper addresses a chapter of Third World church history and the need for an ecumenical perspective in the study of church history. Ludwig I. Nommensen is a part of the history of the church in Indonesia. He - like other Western missionaries - has identified himself with the Batak people of Sumatra in unfailing dedication. His life and work in Sumatra have been of great impact. In the memory of Indonesian Christians he lives on as the venerated "apostle of the Batak." In Europe, the region of his origin, however, his legacy has as yet to be interpreted more widely. Nommensen, the W
