Abstract:
More social participation is regarded as one of the potential benefits of digitalisation. What are the opportunities offered by digitalisation and what are the risks of social groups being marginalised? What responsibilities do welfare organisations, social services, politics and administrative bodies have in this respect? In this book, the authors address political, technical and ethical questions. They reveal which structures lead to increased social participation and examine how these structures are organised for, among others, families, young people, people with disabilities, people with immigrant backgrounds and the unemployed. This special volume provides a comprehensive insight into the subject of social participation as a key aspect of the digital revolution. In order to promote increased participation, it presents how the effects of digitalisation on social participation have developed and suggests concrete courses of action. Abstract:
Work, employment and their regulation have been facing profound challenges in the digital economy. This book analyzes the resulting dynamics of autonomy and control on crowdworking platforms in an interdisciplinary perspective, which brings together law, sociology and organisation studies. On the basis of empirical studies of crowdworking in Germany, the authors find crowdworking platforms to be recursive and adaptive. Therefore, regulators should not make the mistake of reducing them to placing services. de Haan, Ido. The Western European Welfare State Beyond Christian and Social Democratic Ideology. Edited by Dan Stone. Oxford University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199560981.013.0015.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the most striking features of Europe's postwar history is the emergence of the welfare state. Even though the first social policies had already been introduced in the 1880s, and while many of the organisational forms that became entrenched after 1945 were initiated in the first half of the twentieth century, the size and impact of the postwar welfare state was unprecedented. Even more remarkable was the widespread consensus with which structural social and economic reforms were implemented. The deep political and social rifts of the 1920s and 1930s and the lack of trust in democratic means to overcome these confrontations had been replaced by the acceptance of an interventionist state and parliamentary democracy as the way to solve conflicts about the way in which this state distributed social goods. The swift and consensual growth of the welfare state is also remarkable because most western European countries were governed by conservative governments, or coalition governments in which Social Democrats had to share power with conservative Christian Democrats and Liberals.

Abstract:
About ten years ago, we were still able to justify the reservations of sociology with regard to digitisation as a healthy caution against the hype of the ‘virtual world’ and ‘cyberspace’; today, the situation looks different: beyond the usual rhetoric of media revolutions, new forms of practice, organisation and order have emerged around digital technologies in more or less all fields, posing tangible challenges to sociological theory-building, methods development and empirical social research. Are our theories based on action, communication or practice suitable for describing the contribution of algorithms? Are our methods for dealing with language, images and printed text suitable for analysing the automatic modification of texts, images and videos by filter technologies? How do we deal with increasing competition in data analysis and evaluation? These are the questions that this special volume of the journal ‘Soziale Welt’ (ISSN 0038-6073) explores. With contributions by Dirk Baecker, Sascha Dickel, Tobias Wolbring, Barbara Sutter, Sabine Maasen, Elke Wagner, Niklas Barth, Katharina Kinder-Kurlanda, Roger Häußling, Udo Thiedeke, Josef Wehner, Nicole Zillien, Bernadette Kneidinger-Müller, Heike Greschke, Jagoda Motowidlo, René König, Patrik Sumpf, Christian Stegbauer, Alexander Mehler, Oliver Nachtwey, Philipp Staab, Andreas Boes, Tobias Kämpf, Alexander Zielger, Sabine Pfeiffer, Anne Suphan, Uli Meyer, Uwe Matzat, Erik van Ingen, Christian Papsdorf, Tanja Carstensen, Jeffrey Wimmer, John Postill, Victor Lasa, Ge Zhang, Evelyn Ruppert

Abstract:
Digitalisation is creating new challenges and opportunities for the world of work and labour policy. The contributions in this volume discuss key developments in this field and labour policy strategies for dealing with the digitalisation of work: the shifting of spatial and temporal boundaries in the organisation of work, new initiatives of interest representation to regulate work, organise employees and mobilise workers in transnational contexts, and, finally, the prospects of shaping the design of work in digital working worlds. The book emphasises that the challenges of regulating and shaping work in digital contexts and the opportunities to do so are intertwined with other trends. Full text
Abstract:
On the evening of 26 August 2009, the last known pipistrelle emerges from its day-time shelter on Christmas Island. Scientists, desperate about its conservation, set up a maze of netting to try to catch it. It is a forlorn and futile exercise – even if captured, there is little future in just one bat. But the bat evades the trap easily, and continues foraging. It is not recorded again that night, and not at all the next night. The bat is never again recorded. The scientists search all nearby areas over the following nights. It has gone. There are no more bats. Its corpse is not, will never be, found. It is the silent, unobtrusive death of the last individual. It is extinction. This book is about that bat, about those scientists, about that island. But mostly it is an attempt to understand that extinction; an unusual extinction, because it was predicted, witnessed and its timing is precise. A Bat's End is a compelling forensic examination of the circumstances and players surrounding the extinction of the Christmas Island pipistrelle. A must-read for environmental scientists, policy-makers, and organisations and individuals with an interest in conservation.

Full text
Abstract:
Religions are increasingly being regarded as relevant partners in international development cooperation due to their special attributes. However, to date there has been little research into what the special attributes of religious development agencies actually are or how such organisations employ them. What resources do religious NGOs draw on in development cooperation? How do such NGOs differ from other development agencies? Does their engagement make a considerable difference to collaborative development work? Using empirical case studies and theoretical analysis, the contributions in this book address these questions. In doing so, they examine different religions and their collaborative development work in various regions of the world, and chart the most recent changes in religions. Full text
Abstract:
The health of the military is of central importance both from an internal perspective as well as in terms of a state’s response capacities. This anthology looks at these issues in five chapters: Starting from the basics of health in the military (saluto genesis, differential health promotion, the instrumentality of military medicine), the various contributions it contains deal with the daily challenges of staying healthy in the military (the function and expectations of the members of the organisation, concepts to ensure one’s health, food in the military, inclusivity and aspects of sexual harassment). Health during missions is particularly important (the preservation of mental health, palliative medical care, rehabilitation after a mission). The book also looks at the INVICTUS Games and, in the end, explores questions relating to healthy leadership by examining problem-solving concepts in sports, referring to an empirical study and comparing leadership practices and health in business and the military. Full text
Abstract:
The chapters in this edited volume include a vibrant mix of scholars from political science, sociology, criminology, law, and practical experiences. This volume is the first of its kind in German-speaking countries addressing the complex issue of ‘drugs, darknet and organized crime’. The multidisciplinary approaches to the new phenomenon demonstrate that cryptomarkets poses a multi-layered challenge. Classical concepts like ‘organized crime’ need to be expanded and call for new explanatory approaches. Organisational structures of anonymous online drug markets must be reassessed. Likewise, the development of cryptomarkets has implications for drug policy regarding drug prevention, drug counselling, criminal investigation and the judiciary. Finally, the question arises how to best regulate both offline and online drug markets. In view of those challenges, the various contributions in this reader deal with actors, underlying structures and economic transactions on drug markets in the Internet.
