No presente trabalho, buscamos analisar a tradução de um texto normativo, no caso, a primeira seção da Bundesdatenschutzgesetz (BDSG), a Lei Federal de Proteção de Dados Pessoais alemã, fundamentada nos princípios da teoria funcionalista da tradução, tal como concebida pela teórica alemã Christiane Nord. Trata-se de visualizar e discutir a possibilidade e a adequação da aplicação do modelo de Nord à resolução dos problemas da tradução de uma lei. Na consecução deste objetivo, empreendemos uma leitura dos fatores extra e intratextuais da BDSG e, a partir da identificação dos elementos textuais relevantes nas culturas fonte e alvo, explicitamos os caminhos para algumas das decisões tradutórias firmadas. Cabe salientar que a presente tradução foi elaborada sob um viés documental, tem finalidade especificamente informativa e é destinada a um público alvo de estudiosos do direito público, especialmente aqueles interessados no direito à informação. Nossa conclusão aponta para a possibilidade e adequação do modelo de Christiane Nord, pois que proporciona uma clara visualização da macro e microestrutura textuais, o que capacita o tradutor a visualizar melhor o processo tradutório, problematizando suas opções e definindo conscientemente suas escolhas. De fato, pensamos que a única lacuna do modelo de Nord, no que diz respeito à tradução jurídica, é a referente à terminologia. Entendemos que, na tradução jurídica, mormente nos textos normativos, faz-se necessária a utilização do instrumental proporcionado pela Terminologia, com o qual o resultado ganha qualidade e legitimidade.

Abstract:

This paper is the comment and analysis of the translation of a chapter in a book of Erik Orsenna, Sur la route du papier. An essay about the history and the industry of paper written in a personal and litterary tone. Justifying once own subjective choises in a translation is not an easy thing to do. With the functionnalist method designed by Christiane Nord we manage however to build a context and a purpose for the target-text that give fruitful and objective arguments to the choices made during the translation. We use Nord’s method of functionnalist analyses by dividing the source text in text functions that are being revised and discussed during the analysis. But can we define a single strategy for our translation? The source-text is very diversified and crosses many different genres such as : litterature, science, journalism and autobiography. To find and define a suitable strategy seems thus to be a major challenge.

Abstract:

För att se hur olika skopoi påverkar en översättning översattes en källtext parallellt med vardera sitt specifika skopos. En facktext om vikingarna i Irland på 800-talet översattes dels för publicering i en fackbok, dels för publicering i en populärvetenskaplig tidskrift. För att analysera översättningsprocessen under de två översättningarna registrerades det som Christiane Nord (2005) kallar loopar, återkopplingar under översättningsprocessen när ny kunskap kräver en omformulering av strategin. I en egen metodutveckling av Nords modell registrerades och kategoriserades looparna. Den kvantitativa studien visar att klart flest loopar inträffar i inlednings- och avslutningsskedet av översättningen, oavsett skopos. Antalet loopar för ett skopos som går ut på att producera en nära översättning av denna vetenskapliga text, med dess specifika genremarkörer, är högre än antalet loopar vid produktionen av en kraftigt omarbetad populärvetenskaplig översättning. Den kvalitativa studien visar att kulturspecifika kategorier orsakar flest loopar och ofta kräver individuella strategier.

The Skopos theory, as formulated by Vermeer (1984), stresses that all translations have a purpose to fulfil. However, how this purpose is fulfilled depends on the strategy used by the translator. In order to see the effect of two different purposes for one and the same text, a study, conducted as two parallel annotated translations, was carried out on a scientific text about Vikings in Ireland. Nord‟s (2005) term and understanding of „translation loop‟ was used in order to pinpoint when and how often the different skopoi made it necessary to stop, make a loop, and adjust the translation strategy. The quantitative study shows a pattern where most loops occur at the start and at the end of the translation. The qualitative study of the translation loops shows that cultural aspects originate most loops, and they often demand individual strategies.

Abstract:

Il presente lavoro ha l’obiettivo di analizzare il testo tedesco del brevetto europeo EP 2 664 393 B1, il quale descrive un procedimento di saldatura a freddo noto come clinciatura, mettendone in luce le caratteristiche strutturali, lessicali, morfosintattiche e pragmatiche. Esse verranno esaminate ponendo l’accento sulle loro implicazioni in termini traduttivi, le quali emergeranno dal confronto tra la versione originale tedesca e la traduzione italiana da me realizzata durante l’esperienza di tirocinio. L’elaborato si articola in due capitoli e un’appendice. Il primo capitolo, di natura introduttiva, è dedicato alla definizione di brevetto e alla presentazione dei requisiti di brevettabilità; esso fornirà inoltre una descrizione delle diverse tipologie di brevetto esistenti e si concluderà con l’illustrazione della struttura del testo brevettuale tedesco. Nel secondo ampio capitolo, incentrato sull’analisi linguistica e traduttiva e volto a presentare le caratteristiche lessicali e morfosintattiche del tedesco brevettuale, il testo del brevetto europeo in questione sarà esaminato sulla base del modello di analisi (fattori extratestuali ed intratestuali) proposto da Christiane Nord, importante studiosa attiva soprattutto nel settore della didattica della traduzione. La distinzione, operata da Nord, fra traduzione documentaria e traduzione strumentale costituirà in seguito il punto di partenza per l’esposizione del metodo traduttivo, il quale verrà illustrato facendo particolare riferimento al livello terminologico, sintattico, testuale e pragmatico. Il capitolo si concluderà con l’analisi dei problemi e delle difficoltà di traduzione incontrate. In appendice sono infine presentati il testo originale in tedesco del brevetto europeo in esame, la mia proposta di traduzione in italiano e due glossari tedesco > italiano contenenti rispettivamente la terminologia tecnica e giuridica che contraddistingue il brevetto analizzato.

Abstract:

Obiettivo della tesi è di analizzare la traduzione in italiano del sito web turistico della città austriaca di Graz e avanzare il confronto interlinguistico tra la versione originale del sito in tedesco e la versione tradotta in italiano. Innanzitutto, viene presentata l’homepage del sito presa in esame in questa indagine. Successivamente viene descritto il modello funzionale di analisi testuale orientato alla traduzione proposto da Christiane Nord, per poi condurre l’analisi pre-traduttiva del testo di partenza in tedesco, esaminando i fattori interni, i fattori esterni e l’effetto comunicativo risultante dall’interazione tra questi. Viene poi approfondito il tema dei problemi e delle difficoltà traduttive, sempre seguendo le teorie di Nord. L’inquadramento teorico di Nord permette di identificare problemi traduttivi linguistici, legati alle convenzioni e pragmatici e le difficoltà traduttive riscontrati dal traduttore nel portare a termine il compito traduttivo in lingua italiana, nonché gli errori traduttivi veri e propri, che possono essere anch’essi linguistici, legati alle convenzioni o pragmatici. Nell’analisi comparata tra la versione tedesca e italiana, vengono presentati e analizzati esempi estratti dal sito web a titolo esemplificativo. Il metodo utilizzato per rappresentare graficamente gli esempi consiste in una tabella a tre colonne in cui vengono riportati il testo tedesco, il testo italiano e le osservazioni. In particolare, viene approfondito il tema dei realia, un problema traduttivo molto ricorrente nel sito. Infine viene avanzato un commento generale della traduzione in lingua italiana, in cui viene affermato che la traduzione riesce a realizzare la funzione comunicativa e trasmettere lo stesso effetto della versione originale in tedesco.

Abstract:

"Sur le chemin de Jerusalem" is the comprehensive examination of three unknown mosaic pavements, exhibited in the Museum of Maaret-en-Nouman in Northern Syria. A comparison with other known documents brings together elements of evidence to their provenance, to the type of building they had adorned, and to the underlying links between architectural organization and mosaic ornamental decoration in an ecclesiastic environment. The picture catalogue detailing the size and composition of each of the three mosaics dates the iconographic material from the third quarter of the fourth century to the first half of the fifth century, that period in time which witnessed the Christianization of the North Syrian countryside and a great development of Christian pilgrimages to the Holy Sites of Palestine.
The mosaic of Temanaa features the cosmographic representations of late antique Near East. With the mosaic of Beseqla, we find the earliest dated example of a decorated pavement of a paleochristian baptistery. Tell Aar is the fragmentary mosaic of an unusually early example of a five-aisle transept basilica housing apostolic remains.
The exceptional quality of these documents demonstrates how close attention to material history can effectively increase our knowledge of the growth and expansion of early Christianity.

L'étude reconstitue l'histoire d'un des grands mouvements de zone nord issu des initiatives convergentes des syndicalistes confédérés et chrétiens, puis des socialistes. Elle se divise en trois grandes sections, intitulées respectivement "le journal", "le mouvement" et "l'action", correspondant aux trois moments différents de l'histoire de Libération-Nord, dans lesquels s'insèrent des analyses transversales concernant notamment la sociologie du mouvement, ainsi que les réseaux de solidarité à l'origine de son recrutement. Dès que les liaisons avec Londres sont établies, grâce au voyage de Christian Pineau (mars-avril 1942), l'activité centrée sur la fabrication et la diffusion du journal Libération commence à s'étendre, via les réseaux Cohors et Phalanx, au renseignement économique et militaire. Au début de l'année 1943, le mouvement s'engage dans l'organisation de l'armée secrète. De manière simultanée, tout en redoublant ses efforts dans la lutte contre le STO. This study reconstitutes the history of one of the great resistance movements of the northern zone which grew out of converging initiatives of first confederated and christian trade unionits and later, from the socialists. The study is divided into three parts : journal, movement, and action, which correspond to the three different stages of the history of Liberation Nord with several cross-cutting analyses, about the sociology of the movement and the solidarity networks where recruitment was made. As soon as the links with London were established, thanks to Christian Pineau's trip in March-April 1942, activities which first centered on the production and distribution of the newspaper liberation started to spread, through the networks Cohors and Phalanx, to economic and political intelligence. At the start of 1943, the mouvement dedicated itself to the organisation of the secret army while redoubling its efforts in the struggle against the STO. By 1944 Liberation Nord became a complex structure having developed, besides its numerous militant ramifications, a true apparatus for military combat, without ever giving up its primary vocation of political propaganda, an activity which will it will continue to pursue even after the Liberation

Abstract:

This thesis offers an evaluation of and engagement with the reimagined Christian sexual politics that John Howard Yoder began arguing for and engaging in during the 1970s, collectively referred to as his "Grand Noble Experiment." Its primary goal is to present how Yoder postured his "Grand Noble Experiment" as a theological exercise. A secondary goal is to then appraise it in regards to traditional Christian understandings of sex, marriage, and community and also in regards to Yoder's own broader theopolitical work. It is hoped that by doing these things this thesis will not only shed light on Yoder's "Grand Noble Experiment" but will also help others-theological ethicists, Yoder scholars, and Christians more broadly- adjudicate its place and power within his wider corpus as they seek to discern if, and if so how, they might faithfully continue to rely on that corpus. Chapter one will give an overview of the lived history of Yoder's "Grand Noble Experiment" with a particular focus on Yoder's relationships with women around him during the 1970s. This chapter will show how Yoder's new communal sexual theology evolved in the 1970s and early 1980s and will serve as background for the discussions that follow. Chapter two will examine Yoder's efforts in the early 1970s to encourage Mennonite churches to take the loneliness and isolation of single Christians in their midst more seriously and then to restructure their communities in order to better incorporate these single brothers and sisters into their lives together. While there is little that is overtly sexual in these works, and less that is perversely so, much of what followed grew out of this early focus on singleness. Chapter three will look at a set of essays that Yoder wrote in the mid-1970s in which he offers a reappraisal of Jesus' own sexual ethics: how Jesus related to the women around him and therefore, Yoder maintains, how he would have his male followers relate to women as well. Because one of Yoder's core theological, discipular commitments was that the life of Jesus was ethically normative for Christians, the exegetical (eisegetical?) work that Yoder exhibits in these essays will be seen to be a turning point in how he presented the Church's responsibility for the care of single Christians. For Yoder, the freedom that Christians have to relate to one another through physical affection, following the witness of their Lord, brings with it a concomitant responsibility to address the physical, sexual needs of single brothers and sisters around them. Chapter four will then take an extended look at how Yoder himself presented sexuality and its place within Christian community as exhibited in his writings from the second half of the 1970s through the early 1980s. In these essays, Yoder's "Grand Noble Experiment" comes to full flower as he encourages Christians to put off the unchristian sexual inhibitions that they had inherited and to live into the full physical freedom of the Gospel, a freedom that they can enjoy with one another-married and single alike-as brothers and sisters in Christ's Body. Finally, chapter five will briefly step away from Yoder's "Grand Noble Experiment" in order to engage another segment of Yoder's corpus: his unpublished essays on marriage and divorce, collectively titled "One Flesh Until Death." Because these essays on divorce were written over the same period of time as his essays on sexuality and because of the overlap between their subjects, one might assume that the arguments contained in these two sets of essays would be sympathetic to one another. However, it will be shown in this final chapter that the politics of Yoder's "One Flesh Until Death"-the sexual politics to be sure but also the wider communal, Christian politics that it assumes-differ significantly from those of his "Grand Noble Experiment." Therefore, it is the assertion of this thesis that "One Flesh Until Death" offers a helpful juxtaposition to the "Grand Noble Experiment" and therefore that their juxtaposition can serve as a useful heuristic for evaluating the place and power of the "Grand Noble Experiment" within Yoder's wider work.

Abstract:

L’opera collettiva Vie privée et publique des animaux è una raccolta di racconti satirici, pubblicata nel 1842. I racconti sono stati scritti da numerosi autori: alcuni poco conosciuti, come P.J. Stahl e Gustave Droz, altri più celebri, come Honoré de Balzac. Tuttavia, la nascita del volume non sarebbe mai stata possibile senza il contributo del suo illustratore: J.J. Grandville. Il contenuto dei racconti, infatti, si ispirò proprio dalle sue litografie. Malgrado i riferimenti ai personaggi e agli eventi storici del tempo, i racconti riusciranno a scampare alla censura politica per via dei protagonisti a cui sarà data la parola: gli animali. Attraverso il mio lavoro di tesi ho cercato di riportare alla luce un’opera che di certo non è entrata nel canone letterario francese, ma che merita di essere riscoperta. Nel primo capitolo ho parlato della carriera artistica di Grandville, spiegando quanto il suo incontro con Balzac sia stato fondamentale per la futura collaborazione all’opera. Nel secondo capitolo ho descritto il contenuto di Vie privée et publique des animaux. L’opera è stata immaginata come un insieme di racconti scritti in prima persona dagli animali stessi, ormai stanchi di essere sfruttati dall’umanità. Verrà data a ogni animale la possibilità di scrivere un manoscritto, dando vita ad un’originale rivoluzione intellettuale. Nel terzo capitolo mi sono soffermata sull’interpretazione dei riferimenti storici e politici presenti nel testo. Nel quarto capitolo ho inserito la mia proposta di traduzione di un racconto di Balzac che non è stato tradotto nell’edizione italiana dell’opera: Guide-âne à l’usage des animaux qui veulent parvenir aux honneurs. Infine, nel commento finale, ho analizzato i problemi traduttivi che ho riscontrato seguendo le quattro categorie individuate dalla studiosa Christiane Nord. La documentazione sul contesto storico in cui Grandville e Balzac hanno vissuto è stata fondamentale per scrivere una traduzione fedele al testo di partenza.

Cette thèse porte sur un corpus hagiographique de vingt-sept textes latins d’Afrique du Nord, daté du IIe au VIe siècle. Ce corpus n’avait jamais fait l’objet d’une synthèse depuis les travaux de P. Monceaux au début du XXe siècle. Dans une première partie, tous les textes latins ont été réunis, accompagnés d’une traduction personnelle et d’un apparat des sources exhaustif : plusieurs ont fait l’objet d’une nouvelle édition critique, et un nouveau texte, la recension longue de la Passion de Marciana, a ainsi été découvert. Ce corpus fait ensuite l’objet d’une étude historique. Les deux premières parties étudient ces textes comme témoignages de la christianisation de l’Afrique, vue à travers l’étude du phénomène complexe des persécutions et du martyre. La troisième partie illustre les multiples potentialités du discours hagiographique, qui concourt à faire du martyr un nouveau héros chrétien, héritier du héros païen et du thème judéo-hellénistique du Juste souffrant. La dernière aborde le corpus comme témoignage de la culture littéraire des élites africaines et apporte une contribution à l’histoire culturelle de l’Afrique du Nord et à celle de la circulation des idées et des oeuvres. This thesis focuses on a corpus of twenty-seven hagiographic texts from Roman North Africa, dated from the second to the sixth century. None synthesis on this corpus had been made since P. Monceaux’s work in the early twentieth century. In the first part, all the latin texts were collected, together with a translation and an exhaustive research of the sources : for many ofthem I gave a new critical edition, and a new text, the long recension of the Passion of Marciana, has been discovered. This corpus is then studied from an historical point of view. The first two sections examine these texts as evidence of the christianization of Africa, through the study of the complex phenomenon of persecutions and martyrdom. The third partillustrates the multiple potentialities of hagiographic discourse, which tends to make a new Christian hero, combination of pagan hero and of the theme of Judeo-Hellenistic Just suffering. The latter addresses the corpus as evidence of the literary culture of African elites and contributes to the cultural history of North Africa and of the circulation of ideas and works. It also discusses the question of the africitas, according to the methods of the LASLA of the University of Liège, methods applied to three passions of Caesarean Mauretania

All people and culture celebrate the death for peace of the dead persons and the living one. We are interested in the question of the funeral rites in the first centuries of christian Church of the North Africa. That is why we entitled our subject :" The funeral rites of Early Christian North Africa of the 3rd in the 5th century. In the light of Tertullian, Cyprian, Lactantius and Augustine's works". We try to understand the contents of the funeral rites which presided over the Christian celebrations in honor of the dead in the christian environment of the North Africa. How did the Christians celebrated the death in the first centuries? What are the points of view of the first christian writers in the Africa Church on the pagan funeral that the Christians went on celebrating, and what is their contribution about the cult of dead in the Christian area? About the North Africa at the beginning of our era and during Roman Empire, the funeral celebrations first concerned the families. Thanks to Augustine, at the end of the 4th century and at the beginning of the 5th one, we can notice an important evolution of celebrations in honor of the dead that Tertullian, Cyprian and Lactantius had already initiated.They also acquire at this moment an ecclesial dimension, especially with the cult of the martyrs and their relics. This work presents a translation proposal, from Spanish to Portuguese, of an excerpt from the literary work El camino by Miguel Delibes, starting from the functionalist model of textual analysis oriented to the translation proposed by the German theorist Christiane Nord. This model is applicable to all types of literary as well as non-literary texts and helps the translator to make decisions, regardless of the level of his / her knowledge. The work consists of four chapters. The first chapter is divided into two parts: (i) a brief presentation of the functionalist theories of translation by Katharina Reiss, Hans J. Vermeer and Justa Holz-Mänttäri; and (ii) the presentation of the functionalist translation model proposed by Christiane Nord in 1988, which consists of the detection, through a series of questions of an objective nature, of the extratextual factors (the sender of the text, the sender’s intention, the audience, the medium, the place and the moment of communication, the text function and the motive for communication) and intratextual factors (the subject matter, the content, the pressupositions, the text composition, the non-verbal elements, the lexis, the sentence structure, the suprasegmental features). In the second chapter, this model is applied to the translation of the work El camino, with a detailed analysis of the mentioned factors and, at the same time, the comparison of the profile of the source text with the pretended profile of the target text. In the third chapter, we present the translation essay carried out within the scope of the project. Finally, in the fourth chapter, we take account of the different translation problems we encountered throughout the entire process of translation of the text, including the translation of anthroponyms, the translation of treatment forms, the problematic lexical translation and the translation of idiomatic expressions, fixed expressions and proverbs.
Este trabalho apresenta uma proposta de tradução, de espanhol para português, de um excerto da obra literária El camino de Miguel Delibes, partindo do modelo funcionalista de análise textual orientado para a tradução proposto pela teórica alemã Christiane Nord. Este modelo é aplicável a todo o tipo de textos tanto literários como não literários e ajuda o tradutor na tomada de decisões, independentemente do nível dos seus conhecimentos. O trabalho é constituído por quatro capítulos. O primeiro capítulo divide-se em duas partes: i) uma breve apresentação das teorias funcionalistas de tradução de Katharina Reiss, Hans J. Vermeer e Justa Holz-Mänttäri, e ii) a apresentação do modelo funcionalista de tradução proposto por Christiane Nord em 1988, que consiste na deteção, através de uma série de perguntas de natureza objetiva, dos fatores extratextuais (o emissor do texto, a intenção do emissor, o recetor, o meio, o local e o momento de comunicação, a função do texto e o motivo de comunicação) e intratextuais (o tema, o conteúdo e a composição do texto, as pressuposições, os elementos não verbais, o léxico, a estrutura frásica e as caraterísticas suprassegmentais). In Taiwan, watching a movie is a common and popular pastime. Thanks to the use of Chinese subtitles, the audience is able to cross the language barrier and enjoy watching movies that are not in their native language. At the beginning of my research, I contacted the motion picture distributor “Swallow Wing Film” (海鵬影業) in order to check the source text. I was informed that most German films in Taiwan are subtitled based on their English subtitles, i.e. the Chinese subtitles are a second-hand translation. Thus, the main aims of this study are to identify the inter-lingual strategies employed to translate English subtitles of a German film “Keinohrhasen” (Rabbit without ears) into Chinese and also to determine what has been lost from the original German by translating twice. In contrast with literary translation, audiovisual translation is a newly-developed field in Translation Studies. Although there are only a few researches, some scholars have presented very useful and unique perspectives. One of particular interest is vertical and diagonal subtitling by Henrik Gottlieb. Moreover, they have also recommended three important subtitle translation strategies. These are text reduction, stylistic normalization and the rendering of culture-bound terms. The theoretical framework of this investigation is based on Christane Nord’s (1997) translation theory of ‘function plus loyalty’ and Teresa Tomaszkiewicz’s (1993) classification of subtitle translation strategies. After the initial check of the translation brief, an analysis of the source-text and classification of translation forms, the corpus was divided into five parts: text-reduction, simplification of the syntax and vocabulary, rendering of cultural-bound terms, translation errors and other translation strategies (adaptation and the use of “Taiwanese Mandarin”) The results indicated that all of Tomaszkiewicz’s proposed strategies were applicable to the corpus. The most frequently used strategy was text-reduction and the most translation errors were linguistic translation errors. The study concludes that the technical and contextual constraints of German film subtitles play a crucial role in the use reduction strategies. However, the lack of comprehension of the source-language, i.e. German, and the carelessness of the translator are the main causes of most linguistic translation errors in the subtitles.

With Chinese learning fever underway, the number of Chinese learning foreigners in Taiwan, including those from Latin American, Taiwan’s diplomatic allies, seems to increase; more Chinese learning textbooks are available in the market, too. However, only few of the Chinese learning textbooks are written with Spanish translations, and most of the translations are literal translations, which may limit learners’ (readers’) understanding of cultural lexicons in source text. Therefore, this study will apply Christiane Nord’s functionalist theory to analysis the Chinese learning textbook, Hable chino con 1000 palabras, published by Overseas Chinese Affairs Council in order to establish the model of ST analysis, translation brief, and then to give another possible Spanish translation of the Chinese learning textbook. Furthermore, a qualitative internet survey designed based on the new Spanish translation will be used to question the Chinese learners, being Spanish native speakers, in order to testify the studying result and to find out whether learners’ (readers’) understanding of Chinese learning textbook can be strengthened by the translation model based on Nord’s functionalist theory. I hope this study could have some contributions to translation approaches of Chinese learning textbook in the future.

The well-developed translation industry enables target readers without language ability to read foreign literature, giving them a peek of exotic culture and the classics. Literary translation focuses on a translator’s code-switching ability, which is expected to convey the original idea of an author by producing a target text that strictly follows a translation brief. A translator should consider the trade-off between two cultures. Will a translator completely transfer everything to a reader or make slight modifications according to the target language? Do those modifications affect messages delivered to the reader? The source text, Im Westen nichts Neues, was written based on the author, Erich Maria Remarque and his experience in World War I and history. In this case, the translator should not only be familiar with the source language, but also the history of the language as well as preserving language features from a particular era. This research makes use of Christiane Nord’s functional approaches to translation as the core theory, with detailed introduction to other functionalists and their theories; namely Katharina Reiß, Hans J. Vermeer and Justa Holz-Mänttär. The analysis focuses mainly on the function and faithfulness (Funktionsgerechtigkeit und Loyalität) theories of Nord, supplemented with the translation scholar’s text types. The research looks into translation problems regarding pragmatic translation, cultural translation, linguistic translation and text-specific translation. A translation problem is closely related to a translation brief and source text analysis, in which upon close examination, a translator is able to properly deal with a translation issue. Through analysis, a translator can determine whether information should be kept or modified. In this study, the researcher gathers real examples from source texts and target texts, then classifies and discusses translations according to Nord’s theories, and concludes based on the findings and how a translator manages to handle various translation problems.

Children’s picture books in Taiwan are mostly the Chinese transla-tion of famous foreign children literature. This thesis focuses on the Chinese translation of children literature. In other words, this re-search investigates the translation problems of children’s books. This thesis looks into the Chinese translation of Helme Heine, who is a famous German writer and painter, from the perspective of Christiane Nord. Nord’s theory is concerned with translation func-tions, translation typology and faithfulness (Funktionsgerechtigkeit + Loyalität), which are employed to examine whether the function of the source text is similar to that of the target text. In addition, this research also adapts the concepts of foreignization and domestica-tion to explore how the translator deals with cultural differences in the translation.

Traducteur au pays des merveilles est une exploration de la traduction de L’écume des jours (1947) de Boris Vian. Les deux traductions du livre, Froth on the Daydream (1967) (Mood Indigo) de Stanley Chapman et Foam of the Daze (2003) de Brian Harper, font l’objet d’une comparaison portant sur les éléments propres à l’écriture de Vian. La première partie porte, de manière générale, sur les tendances des traducteurs et les critiques des textes traduits. La deuxième partie met l’accent sur les références culturelles et leurs traductions dans l’avant-propos et le premier chapitre. Ensuite, trois méthodes de création des néologismes (proposées par Jacques Bens) servent de point de départ à une exploration du langage « vianesque » dans la troisième partie. L’analyse de l’écriture de Boris Vian dans L’écume des jours ainsi que des méthodes des traducteurs, nous permet d’observer les effets de style émanant des trois textes. The concentration of the second part is on the cultural references from the foreword and the first chapter as well as their translations. Three methods for creating neologisms (put forth by Jacques Bens) then serve as a starting point for the exploration of the “vianesque” language in the third part. By analysing Boris Vian’s writing in L’écume des jours as well as the methods of the translators, we are able to observe the stylistic effects that are produced by the three texts.

This commentary focuses on the analysis of the novel genre that balances science fiction and modern myth, as well as the Christiane Nord analysis of the original text through which it explores external factors such as author, reader, intention, text function or its motive and intra-text factors such as theme and content, composition, nonverbal components, lexicon, syntax, and suprasegmental phenomena. Abstract:

This study investigated integrated learning at a Christian university, the Christian Bilingual University of the Congo (UCBC) with the view to improving higher education practice in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) which is tasked with addressing social problems. Higher education in the DRC is shaped by its colonial legacy and a teacher-centred approach focused on theory, typical of a banking-type learning and a lack of integration. These factors stifle critical thinking and initiative in students and prevent them from developing into service-oriented agents for change in their communities. The advent of Christian universities has heralded a quest for holistic training to foster character and produce civic-minded and service-oriented citizens. A qualitative study using a phenomenology as methodology investigated the lived experiences in integrated learning and service in the community of twelve purposefully selected UCBC alumni. Data was obtained through semi-structured, in-depth interviews. Findings indicated that integrated learning is holistic education which engages mind, heart, soul and body; it combines practice and theory in training and prepares students to contribute to national welfare. It occurs in a multiple component and dimensional context and is characterized by learner-centeredness, active learning and constant interaction among the school community members. It is focused on the building of the inner person of the learner. Further, participants understood transformation as part of personal development, a lifelong process that moves a person to act differently in community after his personal assumptions have been deeply revised through his encounter with integrated learning. Its impact is character development as foundation for bold action in the community, the rediscovery of one’s identity, the development of servant leadership, team work and social networking and dependence on God. Findings revealed that transformed learners initiated a change of mentality and experienced culture conversion in their communities through confronting problems and modelling servanthood. It also established the enactment of integrated learning as a contributor to personal and community transformation as a result of students’ ‘echoed words’ and actions as learning-teachers. Based on the findings recommendations were made for the strengthening of integrated learning in Christian universities.
