Full textThis thesis in theoretical elementary particle physics and specially in quantum chromodynamics. During my thesis I have been working on the problem of quantifying nonperturbative corrections to various QCD observables assiociated with the hadronization phenomenon. The hadronization corrections come from the interface of perturbative and perturbative and nonperturbative QCD dynamics and their study sheds some light into the confinement mechanism. One of the existing approaches to describe these corrections relies on the analysis of ambiguities of perturbative series to the QCD observables the so called infrared renormalons. This approach has many interesting phemenological applications and it hes been tested experimentally against aavaible data on the measurements of deviations of perturbative QCD predictions to various observables at LEP, Tevatron and DESY. The infrared renormalon approach has a number of limitations. Firstly, it does not tell us much about the origin of nonperturbative scale and underlying QCD dynamics. .

Full textIn the framework of perturbative quantum chromodynamics I study the effect of parton energy loss in cold nuclear matteron the nuclear attenuation of quarkonium production in proton-nucleus (p-A) collisions. The first part of the study is devoted to the derivation of parton energy loss in various kinematical situations and for various processes. In particular, special attention is paid to the case of an energetic parton crossing a nuclear target and being scattered to small angle. In this case the radiative energy loss is shown to be proportional to the parton energy, which may have crucial consequences on phenomenology. Indeed, at high energy and not too low xF, J/psi production inp-A collisions can be described, at the partonic level, as the propagation of a color octet Sc \bar{c}S pair through the target, losing energy as a gluon. In a second part, I develop a phenomenological model to study the effect of such energy loss on J/psi nuclear suppression. The main ingredient of the model is to express the xF-differential J/psi cross section in p-A collisions simply as that in p-p,with a shift in xF accounting for the energy loss through the nucleus. The J/psi cross section in p-p collisions is taken from the experiment. The model is then generalized to implement the Cronin effect, by taking into account the shift in pT due to transverse momentum broadening in the nucleus. The comparison between the model and the experimental data for J/psinuclear suppression at various collision energies and for various nuclei appears to be very satisfactory

Full textIn this thesis we make analytical predictions for the inclusive transverse momentum (kt) distributions and 2-particle correlations in high energy hadronic jets at MLLA (Modified Leading Logarithmic Approximation) of QCD (Quantum Chromodynamics). First of all, we obtain the exact solution of the evolution equations at "small x" which we evaluate at thé so called "limiting spectrum". We then go beyond this approximation by performing the steepest descent evaluation which allows to generalize the preceeding results. Our predictions are in better agreement with the partonic dynamics and will be compared with the experimental data of present hadronic colliders. This will fur the test the hypothesis of Local Hadron Parton Duality, and the eventual need to incorporate NMLLA corrections

Full textThe main topic of this thesis is the computation ab initio of masses from lattice QCD.In the first part, the light hadron spectrum is computed. Thanks to a Lüscher-Weisz gauge action and a clover Wilson action describing with the quarks with six levels of stout-smearing, light hadron masses are extracted from simulations with $N_f=2+1$ flavors. These masses agree with experiment with a few percent accuracy and all the systematic errors are under control. In the second part, the light quark masses are determined. We use the same action as previously but with two levels of hex smearing. The simulations are done at the physical point mass and five lattice spacings are used to take a safe conitnuum limit, thus eliminating a higher source of systematice incertitude. Renormalization is perfo, rmed non perturbatively à la Rome-Southampton, thereby suppressing perturbative errors. We obtain in this work the first full non perturbative resultats at the physical point with a high accuracy since we obtain an error of about 5%

Full textThe future CERN collider (LHC) bas a fantastic potential of discovery, provided QCD can be quantitatively predicted. To do so, it is necessary to work at NLO approximation in order to reduce the dependence of the cross-section on the non-physical scales. To obtain results in this approximation, one has to calculate the cross-sections of the partonic subprocesses contributing to the studied reaction at the lowest order, and also the virtual corrections (loop corrections) and the real corrections. The calculation of the virtual corrections remains very complicated if the number of external particles is greater than four or if the external (internal) particles are massive. Ln this thesis, an automatic method which enables to calculate one loop diagrams with five external legs and which can be generalized to the case of massive particles is presented. Ln a first part, we describe different tools and methods necessary to such calculations. We then apply them to the calculation of the (gluon + gluon -> photon + photon + gluon) reaction, which interests the ATLAS and CMS experimentalists as the background for the Higgs boson search. We also give the explicit result for this amplitude for each helicity configuration in a compact form and a clearly gauge invariant representation. We finally present a phenomenological study of this reaction

Full textWe describe the ground state of non-perturbative QCD as a gluon condensate. In the framework of the Coulomb gauge hamiltonian, we introduce an effective interaction between infrared gluons by removing high-momentum gluons. The Bogoliubov transformation provides us with our variational space. The minimisation over this Fock subspace leads to a non-perturbative vacuum and its excitations. The minimum functional space for a boson dynamic is a distribution set. We find two kinds of condensation. The first one occurs only for zero-momentum states and looks like the Bose Condensation. In the second one, the quasiparticle spectrum shows a finite gap and the vacuum is a supraconducting state. We give constraints on the interaction so that the supraconducting phase is more bounded than the Bose one

Full textQuantum ChromoDynamics is the theory associated to the strong interaction in the standard model. It predicts that partons (quarks and gluons) are confined into hadrons at standard thermodynamic conditions. A state of deconfined hadronic matter, the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP), is predicted for a high energy density and would have existed in the early state of the Universe. ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) at CERN-LHC (Large Hadron Collider) is dedicated to hadronic matter study in p-p, p-Pb (Pb-p) and in Pb-Pb collisions where QGP formation is expected. In this thesis, we will present the study of photons coming directly from parton-parton hard scatterings, the prompt photons. Their production cross-section is calculable in perturbative Quantum ChromoDynamics theory. Such a measurement in p-Pb collisions enables the study of cold nuclear matter effects whose knowledge is crucial to distinguish key signatures of the QGP from nuclear effects in Pb-Pb collisions. Experimentally, the prompt photon can be discriminated using the isolation analysis method. In this thesis, the measurement of the isolated photon cross-section in p- Pb collisions at √ sNN= 5.02 TeV with the EMCal calorimeter of the ALICE experiment, is presented. The results are consistent, within the uncertainties, with theoretical calculations. The comparison with the measured cross-section in p-p analysis is performed via the determination of the nuclear modification factor RpΑ. The last one is compatible with the unity and does not clearly indicate modification of the prompt photon production due to nuclear effects in p-Pb collisions

Full textThe work presented in this thesis relies on the analysis of data collected between October 1999 and July 2002 by the BaBar experiment at the PEP-II collider located at SLAC (Stanford, California). Electron-positron collisions at a center of mass energy equal to the Upsilon (4S) resonance mass are used for the production of B meson pairs. In July 2001, the BaBar collaboration published the first measurement of CP violation in the neutral B mesons system. Since then, the precision of the measurement has been continually being improved with the increasing data sample. Two devices are dedicated to the reconstruction of charged particles : the Silicon Vertex Tracker and the Drift Chamber. The Silicon Vertex Tracker is crucial for the reconstruction of the B meson decay vertex. Its motion with regard to the Drift Chamber needs a rolling calibration of the corresponding alignment parameters roughly every two hours. The relation between the Drift Chamber geometry and the alignment has been studied. Beside CP violation, Heavy Flavour Physics is an other important issue of BaBar research program. Rare decays are of particular interest as they are sensible to a new physics beyond the Standard Model. The production of high energy eta' in B decays has been studied through the two main contributions, B -> eta' Xs coming from the rare decay b->sg*, and anti-Bʿ-> eta' Dʿ coming from the internal tree color-suppressed decay b->c anti-u d. The improvement of the measurement of the process B-> eta' Xs and the first observation of the decay anti-Bʿ-> eta' Dʿ have lead to the conclusion that the eta' production is dominated by the decay b-> sg* and enables to constrain its quark content

Full textThis thesis provides a lattice evaluation of the coupling constant of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) in Landau gauge, in "Momentum Substraction"- like renormalisation schemes (MOM), from a non-perturbative computation of the three-gluon vertex. This work was achieved with two flavours of Wil- son dynamical quarks. It takes place in a scientific program which already contains a similar analysis in the framework of the "pure gauge" theory. In bath cases, interpreting numerical data requires the introduction of a (A2̂)-condensate using the technics of the operator-product expansion (OPE). The contribution of this power correction is non-negligible till 10 GeV in the "pure gauge" case, but taking it into account gives a satisfactory agreement between the set of "quenched" as well as "unquenched" results with experimental data. Otherwise, this work also suggests a physical mechanism creating a (A2̂)- condensate in the framework of a model of instantons gaz or liquid. Moreover, this picture allows to interpret the behaviour of the strong coupling constant in the deep infra-red region in a consistent way

Full textWe present in this thesis the results obtained by the NA3 experiment at the CERN SPS, on high transverse momentum prompt photon production with π⁺, π⁻ and p beams on a carbon target at √s = 19,4 GeV. The main difficulty of this experiment comes from the high background from π° and η decays. We present the measurements of inclusive π°cross-sections between PT = 3,8 GeV/c and PT = 5,8 GeV/c for π⁺, π⁻, p, K⁺ and K⁻ incoming particles. The contamination to the prompt photon signal is estimated and subtracted through a Monte Carlo simulation. A clear prompt photon signal is seen. The observed cross-sections are in good agreement with QCD predictions computed at the second order. The difference between π⁻ and π⁺induced cross-sections which reveals the contribution of the annihilation graph qq →γg is found to be small and in good agreement with theoretical predictions

Full textNambu--Jona-Lasinio models can be used to study finite density and finite temperature quantum chromodynamics phases. Finite temperature and low density predictions of these models can be compared to lattice results. Such a comparison is not possible at larger density because of the so called sign problem. In this thesis the proposed systematic method allows to compute the stability of a prediction with respect to the inputs of the model. In this way a quantitative criterium is constructed which can be used to evaluate the predictive power of the studied model. Finally the high density phases which can exist in the interior of compact stellar objects are discussed along with color superconductivity in NJL type models
