Abstract:
This chapter explores the ways in which the intersection between hip hop and Christianity brings about a recasting of what is assumed to be the norm within Christianity. It provides examples of how contemporary hip hop and Christianity in Kenya interact through a focus on youth, both in their historical roots and in current practices. Although music and Christianity have been regarded as incarnational processes that narrate themselves in lived experiences that document social reality, the chapter argues that hip hop provides Christianity a contested arena for self-expression and indigenization because of its emergence from a socioeconomic context of depressed economies and livelihoods neoliberalism fuels, as well as through multidirectional processes, multiracial identities, and multicultural interactions.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the basis for the “disconnect” between the church and the street and how Juliani's work brings them together. Juliani, this chapter argues, provides an important bridge for the church and the street, using music that focuses on social issues to bring people who care about them in for a closer look at his Christian message embedded in his songs. And, in looking beyond the musician to the context within which he performs, this chapter also considers the ways that Christianity in Kenya found its feet in different cultural communities, as well as how the culture of the missionaries who pioneered Christianity in Kenya interacted with the local cultures of the communities they converted, and how these influences have endured or changed over time.

Abstract:
Adopting a grassroots approach, this chapter argues that in its response to, and appropriation of, missionary teachings, the early Anglican Church in Kenya was heavily indebted to indigenous models and experiences for its impetus, dynamism, and direction. The author’s findings are compared with related studies elsewhere in Africa, especially in Uganda, to ask why the Anglican Church in Kenya was different, and to point to what was distinctly its own. The study focuses on central Kenya because it is inhabited by a relatively homogeneous people. It discusses three elements of central Kenya’s culture that shaped its response to Christianity: its pragmatic nature, its conflict resolution mechanism, and its desire to master and exercise power. The period of study starts with the arrival of the first missionary in 1900 and ends in 1932 with the young Church having overcome its first major crisis.

Abstract:
This chapter summarizes in brief an ethnography which demonstrates a close collaboration between the subject and researcher; the role one hip hop artist plays in a counterdiscourse to Christianity's conservative posture in Kenya; a methodological approach that blurs any assumed distance between object and subject; and the intersections, overlaps, and collaborations that have taken place in the life and work of Julius Owino—more famously known as Juliani—as an artist and the author's own as the ethnographer. This chapter provides the groundwork for later discussion by briefly examining the life and career of Juliani as well as his own relationship with the author, and by providing overviews of the major themes underpinning this volume as a whole—hip hop, youth culture, and Christianity.
