Inglis (W. G. Inglis. 1983. Aust. J. Zool. 31: 243–255) divided Nematoda into three classes: the Enoplea, Rhabditea, and Chromadorea. Although most nematologists agree as to the limits of each of these groups, there is much disagreement as to how the groups relate to one another. Some authors group the Chromadorea with the Rhabditea, others group the Chromadorea with the Enoplea, and still others treat the three as independently derived taxa. In the present study I examine characters upon which various versions of the classification are based to identify plesiomorphic and derived character sta

Abstract:
Nucleotide sequences of the D3 expansion segment of the 28S rDNA gene were used to reconstruct evolutionary relationships within the Adenophorea. Neighbor-joining and parsimony analyses of representatives of most major taxa revealed a paraphyletic Adenophorea (p = 0.0005). Within Adenophorea, the Enoplia, Enoplida, and Enoplina were paraphyletic (p = 0.0024, 0.0014, and 0.0120, respectively). A major division was evident within the Enoplida, with one lineage consisting of a basal Thoracostomopsidae and Enoplidae, and a second lineage consisting of Oncholaimidae and Encheliididae. D.Phil. (Nematology)<br>The science of taxonomy or the organisation and labelling of organisms may strike many as dull and stuffy but everyone working in this fascinating field finds that it leads to some of the most searching and interesting questions. Taxonomists are confronted by a well organised world of nature, exactly that what prompted the great taxonomist Linnaeus to develop his clear, hierarchical method of classification. But at the same time they are faced with a bewildering diversity and variation within this organised whole. Seeking to order the stable units in the midst of this d
