Summary This paper explores pastoral care as a common task of all Christians in the light of theology and philosophy of love in contemporary Finnish Lutheran theology. Pastoral care is about taking care of one’s suffering neighbours, which theologically is about love. The so-called Finnish school of Luther studies considered Luther as a theologian of love. Finnish theological ethics has concentrated on interpretation of Luther’s theology. Luther’s concept of love has been reinterpreted by Risto Saarinen with the idea of gift and recognition. Abstract This blueprint for a constructive public theology assumes that Christian theology already includes public discourse. Following David Tracy’s delineation of three publics—church, academy, culture—further constructive work leads to a public theology conceived in the church, reflected on critically in the academy, and meshed with the wider culture. Public reflection on classic Christian doctrines in a post-secular pluralistic context takes the form of pastoral illumination, apologetic reason, a theology of nature, political theology, and prophetic critique.

In making a substantive argument I rely on the Lutheran “two ways that God reigns” approach in which we share “places of responsibility” with all humans, but in which the Christian virtues of faith, love, and hope transform those places into genuine Christian callings. In much contemporary theology, pastoral/practical theology, and much of the more popular ‘Christian’ literature there is a concern for exploring and discovering various aspects of right relationship. These relationships might be political, marital, familial, sexual, economic, those within the church, or between the church and the greater society. What seems to be lacking in many of these discussions is an adequate theological foundation upon which to carry out the exploration. There are assumptions made about the nature of human relationships which seem to have no connection to theological und

Considering the intermingling of problems in today’s multi-crisis environment, this text explores the possibilities of intertwining social work and pastoral care. In the search for effective approaches, we find dynamic patterns in the activities of the Royová (Roy) sisters. Their diaconal work is an important source for social work history illustrating how social work took the form of diaconal (charity) work with a rich pastoral reach at the time. Their activities represent a natural link between Christian anthropology and social work. This study mainly investigates the Christian (spiritual) b

In this article, I would like to see how a religion function one’s mind. In order to do so, I will begin with reviewing Freud and Kohut’s thoughts on religion. Although their emphasis on the function of religion would be different, it can be said that the religion affects people’s minds both positively and negatively. Religious addiction can be an example of a negative side of religion; religion has a positive function in that it gives hope and comfort to human beings. Having said that, I wonder how religion would function in the psyche of Korean Christian women when facing domestic violence b

Generally, all religions in Africa including Christianity are numerically dominated by women, yet women experience exclusion and oppression in sacred spaces. This oppression and exclusion are worse for women and girls with disabilities due to the ableist theologies perpetuated in spaces of worship. This is enforced by the regulations that govern the physical structures and boundaries of spaces of faith. As a result, religious spatial politics is intertwined with how the body physically and spiritually conforms to the regulations of a certain religion. In conservative forms of Christianity, the

Time is often viewed as a commodity. We “have” time. We “spend” time. As a result, we most often see time as limited. We cannot find time. We need more time. But time is not a commodity. God gifts us with time and we discern–wisely or not–how to engage it. This article explores how conceptions of time are culturally  constructed, and examines theological and scriptural  perspectives on time, to posit a practical theology for how Christian leaders can receive the gift of time given by God and discern how to engage time as God intends.

The paper explores Martin Luther's stance on Old Testament law, specifically his dismissal of the Mosaic law’s binding nature for Christians. It argues that Luther’s reliance on natural law as an inherent instinct for grasping the order of creation raises challenges due to the inherent ambiguity and fallen nature of human understanding. The analysis delves into biblical, philosophical, and historical perspectives on natural law, underscoring the intricacies surrounding its practical application. Through engaging with a gritty Marxian class analysis Niebuhr launched his attack upon the social idealism of so much of the Christian witness of his generation. In mid-life the critique of liberalism and his ‘Christian realism’ are informed by a wrestling with the Augustinian and Reformation traditions. Later still Christian realism gives way to a more pragmatic chastened liberalism. The dualism between the personal and so

Abstract The relationship between theology and the social sciences has often been tenuous, mainly due to methodological differences. However, the relationship between the two is quite evident in such areas as pastoral theology and Christian Education, which combine theology with sociological data. This paper attempts to argue in support of a greater relationship between the two, especially between the areas of ecumenical dialogue and social psychology. It addresses the question: How can ecumenical dialogue be re-thought, in the light of insights from social psychology, in order to give room fo
