Abstract:

Abstract:
SummaryThe paper deals with the translation of fairy tales on the basis of cultural and language pairs (according to Christiane Nord) as well as on the basis of the Kollers Theory of equivalence. This article deals specifically with the Grimm fairy tales in numerous Czech translations and also with the Czech-German fairy tale collection Vladimír Mikolášek’s. Both corpora show parallels and differences, both in content and in form. Concrete problems, such as the equivalent lexicon or the stylistical specifics are discussed. Consideration is also given to updating and modernizing tendencies, differences between the corpora, as well as to the respective Grimm translations. Summarizing the paper, it can be said that culture is very important for the translation of fairy tales and minding cultural differences contributes to an adequate and successful translation.

Abstract:
!is article is an e"ort towards interpreting the #ndings of a corpus-based stylisticanalysis of the short narrative “Sickert at St Peter’s” (1942), written by the Englishwriter and painter Denton Welch (1915–1948), within the larger framework fortranslation-oriented text analysis presented by Christiane Nord in Textanalyseund Übersetzen (2009). !e aim is to explore both the theoretical possibilities andthe practical applications of a corpus-based approach to the lexical analysis phaseof Nord’s model from a literary translation perspective, in which style and wordchoice play a critical role. Once the statistical #ndings of the corpus-based analysisare presented, the 25 highest-ranking keywords in the text are analyzed in context.Translation briefs and literary translation in general are discussed, and a globalpre-translational strategy for translating “Sickert at St Peter’s” is presented. By wayof conclusion, it is argued that the method described promotes valuable insights forliterary interpretation and serves as a practical aid in developing a pre-translationalstrategy for translating individual texts.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Between translation and history. The functionalist approach of translation in historical investigation in the study of Discurso sobre la forma de reducir la disciplina militar a mejory antiguo estadoThis paper analyses the possibilities of application of some elements of translation studies into historical investigation. When analyzing a historical source, a historian works also as a translator and often, unaware of this, changes the meaning of the original information, that will eventually reshape the results of his final results [?]. History as a science does not use the language separated from the original terms for example concerning institutions, laws, religions, therefore the risk of mistake in the process of decoding the source is serious, as emphasized by Marc Bloch. The functionalist approach in translation, presented by German scholars Christiane Nord and Hans J. Vermeer and the theory of equivalence by Eugene Nida, prove helpful in the historical analysis of Spanish 16th-century military treatise Discurso sobre la forma de reducir la disciplina militar a mejor y antiguo estado. Using the military charges and early modern military law as examples, we can see how translation studies can improve the fidelity of historical analysis of sources.

Abstract:
The problem of translation and loss is a cardinal concern in translation studies. Conventional wisdom tells us that translation must necessarily entail loss. However, some translation studies scholars have argued that translation can yield significant originality in the target text. Christiane Nord, for one, argues that literary translators can claim authorial presence by actually causing the source text to “grow” in a way that is quantitative and qualitative. Although Nord’s idea applies mainly to literary translation, it raises questions about how this could apply to translations of other types of creative source texts, such as audio/visual translation. The format of interlingual subtitling between two disparate languages, such as English and Japanese, burdens translation with severe constraints and considerable loss text is taken for granted. But what is lost? Meaning? Nuance? This paper argues that these need not be lost in subtitling. In fact, by applying Nord’s model of source text growth to subtitling, we can see how subtitling produces new value to the source text. Through a close analysis of the Japanese subtitles of the 2007 film, There Will Be Blood, this paper will demonstrate that despite the severe constraints placed on the translation found in film subtitling, subtitles can promote “qualitative growth” by transferring the poetic function of the source text into new configurations in the target text, prompting target text viewers to interpret content in new ways.

Abstract:
The issue of translator training has become one of FIT’s principal concerns, as it touches fundamental aspects of the future of the field of translation generally, and of LSP translation in particular. Quality assurance in connection with translation studies is not something that is built up over night. I have long been concerned with the problem of how to integrate into the students’ workload texts which not just reflect but rather challenge the different kinds of requirements demanded by their future employers. The POSI project — PraxisOrientierte Studieninhalte für die Ausbildung von Übersetzern und Dolmetschern – is approaching the same problem from a different angle, namely by focusing on the market’s need for qualified translators, and defining qualified as including not just the actual translating abilities, but indeed abilities to manage the entire translation process with all its extra-textual aspects. Theoretically I lean on Christiane Nord and the functionalist model of translation in my didactic approach to translator training. The article is two sided: a)it is a report on a three-year research project involving the introduction of real external translation assignments into the curriculum of LSP translation studies, and b) it is a didactic reflection on this kind of practical orientation, on what we are able to achieve, how and why it is so vital to enlarge the scope of teaching translation in this direction.

Abstract:
In this study, we wish to examine official translation (termed sworn translation in Spain) from the point of view of the function and the communicative intent of documents which are the subject of this type of translation. The theoretical basis for an unusual approach to official translation is discussed;its aim is to render communication more effective. The theoretical foundations of this study lie in the functional theory of translation as formulated by Christiane Nord as well as a number of concepts from pragmatics deemed compatible with the above model. Judicial and administrative practices are also drawn upon in the discussion. Considering the process of official translation as a sequence of speech acts, as outlined by Alesandro Ferrara, this study describes the various functions within the sequence which are performed by the examples of documents examined (a British birth certificate, a U.S. birth certificate and an academic transcript from the U.S.). In applying the above approach the components of the document are analysed in relation to the addressee. Official translation fulfils a function and adapts itself to a number of conditions all different from those of the original text. The end result is that a considerable part of the information contained in the original document goes unnoticed in the translated document and even makes its understanding difficult, but the application of a strategy of omission of those elements runs counter to the perspective of the addressee (and quite often also that of the customer) and may affect its acceptability and validity.

Abstract:
More and more overseas tourists are coming to China for a visit after the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and websites with relevant information will undoubtedly become their first channel to know about the desired places in China. However, they are always confused about the English translation of the scenic spots. Based on the Skopostheorie and from the perspective of purpose of translation, this paper attempts to make a detailed analysis of translation errors in the English versions on the websites of some tourist attractions in China, in comparison to their parallel texts on the websites of similar scenic spots in other parts of the world. With the help of ‘non-equivalence at culture level’ proposed by Christiane Nord, causes for errors have been found. In the light of the Skopostheorie, translation brief of websites for tourism has been defined, and errors have been classified into three categories: ‘pragmatic translation errors’, ‘cultural translation errors’, and ‘linguistic translation errors’. A number of error samples of each type have been listed and suggested versions have been given. Parallel texts have been provided as a comparison and good examples to learn from. Through this study, we may conclude that non-equivalence at culture level and word level pose great difficulty in translation, and errors will be committed if the translator is unaware of the skopos or purpose of the translation. However, these errors can be avoided if more effective and flexible strategies are adopted by the translator, such as ‘translation by cultural substitution’, ‘omission’, and ‘translation by a more general word’. This study may serve as a reference for further study on a larger and wider range of errors, and as a reference for future tourism-websites translators.

Abstract:
Abstract The theme of the article is a research into the issue of translation of children’s speech. The analysis will be conducted based on three excerpts from a novel – Portofino – written by a contemporary American writer Frank Schaeffer and translated into Polish by the author of the article, early in her career as a translator. First, the results of text typology investigation by Anna Trosborg (1997b), Paul Kussmaul (1995, 1997) and Christiane Nord (2018) regarding cognitive structuring, text structures, and general style conventions will be highlighted. Then the outcomes of the translation process research (TPR) on cohesive aspects and structuring by Michael Carl, Srinivas Bangalore & Moritz Schaeffer (2016) will be summarised. This will be followed by the discussion of findings of Paul Thompson & Alison Sealey (2007), Gillian Lathey (2011), and Anna Čermáková (2018) regarding the issue of repetition and the aspects of point of view. Subsequently, the notion of style in a work of fiction will be introduced and followed by the description of stylistic and linguistic means used to achieve it. This will include the discussion of speech and thought presentation (STP) scales proposed first by Geoffrey Leech & Mick Short (2007) and then developed by Mick Short in cooperation with Elena Semino (2004). Next, the stylistic features of children’s speech and its linguistic exponents will be outlined. The translation analysis will focus on stylistic and linguistic devices used by the author to imitate children’s speech in the source text and their rendering by the translator in the target text. The achieved effect and translation equivalence will be evaluated, possible reasons behind any loss in meaning will become identified and some final recommendations for translators will get defined.

Abstract:
Titles of texts within the framework of humanities including linguistics and translation studies are observed and described by looking at their obvious features: namely, their syntactic structure, morphological forms and vocabulary. This article seeks to discuss theoretical foundations of a paratextual element called title and preconditions of its analysis within translation studies. For this reason, a most important precondition for a translational analysis of titles is the linguistic description of titles because without a clear comprehension how titles are linguistically constructed, what intralinguistic and extralinguistic functions they might fulfil, all endeavors to understand techniques of title translation will fail. Groundbreaking papers by Gérard Genette and Kathryn Batchelor on paratexts, Christiane Nord, Harald Weinrich and Regina Bouchehri on title description and translation, will allow to set a reliable theoretical foundation to research into titles. As the headline of this article claims, linguistic and translational title description will be conducted in the form of an in-depth research into titles of the Grimms’ Fairy Tales (GFT) and their translation from German into English by considering all the 201 canonized titles of the GFT, which in a pre-step of the intended investigation are compiled in a bilingual data base and systematically prepared for being described by linguistic and translational categories. paratext, title, functions of titles, linguistics of titles, Grimms’ Fairy Tales (GFT)

Abstract:

Abstract:
The translation of the New Testament by Berger / Nord (62003) “Das Neue Testament undfrühchristliche Schriften” [The New Testament and early Christian writings] belongs to a large traditionwhich pretends to vivify the biblical texts. From a traductological point of view it is very interesting toread the introduction to all the writings of the New Testament and the early Christian texts becauseBerger / Nord explain their reasons why they have changed the order of the texts and how they havetranslated the writings following their funcionalist method of “Making Otherness Accessible”. With 10thesis and antithesis they develope this method of translating on the base of this functionalist approachwhich we will discuss from the perspective of the communicative equivalence.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe consular dated memorial of a military accountant (scrinarius) of a.d. 404 with a chi-rho monogram from Bavai (France, Nord), previously thought to be a forgery, is reconsidered. Geographically close to Britain and well-dated, it is relevant to the origins of post-Roman insular epigraphy and to the possibility of recognising specifically Christian tombstones in Roman Britain. The insular series derives from a late antique tradition introduced to Britain via the Christian Church at an uncertain date. There is little sign of continuity with claimed Romano-British Christian tombstones, but an early phase of the insular series can be recognised. Literacy and perhaps the ‘epigraphic habit’ survived in other media.

Station Nord in Kronprins Christian Land has been the gateway to North Greenland for most geologists since the 1950s, yet little is actually known about the geology of Prinsesse Ingeborg Halvø, the low, barren stretch of land which surrounds the station. A major objective of the Ingeborg Expedition in July and August 1988 was to fill this gap by folIowing up work initiated during the GGU expedition in 1980 (Håkansson et al., 1981).

Abstract:
The Limestone Massif of northwest Syria has the largest concentration of late antique churches in the world. All date from between the second half of the 4th century and the first decade of the 7th century and are remarkably consistent in their conformity to a recognizably ‘Syrian’ architectural style. Almost without exception they are apsed basilicas varying only in terms of size and the quality of decoration. This region was extensively surveyed in the 1950s by Georges Tchalenko, whose monumental three-volume study Villages antiques de la Syrie du nord remains the definitive work on the area. Of the many ecclesiastical buildings included in this survey Tchalenko identified a group of approximately 45 churches possessing a bema. The bema is a horseshoe-shaped structure in the nave that mirrors the curve of the apse. Entered via steps at the east end, it provided benches for the clergy and a pulpit at the west end that was used for scriptural expositions and homilies.

Abstract:
On 13 May 2001, Italy Elected To Power A Centre-Right Coalition headed by the media magnate Silvio Berlusconi. Forza Italia, the political party founded by Berlusconi in 1994 when he first decided to enter politics, became the most widely supported political force in the country with almost 30 per cent of the popular vote. Forza Italia's success was partly a result of its ability to ‘cannibalize’ the votes of two of its smaller coalition partners, the Biancofiore, an electoral coalition between the Christian Democratic Centre (CCD) and the United Christian Democrats (CDU), and the Northern League (Lega Nord), both of whom saw their share of the vote fall sharply. The other party in Berlusconi's ‘House of Freedoms’ coalition, the National Alliance (AN), the formerly neo-fascist party that now sees itself as a pillar of the democratic right, held steady in electoral terms but remains very much a junior partner in the coalition.

Abstract:
<p>This article aims to analyse canon 5 of the Synod of Elvira (beginning of the 4th century) taking into account the norms of Roman law concerning the legal protection of slaves. This canon provided for the punishment of repentance and a prohibition of giving Eucharistic Communion to a woman who, in anger caused by jealousy, caused the death of her slave as a result of whipping. It was probably adopted based on a certain, particularly shocking matter, perhaps related to the intimate life between the master and her slave. The content of the canon suggests that the person responsible for its editing was familiar with Roman law, including probably in particular Emperor Hadrian’s rescripts – especially those addressed to the Governor of Baetica, where Elvira was located. The canon provided slaves with a wider scope of protection than the norms of Roman law did, both those in force at the time of its release and later introduced by Emperor Constantine the Great. It was also an expression of the generally discernible attitude of Christian communities towards the institutions of slavery. On the one hand, the existence of slavery was accepted and, on the other hand, there were efforts to improve the situation of slaves, especially if they were Christians.</p>

Abstract:
THE MOST SURPRISING BENEFICIARY OF A SERIES OF upsets in European elections which have shaken established political forces is probably the Lega Nord (Northern League) which wants to make the north of Italy effectively self-governing within a radically decentralized Italian state. In the Italian general election of 5 – 6 April 1992, its national vote rose from 0.5 to 8.7 per cent making it Italy's fourth largest party, while in the north it lies second behind the ruling Christian Democrats. The 3,394,917 votes which it has amassed represents a serious challenge to over a century of centralized rule in which before, during, and after the fascist period, consistent efforts were made to create a single nation, with uniform traditions and laws, out of diverse regions of the Italian peninsula. The League message is one which appeals to a range of social groups who feel that their interests are no longer served by a blocked political system unable to correct serious abuses in Italian public life. Despite warnings of chaos and instability if the Christian Dcmocrats and smaller governing parties were not given enough seats to form a new coalition, exasperated voters were prepared to reject existing arrangements.
