Abstract:
This fascinating study examines America's complex and confusing history of arguing with itself over religion and secularism, God and politics, church and state. Hundreds of books are devoted to the ever-timely subject of the separation of church and state in America, but none does exactly what Christian Nation?: The United States in Popular Perception and Historical Reality does. Unlike other studies, this intriguing examination asks the right questions, defines the terms of the debate, explores the widely diverging points of view with equal respect for all sides, and provides insightful comme

Abstract A quintessential liberal value, tolerance, according to a common liberal narrative, addresses the problem of monotheistic religious violence by protecting the individual freedoms of religion and conscience through the separation of church and state and side-lining judgments about the common good. Setting aside this liberal narrative, my book recovers tolerance’s origins in a North African Christian tradition that derives accounts of political judgment and patience within pluralistic communities from theological reflection on God’s roles as a patient father and just judge. Abstract:
This final chapter presents a case study of Brethren IV, known today as the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church (PBCC). It starts with a discussion of the legal case before the British Charity Commission, which lasted from 2006 to 2014, and finally led to the recognition of the PBCC as a bona fide religious body. The case is analysed in the context of controversies surrounding in various countries the PBCC and its schools. Some Christians accuse the PBCC of being heretic, and some secular ‘anti-cultists’ see in the PBCC a ‘cult’ harmful to its members and particularly to children. In general, t

Drawing primarily on Dutch and Afrikaans archival sources including the Dutch Reformed Church Archive and private collections this book presents a trans-generational narrative of the influence and role played by diasporic Scots and their descendants in the religious and political lives of Dutch/ Afrikaner people in British colonial southern Africa. It demonstrates how this Scottish religious culture helped to develop a complex counter-narrative to what would become the mainstream discourse of Afrikaner Christian nationalism in the early 20th century. Abstract:
What impact has Christianity had on law and policies in the Lowlands from the eleventh century through the end of the twentieth century? Taking the gradual 'secularization' of European legal culture as a framework, this volume explores the lives and times of twenty legal scholars and professionals to study the historical impact of the Christian faith on legal and political life in the Low Countries. The process whereby Christian belief systems gradually lost their impact on the regulation of secular affairs passed through several stages, not in the least the Protestant Reformation, which led t

Plymouth Brethren are a larger Christian movement, including a dozen of different denominations. They originate from a 19th-century revival in the British Isles, around John Nelson Darby—regarded by some of the father of the evangelical fundamentalist movement—and others who dreamed to restore the purity of primitive Christianity. The revival eventually extended to Continental Europe, particularly Switzerland and Italy, and later France and Germany, as well as to United States, Canada, and China. While some lived this dream in ecumenical terms, those who would eventually be called Exclusive Br

Abstract:
For Joseph Ratzinger, the separation between ontology and history constitutes the crucial problem that underlies all the difficulties of contemporary dogmatic theology since it affected the original unity of two essential dimensions of Christian revelation. This study delves into Joseph Ratzinger's approach to the problem, his account of the path that led to this separation, and into some key insights, drawn from his understanding of human salvation that could contribute to overcoming this dichotomy that afflicts contemporary theology. Through the study of Joseph Ratzinger's writings, Troconis

Abstract:
For a long time, jurisprudence believed that it did not have to deal with the relationship between the law and knowledge. Through the clear separation of factual and legal issues, the problem seemed to have been clarified. But for some years now, the idea of the law having a ‘cognitive dimension’ has been discussed more and more intensively. On the one hand, there are calls to abolish the separation of factual and legal issues, because the law itself (co-)determines the knowledge base necessary for its application. On the other hand, this separation should be maintained or restituted at the sa
