Flint, Andrew Richard. "Jimmy Carter and the rise of the New Christian Right." Thesis, Swansea University, 2007. https://cronfa.swan.ac.uk/Record/cronfa42340.

Abstract:
This thesis will extend the current re-evaluation of the presidency of Jimmy Carter through a detailed examination of the enduring impact of his Southern Baptist Christian faith upon the modern American political discourse. It will show that the relationship between Jimmy Carter's deeply felt religiosity and his political vision is primary to an understanding of the lasting legacy of his presidency. Carter dramatically reconfigured the relationship between religious faith and the presidency. The first president to articulate forthrightly a highly intimate and deeply felt personal religious faith to the American electorate, Carter placed spiritual concerns at the centre of the American political debate. I will investigate Carter's relationship with the forces of conservative Christendom with regards to a number of interwoven policy issues deemed by the evangelical community to be emblematic of the increasingly liberal, secular humanist nature of the American public and political discourse. Specifically, I will explore the issues of abortion, the role of religion in private schools, the place of prayer in public schools, gay and lesbian rights, Christian family values and the Congressional ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. I will discuss how the policies of the Carter White House on these so-called 'hot button' issues for religious conservatives acted as a catalyst for Christian political activism during the 1970s, laying the basis for their key role in American political life thereafter. I will explain how, paradoxically, the most overtly evangelical president in American history not only failed to retain the support of the conservative Christian community but was integral in the emergence of the New Religious, or New Christian Right, as a key Republican Party constituency. Jimmy Carter successfully reawakened faith-based politics but because his faith did not exactly mirror the religious and political agenda of the disparate groups that make up the religious conservative movement within the United States, that newly awakened force within American politics ultimately used its power to replace him with Ronald Reagan, a president who more carefully articulated their agenda.

Niggemann, Andrew John. "Martin Luther's Hebrew in mid-career : the Minor Prophets translation." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2018. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/277415.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation provides a comprehensive account of Martin Luther’s Hebrew translation in his academic mid-career. Apart from the Psalms, no book of the Hebrew Bible has yet been examined in any comprehensive manner in terms of Luther’s Hebrew translation. Moreover, research to date has predominantly focused on either ascertaining Luther’s personal Hebrew skills, or on identifying his sources for Hebrew knowledge. This dissertation furthers the scholarly understanding of Luther’s Hebrew by examining his Minor Prophets translation, one of the final pieces of his first complete translation of the Hebrew Bible. As part of the analysis, it investigates the relationship between philology and theology in his Hebrew translation, focusing specifically on one of the themes that dominated his interpretation of the Prophets: his concept of Anfechtung. Chapter 1 establishes the context of Luther’s academic mid-career Hebrew, providing a brief sketch of the history of his Minor Prophets translation, followed by an overview of the Hebrew resources in and around Wittenberg which he had to draw upon. Chapter 2 examines the role of the obscurity of the Hebrew text in his translation, and how this obscurity led to various types of contradictions and vacillations in his interpretations. Chapter 3 investigates the role that Luther’s sense of the semantic intensity of the Hebrew language played in his translation. Chapter 4 examines Luther’s use of “inner-biblical interpretation” – i.e. biblical quotations and references – to support, and moreover, to build his translations of the Hebrew texts. Finally, Chapter 5 examines the influence of Hebrew on Luther’s exploitation of the mystical tradition in his translation of the Minor Prophets. This dissertation, in short, shows that by mid-career, the impact of Hebrew on Luther’s Bible translation was immense and very diverse, more so than has been appreciated. It expands the frame of reference with which scholars can understand Luther’s Hebrew. It provides detailed analyses of many examples of his Hebrew translation which have never before been discussed or examined in any depth, and it provides hundreds of examples of his methodological handling of Hebrew translation issues. And it includes one of the most exhaustive analyses to date of three key philological challenges that confronted him in translating the Bible: Hebrew figures of speech, the Hebrew trope of repetition, and Hebrew transliteration. This dissertation also includes as an Appendix a substantial body of refined data from Luther’s Hebrew translation, which further illuminates the examples in this study, and facilitates additional analysis for future research.

Richard, Robert. "An examination of the life and career of Rev William McGill (1732-1807) : controversial Ayr theologian." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2010. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/1432/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the late 1780s there arose a theological controversy in Ayrshire, centred around the Rev William McGill (1732-1807), the associate minister to William Dalrymple (1723-1814) of the Old Kirk in Ayr. McGill was principally accused of holding ‘Socinian’ views, particularly in his Practical Essay on the Death of Jesus Christ (1786) which were at odds with the accepted standards of his church, a church which still retained a mainly Calvinistic outlook in the period. The Aim of this thesis Within this thesis I will attempt to place McGill firmly within the context of his day. This will be done by offering a picture of the Scottish, English and Irish ecclesiastical scene, with particular reference to Scotland, in which the Ayr minister was working. Further consideration will be given to the impact of the Enlightenment, as well as the American and French Revolutions, in the latter part of the century. The response of the various churches in Britain to these events are of particular importance for McGill’s career as, in his final published work On the fear of God (Ayr, 1795), the theological ‘radical’ emerges as a political conservative. What has perhaps been lacking in previous assessments of McGill is a study of the full range of influences which drove the Ayr minister’s theology. By utilising the evidence offered by the ‘Ayr Library Society’ (which held the works of noted English Socinians) of which McGill, along with Dalrymple, was a founder member in 1762, I will attempt to trace some of the main sources for McGill’s later thought. Of key significance is the holding of works by the Society of several leading English Socinians. Although speculative (as McGill does not directly cite these works), based on the evidence there does appear to be parallels between McGill’s work and that of the English theologians. I will also assess, in addition to considering why McGill’s work proved contentious, the reasons for his ‘apology’, following the case. Additionally it will be important to re-examine the overall effect of the case, in order to fully appreciate the significance of McGill for the wider Scottish churches of his day.

Moreton, April L. "Career Paths of Female Chief Academic Officers in the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2001. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc2788/.

Abstract:
This study examined the career paths of women administrators serving as chief academic officers in Christian colleges and universities which belong to the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU). The CCCU is a professional association of evangelical Christian institutions dedicated to integrating faith and learning. The exploration included each administrator's demographic information; her early, adolescent, college, and graduate school experiences; early vocational experiences; the effect of marriage and motherhood on her career; critical factors she identified as important in achieving her current position; and the importance of spiritual convictions or Christian faith in career decision making. Sixteen of the eighteen identified women holding the rank of chief academic officer agreed to participate in the study. The typical woman administrator was 50, married, and the mother of one or more children. She most likely had received her education in the humanities, with the terminal degree of choice being a Ph.D. She had served at her current institution for more than five years, but in her current administrative position for less than five. As an adolescent she excelled in the humanities, less so in math and science, and was involved in many extracurricular activities, including music endeavors, leadership, and her local church. She had received the most encouragement from her mother, although both parents expected her to do her best in school. For post secondary education, she had benefited from a mentor, had excelled easily, and had taken no time off between her bachelor's and master's degrees or between her master's or doctoral degrees. Although she had aspired to teach and received most of her early vocational experience in the professoriate, she had not aspired to be an administrator. As an adult, she had married in her 20's and had children before the age of 30. She had an unusually supportive spouse and believed her marriage to be a key factor in her career success. Her family and professional roles were potentially conflicted and required her to "juggle" her responsibilities. She believed the influence of her mentors, faith influences, and chairing an academic department were critical experiences that had led to her position in administration. Regarding her spiritual convictions and disciplines, she adamantly believed both affect her daily work and personal life. CCCU women administrators are deeply committed to their Christian higher education callings, highly educated, persistent, spiritually minded, and devoted to their families.

There are two categories: the Epistle as a literary genre and the rhetorical figure of speech that structures the whole hymn and that is called chiasm. The work consists in an attempt to analyze the Carmem Christi and its chiastic structure, seeking to show how Paul used this figure of speech in order to structure this hymn. Parallelism is the main characteristic of Hebrew poetry (and chiasm is a subtype of parallelism, that is, a parallelism inverted), although Paul has written the hymn in Greek language, he writes according to Jewish poetic model and not Greek, making use of chiasm as he structures Carmen Christi for the purpose of emphasis and memorization. Therefore, it is crucial to know this figure for the correct analysis of the hymn proposed.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the life of William Harold Fletcher (b. 1923) and his contributions to music education. The study is divided into a prologue, six chapters, and an epilogue: Early Life (1923-1941), College Studies and Military Service (1941-1948), Central Christian College: The Formative Years (1948-1960), Oklahoma Christian College: The Department of Music (1960-1980), The Department of Music (1980-2012), and Discussion and Conclusion. Fletcher, the first faculty member at Central Christian College (1950), dedicated his career to creating a strong music program for the college (now named Oklahoma Christian University). For the first thirteen years of its existence, Fletcher was the music department's sole full-time faculty member. He conducted, taught, and produced musical productions that were well received by the community. His contributions to music education include teacher, composer, conductor, and philosopher. Though not maintaining a highly politicized career, Fletcher's contribution to the field of music education remains substantial. His teaching methods and passion for music have inspired students for more than sixty years. Fletcher has received multiple honors for his teaching including the dedication of the Oklahoma Christian University music department as "The Harold and Mary Helon Fletcher Center for Music." This dissertation presents a glimpse of William Harold Fletcher the teacher, musician, composer, and free-spirited individual.

Alvar, Beltrán Carmen. "Arqueología del objeto encontrado." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de València, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10251/86150.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of the present work, "Archaeology of the found object", is to study and analyze what we know as "objet trouvé". In our way through Art History we will take a pause to see what avant-gardes from the twentieth century and which artists have recovered disused objects and have given them a second life by turning them into works of art. We will analyze their precedents to see how they could have influenced later artistic processes. This journey will inevitably lead us to the beginning of the small museums, and to think about what collectionism means. We will emphasize in the change of value of objects as they become works of art. Across examples of exhibitions of the last recent years and of museums devoted of hosting this type of collections, we will see how found objects are still being used currently for the elaboration of artistic discourses and works. All this will be done from a poetically archaeological look at findings that will conclude in a plastic proposal. An interdisciplinary research Through an almost detective process of that Umberto Eco called "abductive semiosis", our research will seek to elaborate a story, in order to include as an hypothesis the origin and the supposed purpose of an object or a fragment of a found object ¿as it happens in the logical mental process followed by Sherlock Holmes¿ we will see the reasons that have guided my decision to look for, not only the presence of three Ph. D. advisors, but fundamentally their different disciplinary approach, necessary to give coherence to the epistemological thread that sustains my own work. Being an interdisciplinary research I sought the help of three acquaintances specialists in the main topics that are developed in the dissertation. The archaeological and paleontological perspective that is in the basis of the process of looking for, finding, analyzing, and writing / creating from what has been found, that is present throughout the work, has taken as referent both the bibliography and the fieldwork of Professor in Paleontology Juan Luis Arsuaga. The rhetoric of painting as a way of understanding the discipline owes its intellectual position to the book Rhetoric of painting by Alberto Carrere and the director of this research, painter and painting Professor José Saborit. Finally, and to explain the object as a sign within Art History and the importance of the changes of value the contributions of the semiotician and Professor of Theory of Languages and Communication Jenaro Talens have been very important . The three disciplinary fields of my three advisors, articulated among them, have made possible the development of "Archaeology of the found object".
Fouto, Catarina I. B. C. "Edition and study of Teive's Epithalamium : the Epodon libri tres (1565) and Neo-Latin literature in Counter-Reformation Portugal." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2012. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:0b820530-7df0-4f36-9af6-b83add38c798.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation comprises the first study of the poetry of the Portuguese humanist Diogo de Teive (1513-14 – c. 1569). It examines and presents a scholarly edition of the Epithalamium which Teive composed on the occasion of the marriage of Princess Maria of Portugal to Alessandro Farnese in 1565. It also critically explores the work in which the poem was published, the Epodon libri tres (Lisbon, 1565). Because both this and the Epithalamium bring together different strands of Teive’s literary work, Chapter One analyses the development of his literary career, linking it to the ideological and cultural transformations which took place in Portugal from the 1540s to the 1560s, and the author’s attempt to carve his identity and space in the Portuguese literary scene. Chapter Two explores the concepts of ‘imitatio’ and ‘mimesis’ in the Epodon libri tres, shedding light on specific aspects of the Epithalamium. In the eyes of his readers, Teive emerges as a Catholic Horace. This is achieved by means of formal imitation, ‘aemulatio’, and allusion to Horace, a process whereby Teive introduces significant and ideologically motivated differences representative of the impact of Counter-Reformation upon literary writing. The ‘aemulatio’ of Prudentius’s Peristephanon in book II is to be understood in this light. Part Two engages with Teive’s comments on questions of verbal representation in the Epodon libri tres. Chapter Three analyses the Epithalamium from a generic perspective, arguing that it presents instances of generic enrichment, and that these are an example of the appropriation of occasional poetry for the purpose of authorial self-representation. One of the instances of generic enrichment is the incorporation of a didactic passage indebted to the tradition of the ‘speculum principum’, which is analysed in Chapter Four. Part One interprets the rewriting and appropriation of Plutarch and Erasmus as authorising strategies whereby Teive represents himself as an advisor of kings in the Epodon libri tres. Part Two discusses the author’s political thought and opinions, drawing from an analysis of the Epithalamium. Finally, Chapter Five comprises the study of the transmission of the poem, its metrical analysis, edition, translation, and commentary.

"A Battle for Righteousness: Jimmy Carter and Religious Nationalism." Doctoral diss., 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.17817.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: Time magazine called 1976 "the year of the evangelical" partly in response to the rapid political ascent of the previously little-known Georgia governor Jimmy Carter. A Sunday school teacher and deacon in his local church, Carter emphasized the important role of faith in his life in a way that no presidential candidate had done in recent memory. However, scholarly assessments of Carter's foreign policy have primarily focused on his management style or the bureaucratic politics in his administration. This study adds to the growing literature in American diplomatic history analyzing religion and foreign policy by focusing on how Carter's Christian beliefs and worldview shaped his policymaking and how his religious convictions affected his advisors. To better demonstrate this connection, this dissertation primarily discusses Carter's foreign policy vis-à-vis religious nationalist groups of the three Abrahamic faiths (Judaism, Christianity, Islam). By drawing on archival materials from the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library, Carter's own voluminous writings, and memoirs of other administration officials, this dissertation argues that Carter's religious values factored into policymaking decisions, although sometimes in a subtle fashion due to his strong Baptist doctrinal commitment to the separation of church and state. Moreover, Carter's initial success in using his religious beliefs in the Camp David negotiations raised expectations among administration officials and others when crises arose, such as the hostage taking in Iran and the electoral threat of the Christian Right. Despite his success at Camp David, invoking religious values can complicate situations already fraught with sacred symbolism. Ultimately, this dissertation points to the benefits and limits of foreign policy shaped by a president with strong public religious convictions as well as the advantages and pitfalls of scholars examining the impact of religion on presidential decision making.
Dissertation/Thesis
Ph.D. History 2013

For many young adults, career decision-making is a challenge that may lead to feelings of disequilibrium, stress, and anxiety. This disequilibrium may be especially problematic for young Christian women. On one hand, their belief system may provide a stabilizing anchor, and embue them with a sense of purpose (Fowler, 1981). On the other hand, distinct Christian values may further perpetuate traditional male-female roles and thus limit their labour force participation (Scott, 2002). To better understand this dichotomy and add to the limited research on this topic, my study explored the relationship between Christian faith and career development with a sample of four women (ages 33 to 51) already established in their careers. Research data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews. Each interview was preceded by the construction of a lifeline, or timeline of major events in the participant’s life (Campbell & Ungar, 2004). Themes emerging from case and cross analyses were (a) life story, (b) centrality of motherhood, and (c) spiritual grounding. These three themes were first reported for each participant as an individual case, and then in an overview of findings across cases. Implications for post-secondary career counsellors, based on this study’s results, as well as on relevant literature, focus on incorporating the notion of calling into three traditional career development activities: (a) self-discovery; (b) exploration and research; and (c) formulating a plan. Implications for career development researchers include: (a) creating a comprehensive theory reflecting spiritual and non-spiritual factors in women’s career development; (b) studying this topic with different methodologies; and (c) undertaking a best practices study of career programs integrating calling at secular or non-secular universities. These practical and theoretical implications may provide post-secondary career counsellors guidance on how to direct young women of diverse faith backgrounds to explore and pursue their fields of choice.
Thesis (Master, Education) -- Queen's University, 2008-05-27 13:40:29.543

95
The purpose of the study was to explore current situation and relationships among spirituality, work value and career decision-making among College Christian Student Fellowship. Variables in terms of genders, ages and frequency of participating religious activities were applied. The participants were students of College Christian Fellowship selected from 12 colleges in Taiwan. The measure instruments used in this study included Spirituality Assessment Scale, Work Value Inventory, and Career Decision Scale. The total valid samples were 248. Descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson Product-Moment Correlation and Stepwise Multiple Regression were used to analyze the data. Major results would be presented below. The spirituality of the participants tended to be positive, with the highest score on “purposes and meanings of life”. The participants valued work value, stressing on good interaction with boss and colleagues. When facing career uncertainty, they needed support from others and knowledge of various kinds of occupations. In addition, females, seniors and the ones participating religious activities tended to have higher spirituality. In other words, different genders, ages and frequency of participating religious activities led to different levels of spirituality. Females stressed on work value more than males; however, ages and frequency of participating religious activities made no differences. Freshmen and juniors suffered more from career uncertainty than seniors, and the ones participating religious activities irregularly or without frequent participation suffered more from the other. Participants with higher spirituality tended to stress more on work value and maintain the status of career certainty. Sense of unity of purposes and meanings of life, self development and the Universe presented a correlated anticipation on the status of career certainty. Purposes and meanings of life and inner resource presented a correlated anticipation on the status of career uncertainty. Finally, a discussion according to the results was given and suggestions were provided for further research.

Haarhoff, Marile Helene. "The perceptions of Christian performers regarding their career advancement in the entertainment industry." Diss., 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/41247.

Abstract:
This study unveils the perceptions, real-life experiences and thought-processes of contract workers who dedicate their lives to the Christian faith, values and belief-system, but simultaneously endeavour to establish and follow a successful career in the volatile, cut-throat, non-Christian-based (“hedonistic”) occupational entertainment commerce. The researcher embarked on this study with a qualitative, interpretivist research approach. Data was gathered through in-depth, unstructured, face-to-face interviews with a sample of nine research participants. The sample consists of student entertainers; entertainers in the public eye, but not yet established; as well as entertainers who have successful established careers with loyal national and international audiences in the Entertainment Industry. The researcher explores and seeks to understand the core values and belief systems of the research participants with regards to their Christian religious orientation, which is statistically verified to be the most prevalent religious practise in South Africa (Nation Master, 2013; Religious affiliation by country, 2010). Hence, the research findings with regards to Christians’ approach and attitude towards their careers will contribute to a better understanding and management of the majority of the workforce in South Africa. Moreover, the expected norms, values and work ethic of the Entertainment Industry in South Africa are exposed in this study. Although existing literature upholds that the Entertainment Industry is an exceptionally unstable work environment compared to other corporate industries, this research study adds significantly to current literature as viable causes for the unstable occupational environment are also investigated and presented. Previous research only addressed several aspects of the effect on one’s career advancement if an individual’s core value system differs from the accepted norms in an organisation or industry in general. This study subsequently reveals the personal- and occupational challenges that Christian entertainers encounter in an Entertainment Industry in South Africa and how they subsequently aim to decrease the cognitive dissonance that they experience due to continuous role conflict between moral obligation and the vital necessity for employment and career advancement. The findings of this study correlate with previous research as it indicates that the research participants will generally choose and prioritise their personal core values- and moral belief system above contradictory social and professional career demands and expectations.
Dissertation (MCom)--University of Pretoria, 2014.
gm2014
Human Resource Management
unrestricted

Abstract:
100
This research set career transition for the scene of the value conflict. We hope to explore the interaction between Chinese’s achievement view and Christian value by investigating Chinese Christian career transition process. We choose two opposite cases that can offer abundant information to be the research participants with purposive sampling, and analyze their career transition with narrative research methods, and base on interpretative phenomenology to deepen our understanding and applications of the narrative analysis. The research suggests that as for the practical aspect, the narrative research process must involve interpretation, and in terms of attention to sequence, language emphasis, and focus on the researcher in methodology, interpretative phenomenology should be the basis of narrative constructivism. This research observed that in the progress of career transition, Chinese Christian’s world view has those characteristics listed as follows: 1. As for the origin: On the foundation of Chinese achievement orientation, and by participating church activities, one may build up his fundamental Christian meaning system. Worldview is substantiated by the internalization of the combined Chinese Christian’ values and can be individualized based on one’s subjective experience. 2. As for the content: The form of world view is shown as the priority. Priority was given to Christian values, and can be declared through the concept of human and the concept of God which form the nature of ultimate concern and life goals. 3. In terms of meaning formation: We found that there is a connection between the narrative of goal obtainment/ determent and the sense of meaning. The actual representation of life meaning is through the symbolization of religious ideas and items. 4. As for the change of priority: We observed that the interaction between Chinese achievement view and Christian value presents common form from opposition to integration in the career transition procedure. According to such study result, the researcher also gets new perspective and re-realization by self-reflection, moreover, does take action in personal career choice.

Abstract:
104
This study aims to determine the impact and significance of Christianity on career decision-making. And to understand whether the power of faith can facilitate career decisions and planning. The research adopts qualitative method, narrative inquiry method and “holistic-content”analysis method. The researcher utilized semi-structured interviews with in-depth perspective to five participants who are Christian. Christian Youth’ career decision-making process consisted of three stages. First, participants who grew up in a Christian family develops its root in Christianity that gradually change from an indirect relationship to a direct relationship with their faith when they enter college. As they start to face crucial career decision, if one can receive God’s calling, this would support a clearer career direction. Follow by gaining information from other people’s advice, along with practical experiences that serves as additional contributing factor in career decision. In addition to accept the calling, one also tends to try their best to own their intended career specialty given by God, so as to honor God. Finally, at the career practice stage, as they follow God’s given path, it gives them the strength to breakthrough obstacles as they walk through life. One will also feel that they walk along with God under their mindset, ultimately, feeling the indivisible relationship with their religion. Christianity’s help in one’s career decision can be divided into three parts: A stable mood through devotional prayer to seek for God, as well as God’s inspiration through verses from the Holy Bible. Pastors’ advice will also be regarded as another support. In addition, ones decision to go on a certain career path rely on their belief and faithfulness in Christianity. Individuals tend to believe that God has a unique plan in their lives, and that God's guidance is certainly the most ideal one. This also makes them believe that God's love is permanent and unconditional. Based on the result of this study, this research expects to provide social workers, Christians and future researches with indications and suggestions on related topics.

Abstract:
102
This study aimed at understanding the process of searching for self-identity and career transition through Christian Faith. The purpose of this study included (a) understanding the narrator’s different stages of life (b) understanding the impacts of narrator’s search for self-identity on career transition(c) understanding the impacts of narrator’s Christian faith on self-identity and career transition. This study used self-narrative as its methodology and narrative interview as its approach, including text data for data analysis. A narrative analysis was conducted as using holistic picture as a whole and following the steps suggested by Crossley (2000) , while referencing to McAdams ‘s (1993) life story theory as well. The result of this study was written in six parts, in line with the narrator’s life story: (1) perplexity, loss, I was on my own (2) the bitter taste of loss (3) there finally came an explanation to them (4) finding a job that met my parents’ expectation (5) finding myself that was once lost and created by God (6) other aspects of the story. Therefore, the findings of this study are as follows:(a) before having Christian faith, family-of-origin, other people and societal culture are constructing elements of self-identity (b) after having Christian faith, God is in the center of life, and self-identity and career path are newly and re-constructed (c) Christian faith, pastoral counseling or counseling are closely related in forming self-identity and career transition (d)the development of Christian faith and self-identity is a lifelong learning At the end, based on the findings and discussion, related recommendation are provided for career decision-makers, parents, educators, counseling professionals, future researchers and Christians.

Abstract:
95
Abstract The interior design in Taiwan has burgeoned since early 1960s, when the booming economy of Taiwan expedited its growth and made it blossom. Up to now, interior decoration of private dwelling places and business space becomes a necessity and its importance is generally recognized. For those students graduating from interior design departments, what are the competences and capabilities they need but they are not yet fully equipped with when facing the fierce competition of a globalized and ever-changing world? Are their career lives in step with their initial expectation after they received a complete four-year professional training in interior design? Does there exist any discrepancy? This objective of this thesis is to explore the situation of those hundreds of graduates of the Interior Design Department at Chung Yuan Christian University, the first such department to be established in Taiwan, by means of the SPSS statistic analysis of the questionnaires coupled with face-to-face interviews of some of the graduates, as well as a review of related literature in order to elucidate the employment status of the graduate students, their career plans, and the application of what they learn to what they are working on etc. It also explores if there exits any discrepancy between what is taught in the classrooms and what is actually being applied in their professional lives in the hope of coming up with some constructive suggestions. The conclusion of this research is stated as below; 1. Although there is a discrepancy between the professional education they received in college and the competences they needed for practical interior design projects, this discrepancy exerts little effect on those interior design graduates in their career lives. 2. For those graduates who chose to quit the interior design industry, the main reasons are mostly attributed to long working hours, irregular working schedules, or lack of interest or personal devotion. The effect of the professional education they received in college is actually not quite significant. 3. Regarding the discrepancy between interior design courses offered at school and the competency actually needed in professional lives, most of the graduates believe that theories and designing concepts taught at school are sufficient, but there is indeed a large gap between those courses and the interior design projects they tackle on a daily basis. 4. No matter the graduates choose to stay in this industry or transfer to other industries, they all believe that it will benefit their career lives quite a lot by adding in on-the-job training during summer and winter vacations and taking some courses on practical design projects. 5. Among the most important factors that exert a far-reaching influence on the students in their future careers are the teachers’ characters, what they had said and done to the students, and their devotion to their teaching jobs. Key words: interior design, career determination, professional education, competency.

Jarvis, Brent. "Jazz music: the technological mediation of an aural tradition." Thesis, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/13418.

Full text
Abstract:
Jazz music is transmitted by aural and oral means. As recording and broadcast mediums became increasingly ubiquitous, starting in the mid twentieth-century, an ever greater proportion of jazz’s aural transmission would be mediated by these developing technologies. Many commentators address sound’s mediation from one state to another by identifying the resulting recording as an object. This object transcends temporal and spacial proximity, possessing inherent authority with implications for authorship, related work-concepts, and even issues of cultural assimilation. From a perspective informed by writings in musicology, philosophy, and sound studies, I examine recorded jazz music from the twentieth-century. I begin by positioning the history of jazz music in relation to the emergence of recording technologies to establish recordings as authoritative texts. I then translate (by transcription) primarily non-literate jazz recordings into the primarily literate discourse of musicology. In the course of examining music by James Moody, Eddie Jefferson, Bud Powell, Chick Corea, and others, I conclude that they all exemplify musical intertextuality. In some cases, technological mediation connects the texts. I then turn to an examination of recordings specifically. I begin by questioning musical notation as an adequate description of sound and move to developing a broader analytical framework. This thesis culminates with a comparison of Bud Powell’s 1949 recording of Bouncin’ With Bud and Chick Corea’s 1997 recording. Using the framework mentioned, disparate potentialities afforded by each recording’s mediation are connected to musical characteristics.
Graduate

Abstract:
Text in German
Formerly elderly people were taken care of at home by their families. Nowadays this difficult task is often assigned to professional nurses. In closer analysis of their task it becomes evident that helping the very old, ill and dying people constitutes a physical and mental strain. This necessitates the development a differentiated concept of human resource development that reflects the fundamental Biblical diaconal principles. This dissertation analyses the opportunities and potentials of such a concept. It researches and describes appropriate principles, amongst others the approach of H.U.M.O.R. and the model of Care for Caregivers (Pflege den Pflegenden). These concepts were developed in the "Luise-Schleppe-Haus und Schloss", a geriatric facilities in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, of long standing. The analysis combined with further literature opens up new perspectives for the human resource development in the care for the elderly and the ethical aspects of leaderhship in this context.
Systematic Theology and Theological Ethics
M. Therefore, investigation and theoretical studies have been developed concerning philosophers, designers, artists and authors, approaching the single artistic and communication derived object as a massification object. The relationship between Creativity and Technology allows that each one reinforces its qualities, and values the produced objects, developing an investigation that combines alternative transversal technology; integrating in the communication object different components. The interdisciplinary characteristics of Design and Graphic Production shared with other sectors allow promoting cultural, social, historical, political and scientifical values, integrated in the works of communication and artistic production. The study providing used methodology and integrated projects of different designers and artists, observed in their relations with the different processes, such as Drawing, Design and Graphic and Artistic Production, engaging comparative technological involvements with diverse processes of Experimentation, consent to extend the knowledge developed in the objects created in this context. New approaches in the serigraphic production processes (re)design, projecting exhibitions and communication, throughout studies carried on with design students, transforming canvas into production and project making, in close collaboration with designers and plastic artists, from which we select, in a first instant, seven projects, is what exemplifies the essential importance of the current investigation, which brings together Creativity and Technology, five of which were published completed. The association and involvement between the presented project with Scientifical Institutions, Non-Governmental Organizations, in Portugal and abroad, provide a dimension that justifies the ultimate objective in the opening of experimental spaces, as well as the creation of new interest areas, which in time will allocate the exportation of the Graphic Production, Design, Communication and Multiple Production Arts results
